COMMANDER’S COMMENTS

On Sunday the Camden Light Artillery celebrated Armed Forces Day with our semi-annual Brunch at Stone Grill in Clementon, NJ. There were 21 attendees, including two representatives from the 119th CSSB family readiness group. The food was great and the company wonderful. Thanks to CPT Warren Strumpfer and CPT Marc Kantor for setting it all up. I wish I could explain the closeness that exists in the small group of people that continually support each and every one of our functions. It’s a group of people that not only take pleasure in remembering the past but also knows how to enjoy the present. As we grow older these wonderful feelings of yesterday and today help us to look forward to all of our tomorrows. Our next brunch is scheduled for September 11th, in memory of Patriot’s Day, at the same location, time is 1100 hours. Everyone is invited.

Commander’s Report: We have officially kicked off our preparation for the 2012 Dine Out. The Commander started it off by pledging a $100.00 AD and asked others to not only consider taking an AD, no matter how small, but to please help others to do the same. The 2012 Dining Out will be held on March 3d at the Tavestock Country Club. Due to increasing cost, tickets have been increased to $50.00. Please mark your calendars. I would like to have everyone walk away with something more memorial then we have ever had in the past. This takes money and the AD book will help us achieve that goal. Congratulations to CPT Marc Kantor and 1SG Ed Powell for their nomination and approval to receive the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara at our next Dine Out. The membership is reminded that THERE IS NO MEETING FOR JULY. More importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish LTC Jake Parvin a very Happy Birthday. Jake turns 93 this month and all our best wishes go with this very remarkable soldier.

Museum Report (CW Elberson): Although there was a considerable amount of rain, the museum was not affected by any leaks – this time!

Search Committee Chairman (LTC Bovino): 1SG Joe Scioli has offered to run for the command of this association. The search for a successor Adjutant continues.

Financial Review: CPT Strumpfer is prepared to offer his report at our August meeting.

Family Readiness Group Representatives: Joan & Sue from the 119th CSSB FRG committee were present and offered the association the opportunity to help support their efforts to raise funds for their organization by attending a Beef and Beer event on July 23d. See the flyer attached.

Question: If anyone knows of someone who has, and would like to sell, an M1 rifle please contact Col Radice at 609 323-7304.

There being no more items to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 1945 hours. Our next meeting is August 3d. Enjoy the summer. Pizza and beverages were served.

CANADIAN BEAR SIGN

Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, hikers, hunters, fishermen and any persons that use the out of doors in a recreational or work related function are advised to take extra precautions while in the field.

We advise the outdoorsmen to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as to give advance warning to any bears that might be close by so you don’t take them by surprise. We also advise anyone using the out-of-doors to carry “Pepper Spray” with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between black bear feces and grizzly bear feces. Black bear feces are smaller and contain lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear feces have bells in it and smell like pepper.

MILITARY EVENTS IN JUNE

1775 – Birthday of the US Army.

1812 – War is declared on Great Britain.

1865 – The last Confederate forces surrender.

1941 – The Army Air Corps becomes The Army Air Forces.

1944 – D-Day The Allied forces invade Normandy.

FAMILY SUPPORT REMINDER It is important to remember that we still have soldiers on Active Duty in a combat zone and those that have returned who have not been able to forget they were there. It’s also appropriate to remember the families they left behind.

TARAWA – WORLD WAR II

(This is the seventh of a twelve part set of short comments on Wars fought beginning with the American Revolution through the Iraq War)

In 1943 the United States formulated a “Strategic Plan for the Defeat of Japan” that involved capturing a series of islands to establish an attack route from Hawaii to the Japanese mainland. The Marshall Islands were the first link in the chain, and on Nov. 20, 1943, the U.S. attacked tiny Betio Island in the Tarawa Atoll in an effort to gain control of the 4,000 foot airfield the Japanese had constructed there. But the island was heavily garrisoned, and the tide was unusually low at the time of the attack. With numerous landing crafts stranded at sea, wave after wave of Marines waded to shore under withering firepower. Out at sea, pilots aboard the USS Lexington cheered the success of their aerial sorties, but the artillery bombardment of Japanese positions was poorly managed. During the bloody three-day battle to take Tarawa, 1,677 American soldiers died. Of the roughly 5,000 Japanese who opposed them, only 146 survived.

THE BOSS

A Company in search of a shake-up hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, he noticed a man leaning on a wall. In a room full of workers, the CEO saw a chance to prove that he meant business.

He walked up to the man and asked, “How much money do you make a week?” The man looked at him and replied, “Two hundred a week. Why?” The CEO handed the man $200 in cash and shouted, “Here’s a week pay. Now get out, and don’t come back!” The man shrugged and left. Feeling good about flexing his muscle, the CEO looked around the room and asked, “Does anyone want to tell me what that slacker did here?”

One of the other workers sheepishly muttered, “He was the pizza-delivery guy.”

Answers to the Short Quiz

1. San Francisco 4. Victor Hugo

2. Day-O 5. 140

NEVER FORGET THAT

A Veteran – whether Active Duty, Retired, or National Guard or Reserve – is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount of “up to and including my life.”

“No one should pass an American in uniform without saying, “Thank you, we are grateful.” Always mindful that they are prepared to risk all of their dreams so that all of us can reach ours.”

Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen

TO ALL OF OUR FALLEN COMRADES

Each of us has a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the “tomorrow.” You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success!
