From coming of age to international stage: British Orthodontic Society looks back on its history, looks forward to the 8th IOC

As the British Orthodontic Society prepares to host the 8th International Orthodontic Congress® in September 2015 in London, England, here is a look back on the history of the orthodontic specialty in the UK.

Youth and the accumulated knowledge of years are both characteristics of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), which will mark its 21st birthday next year, only eight years after celebrating its centenary.

How does the BOS manage to have a foot in the almost ancient and the modern? Because the first orthodontic society in the UK, the British Society for the Study of Orthodontia (BSSO), founded in 1907, lives on as a constituent part of the BOS, as do several other orthodontic societies.

Creating One Organization From FiveBy the early 1990s, five different orthodontic societies

existed in the UK. Each one had a different focus. Hospital consultants, university lecturers, hospital registrar trainees,

high-street specialists and community orthodontists were among the groups represented by the organizations.

Leading up to the 1990s, the societies discussed unification at various times. One of the imperatives for unification was political. The organizations needed to prepare for the funding challenges on the horizon. Quite apart from the strategic advantage of having a collective voice, the key to the survival of the specialty had to be high standards in all aspects of orthodontics for the benefit of patients.

British Orthodontic Society’s Against the Odds competition annually recognizes an inspiring patient’s triumph over great adversity during orthodontic treatmentPatients’ entries focus on their personal experiences, challenges and the support received during treatment

“IlikedDr.Adilbecausehewassopatientwithme.”This is how Emily Leng, 16, summed up why she and her

orthodontist, Dr. Adil Mannan, should win the 2013 Against the Odds competition. Established by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) in 2007, this competition recognizes an inspiring course of orthodontic treatment that was completed in the face of great challenge or adversity. OrmcoEurope has sponsored the competition since its inception.

Patients enter the contest, and Emily’s winning account of her treatment is a perfect illustration of a course of orthodontic treatment achieved against the odds. In her entry, Emily, who is deaf, described her anxiety about starting treatment. When she went to her first appointment with Dr. Mannan, she was accompanied by her mother and a signer. However, she was stillfrightened.“Ifounditupsetting, andIdidn’twanttohavemy teeth worked on. Then I was taken downstairs for an X-ray,

but didn’t want to stand near the machine,” she wrote in her entry. The next appointment was no better. Emily’s mother, the signer and the orthodontic team had to work hard to keep Emily calm.

Gradually, the practice won Emily’s trust by demonstrating visually what was going to happen. Dr. Mannan took an impression of his nurse’s teeth so Emily could see what it was like. Next, the dental nurse lay in a neighboring dental chair so Dr. Mannan could show how he would place and bond the brackets. But the turning point, according to Emily’s entry, was when Dr. Mannan learned some sign language. She wrote: “Fortherestofmyappointments, itmademefeelhappierthathe could say ‘hello’ and ‘how are you’ when I arrived each time.” Concluding her award-winning entry, Emily wrote: “WhenIgotmybracesremoved,Iwashappyandrelieved. I liked Dr. Adil because he was so patient with me.”

It was a great moment to be recognized through the competition, Dr. Mannan said. As a clinician, he felt equally proud of Emily’s treatment because it was a challenging case. She had a reverse overjet and an impacted canine, and she was adentalphobicpatient.“Atthestartoftreatment,therewasnoeyecontactatall,”Dr.Mannansaid.“Andwhenyoucan’thave a conversation with your patient, it is more difficult.”

Over time, they learned to communicate with each other through sign language, as well as by smiling and using the thumbs-upsigntoshoweverythingwasgoingwell.“Wetook the treatment step by step and could see her trust levels gradually improve,” Dr. Mannan said.

During the British Orthodontic Conference in September 2013, the BOS presented Dr. Mannan with a trophy, which he now displays in his office reception area. Emily has been given £750 worth of travel vouchers for her winning entry.

Each year, the competition judges include Prof. Tim Newton, a professor of psychology as applied to dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute. Prof. Newton has worked in

behavioral sciences in relation to dentistry for more than 20 years, and his particular interests include the management of dental anxiety, the working life of the dental team and patients’ perceptions of treatment. He is also an honorary member of the BOS.

“Forme, theAgainsttheOddscompetitionhasalways been about celebrating two things: the transformational change that orthodontics can bring about in individuals, often those who have struggled with other difficulties in their life, and the dedication, talent and professionalism of orthodontists and their teams,” Prof. Newton said.

“Allourjudgingisdoneanonymously—wedonotknowwho the nominated orthodontist is until we have made a decision on the winner. I have had the pleasure of working with several other judges. On almost every occasion there were heartfelt differences of opinion, which I found truly inspiring since it not only reflected the excellence of the submissions but also helped us to refine what exactly we meant by ‘Against the Odds.’

