As May 12th – 18th marks National Volunteering week the ISPCC would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the inspiring work of its volunteers and say ‘thank you’ for all the time, effort and commitment that the volunteers give to the society. The ISPCC currently has 543 volunteers nationwide who commit their time on a weekly basis to provide help and support to young people and families who engage with our services, additionally we have over 80 more volunteers currently in training. In 2013, ISPCC volunteers gave over 80,000 hours of their time to the Childline, Mentoring and Leanbh services with an additional 4,714 hours to help with fundraising initiatives ISPCC volunteers are the

strength of the society and without their commitment and dedication we would not be in a position to help and support so many children. When it comes to volunteering everyone has something to give and so much to gain from getting involved in the experience. Volunteerism in many ways is a two way benefit; volunteers become part of a team and while the experience can be fun and rewarding it can also help develop skills and knowledge base. Ashley Balbirnie, ISPCC Chief Executive, today said; “For the ISPCC it’s the volunteers’ contribution that keeps the society running and in the position to support so many children and families. Without volunteer dedication the ISPCC could not continue to provide a 24 hour listening service to young people in Ireland. We have always been a volunteer led agency and we simply

could not exist without the dedication and unwavering support of our incredible volunteers. On behalf of the ISPCC I would like to thank each and every one of them for giving up their time each week to listen to our nation’s children.” The ISPCC continually recruits for new people to join their dedicated volunteer team. If you have a few hours to spare, or you’re looking for a new challenge, contact us today in relation to joining our existing team of highly skilled and motivated volunteers. For more information please log on to www.ispcc.ie/volunteer Last year Childline received nearly 700,000 calls and contacts from vulnerable children reaching out for help. Our Childline service is unable to answer 1 in 3 calls due to a lack of funding. With 95% of our Childline services funded

by donations we really need more support for this vital service. You can donate by texting the word “Childline” to

50300. Text cost €2. A min of €1.63 will go towards the charity. Service provided by Like Charity.

Fine Gael Senator for Dublin South-West, Cáit Keane, has today, (Wednesday) welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills that 10 schools; 4 Post- Primary and 6 Primary, in Dublin South-West will undergo works over the Summer. This is part of a national programme which sees €35 million invested in a further 386 schools.

“This is the second round of funding for the Summer Works Scheme (SWS) 2014 which will aim to upgrade toilets and roofs in primary and secondary schools nationwide.

Dublin South-West students deserve to learn and to be taught in safe, warm and secure schools. This is a significant investment by the Government and a strong indication of our dedication to prioritising investment in school buildings.

“3,578 students in the Dublin South-West area will benefit from the second

round of the Summer Works Scheme. These works are scheduled during the summer months when pupils are on holidays and there will be minimal disruption.

“This news is also a welcome boost for the construction sector in Dublin South-West which has suffered during the economic downturn. These jobs will support the community while improving the facilities available to our children. It is estimated that 4,200 direct and 840 indirect construction jobs will be supported across the country as a result of the scheme.

“I am also very pleased to see that 80% of applications submitted for this funding have been approved. Schools in Dublin South-West who identify and decide on projects they regard as a priority have a good chance of seeing their applications approved.”

The following is a list of the schools to benefit from

On Wednesday, August 1, 1888, the Dublin & Blessington Steam Tramway (the DBST) opened for business. The first train was the 8:35 a.m. mail train eavingTerenure for Blessington. The tramway used the Irish standard gauge of 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm).[2] The tramway connected with the horse-drawn trams from the city.

An extension of the line to Poulaphouca was opened in 1895, and the Blessington and Poulaphouca Steam Tramway was incorporated, with through-running from Terenure from 1896 until the extension was closed in 1927.

In 1911, a major proposal was put forward for the electrification of the line as far as Crooksling, but the intervention of World War I meant that this was never put into effect.

In 1929, the Paragon Omnibus Company began operating a through bus service between Blessington and the city centre, eliminating the requirement for passengers to transfer between the DBST and the Dublin tram at Terenure. This struck a fatal blow to the DBST.

Last-ditch efforts were made in 1931 to have the DBST taken over by either the Dublin United Tramway Company, or by the Great Southern Railways. This

did not come to pass, and so it was, that on 31 December 1932, a wet Saturday night, the last trains ran on the DBST lines, the 6:15 p.m. from Terenure to Blessington, and the 10:30 p.m. from Terenure to Tallaght.

Many people were killed in the tram days, including many who were the worse for

The Dublin and Blessington Steam Tram

drink, who were knocked down by the tram which was known to appear suddenly and silently from around a turn in the road, or behind a hedge. In one case, a conductor was thrown to his death from the swaying trailer car. In Templeogue the bodies of the dead were taken to the local pub the Templeogue Inn. This occurred so often the pub became

known as The morgue

I would firstly like to thank everyone who has sent in nominations for Tallaght Can Smile. This is something we started last month and whoa what a response. There are so many happy go lucky people and people who just have that natural ability to be pleasant all the time that go unrecognized, but we plan to change that.

