SAN FRANCISCO - Online radio lis-tening in the US has more thantripled in the past two years, accord-ing to new research unveiled at theNAB Radio Show in San Francisco(September 20-23).

The news of the demise of the music business hasbeen greatly exaggerated.

If the scenario described by JP Morgan andunveiled in our exclusive front-page story proves to becorrect, the music industry is poised to grow from a$38 billion to a $65 billion industry in the next tenyears. So much for the merchants of doom, predictingthe collapse of this sector under the threats of freedownloads and "new business models" such asFreenet or Napster.

The study doesn't minimise the impact of digitaldownloads and admits that labels, especially majorcompanies, are "under pressure" because of "disin-termediation" (who on earth invented such a word?)and digital piracy. But it does 'seem to give the musicindustry the benefit of the doubt concerning itsadaptability to survive the impact of the new ways ofdistributing music. Majors will most probably seetheir overall market share diminish, but, as the "potof money" becomes bigger, they will also thrive in thenew environment.

The analysts at JP Morgan strongly believe thatthe rise of the Internet will have a great impact onartists such as Chuck D, who will be able to managethe distribution of his works on the Web without thesupport of major companies. The US rapper himself,in the exclusive interview he gave to M&M, speakswith passion about how the Internet helped him cutout the middle man.

Interestingly, the study introduces an analysis ofthe impact of digital piracy on the industry.The assumption made by the authors of the study isthat, as record labels increase the number of pro-tected files of new material on the 'Net, piracyis most likely to affect catalogue material which isnot protected.

But, as the years roll by, today's current repertoirewill become tomorrow's back catalogue and is lesslikely to be pirated because it hadbeen already protected. As aresult, digital piracy will probablyenjoy a peak in the middle of thedecade and slowly decrease, with-out ever totally disappearing.

This, of course, is one scenarioamong many. But it is certainlynot the worst one for the musicindustry.

GWR rides on Internet HiWireby Jon Heasman

SAN FRANCISCO - UK radio groupGWR has become the first Europeanradio broadcaster to sign up with UScompany Hiwire, enabling the inser-tion of audio advertising spots intotheir streaming Internet broadcasts.

The ability to strip out local adsand replace them with targeted spotsrelevant to listeners outside a sta-tion's TSA is seen as an important

breakthrough, espe-cially given that out -of -area listening current-ly accounts for a highpercentage of most sta-tions' online audience.

GWR's commercialdirector Simon Wardsays: "Our deal withHiwire allows us tobroadcast economically

en masse via the Internet and offers awide range of revenue possibilities asbroadband becomesmore accessible toconsumers."

Ads broadcastvia Internet radiousing Hiwire's software can not onlybe tailored to individual countries,but also the gender and age of the lis-tener. These details are gleaned fromlisteners filling in a questionnaire thefirst time they download a station'sstreaming audio.

Thus listeners in the US who tuneinto to GWR's national UK station,Classic FM, via the Net will hear, in afew weeks' time, American ads (soldby Hiwire with a percentage of rev-enue going back to GWR) during com-mercial breaks instead of simulcastsof Classic FM's UK ad breaks.

Show in San Francisco, the agreementwith GWR will initially apply to Clas-

sic FM before beingextended to GWR'sother music por-tals -such as Clas-sic Gold, Core and

Planet Rock -as well as its local koko-branded Internet sites which are cur-rently in development.

Speaking to M&M at the NAB,Hiwire founder and president JimPavilack described the GWR deal as"very exciting" and said that hehoped the contract with GWR wouldpave the way for similar deals withother major European broadcastersthrough Hiwire's newly establishedParis office. He also revealed that thecompany would shortly be announc-ing a major domestic deal with "oneof America's two major syndicators"within the next couple of weeks.

Internet sales included in UK chartsby Gareth Thomas

LONDON - Internet music sales ofalbums are to be incorporated into theofficial UK album chart for thefirst time.

Four online music companies-Audiostreet, Boxman, BOL andJungle-will provide album salesinformation to be submitted to com-pilers CIN/Millward Brown for inclu-sion in the weekly chart.

The move will be the first timeonline purchases have been includedin the UK charts and recognises theimportance of e -commerce music sales.

The official music charts in bothSweden and Finland have includedcountry -specific Internet sales informa-tion since 1998. Tony Salter, ,CEO ofBoxman, one of the companies supply-ing sales information, welcomes the UK

move: "The inclusionof e -commerce salesmerely reflects thereality that more andmore people arebuying online."

Salter says Inter-net sales can affectthe very top end ofthe charts. "Thiswould have been thecase a few weeks ago when only a fewhundred album sales separated Whit-ney Houston from Britney Spears forthe number one spot," he says. "If oursales had counted towards the chart,the result probably would havebeen different."

Operations manager at chart com-pilers CIN, Paul Clifford, said it wasimportant that the chart reflected thetrue number of album sales in the

UK. "CIN is welcoming onlinefigures to strengthen the offi-cial sales report and increaseartist competition across allplatforms," he says.

Site manager atAudiostreet, James Kendallwelcomes the development."It's about being able to sup-port the UK record industry,he says. "Lots of companies go

abroad but we believe it's importantto support our own territory."

"It's important to get in there beforethe charts become meaningless. Themore information they can get, the moreaccurate the charts will be" he adds.

The new methodology will comeinto force on October 1. The albumchart is announced each week as partof public broadcaster BBC Radio l'sofficial music charts.

