During the past year I was an Artist in Residence at the Robertson Wesley United Church in Edmonton. I lead a Spiritual Arts Collective, the theme of which was "Turning Toward Each Other: The Gift of Community." At our first meeting on of the women suggested doing something three dimensional and colourful. Other suggestions were involved learning the personal stories of homeless people in the community or photographing them. We left at the end of the first day with no clear plan but in the days that followed I began to think about how we could do something colourful and perhaps three dimensional that might or might not involve homeless people. I went to the internet to try to learn more about the church and the community. I discovered that the congregation at Robertson Wesley is engaged in a variety of activities and causes. One thing that caught my attention was an annual community festival. The Collective was initiated October 1, 2013. We soon had a

plan to "yarn bomb" the Oliver Community Festival on June 7, 2014. A first order of business for me was to learn to knit and crochet. There is a core group of enthusiastic participants who have begun knitting and crocheting the necessary inventory. News of the project has resulted in many additional volunteers, some of whom have renewed their interest in knitting through their involvement in the project. It has indeed resulted in community building and building friendships among participants that might never have occurred otherwise. The Collective met at the church on Sundays and Monday evenings, at a local restaurant on Wednesday afternoons and in a downtown law office during lunch hours. People came when it suited them and contributed what they could. Some people worked more or less independently and only occasionally meeting with a group. Individuals came forward to take responsibility for various yarn bombing installations. Interestingly, there was an attitude of collective ownership. No one person completed any single installation

The Collective was a serious project that quite apart from the actual yarn bombing. It brought together a broad spectrum of men and women with a common focus. It has had impact not only on creativity and knitting and crocheting skills, but has provided a personally meaningful experience and enriched social contact. Friendships were made or strengthened by participating in the project. People helped one another with knitting and crocheting and also with personal issues. Everyone benefitted and everyone was changed by the experience. As for me, I learned to knit and crochet. I plan to continue to do both. I recently moved to Gabriola Island and I am already scouting out potential sites for future yarn bombing.

Retreat Information: By Kim Caskey

Sharing the Artist’s Journey – Networking with growth in mind

The theme of the 2014 FAN retreat is ‘Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone’. For many of us, developing as an artist is a continuous series of steps outside our comfort zone. For our mingling times this retreat, the organizing committee is planning an activity that will allow us share our journeys on a one to one basis, and at the same time, help us answer our own questions about our art, art practices and creative approaches.

For example, there are many paths to being a successful artist. Some FAN members have travelled one path or another and might like to switch courses. Others are completely new to showing and selling their work, while we have some members with a ton of experience. Some members are advanced in using social media while others are newbies. This activity will give us a chance to find and connect with people who are on the path you want to be on.

You may want to step outside your comfort zone in with the challenge of establishing studio practices or creative disciplines within your workday. Finding a new technique, or adding to your expressive vocabulary may be your personal challenge. Again, you might look for someone whose work you admire in that area and exchange ideas and contacts.

When you arrive at retreat, come prepared to share your experience as an artist and to share your burning questions with other artists. This is networking with growth in mind!

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone – 2014 Artist Exchange

We all have “stuff” that makes us uncomfortable, things we find “hard” about making our art and announcing to the world (and each other) that we are artists. Hate orange? Have a skill set you haven’t quite mastered but wish to improve? Want to work daily and haven’t quite figured out how to eek out the time? Fear of failure? Or success? Choose something, step out of your comfort zone, and make it the focus of this year’s art exchange.

Like last year, this year’s exchange will be an 8 ½” x 11” journal page. Explore something that doesn’t sit easy with you. Hand in your art when you check in at retreat. Be prepared to talk about your work for 1-2 minutes. One lucky participant will get to take your art home. And you will get to take another artist’s work home with you to add to your collection and as a great remembrance of another fabulous FAN retreat!

Krista has always loved fibre. She attended her first quilting workshop in Clear Lake, Manitoba, facilitated by Eva Bishop, in the late 70s. Krista then completed her first quilt, all hand stitched, at age 23. After a long hiatus from quilting, to sew for her family, Krista returned to fibre art. Workshops with Coreen Zerr, Heather Lair, Karen Kay Buckley, Anna Hergert, Judy Coates-Perez and Angela Walters, all international quilt artists, as well as numerous vacations have influenced her art.

She also is involved in shearing, washing, carding,

dyeing and spinning wool with a local group called FLEECERS (Fibre Lovers Eagerly Engaging in Creating Essentials Regularly).

In 2014 Krista has been honoured for her fibre art landscape quilting endeavors with three awards. Sioux Narrows Triptych won first in the Mixed Media/Fabric Art Quilts section at Quilt Reflections sponsored by the Manitoba Prairie Quilters. Mesa Sentinel was selected for the Central Region Juried Show Tour and the Rural and Northern Art Show in Manitoba. Serengeti Moment, in collaboration with Coreen Zerr, was awarded first place for Original Design Realistic Pictorial

Wallquilts in the National Juried Show sponsored by the Canadian Quilters’ Association.

Terry's peaceful art studio nestles in her productive fruit and vegetable garden at the base of mossy bluffs. She is driven by curiosity and experimentation, trying to bridge the gap between painting and fibre art, hoping to express the west coast landscape in her unique way.

“Working with fabrics is the most challenging and satisfying way to create an image. I love exploring its boundaries; adding textural, sculptural, hand-dyed, hand-painted, and embellished elements. Nothing makes my day better, unless it is doing the same, with friends. I have been inspired by the breathtaking fibre art of Annemeike Mein, by the European Post-Impressionist artists, and by Canadian artists; the Group of Seven, Emily Carr, Tom Thompson, and Bruno Cote. I also paint in watercolour and experiment with oils and acrylics.

