Листопад - місяць душ чистилищних. Коли душа

покидає цей світ в стані ласки, але має борги перед Божою Справедливістю і повинна очиститись у вогні

страждань від усіх наслідків гріха - вона потрапляє у Чистилище. По своїй суті, муки Чистилища нічим не

відрізняються від пекельних мук, окрім того, що в Чистилищі присутня Божа любов і впевненість у

досягненні вічного щастя у Небі, а в пеклі душі ненавидять Бога і знають, що їхні муки вічні

Найціннішою допомогою для душі в Чистилищі є

Служба Божа. Але треба не тільки замовити в церкві Службу Божу, але й взяти в ній участь, немов замість

душі померлого. Якщо Служба Божа жертвується за померлих, які вже сягнули спасіння, вони особливо

радіють, бо ця Служба Божа допоможе їхнім братам в Чистилищі. Велике значення мають Служби Божі,

вислухані в будні, а не лише в неділю і свята. Якби люди це розуміли, то церкви були б переповнені. Бо

коли ми помираємо, вислухані нами Служби Божі,

мають для нас більшу вартість від тих, які будуть жертвувати за нас наші рідні після нашої смерті. Також

кожне терпіння тілесне чи духовне, яке жертвуємо за душі в Чистилищі, приносить їм полегшення. Після

Служби Божої - молитва на вервиці є найефективніший засобом допомоги душам в

Чистилищі. Коли ми молимося за них на вервиці, передаємо їх в опіку Матері Божої, яка сказала святій

Бригітті: «Я Матір усіх душ Чистилища. Моє

заступництво пом’якшує їхні терпіння».

Чи має значення де ставити свічки за упокій і за здоров’я? Була свідком як одна жіночка в церкві пояснювала що біля цієї ікони можна ставити лише за здоров’я, а біля цієї лише за упокій.

Ні, немає різниці. У нашій церкві нема поділу "за здоров’я" - зліва, за “упокій” - справа. Головне з якою

метою ставите свічку і за це намірення треба молиться. Свічка – це якби провідник вашої молитви,

який підсилює і направляє цю молитву до Бога, Божої

Матері або кому-небудь із святих. І якщо немає любові і шани, то свічки не мають ніякого значення

Як позбутися нав’язливих думок у молитві. Що діяти? Чим більше намагаємось відганяти ці думки, тим більше вони наче «п’явки» чіпаються нашого мозку і вже молитва далека від духовного спілкування з Богом.

Один святий сказав: «Тільки молячись, навчимося молитись». Ці слова бездоганно вірні. Поки на сядеш

або клякнеш до молитву, доти твої думки, не стануть частиною молитви. Добра думка стане

частиною молитви, лиха – згорить у Полум’ї Божої

Любові! Це Бог дає дар і бажання молитви. Не ми творимо молитву, а Бог творить молитву в нас і Він

через молитву перемінює нас. Давай разом подумаємо: «Я стою перед Богом, який мене сильно

Любить і уважно слухає мої слова. Наше спілкування має бути подібним до пари закоханих, яких ніщо не

може збентежити чи відволікти увагу, адже вони повністю «зосереджені» одне на одному». Зосередься

на молитві наскільки це можливо. Нехай жодні

зовнішні чинники не впливають на молитву. З думками своїми не борися, бо думка є частиною тебе, адже

походить з мозку. Якщо думка є частиною тебе, а на молитві ми повністю віддаємо себе у руки Божі «Нехай

буде воля Твоя…», то думку, яка в даний момент з’явилась в голові, теж віддай Богові. Це подібно як в

дитинстві ми ловили метеликів. Кожний уважно слідкував за польотом комахи, і як тільки метелик

сідав на квітку, один рух – і він у наших руках. Молися

Богові свідомо! Якщо в цей момент думка «не Божа» з’являється, або якась спокуса, то відразу «схопи її»

своєю свідомістю та скажи: «Господи, в даний момент це, що маю віддаю Тобі в руки» (тут треба назвати

думку, яка зараз є в голові), і …далі продовжуй молитися! Навіть коли впродовж усієї молитви ти

мусив хапати думки і віддавати їх Богові, то це і буде твоєю молитвою на цей час. Здається мені і це

виглядає правдою, що Богові твоя «найважча»

Can you explain the difference between

“bowing down to” and “venerating” a statue or icon?