Todomusica makes changesto annual music trade fairby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - Sweeping changesare to be made to Spain's onlymusic fair, Todomusica, follow-ing discussions between organ-iser Rafael Revertand director ofPopkomm, UliGrossmaas. As aresult of the talks,a joint Latino fairplanned for nextyear has also beenpostponed.

"We will stage concertsaround Seville two or threedays before the fair," saidRevert following the talks."The first two days will be forprofessional visitors only, witha last day or two for the gener-

But he says he remainsoptimistic, adding that it took11 -year -old PopKomm somefive years to become wellestablished.

Swedish licences get extendedby Jason Christie

STOCKHOLM - The Swedishbroadcasting authority RRTVhas announced all 83 localcommercial radio stations areto be granted an eight -yearextension to their licences.The licences2001 with stations beingcharged existing fees.

The announcement comesin the wake of a debate in the

Swedish Parliament over howto allocate the country's 10outstanding frequencies.Since 1995 no new frequencieshave been created and it willbe at least April 2001 beforeSweden gets any new localcommercial stations. Syndi-

stations, like NRG,WOW and Radio City, willbenefit most from the renewal.

If proposals put forward byRTVV had been accepted, all

commercial stations wouldhave put forward tenders in a"beauty contest" with thewinner being granted areduced four-year licence.

Nina Rosenkvist ofRTVV says: "If the propos-als had become law thisspring, each licence wouldhave then cost SKR 40,000(4,735). As it stands theoverall future of Swedishlocal radio is unclear."

German pop group ATC recently performed a showcase in front of BMG International market-ing executives and the media in London (September 18). The group, whose members hail fromNew Zealand, Italy, Australia and the UK, have sold over one million copies in Europe of theirdebut single Around the World. The track was number one in Germany for six weeks and brokeairplay records there, as well as going top 20 in France, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark andSweden. Hard day's night for DJ DifoolPARIS - David Massart eats,sleeps and drinks radio.

The scheduling managerat Urban/CHR station Sky -rock, Massart, aka "Difool",has scheduled himself topresent the station's late -night and breakfast shows.That means Difool finisheshis evening show at mid-night every weekday only tobe back on air at 6.30 thenext morning.

"It is an experiment," saysthe station's general managerLaurent Bouneau. "Peoplewill go to bed with Difool andwill wake up with Difool, livefrom home. It can only workbecause he is someone whobreathes and lives for radioall the time."

Bouneau says the experi-ment is due to last for a fewmore weeks before they eval-uate the programme. "Ithink it strengthens ourmorning show," saysBouneau who adds that ithas no noticeable impact onDifool's professional input atthe station. "He remainsscheduling manager andcomes to work late in theafternoon. He then works onfine-tuning our schedule."

ON THE BEATLYCOS BUYS SPRAY NETWORKS

STOCKHOLM - Lycos Europe has announced it is takingover SwedishInternet portalSpray Net-works in a dealworth SKR 5.7

billion (0.6 billion). Spray's services include Internetradio Spraydio, which has nine music and lifestylechannels. It is estimated the new venture will have 8.7million registered users and 19 million unique visitorsin 12 countries per month. Lycos Europe says its strat-egy to offer a broad media outlet for all technical plat-forms will be strengthened by Spray Network's knowl-edge of mobile internet and broadband. Under thedeal, Spray will take over a large part of Lycos' prod-uct development but Lycos and Spray will continue astwo brands addressing different audiences. Bertels-mann is a major shareholder in Lycos.

UK COLLECTING SOCIETY IN WORLDWIDE DEAL

LONDON - The UK's Performing Rights Society (PRS)is close to signing agreements with collecting societiesaround the world that would allow thepartners to license one another'srepertoire for global use. At the soci-ety's annual general meeting, JohnAxon, director of performance licens-ing, said collaborations with bodiessuch as BMI and ASCAP in the USwould develop into plans to license tracksfor live webcasts. He suggested that PRS would setdaily online licensing packages beginning at £1.37(2.27) plus VAT (Value Added Tax) for low music -usesites, and a percentage of revenue for high -use sites.

SWEDISH TV AND RADIO MERGER PROPOSEDgrockaimm - The head of the Sweden's national publicbroadcasting corporation, Maria Curman, has proposed amerger involving all three arms of the corporation-Sveriges Television, Utbildningsradion and SverigesRadio. Emap launches Q radioby Gareth Thomas

LONDON - Emap Perfor-mance Network is launchingQ-Europe's biggest monthlymusic maga-zine-as amusic TV chan-nel and digitalradio station.

The newchannels arepart of Emap'sprogramme ofbrand extentionsacross all media, and followthe launch of music magazineSmash Hits -branded showson Emap's Big City radio net-work and on TV channels TheBox and Sky One.

QTV, available on SkyDigital, will follow a formatsimilar to Emap Perfor-mance's Kiss TV and TheBox, where viewers canchoose videos from a selectedplaylist. There will also beshort programmes based on

CD reviews and celebrityinterviews.

Chief Executive of EmapPerformance, Tim Schoon-maker, says: "There will prob-

Schoonmaker says the QRadio will be aimed a"grown-up" market. "It will

recognise the Q reader as aperson with a broad taste,who likes Eminem andMacy Gray-but also TheStereophonics and Radio -head," he says. "It's aimed atsomeone who's interested innew music, but with a fewoldies but goodies thrown in.When I say oldies, nothingpre -1980."

