THE BENCHMARK : JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 1 Another long, cold, snowy winter appears to have finally passed. Easter is usually a good indication that spring is here and the snow will not return for another seven or eight months. It looks like we’re reaching that point where the temperature will regularly remain above 40 degrees during the day, which means numerous projects really get going, and back to work for many of our members. SAFETY Every year at this time, I like to remind everyone to think about working safe. Put your safety training to use and remember to watch out for your fellow Brothers and Sisters. It’s not worth risking injury by rushing or not following safety procedures. Your personal safety is too important to take unnecessary risks. TRAINING I know many of our members listened to leadership and took advantage of their down time to maintain or improve their certifications. I cannot express how important it is to be ready to go once the weather turns and jobs become available. For those who still need to obtain certifications, check our website, oh-kyadc. com, or contact one of the training centers as soon as possible. They can let you know when the classes you need to take will be held. These classes, especially the safety classes, are for your benefit. Many contractors now require the OSHA 10 certification within the past 3 years. Keep your OHSA 10 card and drug card current. Without them, you will not be allowed on most sites. Don’t let a lack of certification keep you from working. IN CLOSING As always, my phone is on, and my door is always open. It’s shaping up to be a good year, so let’s be sure to work safe and demonstrate why we are the most skilled workforce around. But maybe not the kind of opportunity you might think. I see more political and economic struggles ahead for the working class. I see more and more obstacles that unions must overcome in the future. I see a public that has some terrible misconceptions about what unions are, and what they do. I see our enemies lining up against us in order to make one final move to eliminate collective bargaining and workers’ rights. So why do I see opportunity? See OPPORTUNITY Page 2.