There really isn’t a difference, as long as you understand

that, when Catholics bow (or make some other act of affection such as kissing, touching, or embracing) they are not giving divine worship or adoration to an object, as if it were an idol. Instead, they are acknowledging the holy purpose for which the object is used, or honoring the saint that the object represents. The Bible clearly reveals that bowing down to something or someone need not be equated with divine worship, or the worship afforded to God alone. The key is in the intent for the posture. Lot "bowed himself with his face to the earth" before the angels that visited him in Sodom (Gen 19:1). Saul "bowed with his face to the

ground, and did obeisance" before Samuel (1 Sam 28:14). David bowed down before the temple of the Lord (cf. Psa 138:2). King Nebuchadnezzar "fell upon his face, and did homage" to Daniel, and even commanded that an offering and incense be offered up to him! (Dan 2:46). They all did this not because they intended to worship an object of God’s creation but because they simply wished to show their veneration and respect. That is all that Catholics intend to do. When a Catholic bows toward the altar in church he is not wor-shipping a table. Instead, he is showing reverence for

the place where the Sacrifice of the Liturgy is offered. Where the saints are concerned, there is noth-ing wrong with making some sign of our admiration of them. Scripture commands us to give respect and honor where it is due (cf. Sir 44:1-2; Rom 13:7; Phil 2:25,29; 1 Pet 2:17), and it is certainly due the saints, who have fought the good fight and persevered to the end. Of course, since the saints are no longer with us, our acts of affection must go towards those objects that make the saints present to us, with the understanding that these acts extend in a mystical way to the saints them-selves. Veneration is both a very biblical and a very nat-

ural inclination.

What is the “fall of the angels”? Is this in

Scripture anywhere? At the beginning of time the angels in heaven were giv-en a choice: follow God or rebel against Him. That a res-ident of heaven would ever rebel against God is one of the great mysteries of our faith. At any rate, some of them decided to rebel and they were thus cast out of heaven by St. Michael and the faithful angels. This is “the fall of the angels” and the prince of the fallen an-gels is Satan. The scriptural witness to this is very inter-

esting. In Gen 3, we see that there already existed a spirit of evil who tempted man into pride. Thus, there must have been some type of fall among the angels that caused one of them to be evil. Job 4:18 says, “Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error.” Traditionally, Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:12-19 are also seen as referring to the sin and re-sulting fall of the angels. Jesus himself says, “I saw Satan fall like light-ening from heaven” (Lk 10:18). Perhaps the most ex-

plicit reference is from the second letter of Peter, where it is written: 2 Pet 2:4,9 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of nether gloom to be kept until the judgment 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under pun-ishment until the day of judgment. We see from these verses that there was a fall among the angels. That their expulsion was lead by St. Michael is one of the most enduring Christian symbols. In Christian artwork, he is seen with a sword, trampling the devil underfoot. In Scripture he is always fighting

against evil (cf. Dan 10:13,21; 12:1; Jude 1:9). His role in the fall is most clearly seen in the Book of Revelation: Rev 12:7-9 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. That is why, as Catholics, we are fond of pray-

ing to St. Michael in moments of temptation or when we need protection from evil. Let us be more like the angels who announce the Lord’s coming and less like the angels who rebelled!

Sodality at Assumption Catholic School.

