The Tucson Jewish Community Center is a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, is affiliated with the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, and is a member of the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America.

Award-WinningThe Tucson JCC received awards earlier this year for communications and programming efforts at the JCCs of North America Biennial in Atlanta, Georgia. Nearly 1,000 people from the U.S., Canada, Israel, and countries in Latin America and Europe attended the meeting of JCC leaders and volunteers.

Program and Practice Innovation and Recognition Awards were presented for Marketing, Board Development, Interagency Collaboration and Special Needs. Special “Exemplary Awards” were presented to acknowledge the Sculpture Garden, Fabulous Faygeleh Film Festival; and “Beyond Basics,” a continuing education program for staff.

Holding the awards at the JCC Biennial Convention were Board Chair-Elect Tom Warne, Secretary Stuart Shatken, Vice Chair Barney Holtzman, Board Chair Fran Katz,CEO/PresidentKen Light, Andy Shatken and Marcia Light.

Future LeadersCongratulations to Julie Gal-Or, Development Associate and Event Supervisor, who was selected as a JCCA Graduate Scholar! The Jewish

Community Center Association (JCCA) offers scholarships to people pursuing graduate degrees in a field of study related to a future career at the JCC. Julie is currently working towards her MBA at the University of Arizona and will graduate in May 2011. As part of this program, Julie will be able to participate in conferences and other professional development programs with the JCCA and has agreed to work at a JCC for at least two years upon graduation.

Shining StarsOutstanding staff members and friends of the JCC were also recognized at the Annual Meeting. Ken Goodman was named Volunteer of the Year and Jill Rosenzweig, Leader of the Year.

Scott Zorn, Director of Children, Youth and Camping Services; Debbie Hood, ECE Receptionist; and Veronica Ochoa, staff person in the Sports & Wellness Department were honored with the Beth Stern Award for Staff Excellence. Nancy Miles and Ann Kepford were given the Early Childhood Education Professional Excellence Awards.

Imagine a Sculpture in Your HomeEver look at a sculpture and wonder how it would look in your home? Diane did just that when she visited the JCC Sculpture Garden. She was interested in a Moira Geoffrion sculpture and asked Betsy Cowan (JCC Director of Arts & Culture) about it.

Buying a piece of art is a major investment, so a JCC photographer went to her home and took pictures of locations she was thinking about placing the sculpture. Back at the JCC, our designer took those photos and using Photoshop, inserted the sculpture into the photos of her backyard so Diane could see how the piece would look. She loved it and purchased the sculpture.

Send a Kid To CampWe would like to thank all of the families who donated to the 2010 Send a Kid to Camp scholarship fund. So far we have raised over $9,000 for summer camp scholarships. This helped the JCC to leverage additional funds and give away in excess of $40,000 in financial assistance to families who needed help to be able to participate in camp this summer. Thanks to our donors, many children will have the opportunity to experience Camp J. Personal TrainingIntroducing Kettlebell Training at the JCC. If you are interested in burning fat, building muscle, or increasing strength and stamina, Kettlebell Training is for you. You can sign up for personal one-on-one training with our certified Kettlebell instructor Nancy Manning, or enlist for our group class that meets three times a week for six weeks, and are offered mornings and evenings. Members must participate in an orientation conducted by our instructor to determine whether Kettlebell training is appropriate for them. While the Sports Display, Inc. company compensates the JCC for the op-portunity to use this space and gives us a chance to promote some of our own programs, we want our members and support-ers to know that advertisers are not directly supporting the JCC when they purchase advertising from Sports Display.
