Our Times Published bi-monthly by Pride Community Center of North Central Florida
PCCNCF - “What's Next?"
You are invited to a community meeting at 2:30 p.m. on June 7th at
the community center, 3131 NW 13th St, Suite 62 in Gainesville.
PCCNCF was born from community meetings 15 years ago and we hope you will join us
with your hopes and ideas for the center as we come together to decide where we go
from here. The purpose of the meeting is to engage the entire community in planning
for the future of the Pride Community Center of
North Central Florida and the Pride Festival.
PCCNCF is at a critical turning point in its history
and we need you, the LGBTQ community of this
area, to help decide what direction we'll be taking in
the near future. We know that the success of the
center is contingent on the support and input from the entire community so we will have
an open dialogue about the needs of the community and the role of the community
center.
We're also looking for people who want to be involved in
leadership and decision-making, who are willing to take on
responsibility to determine what the center is going to look
like next year and the years after that. We're hoping to
expand our board of directors and discover folks who want
to participate at all
levels to keep PCCNCF
a vibrant, relevant
community
organization in North
Central Florida.
There’s still work to
do. We need you to
join us for this
important community
meeting.

Special Screening of The Committee
On Thursday, June 4th at 7pm there will be a special screening of
the documentary The Committee, a film about State Senator Charley
Johns and his secret legislative committee to expel Gay and Lesbian
professors and students from the state public university
system. Chuck Woods, Senator Bob Graham, and others are featured
in the film. The filmmakers are trying to raise money to get the film
broadcast on Public Television. They have a crowd-sourced funding
campaign at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-committee-
public-television-campaign.
In order to prepare the film for national broadcasts, the filmmakers
must pay for Errors and Omission Insurance, purchase broadcasting
rights for imagines, sounds and music, and hire a company to produce
FCC required closed captioning, among other things. Once the
filmmakers have completed these tasks, the film can broadcast on any
PBS station around the country and can then be distributed for
scheduling.
The Committee has screened in Film Festivals around the world and won numerous awards: Hampton
Dunn Broadcasting Award, Broadcast Education Association Award for Mixed Video, Love Your Shorts
Film Festival for Best Documentary, International Jury Award for Best Documentary, Durban Gay
& Lesbian Film Festival, South Africa and a prestigious Suncoast Emmy Award for Best Historical
Documentary. Many people have seen this film and have been moved. Now it is time to bring the story
to a national
audience on broadcast television. Come out to the event at the Pride Center and see the film. If you can,
support the funding campaign. Most importantly, tell people about this project and what they can do to
help. Find us on Facebook to know the latest news: https://www.facebook.com/thecommittee.

Needed
If you have looked at the
Gainesville Pride website
recently, you know that we
need some help. I have been
struggling to keep even the
most basic information up on
the site and between my
limited skills and even more
limited free time I haven’t
been able to keep it up. If you
have skills with HTML and
WordPress we could really use
some assistance and this
would be a great way to
contribute to the community
from the comfort of your own
home. After the initial
upgrade, I anticipate about
two hours a week would be
sufficient to keep the site
updated. If you are interested
in helping out, please drop me
an e-mail at
[email protected] or give me
a call at the community
center at
352-377-8915.

May/June 2015 Our Times 7
Gay Movie Night
Hosted by Pride Community Center on the
last Friday of each month at 7:30pm, this is a
free service to the LGBT community. A $2
donation is requested to cover snack and
refreshment costs.
May 29: “Love or Whatever”
This hysterically funny
film is the story of Corey,
a good-hearted guy who
seemed to have it all - a
successful career as a
therapist, an exuberant
amount of charm and a set
of gorgeous engagement
rings, ready to pop the
question to his long-time boyfriend. But when
his better half commits the ultimate betrayal
and dumps him for a woman, he fumbles
through a wild and often hilariously disastrous
journey of self-discovery.
June 26: “Five Dances”
The classic tale of finding
success and romance in the
big city is given a
contemporary, and
unconventional, spin in
Alan Brown’s new film. He
has taken five gifted New
York dancers, and
fashioned a story about
Chip, an extraordinarily
talented 18 year-old recently arrived from
Kansas who joins a small downtown modern
dance company. Shooting in and around a Soho
dance studio, the film captures the exhilaration
and emotional turmoil of a small dance
company, and all of Chip’s poignant firsts with
the intimacy and immediacy of a documentary.
Transgender Social
Group Movie Night
Join Spectrum and PCCNCF for
Transgender Movie Night, the third Monday
of each month at 7:00pm.
May 18: “Paris Is Burning”
Penetrating the tight-knit
community of minority
drag queens living in
New York City, Jennie
Livingston's acclaimed
documentary offers an
early glimpse at the art
of "voguing," the
underground dance style
later popularized by
Madonna in her hit song.
The film also explores issues such as racism,
homophobia and AIDS, while offering a
detailed examination of the intricate Ball
culture, in which queens are judged for their
style and expression.
June 15: “Boy Meets Girl”
Growing up in
conservative Kentucky,
Ricky has always
regarded himself as a
woman in a male's body
but isn't able to make a
connection with the right
man. Then he meets the
stunning Francesca, who
compels Ricky to
reevaluate what love
means to him.