“Finally,Iwouldliketosaywhatajoyandaprivilegeithasbeen to hear patients’ stories firsthand from their submissions. For me, one of the greatest things about the competition is that it places the patient at the heart of our judging.”

Orthodontic patient Joanne Haines submitted the first winning entry for the British Orthodontic Society’s Against the Odds competition in 2007. Dr. Peter Huntley, her orthodontist, treated her with lingual orthodontics. While undergoing orthodontic treatment, she learned her husband had a malignant brain tumor. Despite this challenging situation, she persevered with her treatment, and Dr. Huntley completed her case three months before her husband died. Pictured here are her before- and after-treatment photos.

questioned whether orthodontic treatment should be provided free of charge under the British National Health Service (NHS). In the UK, the NHS is not only a system of health-care delivery but also an education provider, too. The removal of orthodontics from the NHS would have led to an upheaval. All the groups pulled together to produce a criticism of the report, and NHS orthodontic treatment was secured.

Orthodontists are adept at long-term planning, and a number of key people, such as Dr. John Williams, Dr. David DiBiase and Dr. Chris Kettler, pursued the cause. Unification was finally achieved in July 1994.

“Iwasdelighted(abouttheunification),”saidDr.Kettler,whowentontobecomethefirstsecretaryoftheBOS.“Fromthemoment I first became an orthodontist, it seemed a nonsense to have so many societies with many of us belonging to more than one.”

Moving Forward As OneSince the unification, the BOS has delivered on the vision

of its early advocates. The important developments of the last decades could not have been achieved without a strong and united profession, not least the society’s role next year as host of the 8th International Orthodontic Congress®.

“WealwayshadsomeinvolvementintheEuropean-widesocieties, but the UK’s participation on the international stage hasgrownexponentially,”Dr.Kettlersaid.“AllanThom,firsttreasurer for the newly unified BOS, has developed strong links on our behalf. Deservedly, he will become the first British president of the WFO in 2015.”

Meanwhile, the current chairman of the BOS, Prof. Nigel Hunt, highlights the society’s educational developments, including the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) created by a team of leading academics and consultants. The VLE standardizes orthodontic education nationally.

“Thecurriculumforteachingorthodonticshasbeen updated by the UK’s General Dental Council,” Prof. Hunt said. “Bydevelopingourownvirtuallearningenvironment, thesociety is making sure all postgraduates are taught the same modules and cover all aspects of the curriculum, ensuring standards are kept high.”

The revisions to the selection procedures for NHS orthodontic postgraduate training are another important change. The streamlined process is now run nationally by the London Postgraduate Deanery, which makes offers of training places more transparent and equitable, and less arduous for dental undergraduates.

“All130orsoapplicantswillmakeasingleapplication and will be able to state their dental school preferences,” Prof. Huntsaid.“Theywillhavesimilartestsandinterviews, andthenbe ranked from 1 to 130. The better you do in the selection process, the more likely you are to get your first choice of training center.”

More recently, the board of the BOS has restructured so it now comprises six directorates. The directorates contend with the key roles of the society, such as clinical practice, education,

research and clinical governance. The BOS is also a charity, which means it has a responsibility to make information available to patients. This fits neatly with the society’s vision for a more patient-centered role for the organization.

Paying Respect to HistoryThe BOS continues to honor its history. Every year, the

BSSO would hold the Northcroft Memorial Lecture, which was named in honor of Dr. George Northcroft, a founder of the BSSO. This important tradition has been subsumed into the BOS. In addition, the work of Dr. Northcroft, along with other significant books and artifacts tracking the evolution of orthodontic understanding in the UK, are now housed in the museum at the BOS headquarters. The large museum collection is almost entirely due to the dedication of the late Prof. James Moss, a WFO honorary member. Without his endeavors, all the early 20th-century plaster models collected by the BSSO might have been discarded. Prof. Chris Stephens and Dr. Iain Hathorn helped Prof. Moss establish the museum.

Without unification, so much of this collection might have been lost. Instead, a youthful BOS, comprising 1,900- plus members, can take pride in a valuable collection of memorabilia. It is emblematic of what was achieved 20 years ago in the formation of BOS, which embraces all spheres of the profession.

Today, the BOS is an authoritative voice on political, educational and scientific issues pertaining to the specialty of orthodontics.

“Therespectaffordedtothesocietygreatlyexceedsthatgiventothefoundingsocietiesseparately,”Dr.Kettlersaid.“TheBOS is the sole national representative of all orthodontists, and the first port of call for anything pertaining to the specialty.”