Q Radio, due to go on airnext year, will be Emap'sfourth digital audio format,following on the heels of Kiss100 and the Big City andMagic networks. Emap al-ready owns a number of mul-tiplexes and intends apply-ing for new licences as partof the Digital Radio Group.

Schoonmaker admits thedigital radio take-up will begradual and dependent onthe price of receivers. "We'rebuilding the platform for it.But it'll be four or five yearsbefore we expect it in people'scars and homes," he says.

Telstar UK band BBMak received their first gold discs in New York for their debut albumSooner Or Later on Hollywood Records, marking their RIAA certification for shipment of500,000 albums in the US. The discs were presented to the group by their publisher AnnaJolley of UK company Strongsongs, who flew in specially for the evening. Their first singleBack Here has peaked so far at Number 13 in the Billboard Hot 100 during a 20 -week stint.The party was also joined by Mark Jolley, consultant to Telstar for BBMak, and the man whooriginally signed the band in the UK during his time as head of A&R at the company. I Online research needs to hit targetWhile Internet technology is giving radio listeners newways to access their favourite programmes, Europeanstations are also using the web to conduct musicresearch to ensure they are the ones that get listenedto. Kai R. Lofthus reports on how programmersare trying to develop online research strategieswhich maintain the integrity of traditionalcall -out methods.

The reputation of onlineresearch is somewhat under-mined by the worrying amountof informal voting polls andquestionnaires that web

surfers often find themselves partici-pating in. It's difficult, however, toneglect the benefits of using theInternet as an additional tool forresearch purposes.

In the context of radio station call -outs, respondents-selected accordingto statistical procedures-can listento music and hooks in a better soundquality environment than the tele-phone can offer, and thus voice theiropinions on a larger amount of songsin a more convenient manner.

Net -literate listenersBut leaving the job up to occasionalweb surfers may be dangerous andcould potentially lead to meaninglessresults. Each participant must beactively pursued through traditionalprocedures.

So, generally, what types of listen-ers can you get hold of online? A studyconducted last June by BroadcastArchitecture, a Princeton, NewJersey -based research arm of theAMFM-conglomerate, reveals thatmost net -literate radio listeners aremen aged 15-24 who mainly lean

towards CHR, rock,or country -formattedstations.

Which excludesthe opportunitiesfor a programmedirector like Vranzvan Maaren at theNaarden, Holland -based AC -formattedSky Radio 100.7FM.He says the station'sonly involvement withonline research extendsto its `Muziekpoll' wherelisteners can surf in andvote on whether they likeor dislike three specific highrotation songs. But vanMaaren doesn't plan to step upany online research activities, say-ing: "The people that we can attractthrough the Internet represent just aportion of our audience. I want toknow what all of our audience [aged20-35] think about our music," hesays.

On the other side of the North Sea,James Curren, the London -basedmusic director of UK's national rockstation Virgin Radio, says: "We willdefinitely explore the possibility ofusing the Internet for research pur-poses. But we have to make sure that

Jim Sampson, executive editorof Munich, Germany -based rock/hotAC -station Bayern 3, who takes aslightly more cautious attitude thanCurren, notes: "Perhaps the way[online music research] would workbest would be on a call -out basis, get-ting a large enough number of[respondents], securing some sort ofdemographic information about them,and being selective in the use of peo-ple who you acquire for any musicsurvey.

"The one thing that you should notdo is to make it so cheap that it can be

easily manipulated, at best by fans, atworst by the record companies."

You get what you pay forTom Webster, formerly VP of EastCoast operations for BroadcastArchitecture, who has designed musicresearch strategies for AMFM-affiliat-ed stations in New York (includingZ100), Boston, and Philadelphia,agrees with Sampson, saying: "You getwhat you pay for. Some stations hopethat there are so many people bysheer numbers that will take the test,and they get around the concerns ofbias and sample. That's flawed,because only 30% would actually takeand finish a self-selected test on theInternet. And you have to considerthat this is 30% of those 35-40% whoare actually on the web.

"You have to combine something ofthe self-selected research and activelyrecruit listeners, to make sure youdon't get this fractional percentage ofa percentage that could be way off thecentral tastes of your audience."

Public enemy turns private advisorChuck D is no stranger to

controversy. Five yearsbefore the police beating ofRodney King triggered theLA riots, his group Public

Enemy were warning of the growingracial tension in America. The latestdispute the rapper has thrown himselfinto headlong is the current "hot pota-to" of music on the Internet. Unlikemany of his peers, notably Eminemand Metallica, Chuck D has beenvocal in his support of music sites likeNapster and MP3.com which offer freedownloads to the public. He alsobelieves that record companies mustnow embrace this new technology inorder to survive.

"I don't give credence to a lot ofartists in the music business becausethey know little about what they'redealing with anyway," he tells M&Min an exclusive interview. "Very few ofthem could handle five or six ques-tions that I'd give 'em-all they knowis they might be in the comfort zonelike a child given permission to playand that's what they do. In the case ofNapster, they do file sharing, and Ibelieve file sharing means new expo-sure to new songs, as well as to otherartists and is a way to bring new

From their reaction, the artistbelieves his audience were receptiveto what he had to say. "It was inter-preted very clearly that we're in a bigtransitional change, regardless ofwhether anybody liked it or not. And

Combined with his exper-tise on the subject, it is this commit-ment to putting his money where hismouth is that led the London branch ofleading US investment bank JPMorgan to invite the rapper over toLondon earlier this month to sit on apanel before its investors alongside

it would benefit a lot of these compa-nies to reposition their investment,"he believes.

