The books were obtained through the Scholastic Literacy Initiative, which provides reading material for special reading programs like the TALGV Read to A Therapy Dog program. Every Wednesday the volunteers and their Therapy Dogs enter the third grade quad to work with the students. The third graders read directly to the Therapy Dogs, with the volunteers keeping a watchful, unobtrusive eye on both dogs and students. Having the dogs as attentive, non-judgmental listeners makes reading fun and less stressful for the students. The result is that reading skills increase and the students enjoy reading. Once the student has finished reading a book, they take that book home to enjoy again and again; perhaps reading to a parent or sibling or other family members. The hope, of course, is that they will carry on this love of reading far into their futures. As the doors swing wide at TALGV, you’ll find all the animals; but our Therapy Dogs are nowhere in sight! The certified Therapy Dogs spend every other Monday visiting care facilities in Green Valley: Prestige, La Posada, Casa de Esperanza and Santa Rita Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Successful Therapy Dogs need three things: love to share, an easygoing temperament, and an obedient nature.

The volunteers with their dogs split up to visit each room and the happiness begins. Each person tells about their pets and their stories fill the rooms. The owners’ and dogs’ demeanors are relaxed and this calms the residents. Many of the residents

at these facilities leave their dogs back home, while undergoing more therapy or recuperation. Your heart melts watching these furry, friendly, four paws with their human friends interacting with the residents. A lesson in unconditional love! You watch the miracle of people momentarily forgetting their daily struggles as they interact with their furry friends. The dogs have worked not just with the elderly, but with young children as well. Previously, they worked in the local library in the children’s section, being attentive and listening as the children read their chosen books. Now, they have taken it a step further, interacting with third grade students at local schools. Last year, in a school in Sahuarita and this year in Green Valley, at Continental School.

A pilot program was developed with the help of funds from The Animal League of Green Valley and United Way. The dogs were required to be certified therapy dogs, trained to work with students. The volunteers also received training in student management techniques and strategies for reading comprehension to help further student understanding and enjoyment of reading.

ROCKING AND ROLLING FOR

THE ANIMALS Good food, live music, dancing and a fabulous silent auction

all made for a wonderful evening at our 3rd Annual “Give Your Heart to the Animals” event on February 16, 2014.

Thanks to all our supporters who rocked and rolled the night away and

helped us raise $6,400 for the animals.

Mail from our friends...

Willie

Thanks to all of you for your personal

time donation and love of labor to help all the animals find a forever home. “Precious”, my black and white cat I adopted 5 years ago, continues to be lov ing and de f in i te ly independent! I still love her. God Bless all of you, Pat Halladay

Precious

Hoku/Pancho

Thank you for saving my life! My forever family and I are so grateful. My chemo and radiation treatments are finished, and I am feeling great. I have a girlfriend, Gingersnap, next door, and have been traveling with so many new experiences...flying, elevators, stairs, and the beach. I have a nice wardrobe and go everywhere with my dad and mom. Most importantly, I have people who love me unconditionally and I am forgetting my prior life and enjoying each and every day. Merry Christmas to you all, Hoku/Pancho

We love our new home!!

Merry Christmas from Nancy, Gary, Boots and Red

Patches

I am pleased to inform you that I am very happy with the Kosnicks. They are very quick learners. Every morning I lead Dick (I don’t call him Dick to his face) to my eating area and remind him it is breakfast time. We all sleep together. I was careful to watch where they sleep and I sleep in the middle, down near the foot of the bed (king-size, would you believe). Linda combs me every day; not my favorite thing, but, “Look, Ma, no mats”. They bought me the latest toys and I have a good time teaching them how to play. I still do not care to be alone and follow them from room to room. When they return home, I meet them at the door. If visitors stop by, I am usually right there to welcome them. Haven’t met a person I didn’t like yet!!! THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME GO TO THE KOSNICK HOUSE. MERRY CHRISTMAS, Patches Kosnick

