Welcome back! I hope that all of our Stangel

families had a wonderful winter break! I am sure that

most of you were ready to send your little (and big)

Stars back to school today!

With the New Year as a fresh start, we will be

trying out a new approach in the lunch room. We have

been having some ongoing issues with food throwing,

disrespect for staff, and volume. It is certainly not all

students and it is not every day. It is more of an issue

with our second lunch for grades 4-6. It is our goal to

have a positive and social atmosphere in the lunch room

every day!

Starting today there will be posters (one for

each lunch) up in the lunch room that look like stop

signs. Each day that students end their lunch period

on green—which represents talking at a reasonable

volume with friends and being respectful to the school

and staff while eating—they will be able to choose

who they sit with the following day. We hope that will

be every day. As needed, we will move the marker on

the stop sign to yellow or red to let students know that

their volume or respectfulness has become an issue;

they should make an adjustment. The marker will

move back to green once they have made the needed

adjustment. If students choose to end their lunch

period on yellow or red they will be sitting with their

class the following day in an assigned order. Each day

students get a fresh start!

We are working on being respectful and

responsible at Stangel. We appreciate your support at

home. If you have any questions about this, please

don’t hesitate to contact me!

Teaching Compassion

January Guidance Class Lessons

1st & 2nd Grade: will be learning about self-

control and how to calm down when faced with

strong emotions.

4th & 5th Grade: will be beginning the Life

Skills curriculum. They will be learning about

making positive choices and how to recognize

tricks in advertising.

6th Grade: will be presenting their career

projects and registering for junior high school

courses.

Please check your child’s Friday Folders weekly

for more information on these topics as well as

activities to help you practice these skills with

your child.

Teaching your child empathy and compassion is one of the best ways to prevent verbal, physical, and emotional aggression in your home, our school, and our community. During Guidance class, your child has learned that empathy means understanding how others are feeling and compassion is empathy in action (what kind things can you say or do to help someone). As parents/guardians, there are many ways you can teach kindness to your child at home.

Talk about Feelings. Take the time to tell your child how you feel about their actions and how others treat you. Also, encourage your child to talk about how they feel.

Walk the Talk. Children learn from your actions. When you have a chance to practice random acts of compassion, do so!

I am here to support you in helping your child be successful. Please feel free to contact me!

Volunteer Your Time. You can encourage your

child to donate a toy he/she has outgrown to the

annual toy drive. He/she can also help you make

cookies for a shelter and come with you when you

visit someone in the hospital or nursing home.

Don't let rudeness pass. You might say, "Wow, that cashier must have had a really bad day to talk in such a mean voice to us at the supermarket. What do you think?" This teaches your child that when someone is nasty to you, you don't have to be mean in response.

Acknowledge Kindness. Be sure to show your child that you notice when someone is doing something nice. Likewise, if your child treats someone nicely, be sure to acknowledge and praise his/her effort.

STAR Teams Update In December, the Stangel students were excited to rejoin their STAR Teams for another lesson about Cooperation. Our small groups of 1st graders through 6th graders worked together to create unique snowflakes to decorate for the Winter Concert. We hope you enjoyed our art. It was a team effort! STAR Teams will meet again on January 23, 2015. We will be doing activities

on the topic of Compassion.

6th Grade and 1st grade students show off the snowflakes they made together in

their STAR Teams.

January General Music News

Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Sixth Grade

First and Second Grade Students listened to music from the Nutcracker Ballet. They identified the following parts in the music: *High/Low Sounds *Loud/Quiet Sounds *Fast/Slow Tempo *Form – How music is put together. They danced, created their own movement and played instruments. In January first and second graders will begin identifying instruments of the orchestra. First graders will listen to “Peter and the Wolf”. Second graders will listen to “Peer Gynt Suite”

Third Grade Third grade began playing the xylophones. They learned to play a low bass part while another line of melody was being played. In January third graders will be listening to “Carnival of the Animals” and learning about how musicians make compositional

choices to reflect a story line or character.

Fifth Grade Fifth grade students will be working on rhythm in January. They will be composing rhythm compositions to reflect a “New Year Resolution”. They will choose which rhythm instrument they will use to play their composition and perform it for their class.

Sixth Grade Sixth grade students will focus on learning tablature on guitar. This is how you play one note at a time instead of just playing a chord. The guitars will then travel to another school and the world drumming unit will begin.

Thank you to all of the families and friends that came to the Winter Concert. It was nice to have so many people here to help us celebrate our success as musicians!

Fourth Grade In January, fourth grade students will be focusing on expanding their knowledge of soprano recorder notes. They will also learn how to use the recorder to play a descant while another group sings a

melody.

Art News From Mrs. Ruchalski The first grade has been learning about animal habitats and

how they can be made into art. They will be finishing up their owl house paintings

and moving into a Wisconsin weather project. Based on the book Under the Snow,

the first graders will make an interactive collage.

The second grade will be starting a paper weaving project exploring learning the

artistic works of Piet Mondrian.

Third grade will be finishing their Kimmy Cantrell clay projects. After that they will

be exploring the artwork of the Australian culture!

Fourth grade will be looking at the works of chuck close to create circle weavings.

These will create a larger mural image.

Fifth grade will finish working on their large clay projects! They are learning how to

use slabs of clay to create a functional art piece. They will then learn how to design a

billboard for the Youth Art Month.

Sixth grade has their paper sculptures up on display by the library. They will be

moving into working on motivational printmaking.

We had an exciting 5th Grade DARE Graduation in November! The students had a chance to celebrate their learning and commitment to living a healthy life. Kate Nolden, Lia Haile, and Elana Damian did a great job representing Stangel by reading their DARE essays during the ceremony!

Happy New Year, I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season. It’s that time of the year when you might be considering a resolution. I encourage and challenge your entire family to make exercise a priority starting NOW. Exercise does not have to be an excruciating endeavor either. Unfortunately, many think there is a connection between exercise and pain, discomfort, and soreness. Often this comes from the perception based on advertisements where we see athletes working so hard their eyeballs are sweating. Such intense workouts are done only by a very small percentage. Building a healthier you does mean stimulating and challenging your body just outside of your comfort zone. This does not mean being too aggressive! The “no pain, no gain” analogy couldn’t be further from the truth. Over stimulating can lead to an unpleasant experience because of too much soreness or an injury that thwarts us from exercising again. Also, exercise should not be dull. As we grow older we often lose the connection between fun and movement. There is something for everyone and it should be fun (e.g. dancing, boxing, walking, biking, strength training, swimming, team & individual sports, etc.) Moreover, exercise does not need to be a formal activity, it does not require a huge chunk of time carved out of your day. The goal is to get a total of 60 minutes a day. It does not mean 60 consecutive minutes, it can be in smaller intervals that equal a total of 60 for the day.

Suggestions & reminders for exercise: Be realistic - It takes time and it doesn’t happen overnight

Make it fun - Find something you enjoy

Don’t overdo it - Start low and gradually progress

Make time – It is important to budget your time and plan ahead

Talk test - Be able to talk w/phrases, not sentences = too chatty & not working enough

Energy test – if you feel tired an hour or later of exercising you probably overdid it

Something is better than nothing – 60 minutes is ideal, but 20 minutes can get the job done.

Lastly, back in October I missed 2 weeks of school because of a herniated disc/pinched nerve. The ailment has not improved how I would have liked so I opted to have a minor surgical procedure December 16. I will be out of school until mid-January to recover appropriately. My New Year’s Resolution is to get back to exercising like I did prior to my back issue in August.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you don’t stop.” Confucius

Stay Active,

Mr. Ullman