Sub -contractingThe labels that have been quickestto harness the potential of theInternet seem to have been thesmaller independents that, byvirtue of their size, can adaptmore easily. So where does thisleave the majors? "The majorlabels should sub -contract someniche genre [specialist] thatactually might supply theartists, the information andunder -structure that they needto pick from in an A&R type of

role," Chuck D suggests, adding that"we think the majors might adopt toan MP3.com type way of thinking butthey'll sub -contract portal systemslike ours that specialise."

"We sub -categorise rap music andhip hop into 20 different genre nichesand it works well for us," he says. "Sowe have 4,000 artist submissions atRapstation and may have 10,000 byspring of next year, and we've yet todo any off-line marketing or promo-tion about our site. We haven't spentany money on advertising, but whatwe do is very clear, concise, strategicpartnerships and alliances with other

things on the Internet. So, it's like asatellite or space probe in that usesgravity to propel itself. I think the keyon the Internet is to realise that youcan't do everything for everybody-you have to be micro -focused and beclear on what you will not to asopposed to what you will take on. Andthat's why we see other dotcom com-panies turning into dotbombs-theytry to take the traditional measure ofsuccess and adapt it to this worldwhere it doesn't apply.

"One reason for coming five thou-sand miles [to the JP Morgan forum]is my Rapstation.com is the best rap

music and hip hop portal out there.We beat all our competitors in traffic,pound for pound, and really it's abusiness that's operating for less than$750,000 and there are businessesout there that've failed that spent $14million since May. So I told this panel,Rapstation is a template and proto-type for how to build a service areaand not lose money and make moneyand a level of investment would be agood thing," he continues.

"We call ourselves a `supersite'.MP3.com is a supersite. Napster is asupersite. These supersites are ontheir way to being superstations withbroadband. A supersite is something.that gives you quick access, can han-dle a lot of traffic, import/export, e -commerce. You need some good tech-nology and equipment to actually runthese things, so let's call them super -sites and educate the public on thedifference between the two."

Another Internet -based businessmodel that Chuck D brings to thetable is his Atlanta, Georgia -basedrecord company Slam Jamz. "I'vedesigned a prototype and a templatethat's ready to launch in November,

Slamjamz.com, a record label and it'san Internet -first label. There's a lot ofInternet labels out there but mymethod is a prototype as to how peo-ple should do record labels on theweb," he believes. "We specialise innot signing the artist but signing thesong and [retain] an option to publish.So it's no lock -down contract; it'ssomething that will build [the artists]and build us as well-build us cata-logue and build them positioning andgive them some money."

GlobalisationA crucial advantage Internet basedcommerce has over traditional busi-nesses is that local marketing cam-paigns can become international in aninstant. "You have off-line [market-ing] and you have on-line [and] theon-line world increases to be global,"Chuck D explains. "So what you haveis an expanding global market andmore people to reach. And this [theInternet] is the apparatus that reach-es them, so then that's gonna grow

and that's the area that's gonna han-dle a lot of artists.

"Of course I believe that the mar-keting and promotional aspects willdepend on genres and sub -genres andmicro-nicheing-and that's what we doat Rapstation. We micro -niche uponthe genre of rap music and hip hop,"Chuck D continues. "We globalise, weenlighten, we entertain, and we edu-cate people and we give them the toolsto not only be consumers-a lot of peo-ple make the mistake in the Internetworld of looking at the public as con-sumers-no, we look at the public asbeing participants to a service we pro-vide, possibly potential partnerswhether they're labels or artists them-selves. And then we provide a giganticoption for them to consume be satisfiedor pleased. And that's a whole differentbusiness model than the traditionalform of music which looks at the publicas being strictly consumers that wantto buy and support," he observes.

Ironically, the challenge faced bythe majors from online bootleggers isof their own making, Chuck Dbelieves. "The public have gottenripped off by the astronomical price of

Digital distributionHe continues: "The majors-theywant to get in with digital distribu-tion and think that you're gonnadownload a CD for the same priceyou're gonna buy it in a store, they'regonna [need to] refigure themselvesout and that's something we talkedabout [at the JP Morgan seminar].EMI are like, 'people are gonna haveto download this album for 24.99 [dol-lars]'-fuck that-if people see that

So,if they're making their records for lit-tle or nothing they can afford to getinto a system that will bring theirrecords in one by one and dollar bydollar and it'll all be a profit."

Even so, Chuck D concedes that"there will always be majors, it's justthat they can't sign everybody. Therewill be independents but it's just thatthey can't afford to do a lot of manu-facturing without it all being sold,and now we have the Internet whereyou can actually release your productwithout manufacturing."

Chuck D on the future"Two years in this business is lightyears in any other business," therapper asserts. "By 2002, I see mil-lions of artists and millions of labelsdisintermediating the major labelservice areas and creating a parallelindustry of its own-a parallel enter-tainment industry, not just music.With reliance on the majors but nottotal reliance.

"So a million artists, a millionlabels on the Internet to be quotedwith Internet radio stations, InternetTV zones which will bring people tovisual programming without justwaiting for television to give it tothem, and different levels of text andprint and different medias that you'venever seen before. With music comingmaybe more from TV games and videogames."