I hung my first art quilt in about 1992; a queen size image of the Grand Canyon! Yikes. Currently I am a member of the online Cyber Fibres Journal Group, meeting and presenting much smaller textile arts to one another since 2008. My work is hung every two years at the Quadra Island Quilt and Garden Tour. I sometimes open my studio during the Quadra Island Studio Tour in June, or by appointment at 250-285-3040 at any time.”

On the Road: Fibrescapes will be at the Retreat for members to see. If Vivian is driving to the Retreat she will transport it. If not,

Thelma will take it on the plane. Then it will be in Neepawa, MB for October 2014. After pricing out UPS and West Jet extra baggage I have decided to send it to Napanee by UPS. Thank you to Val Wilson for volunteering to transport on West Jet. Thank you to Pat Findlay has volunteered to deliver Fibrescapes from Winnipeg to Neepawa. Those services will not be needed due to cost of extra baggage. ‘Fibrescapes’ has potential booking at:

Surrey Art Council - we asked for Jan., Feb. or Mar. of 2015.

Barrhead AB - Gallery asked for April 2015 as an option. ‘Fibrescapes’ has been booked into The Old School House Arts Centre at Qualicum Beach from May 25-June 8th, 2015. It will hang in conjunction with the Mid Island Surface Design Group display, and during the same time period as the Parksville/Qualicum quilt show. Once again, we will be looking for transportation for the show to and from Qualicum around that time period. If you can help, let Marianne Parsons know. ([email protected])

Corinne James at The Old School House Arts Centre has suggested that any members wanting to run classes or do demos during the run of the show should contact her at [email protected]. And any publicity that we can do to promote the show(s) would be most welcome. Tell your friends!!!

Abstracted by the Fibre Art Network of Western Canada (2013-2016) By Vivian Kapusta Abstracted opened at the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum in Washington, USA in 2013. Abstracted was shown concurrently with the Canadian Quilt Association/ACC National Juried Show, in St. Catharines, Ontario, June 2014. In four days, we had over 1,500 visitors, not including those who returned with friends. The intent of our show is an exploration of how a representative theme can be explored in abstract. The show consists of 44 pieces by 40 artists, working in pairs. The first piece is realistic, the second an abstract based on the theme.

*Please note that all FAN members are welcomed and needed to volunteer for our shows.

Photos of visitors to the show: and this was when it was quiet enough for me to take photos!

The space was the entry to a theater and worked

very well. Great lighting and center benches for weary feet.

Note: The Abstracted show is available for galleries through 2016. Please contact show organizer Vivian Kapusta [email protected] Or Exhibits Coordinator Judy Leslie [email protected] Visit our website to see past exhibits and personal galleries of the artists. http://fibreartnetwork.com/ This is a fabulous show and needs more bookings! Currently, the bookings for 2015 are from July 1, through to the end of October. The guild in Victoria has been in contact for May 2015. How to do submit a proposal? Visit your local gallery, ask if you can speak to the curator and ask for the process in submitting a proposal. The website has documents you can use and you can obtain assistance from: Judy Leslie, Vivian Kapusta, Thelma Newbury. It is wise to contact Vivian to make sure you have the updated documents. It may help to have the documents printed off and in a package – in case you are able to drop it off. We know that galleries are more accepting of submissions from local residents of the area. Let us know how you do, we are keeping a list of contacts. Sometimes a gallery will decline at one time … but, accept at a later date. Good luck!

On the Wind Let’s get the word out for our latest show.

Fibre Art Network Newsletter Summer 2014 - Volume 17, Issue 6 Page 15

Food for Thought: By Thelma Newbury

As we approach the Retreat there are a number of things we should think about. One of these is the manning of “travelling shows” at CQA. When we commit to take a show to CQA we need to be cognisant of the fact that we need schedule members to oversee the show while the venue is open.

If our show is held within the main venue, having one person present per shift is acceptable.

If our show is in a separate venue (as was the case with “From Away” and “Abstracted”) we are able to charge an admission and that requires at least two people per shift. (CQA assigns the venue, and recommends an admission of $2.00.) The admission hopefully covers the costs (venue, pipe and drape, and shipping). Both of the above shows have shown a profit.

Hours of Operation are generally 10am to 5pm, with one day open to 8pm. That requires a lot of volunteer time.

The further away from our geographic region the conference is held at, the fewer members that attend. Attending members are often Judges, Teachers, Students or Vendors. This makes staffing the show difficult.

In Halifax Thelma and John manned the show with help from six FAN members. In St. Catherine’s Vivian and Tony manned with show with help from three FAN members (and Thelma’s friend Jean Edmunds from Dartmouth, NS).

The next CQA will be in Lethbridge, AB (the center of our region). FAN attendance should not present a problem. Getting a commitment of hours from members is essential.

Future locations may be much farther afield. We should be thinking of how we will handle this situation.

I believe in St. John’s we paid textile students to man the show. Making those arrangements probably takes time and a commitment from the CQA committee to schedule or recommend people. What do we need to do for the future?

Do you have a suggestion?

your imagination run wild as you create interesting and unusual interpretations of animals using unexpected or unconventional materials and adornment, and/or unusual techniques. Embrace the double meaning of “fabrications”, which refers both to our medium and to the fact that the animals do not have to be real. Artists should think outside the box and create works that push their limits. Both abstract and representational work is sought. Dimensional work that hangs from the wall will be accepted into this show, provided it meets the criteria listed in this prospectus. Freestanding work will not be considered for this exhibit.