Nominations already received are still stored so yours may come yet. I have taken liberties this time I suppose and decided to nominate Maria Creighton myself. I have been getting

fuel, as most of us do, at Topaz beside The Square and each time I go in this lady in particular always has a smile and a friendly chat or remark. I used to think that if the company ever awarded the staff for customer relations she would win hands down. I must say all the staff here are very good but Maria is the one who has made me smile. Thank you Maria for making Tallaght smile.

I would also like to thank Topaz for allowing us to make the presentation at the premises.

Letters To HomeHi my name is Peter. I am a 22 year old from Citywest. My mam text me and told me Tallaght Express have a new feature called “Letters to home” and they want peo-ple from Tallaght who have moved away to write and let them people know how things are going abroad. One of my friends moved to Canada just over a year ago and kept asking me to come over. I was a bit hesitant at first because I had never actually been away from home before but it all sounded so good I thought I will try to save a few bob and go.

I saved every penny and got some help from my family (thanks guys) and booked my flight for January. I arrived in Toronto where my mate and his friends met me at the airport. I was feeling pretty rough when I arrived but got better after a couple days of that fine Canadian air and being spoilt rotten by my fine friends who looked after me and took me to see a few sights. We went up the CN Tower the second day after I arrived for a lovely view over the city which was great although we spent more time queuing than seeing.

We also went to see the Niagara Falls which was pretty amazing and I’ve never heard anything like the noise of the falling water. You see these things on TV but never imagine what it would be like.

After a week on the honeymoon period. It was time to look for work because I knew although I’m here to have a good time I need to get a job to survive.

I studied engineering at Tallaght IT and thought I would look for something in that line. Although they say there is plenty of oppurtunities here it took me a while to get the type of job I wanted. I worked in an Irish bar (typical) for a while in the evenings just to get going before I got a job

with a Canadian engineering firm. I work with a couple of lads from all over Ireland, mainly Galway who have been a big help in getting me settled in. I met a lot of people when working in the bar who I hope to keep in contact with.

I have been here a few months now and I am really enjoy-ing it although I hope to move on and see another bit of the

My adventure in Canada

world before I go home, yes Ive got the travelling bug now.

I probably spend more time talking to my family now through skype and facebook than I did when I was there. They are all excited to see my letter in the paper and said they would post me a copy when it comes out. Thanks again for giving me this chance..

Game Reviews JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle

FrankMovie Reviews

JoJo’s All Star Battle is based on a manga that follows the supernaturally gifted descendants the family Joestar through generations and through parallel universes. In this game powerful fighters with insane, eclectic style face off against each other in the firmly-established tradition of Street Fighter or Tekken. So basically it’s about two people beating the crap out of each other until one of them is no longer able to get up, but it’s really not that simple. There are some games that are accessible to just about anybody, and some games that require a little bit specialized knowledge and prior experience to really appreciate. Then there’s JoJo. It’s based on a comic that’s run for nearly 30 years, spilling over with numerous allusions to rock bands, singers, and Western pop-culture in general with a visual style that starts somewhere near Fist of the North Star and progresses to the glammed-up, stylized look of high fashion magazines. The impressive, 3D renditions of these characters have the texture and detail of hand-drawn art. The posing never stops -- and neither do the references to specific individuals, scenes, and events. Characters go from one outrageous animation to the next in battle, taunting their opponents or harnessing power for their signature moves. Outside fights they’ll even comment on which menu options you’re selecting. This is, without a doubt, a game for the fans.If you don’t have any previous exposure to the JoJoverse, playing the game might feel like downing a few packets of Kool-Aid without adding any water. This mega-dose of unfamiliar flavor could really put you off… kind of like how super-concentrated essence blasted out of a vampire’s eyes can burn holes in your face. The story mode sadly fails to bring players into the world with bland recaps of events from each story arch, telling fans what they already know in the most uninteresting way possible and crunching down pages and pages worth of action and drama into quick and dirty spoilers to people who aren’t up to speed. You’ll still spend more time here than in arcade mode, though, since you’ll need to fight through “now beat this guy” missions to unlock additional characters. All Star Battle doesn’t make an effort to teach players how to play the game either, but the option to simply mash one attack