Chuck D believes that it is notjust the labels that need to change-retailers need to evolve as well."They'll have burners and they'll beselling traditional CDs," he tellsM&M. "I think the prices will even-tually have to come down. I thinkthat when you get a CD it better notbe more than £10, but then £10 tothe rest of the world...you know, tome, if I spend £10 over here that'sreally straight up $17 anyway, so itmight have to be £5. What we'replanning to do with Slam Jamz issell songs for maybe a pound -50cents US-and albums with five toseven songs on it no more than £5."

Sleeping giant awakens to soundof cultural change and hit albums

The shipment last week of overthree million units worldwide(excluding the USA) ofMadonna's latest offeringMusic-the biggest in the his-

tory of Warner Music-and the fate ofthe Corrs' latest album In Blue, arethe most recent signs that the oncesleepy major has regained some mar-keting muscle.

Warner is certainly helped by thedelivery of a string of hit albums thisseason, but at the same time it co-incides with a complete reassessmentof the company's marketing strategyand way of operating.

New roleAt the heart of the new system is anAmerican, Jay Durgan, who joinedWarner Music International (WMI)last April to become senior vice presi-dent marketing. The role Durgan wasassigned by Warner Music chairmanRoger Ames and WMI chairmanStephen Shrimpton, to whom he

Warner Music Internationalis engaged in a dramaticreassessment of its interna-tional marketing opera-tions. Emmanuel Legrandtalked to Jay Durgan,the recently appointedLondon -based Americanexecutive who is spear-heading this major culturalchange for the company.

American repertoire and-unlikeother majors like PolyGram (nowUniversal)-it didn't put as muchemphasis on getting repertoire totravel around the world.

reports, was the massive task to reor-ganise and give a new focus to WarnerMusic's international marketing oper-ations. For Durgan, a highly interna-tionally -minded record company exec-utive who worked in Japan for a fewyears before joining A&M and laterPolyGram, it was like a dream cometrue, as he had wanted to work for theUS major for a long time.

But he also knew that it was ahiige\ challenge, which would requirehim to make radical changes in themodus operandi of the unit, affectingboth the people's mentality and theoperational structure. As the mostAmerican -minded major, Warner'sinternational focus was mostly about

time it was a world structure with noAmericans at the top [executive]core-there were English, French,Dutch, German-which was fine withme and I thrived in that environment."

Among those executives was Ames,whom Durgan knew from his days aschairman of the UK company andthen as president of PolyGram in NewYork. Durgan worked for 11 monthsunder the new Universal regime, andfound the acquisition difficult to take."It was painful for me, personally,because so many people who hadinvested a lot in me personally andprofessionally were suddenly gone,"he says. "At the end of the day I didnot decide to leave there-I wasn'trunning away from anything, I wasrunning to something."

That "something" was WarnerMusic. Ames made a phone call toDurgan, and it didn't take much forhim to decide which way to go. InApril, he became one of the firstappointments made by Shrimpton,following his elevation to chairman/CEO of WMI. Of Shrimpton, Durgansays: "He is a great boss, very sup-portive and a great counsellor.Shrimpton and I need the marketingto crank up and we're going to snake ithappen. Give us the artists and whenwe get it we'll make sure we deliver."

Durgan took over the responsibili-

ties of Peter Ikin as senior VP ofinternational marketing. "AtPolyGram my job was to exploit NorthAmerican repertoire to the world out-side of the USA. Now the job I have isto oversee worldwide marketing,which has specific and defined ele-ments to it, and that's just a totallydifferent job," says Durgan.

Main objectivesThe brief he was given by Ames andShrimpton Was in itself a sign of thechanges Ames wanted to implementat Warner. "My two portfolios arebasically, drive the priorities andmove music around the world," saysDurgan. "Those are really good objec-tives. If am able to drive the priori-

ties, that basically speaks to havingpeople with the right portfolio,focused at the right objectives, obvi-ously with the right music and coop-erative artists, to be able to drive thatbusiness and take it to another level."

Durgan is keen to point out that italso means that Warner's overallfocus is shifting. "Warner was histori-cally a real margin driven companythat was not chasing market share-which I was very accustomed to atPolyGram and probably my counter-part at Sony also knows the gamereally well," he explains. "To a lot ofpeople it maybe looked like a switchfrom this margin game to the ideathat let's go after the market and let'sbe a bigger company; let's take thevolume of artists that sold three orfour [million records] and take themto five [million]; and the artists thatsold six [million] and take them totwelve [million]."

He continues: "We are trying toimplement some policy changes andjust basically address the things youhave to do on a day-to-day basis thatare somewhat contentious. We'vetaken those things and tried to givethem a formal policy so that they arekind of automatic, so that marketingdirectors and CFOs don't have to tryto sit there and reinvent the wheelevery time."

Based at WMI's headquarters atBaker Street in London, Durgan's firsttask was to reorganise his team andmake sure that "the objective of the

they've come to the forefront," enthuses Durgan. "There's repertoire thatserves local markets and the one that can also be exported. It's great! I'd liketo see more of it and if I can, I'll help. Europe is such a huge part of the worldmarket. It is a sophisticated place in a lot of ways. And if you can get itright, it can deliver world class products," he adds.

