Congratulations students and
staff for a job well done! The all-
important MCA testing is com-
pleted for the 2016-2017 school
year and preliminary results will
be sent home with student report
cards at the end of this school
year. Formal results will be
mailed to families in September.
You may ask, what is MCA
Testing? The Minnesota Compre-
hensive Assessments (MCAs) are
the state tests that help districts
measure student progress toward
Minnesota's academic standards.
Reading and Mathematics
tests are given in grades 3-8, 10
and 11. Science tests are given in
grades 5 and 8 and once in high
school, depending on when stu-
dents complete classes in life
sciences but usually in 10th grade.
By Mrs. Kraemer District Assessment Coordinator
The Elementary Yearbooks
have arrived! If you would like
one, please let me or Mrs.
Kraemer know. They are still
$10 each! We have worked very
hard on making sure everyone
was included in this yearbook
several times.
This yearbook was made
completely online. Individual
pictures and some group pic-
tures were taken by Scherling
Photography from Fargo, others
were taken by myself or Mrs.
Kraemer.
The High School year-
books have also arrived. There
are some extra copies. If you
would like one contact Mrs.
Kraemer, Mikalya Dahlen, or
Skyler Hill ASAP. Cost is $35.
**Remember the signing party!**
The FFA Fish and Wildlife
team along with the Small Ani-
mals team traveled to the Twin
Cities for the state convention
April 23 through 25. The Fish
and Wildlife team took 4th overall
in state!
They had no individuals in the
top five but had a very good team
score. The Small Animals team
tested and are still waiting for
their results. The participants got
to stay in the cities for three days
and enjoy meals at restaurants of
their choice. The state convention
is a great atmosphere to be in.
Jump Rope for Heart is a
fundraiser for the American Heart
Association. It is also a fun way
to get exercise and learn about
your heart. Did you know that
thousands of kids are born every
year with hearts that do not work
exactly right?
By doing Jump Rope For
Heart, you can help other kids.
So have fun
and exercise
with your
jump rope
and raise money.
Ashby Jump Rope for Heart
kickoff was March 22. Elemen-
tary students raised $4,212 dol-
lars. The top people to raise
money were Hunter Hanstad in
4th grade and Emily a Evavold in
3rd grade with $200 each.
What’s happening is that the
K-12 Spring Concert will be held
in the Auditorium on May 9, at
6:30 p.m.
The theme for this year is “A
Musical Extravaganza”. Mrs.
Kraemer is directing the kinder-
garten through third grades. Mrs.
Umlauf is directing the fourth
through sixth graders, the bands,
and the high school
choir. It will all be
recorded by the
AHS Video Club and
DVD’s will be sold for $5 the
night of the performance.
The second and third graders
are doing a musical called “Hats”
which celebrates what is under-
neath the hat. The first, third and
fourth graders are planning a spe-
cial surprise for the audience. The
High School band and choir also
have a lot of great songs to per-
form.
April Students of the Month

There is a new trend going
around in the Starbucks world and
for the most part, it’s not a good one.
Starbucks has a new drink
that changes color when you mix
it around called the Unicorn Frap-
puccino. People are going crazy
over them, but when they taste
them they're unsure if it’s good or
not.
While this drink may sound
delicious, the Stratford Health
Department called out the drink’s
high sugar content. This new
magical drink holds 59 grams of
sugar; that is over two times the
amount of sugar recommended by
the American Heart
Association.
If you’re going to
stop in and get one
make sure you don’t
have any other sugar for
the rest of the day.

Lamb grown in artificial
environment
Imagine a growing a baby in
an artificial womb; sounds like
science fiction right? Not really
now. Researchers have shown it's
possible to nurture and protect
lambs in late stages of gestation
inside an artificial womb. This
technology could become a life-
saver for many premature human
babies in just a few years. Cur-
rently babies born at or before 25
weeks have a low survival rate,
and it’s the leading cause of infant
mortality and morbidity in the
US. With this new tech the babies
can continue developing. This can
make the di fference be-
tween severe health problems and
a relatively healthy baby. http://www.sciencealert.com/researchers-

West Fargo Public Schools
are waiting for the final report of
what the extermination company
found in the school after a student
and staff member report being
bitten by something. Students and
staff returned to L.E. Berger
school Monday.
The district communicated
with parents on Sunday to alert
them school and activities would
be regularly scheduled.
The company hired to investi-
gate the situation at Berger Ele-
mentary found nothing that would
impact the safety of children or
staff.
The bites happened in two
different areas of the school and
neither people saw what bit them.
The district says the staff member
was bit Thursday and the student
on Friday. The bites are small in
size.
The theory is that it was most
likely a bat.