Parker We just wanted to send you an update on Parker (formerly known as Checkers) who we adopted 2 years ago in March. He has grown into a handsome 70 pounds and has been an endless bundle of energy and joy in our lives - fitting in just perfectly with our lifestyle. His favorite hobbies include bike-jogging, long

walks, off leash hiking, and camping. Parker loves other dogs, kids (especially our 14 year old daughter) and respectfully watching birds and bunnies. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to add Parker to our family. He is such a joy! Paula, Beto & Genesis Bohte

We adopted “Sweetie” about 2 years ago and I have come to realize that she is not only the daughter I never had, but was probably difficult to adopt because of her little ‘quirks’. She kind of snorts like a pig, just a little grunt; it is so cute and a very big part of her character! Sometimes I now call her ‘Bonkers’ because when she wants attention she ‘bonks’ you with her nose. It’s so sweet! I know she more than likely had it ‘ruff’ (no pun intended); so it took a while to realize she is a part of our family forever! She also has Booger, our Boxer, and they do EVERYTHING together. I Thank you, Jean and TALGV! I truly believe in the “Who Saved Who” motto! All our love, Kevin Sold and Jhymae Nunley

Sweetie

Duke

To all my pals at The Animal League, here’s wishing you a Happy New Year, hopefully in your new home.

Love, Duke (formerly “Mickey”) and Roger & Nancy Bock

Just wanted to give you an update on our new family member, Willie. He is very playful and comes when you call him. He is one of the sweetest, most affectionate lap cats we’ve ever met. We love our black and white pets, and Willie has been a great addition! Cindy Liddicoat

Harvey & Katie

Casey, adopted January 31, 2008. She is still awesome!!

Thank You! Paul and Dale Nonemacher

Casey

Thanks, TALGV, for our forever home and special thanks from

Mom and Dad!

More mail from our friends...

It’s been just over three years since we adopted Smokey and Tiger from your shelter. What an absolute joy the two of them have been. They continue to want a lot of contact with us, something that I was looking for in a cat. They are definitely family, and they have all the love a pet could ask for. They spend hours on our large enclosed patio, secure from the dangers of being “outdoors”. Rest

assured that these two cats have a very good life. They are spoiled rotten. God bless you wonderful people for the work you do with

the animals. All the best. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cara

Smokey & Tiger

We adopted a cat named Bella in 2012. We gave her plenty of space because she would scratch and bite! She is now so good you would not know her. She is so close to us and loves us and talks all the time to thank us. We love her very much and are so happy to have her. God Bless all the animals with you and pray they too can find a loving home. Thank you! Love, Al and Kathy Reiner

Bella

Koda is a sweetheart and we are so lucky to have adopted him! He is so playful and loves playing tug of war with our other

dog, Cash. He is such an awesome dog and has been a fun addition to our family. Thank You! Ashley

Koda

Barnee

Thank you for finding me such a good home. I’m fat and happy, cozy and warm. My mom and dad are crazy about me. Sometimes they act a little crazy-in-love with me.

Barnee McDonald

Lima We have been so very blessed by Lima Lu. She evaluated her humans for a short time and soon became the watchful matriarch! She often leads the 4 other dogs, aged 7 months to 15 years, in yard races and rough and tumble play. We so enjoy her playfulness and tenderness toward us. We just LOVE her! Blessings to you all, The Kightlingers

It’s been four years since Bill and Pat adopted me from TALGV. Before that I spent almost a year with caring friends at TALGV and had eye surgery to fix my eyes. Last week the doctor gave my eyes an A plus! But Dr. Sophia said I could stand to lose 5 pounds, so now it’s mostly green beans for snacks. I just about have Bill and Pat trained. They take me for walks, give me my daily

meds and rubs. Most people are surprised to find out that I am blind since I get around so well. I hear TALGV has expanded a lot . We enclose a gift to help with the bills. Thank you for saving my life! Nisha

Nisha

As of December, 2013, I have had Gracie for one year. We get along great. Gracie and I took an RV trip to Florida. She was terrific the whole 4485 miles there and back. Have a Very Happy New Year, Larry and Gracie