But the key, he says, is to first develop local acts into successes in theirown territories. Then, Durgan believes developing local success into region-al priorities and even further to global priorities can be a win -win situationfor local affiliates. "What people have to realise about local repertoire isthat it gives local companies great muscle in the marketplace because thesuccess of local repertoire also helps to sell all kinds of repertoire. It spinsoff a lot of things for the local companies."

However, he cautions that there might not be room for all, and that locallabels have to get their act together first. "Various non -European repertoireowners who want to place their repertoire in Europe don't fully grasp theimportance of local repertoire," he says. "You have to be very competitive."

Being an American, Durgan knows the importance of radio in breakingacts, but what he certainly doesn't want to see is European radio becomingas formatted as its US counterpart. "I would not want to see Europeanradio go the same way as American radio. But I'm an American and I amnot going to tell Europeans how it should be. However, I prefer it that way.Formatting in the US has reached such a level that I'm not sure I want todeal with that in Europe. Radio programmers in Europe do a great job atpicking different sorts of music. They are more open and they don't throwyou out when you come and see them with a Spanish or a German record.At least, they take time to listen to it."

"As far as human assets go, therehas not been a lot of change," com-ments Durgan. "Basically, we haveshifted people out of, say, theEuropean office and brought them inhere, and we've drawn from affiliatesin Denmark, England and whereverand taken the staff that existed and.put them in different slots."

Priority artistsDurgan's closest team comprisesAndy Murray, VP marketing, whosefocus is on developing artists(Matchbox 20 and Morcheeba are twoof the acts currently on this list), andDennis Ploug as VP ofstrategic marketing, with agoal to completely revampthe department while alsokeeping an eye on globalmarketing priorities. SueWildish is senior directormarketing, who focuses onnon -UK and USA repertoire,and Thomas Starckjohannhas been appointed VP mar-keting Warner MusicEurope. John Uran wasrecently appointed to look

Durgan says Warner is much morefocused on identifying material thathas global potential. "We have globalmarketing priorities and we haveartist development priorities," heexplains. "Global marketing prioritiespretty much are when the previousalbum had to sell one million units,and the artist has to be available to

Comments Durgan: "Inthis job, I kind of serve bothsides-I have to work with the reper-toire owners to make sure the musicis delivered to our people soon enoughso that they have enough time toactually sit down and think aboutwhat they are doing; and make surethat the repertoire owner and theartist are actually working out intothe international marketplace. Andthen assuming that the music isdelivered in a timely fashion and thatthe artist is participating in the mar-keting of their album, I have to makesure that the local people are step-ping up to the plate and not missingthings."

Durgan also takes seriously histask of moving music around theworld. "Where Warner has reallypushed a lot of US repertoire, and forwhatever reason, you did not have alot of movement anywhere other thanfrom the US outwards-with a fewexceptions," he contends.

"I think it is a stepped process andthe thing we have to concentrate onfirst is driving the priorities, because

An executive committee has beenset up to vote on artist developmentpriorities. Durgan says that four orfive acts of this kind will be pickedeach year. The committee consists ofWMI regional presidents, Shrimpton,Ames and Durgan. "We sit down in aroom having listened to the music twoweeks prior to going in to it, and wego around and talk about it. Thenwe'll nominate or vote who does ordoes not go on the list. And againthere is a really simple check list thatthe record companies, the artists andthe affiliates must adhere to beforethey can make it on to the list.

"We also have the same kind of sys-tem for regional artist priorities andthat's what I like to refer to in [foot-ball] terms as the 1st division, 2nddivision, etc., and everyone is trying toget into the Premiership. But thething is we have organised leaguesand we are actively trying to makesure that they are all buzzing along."

Europe rocks as it rolls

With artists like K's Choice, Angelico,million seller Helmut Lotti and BellePerez releasing homegrown albums,radio programmers have a wide selec-tion of major releases from local tal-ent to fit into their formats this Fall.

K's Choice fourth album, AlmostHappy, is a major player, and willhave initial (pan-European) ship -outfigures of 120,000 units. "I expect toachieve gold status in Belgium onrelease date," says ChristopheTurcksin of Double T Music, now fullyowned by Sony Music. "The hype inBelgium might be less than abroad,but that's because we have new bands

like Arid claimingattention now."

PriorityHooverphonic's TheMagnificent Tree isanother priority forSony Music. "Theirpopularity comesfrom touring the U.S.(with BT) andEurope, and the fact that many tracksare used as scores on TV series andfilm scores," says Gino Moerman,local talent director at Sony Music inBelgium.

International releasesEMI Electrola in Cologne has itshands full with major internationalreleases from the likes of RobbieWilliams and Kylie -Minogue, butPUR, "the most successful Germanpop group", have already made a hugeimpact with Mittendrin. After its

release on September 11, the albumwent platinum with 450,000 copiessold in its first week of release, goingstraight to No.1 in the Germancharts.

Only one new Spanish release-Joaquin Sabina's BMG Ariola album19 Dias y 500 Noches-has sold morethan 500,000 units in Spain in thepast year, but at least two releasesduring the major Fall period are like-ly to break the barrier.

Singer and composer AlejandroSanz certainly will. Sanz's 1997Warner album Mcis broke just aboutevery record in the book, selling 2.1million units in Spain-nearly twicethe previous record by a Spanishartist-and some 4.5 million world-wide. His new album, El Alma AlAire, was released worldwide onSeptember 26 following weeks of pro-motion by Warner Spain. Journalistsand Warner executives were flown infrom across Europe for the launch ina Madrid museum, with listeningpoints available six hours in advancefor those who couldn't wait.

