I also want to offer congratulations to Dr. Bryon Roshong, who was installed as the Treasurer of the New Jersey Dental Association at the Garden State Dental Conference and Expo held in Long Branch last June. This election assures Dr. Roshong’s ascension to the office of President of the New Jersey Dental Association, in a few years. This is a great achievement and a testament to Dr. Roshong’s commitment to organized dentistry. Dr. Roshong is NJDA’s first officer from Bergen County in six years.

The Executive Council has been brainstorming these past few years for various ways to get more positive public relations for the Bergen County Dental Society. Once such idea was our alignment with the Footprints in the Sand Foundation. While this is a worthwhile cause, there has been further discussion focused on continuing this alignment and/or finding other charities to support.

Another idea that was brought forth which would directly increase member benefits, is the possible association with the Big Apple Dental Meeting, held each year in Mahwah - right here in Bergen County! The degree in which the BCDS would be involved is still being worked out.

If you have an opinion, we would love to hear from you. All of the Executive Council members and officers of the society work for your benefit and look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions. Many modes of contact are possible, in the event you cannot stop and chat during our social gathering prior to each monthly meeting. Women have special needs and considerations that men don’t have when it comes to oral health and dental care. Hormonal fluctuations affect more than a woman’s reproductive system. They have surprisingly strong influence on the oral cavity Theses changes are not necessarily the result of direct hormonal action on the tissues, but perhaps best explained as the effects of local fac-tors on tissues exacerbated by hormonal activity. Puberty, menses, pregnancy, and menopause all influence women’s oral health and may be seen as well in women taking oral contraceptives and menopause hormone therapy. Discussion will lend itself to these life cycle changes and their impact on the oral cavity Also presented are oral conditions that may occur in women who are

affected by eating disorders, as well as those who are victims of domestic violence. Course Objectives:The course participant will learn:1. To recognize oral manifestations and special dental-medical considerations when treating the female patient during

fluctuations in sex hormones occurring in puberty, menses, pregnancy, menopause and the use of oral contraceptives2. To incorporate the latest information regarding the impact of osteoporosis in the oral cavity as well as bisphosphonate

induced osteoporosis of the jawbone3. To recognize oral conditions prevalent in victims of domestic violence4. To recognize the effects of eating disorders on the oral cavity Barbara J. Steinberg received her DDS from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and completed a residency

at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She is Clinical Professor of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine.

Dr. Steinberg specializes in the treatment of medically compromised patients. She is a nationally and internationally in-

vited lecturer in the area of dental treatment of the medically compromised patient and women’s health, and has authored numerous articles and contributed to major textbooks on these subjects.

For the last eight years, Dr. Steinberg has been named by Dentistry Today “One of the Top Clinicians in Continuing

Education”. Dr. Steinberg is a former spokesperson for the American Dental Association on Women’s Oral Health Issues and has had numerous television appearances, including Good Morning America. She represented the American Dental Association at a congressional briefing on Women’s Oral Health Issues and presently serves on the Health, Nutrition and Fitness Board of women’s Day Magazine.
