VOLUNTEERS UC ANR is aligning volunteer development requirements for all UC ANR programs statewide. Starting in 2017-18, volunteers in 4-H are required to complete between 1-3 hours of volunteer development courses annually which will be delivered online. Your UCCE 4-H Office will be sharing new enrollment procedures and training login information with you during the upcoming months, if they haven’t already. We hope you embrace this endeavor in the spirit in which it is intended: to instill a desire for life-long learning in youth. 4-H volunteers can best model life-long learning by continuing to gain new knowledge and insight themselves. Most importantly, 4-H volunteers should share their continuing education work with youth. Show them your certificates, talk about what you learned and how you hope to share that with them. In the coming months and years there will be many optional development opportunities for 4-H volunteers such as Club Leader Essentials, Chaperone training, Project Leader Essentials and much more.

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE TO PARTICIPATE 4-H volunteers from across the country will gain new ideas and learn together at the 2017 e-Forum. More information is available at www.4-h.org/volunteerprofessionals. Local 4-H sites are encouraged to register to be host locations for the e-Forum. Gather your 4-H volunteer colleagues for evenings of learning in central locations.

CALIFORNIA STATE 4-H FASHION REVUE 2018 The SFR committee is proud to announce the Challenge Categories and the Service Projects for 2018. The returning categories are Traditional, Upcycled, and Consumer Science Purchased - $40 limit.

The new categories for 2018 are: See It, Sew It Challenge: garment/outfit gets its inspiration from a picture of the garment itself, or someone wearing it in a magazine, a catalogue, from a website, or even a store display.

Retro/Vintage Challenge: garment/outfit gets its inspiration from a certain era of fashion and is sewn in the Clothing and Textile project.

The two SFR community service projects for 2018 are: Linus Blankets – provide new, handmade, washable blankets to be given as gifts to seriously ill and traumatized children. Ryan’s Case for Smiles - create and distribute whimsical cotton pillowcases that give children an emotional boost, helping kids with cancer and life-changing illnesses feel better to heal better.

UCCE - S H A S TA C O U N T Y P RO G R A M N E W S SHASTA COUNTY PROJECT PARTICIPATION

Now that the details associated with the 2017 Shasta District Fair are wrapping up I started to reflect on the number of youth touched by the fair through the market program as compared to the number of youth enrolled in 4-H. In 2017 over 460 youth exhibited and sold livestock at Shasta District Fair. Youth selling at this fair has trended up for the last four years. Figure A outlines the total number of lots sold at the fair since 2006. Figure A Number of Lots sold through Jr. Livestock Auction at Shasta District Fair

Youth can participate in this program as 4-H, FFA, Grange and Independent exhibitors. Figure B outlines the number of lots marketed by 4-H, FFA and Independent exhibitors locally (Grange exhibitors are not included as there were fewer than five each year).

Figure B. Number of Lots sold by Youth Organization (4-H, FFA and Independent).

To determine the percentage of youth participating in market animal projects in 2017, 4-H participants in the intermountain area (134) and primary members (cannot participate in market animal projects by policy) in the valley area (77) must be subtracted from the 2017 total number of youth participants in the program (681) leaving approximately 470 youth in the valley area who potentially could participate in market animal projects. When the number of market animal participants (263) is divided by the number of youth who could participate in market animal project, approximately 45 percent of participation in our club program DO NOT participate in market animal projects. These youth participate in a projects range from photography and quilting to shooting sports projects. By allowing the exhibition and marketing of poultry, rabbits, meat goats and bred heifers Shasta District Fair has become more inclusive and provides more opportunity for youth participation. We expect the number of 4-H youth participating in these projects to continue to increase. We also need to be mindful that while the market projects are important components of the 4-H Youth Development Program, as the population and demographics in the county change we need understanding the educational needs of local youth. In the fall of 2017 we will begin to recruit and hire a Youth Development Advisor for Shasta-Trinity-Tehama counties to help us develop strategies so we can continue to meet the needs of our local youth.