In the past two years,only one Spanish pop group has tri-umphed commercially. La Oreja deVan Gogh's debut Sony Epic album,Dile Al Sol, sold 700,000 units, andthe band's follow-up, El Viaje DeCopperpot, is likely to do just as well.It has the same light and simple for-mula, topped with the vocals of AmaiaMontero, the only female member.

The album title is based onChester Copperpot, a character in achildren's film by The Goonies, and isscheduled for late autumn release inItaly, Germany, and Latin America.

Saint's follow-up single Black Coffee. But head ofmusic at CHR station Radio 1 Oslo, ChristianJebsen, doesn't see cause for concern: "It's a greattune! The sound is quite similar to Pure Shores -and if you think about how big that was, you cansee that this one will be huge as well. It's moremelodic [than Pure Shores] and it's a nice track touse to break up the dance and trance that'saround at the moment." Black Coffee is producedby William Orbit, as was Pure Shores, and is thefirst single to be released off the band's secondalbum Saints & Sinners, due in the shops onOctober 16. Jebsen feels that All Saints havedeveloped since Never Ever in 1997. "All Saintsare doing the same as the Spice Girls," he says,"progressing in the way they present themselves.They're targeting an older age group with moregrown-up R&B rhythms-there's no more talk ofgirl power these days." driven by the morbid and bizarre, and havingbeen a big fan of Twin Peaks some ten years ago,Zetlitz' lyrics conjure up scenes from a horrorfilm, filled with killing and violence. Adore Me isthe first single from the EMI artist's secondalbum Beautiful So Far. Lines like"Bobbie'srunning naked through the woods again, or elsewe said your mother will be dead" is in starkcontrast to the lighthearted pop sound of thetrack. Producer Tore Johansson, who has workedwith The Cardigans, enhances the truly Nordicexperience, making Zetlitz sound like a crossbetween The Cardigan's Nina Persson and Bjork.The single goes to radio in the rest of Scandinaviathis autumn and the album, already out inNorway, is expected to be released early 2001.Adore Me went to press and radio in Denmark onSeptember 27. We have a new number one. Madonna's Music(Maverick) gives way to French duo Modjo's Lady(Hear Me Tonight) (Sound Of BarcItiy), whichreaches the summit after an 11 week hike. Not onlydoes the song fly off the shelves at record shops, butit's ruining dancefloors across the continent. DJs inthe UK, Germany, the Benelux countries, Scan-dinavia and Italy reach for the cut in droves.

Meanwhile, stand by for Madonna's follow-upsingle, What It Feels Like For A Girl (Maverick),which is hurtling towards the Dance Traxx chart.

Madison Avenue's Who The Hell Are You(Vicious Grooves), surges into the top ten in itsthird chart week. The track has just forced its wayinto the German dance chart, and is also afavourite among deejays in the UK, acrossScandinavia, and in the Czech Republic.

UK outfit Aurora feat. Naimee Coleman jumpsfrom 31 to 16 with their trancey cover of DuranDuran's Ordinary World (Positiva). In addition toentering the UK singles chart, the remake of the80s hit also enjoys support in Scandinavia andthe Benelux countries.

DJ Tomcraft's Silence (Kosmo/Kontor/Urban-Universal), makes an amazing jump from 62 to 20.So strong is support in its native Germany that itclimbs 42 positions on the basis of German clubplay and sales alone. Another high climber is ATBfeat. York's The Fields Of Love (Kontor/Urban-Universal), up to 23 from last week's 41, thanks tohelp from Germany and Belgium.

Kernkraft 400 by Zombie Nation has turned outto be a real slow burner. Emerging from DJ Hell'slabel Gigolo more than a year ago, the cut has sincebeen licensed to a succession of labels in Italy. Nowit has suddenly caught fire in the UK and Swedenand it rockets from 92 to 22 on the Dance Traxx.

This is a great week for Kylie Minogue. On ANight Like This (Parlophone) climbs to 21from 28 ont the European Radio Top 50, whileSpinning Around rests easy at 30 after 17weeks in the chart. But if that wasn't enough,a third Kylie track enters the chart this week.Kids (Chrysalis), the Aussie soap star's duetwith Robbie Williams and the second single tobe released from his current album SingWhen You're Winning, is new at 47. Music industry massive growthincreasing Internet digital piracy,disintermediation, and new entrantsbenefiting from lower barriers. Thestudy found that offline physicalsales will reach a peak by 2004-5,before being graduallytaken over by onlinedownloads.

Managing directorof media and newmedia at JP MorganNick Bertolotti tellsM&M: "We have hugeoptimism about thefuture of the industry.I think it is going togrow massively." Hecontinues: "The overallpot of money will grow.The real issue we haveto decide is how thatpot of money is goingto be split between thevarious incumbents.Major companies willstill stay big, stillmake lots of money,but will find them-selves under increas-ing pressure."

He adds that labelswill also face "pressureon yields," explaining:"The Internet enables different typesof content to be sampled on a bit -by -bit basis, a la carte. Instead of havingto buy a whole CD or a whole book ora whole newspaper, now you can buythe article or a track. When that hap-pens, are you going to be so willing topay the full price for the CD, thebook or the newspaper? These arethe key issues for us and that is whyit is so topical."