On Friday, October 31, 2014, thirty-six Sodalists from As-sumption Catholic School (ACS) in Perth Amboy, NJ participated in a special blessing of Icons. Following the weekly school Divine Liturgy, Father Ivan Turyk, Pastor of Assumption Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, gave a special blessing and dedication to each of the girls and the Icons they carried. Icons were given to the girls to foster devotions to Our Blessed Lady. Father concluded the service by advising the young ladies to prominently display their Icons in a location at home which will remind both them and their families to call upon Our Lady in times of need. The service was well attended by family, friends and the entire student body of ACS. Afterwards, the new and current Sodalists, along with their attending family members, Sister Yosaphata, Sister Thomas, Father Ivan Turyk and Mr. Michael Szpyhulsky, principal of ACS, enjoyed light refreshments in the church hall. Sodality is a sisterhood comprised of young ladies and women (grade 3 and beyond) who practice the ideals set forth by Our Blessed Virgin Mary. Sodality has been part of ACS’ history for over 50 years. In the past, Sodality was led by the Missionary Sisters of the Mother of God and lay faculty. Under the past guidance of parishion-er and teacher at ACS, Melanie Lawrence, Sodality members made cards for the sick, goody bags of appreciation, visited the elderly, and raised money for neighbors affected by tragedy. This year, Sodality is facilitated by Mrs. Halyna Lojko and Mrs. Patricia Bernstein both teachers at ACS. The girls meet monthly to pray as a community and plan service activities that will benefit both our immediate and extended communities. During the Easter Season, Sodalists will show their love for Our Lord by taking turns kneeling in adoration at the Tomb of Our Lord from Good Friday through Holy Saturday. Finally, our special devotions to Our Lady will culminate in May with our Moleben Devotions and a gift of flowers to the Blessed Mother.

Why to go to Church?

So why is it difficult to commit yourself to the community litur-

gical life? We believe that Jesus is real. We believe He is present in the

Eucharist. We believe that everyone who is baptized is a “temple of

God,” and that the Spirit of God lives in us (1 Corinthians 3:16). We be-

lieve that prayer is vital to our Christian lives. Why do some continually

miss Sunday Divine Liturgy? Here is one strong possibility: Jesus is not

first on our priority list of things to do.

Jesus told a parable that still remains

meaningful today about people who were invited

to a banquet but failed to show up (Luke 14:16-

24). One chose to check on his real estate hold-

ings instead. Another wanted to see the new oxen

he had bought. And a third was too absorbed in

his recent marriage. How sad! All three allowed

self-centered interests to diminish the greatness

of the invitation they had received. Jesus does not

want our leftovers, our token prayers, or just our spare time. He wants

us to accept his invitation and put Him first. Jesus wants to spend quali-

ty time with us every day.

Yes, the demands and responsibilities of this world are very

real, but that is why even more so - we cannot afford to put aside Jesus’

invitation. Just change your Sunday priorities and go to meet with Christ

at the Divine Liturgy. He is waiting for you. Allow His sanctifying graces

to guide and change you.

Instead of expecting to get some self-rewards from attending

liturgy, put yourself into it and make time to learn our Eastern Rite litur-

gical celebration. Discover its splendor. St. Basil says that our Divine

Liturgy is inexhaustible. Envoys, sent by St. Volodymyr from Kyiv to

Constantinople exclaimed: “We did not know whether we were on earth

or in heaven,” when speaking about the beauty of the Divine Liturgy.

Learn why for nearly 2000 years Christians in almost every generation

have been tortured and martyred for saying “without Sunday Eucharist

we cannot live!” Listen to the words of Mother Theresa of Calcutta:

“Celebrate each Mass as if it is your first Mass, your last Mass, and your

only Mass.”

Keep in mind: the Liturgy is the best place to thank God for all

the gifts we have received from Him - especially life, family, friends,

faith and love; the Eucharist gives us strength to face life's challenges

and to be mindful of God's love for us.

See how you might become involved in your own parish: maybe

you can sing in the choir, maybe bake Paska or Prosfora, join sister-

hoods or praying groups, help decorate the church for the holidays, the

list is endless...

As Bishop Losten wrote: “But when we learn to love the Divine

Liturgy, to hunger and thirst for the Eucharist, we find ourselves drawn

into this great Mystery of God’s Love for us more and more deeply.”
