Just when everyone was getting over the activities in celebration of the so-called “heart” month, an unprecedented throng of patients began filling

up the hospitals in Calamba City, particularly the government-operated Dr. J. P. Rizal Memorial Hospital, all with the same ailment — TYPHOID FEVER.

Reports from the Calamba City Health Office revealed that since February 1 up to March 22, a total of 1,061 patients were hospitalized and 1,585 patients were seen in the different barangays.

On March 10, Calamba City Mayor Joaquin M. Chipeco, Jr., DOH Secretary Francisco Duque, City Health Officer Dr. Esmeraldo Plastina, together with CHD Region IV Director Dr. Bayugo and Dr. Eric Tayag, admitted during a press conference that indeed there was an outbreak of typhoid in Calamba City.

The officials further revealed that after a thorough investigation was made, the culprit proved to be a contaminated source of water supply in certain barangays. The DOH representatives likewise found chlorine content in the water sources to be way below the standard requirement and that in some areas, water had coliform.

With such revelations, the city government adopted immediate measures to contain the situation by maintaining and monitoring of chlorination

module-Module 4 is an application of the current trends in technology for our clinical practice which aimed to increase efficiency in patient care.

The occasion was culminated by the PPS-STC’s 28th year Anniversary at Vivere Suites, Alabang. Call it a coincidence that the chapter’s anniversary was held in February 28 with 288 members in 2008.

Dr. Nancy Bermal once again lectured on invasive pneumococcal disease and its prevention.

The whole affair was enlightening and truly rewarding, considering that it was DLSUMC Pediatric department’s first endeavor to hold a postgraduate course outside the institution’s premises.

Editor’s NotesMy apologies for not coming up with the PPS-STC website as promised due to financial

and technical matters hence this newsletter came into print again. Squeezing the year long chapter’s activities in this 8 page issue is a great challenge for me. My heartfelt thanks to our sponsor for responding to my appeal in a brief period of time.

With the forthcoming change of PPS-STC officers and board members this April 2008,It is still my hope and wish to shift to a paperless information dissemination, that is

through the new PPS-STC website linked to the pps.org.ph. As such, I tried to abridge our chapter’s history on the last page with an intention to

recapitulate our achievements and what needs to be continued to uphold our Mission and Vision as we are now on our 28th year!

This issue of the PPSSTC newsletter contains almost everything that happened for the year 2007. It was another year filled with overwhelming challenges and as we altogether walked this journey for another

successful year in our society, we indeed did a very excellent job. These successes we shared with all the hardworking and well-driven officers and board members and the committed PPSSTC members. As we all fulfilled our respective duties as doctors, health professionals, teachers and health advocates, we too did not forget our role as parent/s or guardian/s or as any family member. So for this issue I would like to share with you this article I got from the internet with the hope inspiring you more!

JOB DESCRIPTION- MOM & DAD’S

POSITION :Mother, Mom, Mama, Mommy, Mamma, Ma Father, Dad, Daddy, Papa, Pop's

JOB DESCRIPTION:Long term, team players needed, for challenging permanent work in an, often chaotic environment. Candidates must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and be willing to work variable hours, which will include evenings and weekends and frequent 24 hour shifts on call. Some overnight travel required, including trips to primitive camping sites on rainy weekends and endless sports tournaments in far away cities. Travel expenses not reimbursed. Extensive courier duties also required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:The rest of your life. Must be willing to be hated, at least temporarily, until someone needs $5. Must be willing to bite tongue repeatedly. Also, must possess the physical stamina of a pack mule and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat in case, this time, the screams from the backyard are not some one just crying wolf. Must be willing to face stimulating technical challenges, such as small gadget repair, mysteriously sluggish toilets and stuck zippers. Must screen phone calls, maintain calendars and coordinate production of multiple homework projects . Must have ability to plan and organize social gatherings for clients of all ages and mental outlooks. Must be willing to be indispensable one minute, an

embarrassment the next. Must handle assembly and product safety testing of a half million cheap, plastic toys, and battery operated devices. Must always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end product. Responsibilities also include floor maintenance and janitorial work throughout the facility.

POSSIBILITY FOR ADVANCEMENT &PROMOTION:Virtually none. Your job is to remain in the same position for years, without complaining, constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that those in your charge can ultimately surpass you

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE :None required unfortunately. On-the-job training offered on a continually exhausting basis.

WAGES AND COMPENSATION :Get this! You pay them! Offering frequent raises and bonuses. A balloon payment is due when they turn 18 because of the assumption that college will help them become financially independent. When you die, you give them whatever is left. The oddest thing about this reverse-salary scheme is that you actually enjoy it and wish you could only do more.

BENEFITS :While no health or dental insurance, no pension, no tuition reimbursement, no paid holidays and no stock options are offered; this job supplies limitless opportunities for personal growth and free hugs for life if you play your cards right.

levels, surveillance and protection of water sources, and mass distribution of antibiotics, primarily in affected barangays.

With the aim of supplementing the local government’s thrust in promoting a massive educational campaign on typhoid, the Laguna Medical Society, Calamba City Medical Society, Philippine Pediatric Society-Southern Tagalog Chapter and Community Pediatric Society of the Philippines-Southern Tagalog Chapter quickly banded together to come up with the design of posters for display in the communities and production of an audio-visual informercial on the symptoms, causes, prevention and complication of typhoid fever.

Together with Drs. Julie Pua-Ferraz, Concepcion Heredia, Rodolfo Yu, Regente Lapak and Madeleine Sosa, we gathered materials to conceptualize a three-minute audio-visual presentation which was professionally produced in a cinema studio in Manila, courtesy of Mayor Chipeco. Copies of the DVDs were distributed to the different barangays and public schools in Calamba City.

Lectures on Typhoid Fever were given to midwives and Barangay Health Workers on March 14 by PPS-STC member Dr. Nancy Bermal.

On March 16, Dr. Fatima Jimenez also of PPS-STC delivered a talk on typhoid fever to LMS doctors during its 11th Postgraduate course at the Splash Mountain Resort.

The collective action of the medical groups resulted to the drafting of a program on Criteria and Admission, Discharge and Treatment Profile for Relapse and Reinfection in cooperation with the DOH and JPRMH.

The battle against typhoid is still ongoing; and our group has decided to pursue educational campaigns by continuously showing the video presentation in other barangays, communities and schools and through the Royal Cable facilities, with the assistance of Laguna Governor Teresita S. Lazaro.
