This past fall students enrolled in the Sport Administration degree program spearheaded the start-up of a new student club on campus. The Sport Leadership Club (SLC) was organized to assist students in gaining work and leadership experience, while developing a professional network.

“We had a core group of students enrolled in the major that recognized an opportunity to capitalize on sporting events in the region to gain practical work experience,” states club advisor Pete Van Mullem (Business Division). “By organizing as a club they have expanded the number of opportunities available to them and they have done a wonderful job of representing Lewis-Clark State College in the local community.”

Internship at UI Provides New Experiences for Recent LC Grad

As he prepares to work the NCAA Regional Basketball Tournament in Spokane, WA (UI is serving as host for the tournament), Matt reflected on his experience as an intern with the University of Idaho (UI) athletic event management team. "Two years into college athletics and I cannot express how much I appreciate what KC has done for me”, states Matt. “Allowing someone with no experience to get their first taste of the industry is something that cannot be measured. The insight I've received continues to guide me as I look forward into my career."

Over the past two years the Sport Administration degree program at LCSC and now the SLC have developed a partnership with the University of Idaho (UI) Athletic Events Management team and UI Athletics Event Manager, KC Sheffler. The partnership has been mutually beneficial providing LCSC students the opportunity to earn valuable practical experience during live sporting events and provide KC a valuable staff of students, interested in the field of sport management and administration.

In the past two years, students have worked a volleyball tournament, Vandal football games, and the 2015 Big Sky Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament. “KC has embraced the opportunity to provide our

students practical work experience in the sport industry,” states SLC faculty advisor Pete Van Mullem (Business Division). “We greatly appreciate his willingness to make this partnership work and our students are really benefiting from his commitment to the next generation of sport professionals.” A recent graduate of the LCSC Sport Administration program, Matt Ramstead (15’) has benefited greatly from this partnership. “Over the past 2 years, Matt Ramstead has worked nearly every University of Idaho athletic event. His hard work and dedication have earned him progressive levels of responsibility. Matt went from an unpaid intern to a part time paid employee of the University,” stated KC. “My hope is that through this partnership, we can give more young professionals like Matt an opportunity to learn and develop skills in the sport management field.” Matt’s experience at UI includes all Vandal Athletic events, while also coordinating for athletic groups, special events, sports clubs, intramurals, ROTC and several community groups.

Proud LC Alum Makes Partnership a Success

1

Rob Nelms could not control his enthusiasm as he embraced Clarkston High School (CHS) senior, Dylan Beeler, following his 3rd consecutive state wrestling championship; something that has never been done before at CHS. “He deserved it,” stated Rob, “all of these guys worked extremely hard all season, and I definitely feel like this third place trophy was earned by everyone [on the team].

An assistant coach for the CHS Wrestling team, Rob is currently finishing his degree in sport administration at LCSC and is a member of SLC. In addition, to his role on the wrestling team at Clarkston High School, Rob is completing internship credits under CHS Athletic Director, Shannon Wilson.

2

An Orofino native and proud LCSC Alum, Shannon oversees 13 sports and also serves as Vice Principal at Clarkston High School. During his tenure at CHS, student-athletes have achieved numerous accolades on and off the field of play. Most recently the boy’s basketball team captured back-to-back 2A state championships. Shannon’s passion for sport and LCSC has never waivered. “I love giving back to my alma mater. One of the ways I give back is having student interns. The interns are an excellent help in the Athletic office and get real life, hands-on experience,” states Shannon. “The students are always professional and actually give me insight and new ideas to use along with experience for them. It's been a great partnership.” Rob is the third student in the past three years (Kelli Rice 15’ and Stephanie Quackenbush 15’) seeking a degree in sport administration to work directly with Shannon on managing the day-to-day operations of a high school athletic program.

3

Over the past three years, Shannon has also served as a guest lecturer in sport administration classes, participated in the Dr. Bob Frederick Sport Leadership Lecture Series, and provided students opportunities to experience the management side of sport by serving as crowd control at CHS home football games. “We really appreciate Shannon’s commitment to helping us (students at LCSC) gain new experiences,” states Rob. “This opportunity provides us with real-life, hands-on experience at a school with successful athletic programs for boys and girls. Being able to draw from his experience is an advantage that other LCSC students should take advantage of.”

in sport that were able to share important insights into the sport world. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many successful people that were willing to connect me to possible career paths for the future."