One of the key issues concerningthe future regards online piracy,with the threat posed by technologiessuch as MP3, file -sharing systems orintegrated CD-RWs. In the study, theanalysts consider that piracy willaffect back -catalogue material, whilefull -price front -list new releases "willbe more difficult to crack," as theywill be encrypted and watermarked.

Music industry consultant at JPMorgan, Nick Henry -Stolz, forecaststhat piracy will represent some 10-15% of total sales, but this shoulddecline after a peak in 2005-7, asmore and more protected front -listtracks become back -catalogue. "Todefend itself, the music industry canprotect its content, educate users,enforce its rights and provide con-sumers with a compelling offer," says

Ralf Blasberg, head of music atCHR station Radio FFH in Frankfurt,has playlisted Williams from thebeginning. To date, Sing WhenYou're Winning peaked at numbertwo in the M&M album chart and hassold two million units since itsrelease on August 28.

The Current single Rock DJ hasbeen one of William's biggest hits sofar, peaking at five in M&M'sEurochart with a controversial video-of which an edited version wasshown on most TV channels beforethe watershed-maximising publicity.

MTV's Hagman says: "We had somereaction to why it hadn't been playedin full in the daytime, but we don'tget many for showing the whole thingin the evening."

A Spanish version of the balladBetter Man will come out in LatinAmerica in the New Year and will bereleased with the English languageoriginal in Spain. "It's been an inte-grated part of the plan from thestart," continues Allen, revealingthat a Spanish version of Angels wasreleased in Latin America during theprevious campaign, but proved toolate to have an impact on albumsales. This time, the track has beencarefully selected and time has beenallocated for Williams to record Bet-ter Man in Spanish. The artist hasalso recorded a French version ofSupreme. "It's a market issue," addsAllen, "the French felt strongly aboutSupreme, just as Latin America feltstrongly about Better Man."

Robbie Williams is on tour in theUK in October and is expected toembark on a European jaunt in Feb-ruary next year.

The current and second single offthe album, a duet with KylieMinogue, Kids, will be followed byanother release in either Decemberor January, depending on how themarket unfolds. MTV's Hagman says:"It's nice to get a video like Kidswhich is good and which we can actu-ally play in the daytime! The video isamazing-so over-the-top-whichmakes it very funny. Of course it'sless of a headache than Rock DJ toprogramme."

Jean -Loup Tournier has becomethe first non-author/composer to beelected president of CISAC, theinternational confederation of rightssocieties. The election followed heateddebate between CISAC members, ashis candidacy required a change inCISAC statutes to accomodate a non-author/composer. Tournier retires aspresident of French society Sacem atthe beginning of next year.

Following the opening of a local office inGermany, Island/Def Jam plans to set up shopin 15-20 other territories, beginning with Japan,Russia, and Poland. The label, which will continueto be distributed by Universal in all territories,will maintain its own marketing, A&R, andpromotional staffs in each location.

Hotline hears that French rhythmic ACnetwork Europe 2, which has faced audienceproblems in recent months, is about to changeformat. Sources say a pop/rock format is amongthose being considered.

The UK's MOBO Awards, dedicated to blackmusic, will honour on October 4 in London LA Reid,the US music executive who took over the mantle atArista from Clive Davis just before summer.Expected to perform at the MOBOs are Sade, for herfirst live appearance in more than half a decade, andSenegalese artist Youssou N'Dour.

French independent commercial radio trade bodySIRTI has claimed that the NRJ Group would bein a dominant position if the acquisition of full -service station RMC is cleared by regulators. Theaccusations were rubbished by NRJ, calling themove "noisy and excessive-therefore laughable."

Staying with NRJ, Philippe Poustis, whojoined the company last year to be in charge of thegroup's label and its music downloading and onlinestrategy, has left NRJ to join the group Lagardere.

The BBC is adding five new national digitalradio services to the existing five stations alreadybroadcasting digitally. The move was welcomed byDigital One, the commercial operator of thenational commercial digital multiplex in the UK. Itschief executive Quentin Howard said he believedit would boost the digital radio market in the UK.

As previewed in M&M (Sept 23), digital musicprovider Music Choice has floated on the LondonStock Exchange, raising £50 million ( 83m) MusicChoice currently provides around 50 musicchannels to digital platforms across Europe. The£50m will be used to extend its service to mobilephones and to enhance its Internet and on -screenservices, including data, advertising and e -

commerce. The market capitalisation of thecompany will be around £196m.

The UK's Radio Academy Music Radio 2001conference will take place next year on April 3 ata new venue, The Peacock Theatre in London. Theseminar usually brings together the country'smain music and radio executives for a day ofseminars, debates and keynote speeches.

And finally, a piece of nostalgia. EMI Norwayhas initiated a Beatles -related contest in alliancewith daily newspaper Dagbladet and publicCHR/Alternative-Rock broadcaster NRK P3.Musicians are encouraged to record an inter-pretation of any Beatles -song (without samples andalterationsto the lyrics). EMI intends to release asingle with the three best takes. Each of the threewinners receives a book on The Beatles as well as a27 CD -single box set, while the top winner also getsto go to London's Abbey Road Studios.

The BRIT Awards 2001 will take place Feb 26 atLondon's Earl's Court 2 arena, Hotline hears. Theevent will be broadcast on the national ITV network.
