Sat 12 | 6 pm | Prithvi HouseAuthor and scholar VRINDA NABAR will read from her recent book, Family Fables and Hidden Heresies: A Memoir of Mothers and More. Dr Nabar's reading will be followed by a moderated discussion.

Educated at the Universities of Bombay and Oxford, Dr Vrinda Nabar has published widely in gender studies and postcolonial themes. Her publications include Snake-skin and Other Poems of Indira Sant (a translation from the Marathi, Nirmala Sadanand Publishers, 1974), The Endless Female Hungers: A Study of Kamala Das (Sterling, 1994), Caste as Woman (Penguin, 1995). She has edited numerous scholarly volumes of essays while also writing for the newspapers and magazines and broadcasting on radio and television. Dr Nabar has been Chair of the Department of English Literature, University of Bombay, as well as Visiting Professor at Northwestern University, Evanston (USA) and the Open University, Milton Keynes (UK).

Convent children trying to modernize there gujju mom, realize later on they were better off with their traditional mother.

Three stories in Urdu by the famed and much loved, not to say controversial writer, Ismat Chughtai (1915-1999)

A dramatic exploration of hazrat khusraus poetry , life and philosophy through music, dance and drama.

Each piece is interjected with a scene in the bar. All the pieces originate here either from a customer, bartender or an incident sparking of the next story. The pieces are “Do Deewaney iss sheher mein”, “Lash-ting Impression”, “Daddu Tiwari” And “Ghar ghar”

Ek Madhav Baug tells the story of a 21 year-old youth coming to terms with his sexuality. The play is from the point of view of his mother who discovers that her son is gay.

This is a musical satire, at times hilariously funny and at times ridiculous, with shades of pathos. It makes use of television and advertising lingo as a theatrical device including the now popular trend of Hinglish

This play is based on DILLI KA YAADGAR MUSHAIRA. by FARHATULLAH BAIG. The Mushaira which forms the basis of this heart warming play was the last of its kind in the Mughal Court.

Tajmahal Ka Tender is a very interesting portrayal of the present political and bureaucratic setup in India.

Beauty of love is divine and sacred. It should be protected and not be polluted by negative forces inside us and around us.

A dramatic farce on today’s political scenario, the play attempts to stir one’s conscience to the stark realities of the politico-religious nexus

The play talks about human-pawns who revolt, as they have done all along, under complex circumstances.

Biwi-O-Biwi deals with the theme of modern male chauvinism and how the modern woman stands up to and fights against it.

Gaj Foot Inch deals with the deeper emotions of a shy, adolescent Tillu who has never encountered love in life.

Much hilarity and confusion prevails when a village production of `Ramleela` goes horribly wrong…

A Hilarious look at the generation gap within a family.

The tragic story of a family. A woman in a man’s world and the politics of patriarchy. The mirror of the world at large.

An old clown reminisces about his life after his “swan song” with the Bards as this alter ego. A tribute to genius – when does life end and art begin?

This is a comedy involving 3 friends, that questions today’s urge to purge all signs of our culture and all connections to our past.

Two young people in love, facing parental opposition, make two generations realize that nothing really changes where this wondrous emotion is concerned.

Winner of 4 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, including Best Play and Best Actor, The Interview has been hailed as "a tightly packed action comedy" with "brilliant contemporary writing".

Labelled both “hilarious” and “insightful” by the critics, A Guy Thing “veers cleverly between a laugh riot and an intelligent play” about two outrageously mismatched strangers who find themselves stranded in a hunting cabin during a ferocious storm. Also featuring 2 short pieces - #309 and My Soul, The Pavement by Michael Puzzo.

Eight citizens of Mumbai pour their heart out to the audience. A slice of their lives is served on a platter; pain, joy, memories, hopes, fear, desires, sorrow, ambitions, love…Two stories: First, a modern love story enacted on the 321st floor of a building and how a thoughtful official recalls adventures from his past as well as his awakening sensitivity to words and stories and second, is about the strange behavior and indeed disappearance of words that has being reported in these parts.

PHèdREby Patrice Chéreau (140')Patrice Chéreau unveils his Phaedra in the stark space of the Ateliers Berthier with its towering stone walls. His interpretation of Racine's tragedy of desire and death paints the portrait of a woman physically and spiritually torn appart by a forbidden love. Dominique Blanc is this woman lost, distraught, a living disgrace transcending all reason and morality, a flesh and blood incarnation of the enigma of female desire.

Vikalp@Prithvi[Last Mon]Documentaries and short film screenings

Mon 28 | 7 pm | Prithvi HouseVikalp@Prithvi presents two films in Jan: ‘In the Year of the Pig’ is a 1968 American documentary film about the origins of the Vietnam War, directed by Emile de Antonio. It was nominated for an Academy award for Best Documentary. The film, which is in black and white, contains much historical footage and many interviews. Produced during the Vietnam War, the film was greeted with hostility by many audiences, with bomb threats and vandalism directed at theaters that showed it. The provocatively titled documentary is as much a cool, intellectual work of cinematic art as it is a hot piece of agit-prop.Emile de Antonio is considered to be the most important political filmmaker in the United States during the Cold War. A short film by Oorvazi Irani, ‘Mamaiji’ (‘Grandmother’) is an exploration of a cinematic portrait of the director's grandmother who was born in Iran and now living in India. For details, visit www.tinyurl.com/VikalpJanuary