The Korean Association of Orthodontists (KAO) Foundation, which was founded in 2012, is furthering the KAO’s efforts to provide complimentary orthodontic treatment to underprivileged children in South Korea. The KAO has been offering this type of assistance since 2003.

The KAO Foundation’s Charity Orthodontic Project for Adolescents aims to provide orthodontic treatment to 180 adolescents this year. Those adolescents chosen for treatment are exempt from payment. At this time, the program does not have a waiting list, and patients are selected on a yearly basis.

Approximately 200 KAO-member orthodontists participate in the Charity Orthodontic Project for Adolescents. The KAO recognizes these members at its annual meeting and gives them

a certificate of appreciation. “TheprimarygoalsoftheFoundationaretoprovide

orthodontic care for adolescents in need and to support research on malocclusion, but it also provides education and information on orthodontic treatment to the public,” said Dr.Chung-JuHwang,presidentoftheKAO.“TheFoundation has increased its help to adolescents, and, in 2013, more than 150 children received treatment through the program.”

As part of its public and community outreach efforts, the KAO Foundation promotes orthodontic care on Baruni Day. “BarunistandsforstraightteethinKoreanandalsorepresentsthe charity group founded by the KAO,” Dr. Hwang said. Baruni Day will be held May 25, 2014.

Founded in 1965 in Beirut, Lebanon, the Lebanese Orthodontic Society (LOS) is considered to be one of the oldest dental scientific societies in the Middle East. Today, the LOS is a member of the Arab Orthodontic Society, a corresponding member of the European Federation of Orthodontics and an affiliate organization of the WFO. The LOS currently has 152 affiliated members who are orthodontic specialists and practice orthodontics exclusively. The LOS contributes to the development and progress of orthodontics in Lebanon through the organization of one main meeting per year, as well as many seminars.

Four orthodontists were instrumental in the founding of the LOS: Drs. Pierre Riscallah, Edgard Debbaneh, Frédéric Maalouf and Alexandre Khoury. Dr. Riscallah was elected as president in 1965 and remained in that position until 1999. He continued to serve as honorary president until his death in 2010. Dr. Riscallah was the founder of the

Department of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry at Saint Joseph University in Beirut. He served as the head of this department from 1959 to 1980. The organization’s activities, however, were interrupted

during Lebanon’s civil war and political upheaval from 1975 to 1993. In 1993, the LOS resumed its activities, and Dr. Riscallah began organizing scientific meetings once again. Working closely with the Lebanese universities, the LOS supports the development of the specialty in Lebanon by furthering the continuing-education of its members and by encouraging the development of scientific research in orthodontics.

In October 2001, the LOS hosted the 5th Arab Orthodontic Meeting in Beirut, during which the first directory of Arab orthodontists was released. In February 2002, a scientific agreement between the Société Française d'Orthopédie Dento-Faciale (SFODF) and the LOS was signed in Beirut. The LOS also hosted the first meeting of French-speaking orthodontists in Beirut in February 2005. Most recently, Beirut was the site of the 11th Arab Orthodontic Meeting and 12th Lebanese Orthodontic Congress in November 2013.

Since 1993, several renowned orthodontists have participated in LOS meetings and seminars, including Drs. Robert Garcia, Francis Bassigny, André Horn, Claude Lemasson, Jacques Faure,

Hugo De Clerck, Claude Chabre, Jean-Jacques Aknin, Pierre Planché, Thierry De Coster, Luc Dermaut, Olivier Sorel, Jacques Treil, Olivier Mauchamp, Timo Peltomäki, Hans-Peter Bantleon, Hans Paulsen, Haluk Iseri, Dieter Drescher, Robert Ricketts, Asbjörn Hasund, Herman Van Beek, Brian Preston, Leslie Will, Roberto Justus, Moschos Papadopoulos, Athanasios Athanasiou, Rainer-Reginald Miethke, Vittorio Cacciafesta, Hugo Trevisi, Emile Rossouw, Sunil Kapila, Ravindra Nanda, Hee-Moon Kyung, Paul-Georg Brinkmann and Martin Palomo.

Since becoming a WFO affiliate organization in 1998, the LOS encourages its members to join the WFO as WFO membership offers access to the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists and reduced rates for international meetings, among other benefits. Today, 42 LOS members are WFO fellows.

“AsthenewlyelectedLOSpresident, myobjectivesaretoencourage all LOS members to become WFO fellows and to attend the 8th International Orthodontic Congress® in London, as well as to push for establishing an Arab orthodontic certifying board and to organize a special congress in Beirut in 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the LOS,” Dr. Fidel Nabbout said. Dr. Nabbout is in private practice in Lebanon and Kuwait, and is affiliated with the Lebanese University as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics.

