The people of St. Andrew have been called by God to embrace, equip and
encourage persons of all ages to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. e3
words from Pastor John
In 1844, Henry Alford penned the
lyrics, “Come, ye thankful people,
come. Raise the song of harvest
home.” These words quickly
captured the hearts
of the people as a
response of
gratitude to God for
the harvest. It
continues to be one
of the most popular
of all our harvest
hymns. I love the
instructions that are
given for the singing
of this particular hymn: It is to be
sung joyously and enthusiastically
at the annual gathering of the
crops on or near Thanksgiving Day.
As I read the words the melody
comes to life in my mind. We, the
people of God, have much to be
thankful for.
This season of thanksgiving that we
are entering into is one that brings
not only a renewed sense of
gratitude, but remembrances of
Thanksgivings past and the
possibilities that are ever before us.
I remember our family
Thanksgiving celebration three
years ago. There were three
members of our family who were
expecting. Today I am anticipating
the gathering of the family once
again. Those three energetic
toddlers, along with the rest of the
family, will come together to share
and to give our thanks to God for
the countless blessings that He has
bestowed upon our family. This
year at our gathering, we will have
two (maybe more) members of
our family
who are
expecting.
We have
much to be
thankful for.
In the life of
our church
family, we
will gather
together on Sunday, November
18th in a special way to express to
God our thanks and gratitude for
our many blessings. We will all
gather together for one combined
worship service that will begin at
10:30 am. Following the service
we will come together as a church
family to share a special fellowship
meal with one another. There will
be turkey, gravy and mashed
potatoes, and everyone is invited
to bring a side dish or dessert to
share. Can you think of a better
way for the church family to come
together and give thanks? I look
forward to sharing that day with
you. May God continue to richly
bless you and your family.
In Ministry With You,
Pastor John

The St. Andrew prayer chain is always available to pray for you. Contact Jean Watts at 426-7469. Prayer requests can be made at the Atrium prayer box, online at standrewumchurch.net under “let us pray for you”, or by calling the church office. Every week, a group of people pray for the needs of our members, our church, our community, our country and world. Prayer notes will also be sent to those being prayed for if you provide an address to either Melinda Nutter or the office.

Care and Prayer
We do appreciate all the prayers, calls, hugs, and cards from our St. Andrew church family at the passing of my mom last month. We have been com-forted the last three years knowing that those of our church were thinking of our family during her illness. Continue to pray for my dad. Carolyn and John Ach
On Sunday, No-vember 18, we will be collecting donations for the annual Wesley Center Thanks-giving food drive. The need
is greater than ever, given the state of our economy. We need mostly non-perishable food items, although we will also accept fro-zen turkeys (no other frozen items, please). If you wish to make a monetary contribution, the Wesley Center staff can use the money to supplement the food items as needed. Checks should be made out to St. Andrew so that Walt can write a single check. This is our chance to share some of the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. Grocery bags will be available at all services on November 11 as a reminder to collect food during the next week. Greg Williams

STARS CHRISTMAS BRUNCH
Join us on December 12 for
our annual Christmas Brunch. We will gather at the home of Ken and Diane Hutton at 10 AM. Bring a dish to share. Table service and drinks will be provided.
Let's Dream Big in 2013 Let's together think how close we are to great-ness at St. Andrew; our youth ministry, our music program, our service to our congregation, our ministry to those in need. With just a little financial push we can get from good to great. Each committee is giving to the Finance Com-
mittee their requests with careful attention to cost contain-ment but a view of what our short-term future can be in 2013. We are close to greatness.
To dream big we must all participate in the movement, helping with programs, youth direction and ministry outreach to our community. Time, talent and money are the three keys. Today you can help by making your 2013 steward-ship pledge. On your pledge card you will see where we have asked for a small increase from 2012. This increase takes into account increases in regular expenses plus committee requests to take a step beyond. Billy Graham said it best, "Give me an hour with someone's checkbook, and I'll tell you where his heart is at". Please pray and consider how you can provide to St. Andrew your time, talent and money for 2013 and don't be afraid to Dream Big in 2013. Sincerely, The Stewardship Committee

good community turnout but it takes each and every one of us to supply items for the 10th to make this wonder-full event.
There are sign-up sheets posted with a number of ways you can help, so please help to make this year the best ever!!! Questions? Jane Henry--426-8428

