21 Sfi INFANTRY BfiTTtfUON SHORT HISTORY OF THE UNIT

In November 1973 a decis ion was made by the then Chief of the SADF, general M.A. de M . M alan, to establish a tra in ing centre

for black sold iers.

In January 1974, ten perm anent fo rce m em bers, under the com m and of m ajor M.W. P retorius, were sent to the then Bantu Train ing College at Baviaanspoort fo r an orientation phase.

During March 1974, sixteen vo lunteers were recruited and tra ined as security guards. During the second intake in A ugust 1974 an add itional th irty m em bers were em ployed and trained as instructors.

In April 1975, au thority was granted fo r black members to attest in the permanent force.

On 1 December 1976, the Bamd Train ing College became a se lf-accounting un it and m oved from Baviaanspoort to its present prem ises at Lenz. The un it was renamed 21 Battalion, as it was founded on the 21st b irthday of the South A frican In fantry Corps

t T 'h g 1976, the firs t m em bers of 1 Transkei Battalion and 1 Ovambo Battalion (the fo rm er 101 Batta lion at Ondangwa) were f ( p ie d at 21 Battalion.

During May 1977, general M .A. de M . Malan, authorised the tra in ing of the firs t operational com pany of black m em bers only.

As a result of the operational success achieved by th is com pany in the Caprivi, au thority was granted in 1978 fo r a second opera­tional com pany to be trained. S im u ltaneously the firs t mem bers of the Venda National Defence Force were tra ined by the unit.

During January 1979, the firs t b lack chapla in, reverend Booysen, was appointed at the unit.

During 1980, the A du lt Education Centre was founded at the unit. In 1982, Corporal Tsagae became the firs t b lack permanent force member to be awarded S pringbok co lours for boxing.

On 26 M ay 1983, the Unit was awarded the Freedom of Soweto. During 1984, the status of the Unit was changed to that oi a corps school fo r black permanent force members. Th is schoo l trained the firs t com pany of the Kwa'Ndebele Defence Force (115 Battalion).

{ R i n g Ju ly 1986, the tra in ing of an additional two operational com panies comm enced, and on 25 October 1986, the freedom of Johannesburg was awarded to the unit.

On 1 Ju ly 1987, the status of the Unit changed to that of an Infantry Battalion and supp lied one com pany to Northern Transva.il Command as a reaction force company. A further three com panies were recruited and tra ined the same year.

During 1988, four com panies were deployed at Sector 10 in South West Africa. Two of these com panies were also deployed in Angola.

1989 is regarded as an exceptional year fo r the Unit. The Urm celebrated its fifteenth b irthday by rece iving its Unit Colours. The firs t b lack Honourary C o lone l in the SADF, M r Justice Tshungu, was appointed H onourary Colonel of 21 Battalion during a parade on 15 March of that year.

The Unit was presented w ith its National C o lours at a presentation parade held at Heidelberg on 17 August 1990, by the Chief of the Army, Lieutenant General G. M eiring .

W ith effect of 1 January 1991, the Unit name was changed to 21 South African Infantry Battalion.