Dr. Zouhair Skaf, historian of the Lebanese Orthodontic Society, and Dr. Fidel Nabbout, president of the LOS, contributed to this article.

WFO affiliate organizations can help further the growth of the WFO by publicizing the WFO membership application process. WFO affiliate organizations may link their websites to the WFO website, www.wfo.org, to promote WFO membership and easy access to WFO membership applications.

The WFO website features membership applications for fellows, academic members, student members and retired members. All applications can be accessed through this WFO Web page: http://www.wfo.org/membership/application-forms-and-membership-classifications/. This Web page also provides details on each membership classification.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has announced thatDr.Rolf“Buzz”Behrents,a WFO fellow, will be the next editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) as of June 1, 2014. Currently, Dr. Behrents is transitioning into the position by

working with Dr. David Turpin, interim editor-in-chief of the journal and a member of the WFO Executive Committee.

The AAO began the search process for a new AJO-DO editor-in-chief last September following the death of Dr. Vincent G. Kokich Sr. in July 2013. Dr. Kokich had been editor-in-chief of the AJO-DO since 2010 and was an honorary member of the WFO.

“Buzzhasshownanenthusiasmforthenewopportunity to learn, and it is my belief that he will thrive on the increasing challenge of being the editor-in-chief of a major orthodontic journal,” Dr. Turpin said.

Dr. Behrents is the Lysle E. Johnston, Jr. Professor of Orthodontics and director of the orthodontic program at the Saint Louis University (SLU) Center for Advanced Dental Education (CADE) in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Dr. Behrents was also executive director of the SLU CADE from 2003 to 2011.

A past guest editor and referee for the AJO-DO, Dr. Behrents’ extensive editorial experience includes work as an editorial board member for The Angle Orthodontist and as a referee for the World Journal of Orthodontics, the Journal of Orthodontics (United Kingdom), the Journal of Dental Research, Quintessence International, Medical Principles and Practice (Kuwait), Mondo Ortodontico (Brazil) and others.

An active researcher and editorial contributor to numerous books, Dr. Behrents is the author of Growth of the Aging Craniofacial Skeleton. Material from this monograph is included in the textbook Contemporary Orthodontics by Dr. William Proffit and in additional textbooks published in

several languages. Dr. Behrents has published more than 70 articles in refereed journals, including the AJO-DO, The Angle Orthodontist, the Journal of General Dentistry, and the Annals of Human Biology. Dr. Behrents has been a research associate of the Bolton-Brush Growth Study Center of Case Western Reserve University since 1984.

“Theappointmentmeansagreatdealtome,”Dr.Behrentssaid.“Onapersonalbasis,thisappointmentrepresentsa capstone on a reasonably productive academic career. It seems that all the experiences that have come before have prepared me for the responsibility to come. But, along with the honor of being appointed, comes greater responsibility. It shall be a great adventure and great opportunity to serve the specialty.

“Inthiseffort,Iwillstandontheshouldersofthosewhohave come before me as editor-in-chief. Notable to my appoint-ment is Dr. Vince Kokich. He was the consummate teacher. His knowledge, experience and skill were obvious to all, but he also had a presence and style that was admired and respected. He was an uncommon person, and he will be missed a great deal. But what he had done for the specialty and the journal will live on in many ways. Much of what he has added to the journal will be retained and advanced as opportunity presents.

“Ofcourse,IamalsogreatlyinthedebtofDr.DavidTurpinfor his work as editor-in-chief preceding Dr. Kokich. His tenure is acknowledged as a period of great achievement, particularly in the case of evidence-based orthodontics. Since Dr. Kokich’s passing, he has maintained the quality of the journal, and he has also been so kind as to show me the way as I begin to take on new tasks and develop opportunities ahead.”

Dr. Behrents expects much of the journal to remain the same in the near term, and he is looking forward to celebrating ananniversarymilestonenextyear.“Wewillpauseforreflectionon the past and the future as the 100th anniversary of the AJO-DO iscelebratedin2015,”hesaid.“Beyondthatyearlongevent,I am sure that there will be more that develops as the journal enters its second century of relevance and importance to the specialty of orthodontics.”

Prof. Nigel Hunt, chairman of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), has been appointed to serve as dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England as of June 2014. Prof. Hunt will serve as president of the BOS in 2015. The WFO will bestow honorary membership upon Prof. Hunt during the 8th International Orthodontic Congress® in September 2015.