Why do we go to church? Many of us would proba-bly respond, "To meet with God." But few Christians would deny that God can be encountered in our homes and workplaces. I am convinced that one of the reasons that church attendances are in decline in so many parts of the world is our failure to an-swer the question of the church's value effec-tively. As we proclaim God's omnipresence, and en-courage people to become aware of God's presence and activity in their daily lives, the gathering of the church has begun to seem unnecessary. But, when we recognize that the liturgy is about forming us into Christlikeness, we discover a com-pelling answer to the "why church?" question. As William Willimon recently tweeted, "There is not one rite of the church that is not an educational, forma-tive act." Everything we do in our worship is de-signed to teach us and form us. As we gather week after week, we open ourselves to God's values, God's mission, and God's purpose. We receive a vision of what the world would be like if God's Reign were fully manifest within it, and we learn the attitudes, motivations and habits of God's Reign. Then, as we leave, we are sent out to live in our daily lives what we have seen, heard, and learned in the sanctuary.
This means that every act of worship needs a "destination." As we design our liturgy, we need to keep in mind the specific "message" of our worship for that gathering. As we gather for worship, even if we are not leading or designing the service, we need to be listening for the specific "word" for the week that we will take with us into our lives. Each prac-tice within the liturgy needs to work toward the mo-ment when we are sent out with a specific Gospel task for the week. I call this the "gift" of the wor-ship. It's the thing that we take with us that enables us to live our faith a little more effectively during the week. When we understand that our worship gatherings are meant to teach us how to live as full followers of Jesus, we are compelled to gather. As we face the daily challenges of living, and as we seek to be faith-ful to Christ, we cannot help but recognize that the Christian life does not come naturally. It must be taught and practiced, so that our natural responses, attitudes, and habits become true to God's Reign. And when we know that, each week, we will receive the gift of a new insight and a new, practical way to apply God's truth to our lives, we come to worship eager to learn and with the expectation that the hour we spend in liturgy on Sunday morning will change every other hour of our week.

One of the many ways we, and all of you, can support the Red Bird Mis-sion in Kentucky is by saving Cou-pons for Education. I, for one, did not realize the vast number of prod-ucts containing coupons. A basket is located in the Gathering Grounds—please leave all coupons there and I will see that they are cate-gorized and shipped to Red Bird. Red Bird Mission have already pur-chased one van with coupon pro-ceeds and are on their way to getting another one. So, you can see, cou-pons do pay off. Your support to this project will be appreciated, Any questions can be directed to me at 426-1956.Thank You, Chris Watters
Christ the King Sunday: When is it? What is it?
This year Christ the King Sunday falls on November 25. Interestingly, 2012 is one of those rare years when Christ the King Sunday does not coincide with
the first Sunday of Advent. (Advent begins on Dec. 2 this year.)
The following description of Christ the King Sunday comes from Dr. Mark D. Roberts, Senior Advisor and Theologian-in-Residence for Foundations for Laity Renewal, located near San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Rob-erts’s website is http://www.patheos.com/blogs/markdroberts/
Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday of the Christian year (sometimes called the liturgical year or the church year). On this Sunday, we celebrate the coming reign of Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. We delight in the fact that when Christ reigns, the world will be restored, peace shall reign, justice shall be estab-lished, and all people will live in the fullness of the kingdom of God.
Every Sunday, Christians gather to celebrate the victory of God through Jesus Christ. The one who was crucified was raised on Easter Sunday, thus defeating sin and death. On Christ the King Sunday, we shout to Christ the Lord with gratitude for his sacrifice. We announce his vic-tory to the world, inviting them to join us in our celebration: “Shout to the LORD, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy!” (Psalm 98:4).
On Christ the King Sunday, we complete the cy-cle of the Christian year. It began almost one year ago with Advent. In that season prior to Christmas, we set our hope upon God, yearning for our Savior, as did the Jews so many centu-ries earlier. Today, we celebrate the fact that the Savior came, born in a manger. That he
lived among us, proclaiming the kingdom of God. That he died, taking upon himself the sin of the world. And that he was raised from the dead, breaking the power of sin and death itself. Christ rules today as King of kings. This we celebrate, even
as we look forward to the time when we will enjoy fully the life of his kingdom.
United Methodist Student
Day is November 11.
Meredith Leigh Paul is eager to help developmentally chal-lenged children find their voice and communicate with others. She wants to give them what she has received from the United Methodist Student Day offering: the gift of hope.
“I want to work with children with special needs as a speech pathologist; that’s what is on my heart,” says the 20-year-old college student from Ra-leigh, N.C. She is a recipient of the Rev. Dr. Karen Layman Gift of Hope Scholarship, funded by the church-wide special offering.
The scholarship aids United Methodist students at accred-ited colleges who have shown leadership in their church. Indeed, they become gifts of
hope for a denomination in dire need of more young leaders to chart its course into the future.
Paul says she feels “blessed and grateful” for her scholar-ship, especially when many other students have had to surrender their academic dreams because of rising costs and shrinking financial aid. “It’s nice to know your church is there for you. It strengthens my faith.”
Your gifts to United Methodist Student Day help students like Meredith Paul continue their education and their faith jour-ney as they strive to make a difference in the world and discern what God has planned for them.
Please give on Nov. 11
