Dear Parent/Carer, As I was writing this we received the call from Ofsted’s Kevin Flanigan (HMI) to announce our forthcoming Ofsted inspection tomorrow 3 rd December till Wednesday 4 th December. Today your child will have received the letter with all the information, please also see the attached. We would be grateful for as many parents and carers to complete the Parent View questionnaire so that Ofsted can hear your views on Bolingbroke Academy. In other news I’m delighted to announce our year 7 and 8 Maths Challenge team won the ARK School’s trophy last Friday. This competition celebrates the exceptional mathematical aptitude of our pupils through mental maths, problem solving and quick fire response rounds. Congratulations go to Alexa Scutt -Thomson , Sufyan Khan, Charlie Venes, Amira Zanabi and Tristan Seguin and a special thank you to Ms Donaldson for preparing the team and giving the pupils such a wonderful opportunity. Next week all our pupils commence their Autumn 2 assessments. Your child will take an assessment in every subject to assess their knowledge and understanding from this half term. These assessments provide teachers with the opportunity to see how well your child progressed this half term. The reason the as- sessment are held in the penultimate week of term is so any gaps in knowledge will be retaught in the final week of term. On the last day of term we will celebrate pupils’ achievements in our final assembly on Fri- day 20 th December. In the last week of term we will host our second Christmas Concert by Candlelight. Rehearsals are underway and pupils are practising hard to show off their musical progress this term. I know we are in for a real treat. Unlike last year we will be selling tickets at our Christmas Shop (see below) as numbers are restricted due to the high number of pupils involved. We hope many of you will be able to join us for the event and enjoy a mince pie and glass of mulled wine. Warmest regards, Ms Edis Principal Courageous Hound Volume. 2 Issue. 6 Monday 2nd December 2013 Bolingbroke Academy is proud to be green. ARK MATHMATICS CHALLENGE

By Ms Donaldson

Whilst the rest of school were enjoying their lie-ins on Friday morning, five of our pupils travelled up to Wembley to

compete in the Year 8 Maths Challenge competition. Returning team members Alexa Scutt-Thomson and Sufyan

Khan were joined by Charlie Venes, Amira Zanabi and brave year 7 Tristan Seguin. The day consisted of four rounds,

each with a slightly different focus. In the 'swimming round', pupils had to work on problems around the room,

getting all of the answers in the right order. The team caused Miss Donaldson a few grey hairs by handing their

answers in 10 minutes early! Sufyan Khan then excelled himself by coming second in the individual 'boxing' round,

where pupils answered quick fire questions to try to be the last one standing. These two rounds were followed by a

'marathon' round of long questions and finally a team relay. The Bolingbroke team faced stiff competition from

Walworth and Charter Academies throughout the contest, eventually winning by a single point! Their enthusiasm

and teamwork were exceptional, which was commented upon by the Ark staff running the event. They've set a very

high bar for next year's team!

WANDSWORTH TAKEOVER DAY By Ms Kelly

On Friday 22nd November nine Bolingbroke pupils attended Wandsworth Takeover Day - an opportunity

for young people in Wandsworth to shadow councillors at the town hall and become decision makers for

the day. Pupils chose their specialist area in advance and were paired up with a councillor on the day who

worked in areas such as education, housing, health and police. Tyler Mensah, year 7, shadowed Stewart

Low and Wandsworth police officers. Tyler watched live CCTV of Clapham Junction and helped to spot

two petty crimes taking place. He also contributed to a meeting about how to prevent skateboarders

making trouble on local estates. He said, “It was a great day because I got to see that every day the

community is being kept safe which is an extremely difficult job”. Isi Leather, year 8, shadowed a councillor

for public health and chaired a meeting about young people using social media and how the health service

could use this knowledge. Isi said, 'I had lots of fun and recommend this event to anyone who is interested

in finding out what goes on behind the scenes and how Wandsworth is run. I loved teaching adults about

social media - something they didn't know very much about!' Some of the pupils were also lucky enough to

meet Wandsworth Mayor, Angela Graham, who was impressed by the pupils' hard work and maturity in

taking on real jobs affecting real people.

SPORTS UPDATE

By Mr Kerby

Bolingbroke 9-0 Ark Putney

Mr Kerby’s year 8 Greyhounds sent a powerful message to competing schools this week, with an

emphatic demolition of Ark Putney. After an unfortunate result against Southfields, Bolingbroke were

keen to bounce back as readily as possible. With the return of Luke Hedges and Nick Whyte,

Bolingbroke drew upon a much more in-depth squad, although late illnesses and withdrawals forced a

last minute reshuffle. With traffic congestion around the ground, Ark Putney arrived late, forcing

kick-off back by 40 minutes. With light rapidly fading, Kerby’s men knew that they would have to adopt

a siege mentality in order to make the most of what could potentially be quite treacherous conditions.

Bolingbroke sought to build on last week’s EBI’s, adopting a tighter defensive line and wider outlets to

control possession. A completely dominant display was epitomised from front to back, a new centre-

half pairing of Wheeler and Riley linking nicely with the central trio of Hedges, Brown and Siddle.

Despite heavy conditions, the passing philosophy was once again visible for all to see, as the boys in

blue built pressure in the final third. The honed and measured possession was rewarded shortly after,

with the back of the net bulging repeatedly to the delight of the assembled crowd of pupils and

parents.

Entrenched in their own final third, Putney were struggling for attacking outlets, to the benefit of Joe

Benbow and Mikey Wilson. Both full backs taking advantage of the readily available overlapping space

were able to create numerous chances. In what became a 9-0 romp, the pick of the bunch came from a

somewhat unlikely source. A crossfield ball from the left skipped up off the turf and into the path of

the advancing Mikey Wilson, who smashed his effort into the back of the net with a scorching half

volley. Braces from Andrew Miller (2), Louis Jenkin (2) two penalties from Luke Hedges, a superb

effort from Harry Siddle, and the standout goal from Wilson completed the rout.

Next up for Bolingbroke is a tricky tie against Battersea park, with Mr Kerby keen to add to the bulg-

ing fixture list before the Christmas Break.