button to create a combo means anyone can deliver a basic beatdown and enjoy some fancy animations. Fights take place in arenas with limited 3D movement letting you dodge attacks or maneuver around danger zones that trigger stage hazards like a crashing chandelier or runaway car. The overall feeling is a bit stiff, and the combo-centric fighting is disappointingly generic, but a huge cast and a few interesting touches capture some of the source material’s distinctive flair. Each of the dozens of characters falls under one of several fighting styles, like meter-building Hamon (hah-moan) users and fighters that supernatural projections called Stands. There are a few interesting playstyles here, and some of the personality and feel of the comic manages does come through. Taunting your opponent after a knockdown shakes their confidence and drain some of their accumulated power, for example. And there’s a super move that actually fills your opponent’s life bar in the interest of fairness before delivering an incredible amount of damage. The moves the various JoJos bust out are pretty crazy, but most bizarre thing you’ll encounter is the micro-transaction-powered, cash-grabby campaign mode. Here players can unlock extra costumes and voice clips by spending energy to participate in random fights. It doesn’t take long for a unit of energy to recharge, but you’ll need to fight boss characters repeatedly if you’re not willing to burn extra energy to increase your damage. Even if you’re willing to spend cash to speed up the process, it’s a dull grind. Consider this mode the dismal duty of the superfan, or the last resort of the truly bored soul with nobody else to play against. You could instead hop online for a versus battle. You’ll typically find the matches to be stable if a little sluggish. If you’re really into JoJo, or really into fighting games, or both, you’ll be able to see through the messy design, pick out the good stuff and have some fun with it. Otherwise you’re likely to be beaten and bewildered. But if an outlandish outfit or impassioned line of dialogue piqued your interest you were watching the review, consider looking up the manga or checking out the anime. You might be able to come back and look at this game with a better appreciation for the bizarre.Score 7.0Reviewed on Sony PlayStation 3.Written by Justin SpeerSource: http://www.gametrailers.com/

Before the spring and summer massive blockbusters start rolling on to the big screen it’s good to try out something completely different. And Frank certainly is that. It’s good that decent actors are happy to take a chance and push themselves.

Michael Fassbender has certainly taken a risk by appearing, sporting a papier-mâché head. And Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a particularly troubled woman with a rather vicious penknife, The story sees a would-be singer-songwriter Jon who chances on an opportunity to join a band and express himself and live out his dream.

Domhnall Gleeson, now announced as part of the new Star Wars franchise, plays this character, losing his own Irish accent for a more nerdy English one. Jon joins the band which sports an unpronounceable name - Soronprfbs - and ends up living with his fellow musicians as they attempt to create an album. Leader of the group is the enigmatic

Frank, with his fixed facial features who seemingly can only exist as this alter ego.

The head rather bizarrely is in fact based on Frank Sidebottom, a creation of the late British comedian Chris Sievey’s iconic comedy character.

This movie has plenty of humour and is far more interesting when it’s in this mood. However, the final third rather lapses into the melodramatic which is a pity. The music, which is the focal point of Jon and Frank’s creative spirit, is rather off the wall and won’t interest many.

Fassbender’s Frank is the centre of attention, but Gleeson shows he is a talented actor and it’s no wonder he’s lined up for bigger projects.

Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy, as fellow band members, provide solid enough performances but this is a story about the relationship between Jon and Frank.

The Burning QuestionHow is your child preparing for Junior or Leaving cert?My daughter is doing her Junior and is as nervous as anything. She is studying well but has very little confidence and doesn’t think she will do well. We keep telling her that she will be fine but kids worry too much these days… Jane 44 Old Bawn

I have a son doing his Leaving and is so laid back and couldn’t care less. His headmaster says he has so much ability but can’t get him motivated. Although he has always been like that he surprised me when he did his Junior and passed everything so please God he will be fine. Geraldine Citywest

My daughter is doing her Leaving Cert exam and even though English is not our first language she is expecting to do very well. Her teachers say she

should pass with flying colours. She is doing grinds on different subjects 3 times a week so hopefully she passes. I just hope her expectations aren’t too high as she is such a good girl and really wants high points. Christina. Jobstown

My son cant wait to get his Junior finished so he gets his 3 months holidays. I think he will be off for 2 weeks and will get that bored he will be wanting September to come quick. He is studying quite well sometimes but X-Box takes priority with him most evenings. We try and get him to study 2 hours a day but it’s hard for them to study by themselves. I keep telling him that I wish I had stayed in School when I was his age and went on to college. I think kids can only do their best. John Fettercairn

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has launched the Energy Policy Green Paper for Ireland marking the beginning of a ten week public consultation on the future shape of Ireland’s energy policy.

The Minister’s speech at the launch can be found www.dcenr.gov.ie/greenpaperspeech and the Green Paper Consultation can be accessed www.dcenr.gov.ie/greenpaper.