Ashby Softball has had a
tough season this year. They
won against Wheaton/Herman/
Norcross on April 21, 2017. The
score was 1-0. Ashby was led
by Courtney Koefod and Riley
Zastrow who both reached base
twice for the Arrows with Koe-

game.
On Friday April 28, they
played against West Central
Area and lost by 2. The score for
that was 8-6.
The record for softball is 1-
5. The next couple of weeks will
be full of games to end the
school year!
The Arrows played Clinton
Graceville Beardsley (7-6 loss),
Hancock (11-8 loss) and Hill-
crest (5-4 loss). Each game
ending in extra innings. The last
three games the Arrows have
played have been tight all the
way to the end. A few key er-
rors are what have brought the
losses to us.
The Arrows baseball team is
scheduled to play Brandon
Evansville in the cities. After the
game we will be attending a
Twins game when they play the
Red Sox. After the game we will
go out to eat and spend the night

Cody Fults, 4. Benton Stadsvold,
and 5. Noah Johnson.
Spots 3, 4, and 5 are very
competitive with a lot of shooters
nipping at their heels. Some of
our first year shooters are finding
some good rounds as seventh
grader Carter Spangler shot a
24/25 on Saturday morning and
on Sunday morning Christian
Norby shot a 19/25.
Hopefully we can have some
of the younger shooters give the
older shooters a run for their

Alvin York was the third old-
est of a family of eleven children.
His father’s name was William
York. He was born December 13,
1887 in Pall Mall, Tennessee in the
northern section of Fentress
County.
York had only nine months of
schooling his whole life and
worked at a railroad near his home.
Alvin York was drafted in 1917
and was known as a deadly accu-
rate shot and a partier. He was a
heavy drinker but changed because
his best friend died in a bar fight.
Alvin witnessed a revival of a
dead person by a Christian priest
so he changed his ways and be-
came a Christian. He married
Gracie Williams in 1919 and they
had 10 children.
At the age of thirty he was
sent a draft notice and wrote back
saying that he didn’t want to fight,
but was forced into war anyways.
York was known as the great-
est American hero and most deco-
rated Army soldier of WWI.
He died on September 2, 1964
from chronic physical problems.
He was buried in the Pall Mall
cemetery with full military hon-
ors.

Witches of East
End is not only a
book; it was also
turned into a T.V.
show.
The T.V. show
still centers around
a mother (Joanna) and her two
daughters, though the daughters
were never told that they were
witches. In the T.V. show Freya
and Ingrid have a curse on them
that whenever they die they
would automatically be born
again. This time when they were
born again Joanna decided to not
tell the girls about their powers
although when their aunt comes
to town she starts slipping them
little clues about their powers.
Once they find about their
powers they find out about other
witches in the town and learn that
they have a brother that their
mother was forced to leave be-
hind.

This week for my restaurant
review I’m going to do a sand-
wich shop that I hold near and
dear to my heart, Jimmy John’s.
Jimmy John’s is a sandwich
chain that makes subs ‘Freaky
Fast’ and they’re freaky good. If
you have ever been to this restau-
rant you’d know that they make
their bread everyday to give your
sandwich a fresh crunch. They
also cut all of their vegetables and
meat in store that same day.
My personal favorite combo
is the “Slim 5” with salt and vine-
gar chips along with a Dr. Pepper.
I like this sandwich because there
isn't a lot of meat and fillers in it
so I can taste the bread; the bread
is my favorite part!
If you ever have a party or
event, you can call Jimmy John’s
and they will cater with whatever
sandwiches you want. They also
please their customers by having a
customer appreciation day every
year. On this day they
make sure every sub
is one dollar. Make
sure you stop in or
make them a part of
your next event! There is a Jimmy
Johns’ in Alex next to WalMart.