The Indian Orthodontic Society (IOS) recently held Ortho Surge 2014, its first major conference of the year. The Bombay Orthodontic Study Group (BOSG), the first constituent group of the IOS, hosted the two-day event that was held Jan. 27-28. More than 200 delegates from all over the country and the Middle East attended the event.

Dr. Roberto Justus, president of the WFO, was the invited speaker. He discussed orthodontic and orthopedic treatments based on biologic principles, as well as mechanics and retention protocol.

During the conference’s welcome reception, Dr. Nikhilesh Vaid, organizing chairman of the conference and president-elect of the IOS, welcomed all the attendees. In addition to Dr. Justus and his wife, Dr. Yolanda Justus, other guests of honor included Dr. Joseph Varghese, president of the IOS; Dr. A.V. Arun, secretary of the IOS; and Dr. Amish Mehta, vice president of the IOS. Plaques of appreciation were presented to the IOS and BOSG dignitaries in recognition of their contributions to the conference.

The final day of the conference featured the first “Clinical Innovations Summit" in the history of the IOS. During the summit, 20 orthodontists from various parts of the country showcased their innovations. The event scientific committee, headed by Dr. Nikhil Vashi, the scientific convener and innovator, carefully selected

these individuals after evaluating the authenticity and usefulness of their innovations in clinical orthodontics.

“The delegates, as well as Dr. Justus, were impressed with these young innovative minds in the IOS who chose ‘the path not taken’ and were willing to think ‘outside of the box’ to come up with really useful and relevant clinical innovations, which can contribute positively to the science of orthodontics.” Dr. Vaid said. “Most of these ideas have now been published in peer-reviewed international journals.”

The Saudi Orthodontic Society (SOS) held its 8th Annual Meeting Jan. 27-30, 2014, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Smalley (United States), Dr. Antonino Secchi (United States), Dr. L. Douglas Knight (United States) and Dr. Eric Kuo (United States). The meeting drew more than 600 attendees. In addition, Dr. Khalid Albadr, president of the SOS, presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Suliman Aiemran, past president of the SOS.

The SOS will hold its 9th International Annual Congress Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2015, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The SOS website is www.sos.sa.

Dr. Thomas Ahman, a WFO Executive Committee member since 2010, will receive the 2014 James E. Brophy AAO Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) on April 27, 2014, during the Excellence in Orthodontics Awards Ceremony that

will be held in conjunction with the AAO Annual Session in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Dr. Ahman, who has been in private orthodontic practice in Lima, Ohio, USA, for 28 years, has held numerous leadership positions within the AAO. Most notably, he was highly involved with the AAO’s House of Delegates, which is the organization’s policy-making body that convenes during the AAO Annual Session. For seven years, he represented the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists (GLAO) as a delegate to the House of Delegates. For three of those years, he served as the GLAO’s delegation chair. Dr. Ahman then went on to serve as the speaker of the House of Delegates for three years. In this

capacity, he guided the House of Delegates as it elected officers, adopted the annual budget and voted on policies. In addition to those roles, Dr. Ahman served on the AAO Council on Membership, Ethics and Judicial Concerns for eight years, serving as chair for two years. He has been involved with several other committees over the years.

“Dr.Ahmanisoneofthenicestpeopleinorthodonticsand deserves this award,” said Dr. Terry Pracht, the immediate pastchairoftheawardselectioncommittee.“Wehaveworkedtogether for many years, and he was general chair of the 2005 Annual Session when I was AAO president.”

Dr. Ahman’s involvement in organized orthodontics has not been limited to the AAO. He is a past president of the GLAO and served as the GLAO parliamentarian for three years. He is also a past president of the Northwestern Ohio Dental Association and served on several of the organization’s committees. He was also a delegate to the Ohio Dental Association’s House of Delegates for three years. Dr. Ahman is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has

served as an ABO examiner as well.“BeingselectedtoreceivetheBrophyAwardistrulyan

honoranddefinitelyasurprise,”Dr.Ahmansaid.“Inow realize the Brophy Award is not an award that someone sets out to achieve based on what they have personally done. It is bestowed on the person who is lucky enough to get the opportunity to work with the finest, hard-working, dedicated and talented people the AAO has to offer. This includes working with fellow orthodontists, AAO leadership and staff, constituent leadership and staff, and our AAO members who entrust us with the authority to work on their behalf. I, by the grace of God, am one of those lucky people. Without question, my personal and professional life has been enhanced beyond measure by my involvement with the GLAO, the AAO, and now the WFO. I am a much better orthodontist than I would have ever been because of my involvement in organized orthodontics. I encourage every orthodontist, especially younger orthodontists, to take any opportunity to get involved. I promise you the people you meet and the rewards you reap will far outweigh the responsibilities you accept.”