Minister Rabbitte Launches Green Paper on Energy Policy Ireland faces significant inter-related challenges in relation to climate change, energy sustainability, security, and competitiveness. These can be addressed by transforming Ireland’s economy from one based on a predominantly imported fossil fuel to a more indigenous low carbon economy centred on energy efficiency, renewable energy and smart networks. The Government is determined to ensure that the needs of the citizens of Ireland are also at the core of this necessary transition. Energy infrastructure must benefit society

as a whole and everybody should be able to afford to adequately heat and light their home. Giving consumers more control over their energy choices by providing them with options through efficiency programmes and promoting real and active competition will empower consumers to make decisions that can benefit them.

Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte T.D., today urged members of the public to engage in the public consultation process on our future energy policy before the deadline of 31st July 2014 saying: “Any discussion on energy takes place within a complicated framework of competing and interconnected energy priorities but also across all sectors of the economy. It is timely to take stock and question the reasoning behind our energy policy approaches. The Energy Policy Green Paper recognises the complexity of the energy landscape and the importance of pursuing policies beyond competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply that recognise the significance of energy policy’s contribution to promoting economic recovery”. The Minister added. “A progressive energy agenda is needed. We are embarking on a new avenue of ending our energy island isolation, reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthening our leadership position in niche areas of energy technology expertise. It is therefore timely to take stock and question the reasoning behind our energy policy approaches, ensuring that we proceed on an evidence-based approach, in order to set a fresh example for meaningful energy policy discussion and on-going dialogue in shaping a new policy framework for the years to come.”

is to use this as an excuse to bring up the subject casually and in private. Ask him what he thinks about what people have been saying. Do not involve or consult with you friends this is between you two. As cringey as it sounds, this will be the only way to work out what’s really going on.Tina

Dear Tina,I’ve recently got engaged and am having some doubts. I’m 33 and am worried that if I were still in my early twenties there is absolutely no way I would be marrying this particular man. We have a great time together going to the pub and going rambling, and have lived together happily for three months now. But it suddenly occurred to me the other day that actually he is a bit of a nerd. He already wears Hush Puppy shoes and thick geeky glasses, and he has a mild stutter. I can’t help thinking I’m just getting a bit desperate. Body clock ticking and all that. But perhaps if I waited a bit I’d meet someone more suitable. Please tell me I’m being crazy. Letitia

Dear Letitia,You aren’t crazy. There can’t be a bride alive who didn’t have some doubts before the big day. Even Cinderella might have debated if the whole Prince Charming slipper thing made him a sweet guy or a bit of a stalker. I haven’t met either of you so it is hard for me to judge, but just from reading your letter the positive seems to outweigh the negatives. You have a great time together and you even enjoy living under one roof. It doesn’t really matter that you wouldn’t have married this slightly nerdy man when you were in your early twenties because you’re not that person any more. Sure, he’ll never go clubbing, but is that really what you want?I think that you see your youth receding into the distance as you approach the aisle, and that’s never a pleasant feeling. The trick is to keep your eyes forward on the happy future you will have with this man. Keep positive and don’t make any rash decisions you may regret later.Tina

The 2014 Aviva Schools’ Track and Field Season is underway with over 20,000 young athletes having already competed in the 14 regional competitions held across the country over the last couple of weeks. The Aviva schools competition programme encourages young people to get active and compete in a wide variety of track and field events. South Dublin’s Nadia Power (St Mac Daras) has been in fine form this season with a comprehensive victory in the 1,500m at the West Leinster Championships last week. Power will hope to continue this good form with another victory at the Leinster Championships on Saturday. Power’s schoolmate Carla Sweeney is another of those in search of a Leinster title as she competes in the Inter girl’s 800m event.

In the sprint events Sean

Lawlor (Kylemore College) will start as the favourite in the inter boy’s 100m event as will Irish Junior 60m record holder Keith Doherty (Drimnagh Castle) in the senior boy’s sprint events. Harry Purcell (Castleknock College) will target a double over 400m and 800m.

Next up for all these athletes will be the prestigious Aviva All-Ireland Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on the 31st of May.

For the intermediate age group there is the Aviva Tailteann Interprovincial in Santry on the 21st of June. This will be followed by the Aviva Schools’ Track & Field International, which takes place this year in Cardiff, Wales on the 19th of July.

John Foley, Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland said “Following on from the highly successful Aviva Schools Cross Country Season we are delighted that Aviva

South Dublin Athletes Target Title’s At Aviva Leinster Schools Track & Field Championships

continue to support Irish Schools athletics. Their continued support allows us to deliver a quality competition programme for all

schools athletes and to increase participation in the sport.”

Mark Russell, Sponsorship

Manager Ireland, Aviva said “This is our fourth year as sponsors and supporters of Irish Schools Athletics and it is great to see the talent improving year on year. We are now in the position where we can see senior schools athletes from four years ago beginning to make an impact internationally and at this Leinster provincial final let’s hope we will be watching an Olympian of the future. It’s a massive achievement for anyone to make a provincial final and it means so much to the athletes, their friends and family so let’s all get behind supporting these young athletes”