The Dr. Bob Frederick Lecture Series honors highly respected Dr. Bob Frederick of the University of Kansas for life long commitment to teaching, coaching, and athletic administration. Revered for his value-driven leadership style, Dr. Frederick always put the best interest of the students and student-athletes first. The speakers in the lecture series exemplify his commitment to treating people with dignity and respect and helping young people develop and achieve success.

This past October, LCSC hosted the 3rd Annual Dr. Bob Frederick Sport Leadership Lecture Series. 15 leaders in the sport industry shared their insight and experience on topics related to leadership, teaching, management, motivation, and professional development. “The lecture series is a wonderful opportunity for students and the community to learn from and connect with leaders in the sport industry,” Event Director and LCSC Business Division Associate Professor Pete Van Mullem said. “We are very fortunate to have speakers on campus that are well-respected in their field across the northwest and nationally.” SLC members participated in the series by introducing the speakers and helping to facilitate their visit. In addition, SLC Vice President Randi Smith used the opportunity to gain valuable internship hours as the event coordinator. "The lecture series was an incredible experience for me,” stated Randi. “The speakers are professional leaders

are needed to run an event will help me if I ever need to run a similar tournament in the future,” stated Garrett. “I learned that everything runs most effectively when there is solid communication amongst the group of workers as well as an unselfish attitude towards the mission of SLC.”

3

LCSC’s Director of Athletic Facilities, Mike Benke, coordinates the event set-up with the Whitepine tournament managers and he helped facilitate the opportunity for SLC. “The SLC Club made the event an enjoyable experience for everyone,” explained Mike, “The Whitepine Tournament managers were very happy with the group and thought they performed their job duties at a high level. I can speak for them when I say we are hoping this is an arrangement we can continue in the future.”

4 Whitepine Basketball Tournament Gets an Assist from SLC

During the month of February fourteen local high school basketball teams converge on the LCSC Activity Center for the Whitepine District Boy’s and Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The tournament is a qualifier for the state tournament held in Boise. SLC members served as game day staff for the event, assisting with the ticket gate and program sales. In addition, SLC club president Garrett Ramstead helped coordinate SLC’s member hours throughout the event and gained some great insight into tournament management. “Seeing the amount of moving parts that

running an athletic program,” shared Kylie. “It is clear that Kylie understands what it takes for an Athletic Department to be successful,” states Allie Canfield, LCSC Athletics Operations. “Kylie shows an articulate maturity we don’t often see in students her age. She has been able to manage the public during her role as the volunteer coordinator intern for the World Series, and has been able to teach others her own age how to set up and run a successful AAU youth basketball tournament.” When asked about her career path, Kylie responded, “Working in the

athletic office here at LC has shown me that I picked the right major and I look forward to a career in sports.”

This past year, sport administration majors are also completing internships within LCSC athletics in sport information, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, and event management.

SLC member Kylie Schumacher has discovered endless opportunities to build her resume working behind the scenes for LCSC Athletics. Tasked to serve the athletic department in many different areas, Kylie has participated in event set-up, game-day management activities, and most recently she has been developing a cohesive schedule for 1700+ volunteer positions at the upcoming 2016 World Series. “Working in the athletic office has allowed me to experience everything from facility management, to event coordinating, and all the day to day activities that go along with

LCSC Senior, Darrell Wagner retired from Buckley AFB Colorado after 22 years in the US Air Force and left his stable career in logistics behind to return to LCSC to finish his degree. The former LCSC baseball player knew he wanted to reunite with his passion for sports and decided to pursue a degree in Sport Administration Due to a growing partnership with the City of Lewiston Parks and Recreation Department, Darrell was able to complete a summer internship under the supervision of Recreation Coordinator, Brandon “Beeg” Johnson. “We greatly appreciate the willingness of Tim Barker (Parks and Recreation Director) and Brandon to continue expanding internship

opportunities for our students,” states Pete Van Mullem, Associate Professor in Sport Administration at LC. “Both of them have made a commitment to building strong community relationships and we are glad to be a part of that network.”

Johnson shared a similar sentiment, “the connection between LCSC students and Lewiston Parks and Recreation is incredibly important. Our partnership makes Lewiston

stronger and network greater.” During his summer internship, Darrell fulfilled multiple roles in administering and organizing recreational opportunities for youth in the valley. “My experience with Beeg was very positive because he enlightened me to the advantages of developing good people skills, shared Darrell. “His networking expertise allowed me to see how connections within the community and the business environment could make accomplishing tasks much easier and fun. I also enjoyed the work atmosphere at Parks and Rec. because he could couple a sense of duty to get the job done with a passion for making sure it’s done in a fun manner.”
