MEAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKThe MEAC will select a player, rookie, defensive specialist and setter of the week throughout the season every Monday. The first weekly honors will commence on Monday, Aug. 28 and will conclude Monday, Nov. 13.

POSTSEASON AWARDSThe MEAC will name first and second All-MEAC teams, an All-Rookie team, Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year at the conclusion of regular-sea-son play. All award winners are selected by the MEAC’s head coaches and sports information directors. MEAC ANNOUNCES PLAYER OF THE WEEK Honors

2017 MEAC WEEKLY VOLLEYBALL HONORSNorth Carolina A&T State senior Samara Brown and Maryland Eastern Shore junior Rachel Kayongo were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced. Florida A&M’s Candelaria Herrera was named Rookie of the Week, while North Carolina A&T State senior Jasmine Lindor earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Maryland Eastern Shore junior Carolina Machado was named Setter of the Week.

Brown (6-1, Sr., OH, Raleigh, N.C.) hit .404 for the weekend in helping the Aggies pick up conference wins over Savannah State and South Carolina State, averaging 4.5 kills per set. She had 13 kills and a .385 hitting percentage, to go along with five digs, in a straight-set win over Savannah State – before hitting .423 and recording 14 kills in a sweep of South Car-olina State. Brown also had five total blocks in both matches.

Kayongo (6-0, Jr., OH, Northridge, Calif.) averaged 3.5 kills per set and hit .383 for the weekend as Mary-land Eastern Shore won a pair of matches to clinch the MEAC Northern Division regular-season title. She had 12 kills, 10 digs and a .524 hitting percentage in a straight-set win over Morgan State on Friday, before racking up nine kills and six digs, hitting .304 against Coppin State on Sunday.

Herrera (6-1, Fr., MB, San Juan, Argentina) hit .400 in Florida A&M’s four-set home win over Bethune-Cookman, recording 14 kills, three blocks – all solo – and five digs. She tied teammate Maria Yvette Garcia for the team lead in kills, averaging 3.5 kills per set in the victory.

Lindor (6-0, Sr., MH, Cornelius, N.C.) averaged 2.0 blocks per set this past weekend, recording 12 total blocks in road wins over South Carolina State and Sa-vannah State. She had six total blocks against Savan-nah State to go along with an ace and three kills, while her six total blocks against South Carolina State came along with a .429 hitting percentage and four kills.

Machado (5-7, Jr., S, Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded a pair of double-doubles for Maryland Eastern Shore over the weekend, helping them remain undefeated in conference play. She had 26 assists and 11 digs in a win over Morgan State, before racking up 25 assists and 14 digs against Coppin State. She now has three consecutive double-doubles, and for the weekend, Machado averaged 8.5 assists and 4.2 digs per set.




MEAC WEEKLY CONFERENCE NOTES

Bethune-Cookman fell to FIU this past week before dropping a four-set match at Florida A&M to fall into a tie atop the Southern Di-vision standings. The

Wildcats will close out the regular season on the road this weekend with matches at North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. Winning both matches would net Bethune-Cookman the Southern Division’s top seed in the MEAC Championships.

Coppin State defeat-ed Delaware State in four sets this past week before falling to Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Ea-

gles head into the final weekend of the regular season with an outside shot at the MEAC Championships. Coppin State will play a road non-conference match against Rider on Friday, before heading to rival Morgan State on Sunday.

Delaware State fell to both Coppin State and Morgan State this past weekend, and the Hornets would have to win both of

this weekend’s matches to be in the conversation for qualifying for the MEAC Championships. The Hornets will hit the road to face Hampton on Friday, before playing host to Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday in their regular-season finale.

Florida A&M, the Southern Division’s preseason favor-ite, defeated rival Bethune-Cookman in four sets on Sunday to force a tie atop the

division standings. Candelaria Her-rera was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for her efforts, and FAMU will close the regular season with matches at North Carolina Central (Friday) and North Carolina A&T State (Sunday) after a midweek match at Alabama State.

Hampton fell to rival Howard this past weekend, and the Lady Pirates head into the final weekend of the regular season third in the Northern

Division, tied with Morgan State. Hampton will be home to wrap up the regular season, taking on Delaware State on Friday and rival Norfolk State on Sunday. Two wins would secure the Northern Division’s No. 3 seed.

Howard defeated Norfolk State and Hampton on the road this past weekend, sitting in second place in the Northern Divi-sion standings at 9-2

and assured the division’s No. 2 seed in the MEAC Championships. The Bison will wrap up the regular season at home on Friday against Morgan State.

Maryland Eastern Shore claimed its first Northern Division title since 2012 this past weekend, defeating Morgan State and Coppin State. Rachel

Kayongo was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week and Caro-lina Machado earned Setter of the Week honors. The Hawks wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend, taking on Norfolk State on Friday and Delaware State on Sunday.

Morgan State is tied with Hampton at 5-5 in MEAC play after defeating Delaware State and falling to Maryland Eastern Shore this past

weekend. The Lady Bears wrap up the regular season against Howard and rival Coppin State this week-end, and they will likely need to win one of those two matches to qualify for the MEAC Championships.

Norfolk State fell to Howard this past weekend in straight sets, and the Spartans have been eliminated from qualifying for the

MEAC Championships. Norfolk State, at 0-10 in MEAC play, will close out the regular season this weekend, playing host to Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday before hit-ting the road to face rival Hampton on Sunday.

The Aggies picked up straight-set wins over Savannah State and South Carolina State this past weekend. Samara Brown was

named MEAC Co-Player of the Week, while Jasmine Lindor earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors. The Aggies will play host to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M this weekend to close out the regular season.

North Carolina Central clinched a spot in the MEAC Champion-ships for the second straight season with a four-set win over

South Carolina State this past week. The Eagles will close out the regular season at home this weekend, taking on Florida A&M on Friday and Bethune-Cookman on Sunday.

Savannah State fell to North Carolina A&T State this past weekend and will not qualify for the MEAC Championships. The

Lady Tigers will take on Geor-gia Southern on Monday before wrapping up the regular season on Sunday with a home match against South Carolina State.

South Carolina State has been eliminated from qualifying for the MEAC Championships after falling to North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T

State this past weekend. The Lady Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season this coming Sunday on the road, taking on Savannah State.
