Members Profile - Marilyn and Jim Hlaca 1968 Camero Sports Coupe

    Story by Marilyn Hlaca

My story begins in late 1967 when I went with my father to pick up his new 1968 Chevy Caprice from Pappas Chevrolet in South Kansas City, Missouri.  On the showroom floor I recall seeing a new Camaro convertible that Dad said "NO" to. However, he would help me with the purchase of a hardtop.

We picked up some brochures and returned later in the week to purchase the car I own today.  We went with the Camaro Sport Coupe, 8-cylinder 327ci, with the following factory options:

    • Seat and shoulder belts • Tinted glass for all windows • Floor mats • Vinyl roof • Air conditioning • Console• Power brakes • Power steering • Power-glide automatic transmission • AM push-button radio • Rear seat speaker

It also included a Rally Sport Package comprised of the following:• Special grill • Headlight covers • Parking lights • Lower body side moldings • Back up lights • RS emblems on grille, fenders and fuel-

    filler cap

There were at least 19 color choices and I went with "Ash Gold"  The base price was $2,670.00 and with the above options another $955.00.  I married Jim in April 1973 and we continued to drive the car daily until 1980. At which time it was garaged with 72k miles. Until 2008 it was occasionally started up to drive around the block.

In 2008 we found an excellent mechanic that agreed to restore the car, by rebuilding the engine, transmission, brakes etc., in his spare time.  Three years later it was ready for paint.

We had it repainted in the original "Ash Gold” color.  The Interior is in excellent shape for its age and has not been restored.   The Camaro has been back with us for two years now and I haven't yet driven it, though Jim allows me to sit in the passenger seat.

Inauguration of a New Column - “Readin’, Writin’ and Wrenchin’ ” Enjoy the expertise and humor of one of our chapter’s founding members! Watch for his column!

    Why and How?

    • Why can’t Connie Lanam find her toothpaste?

    • How did Jon Cooper’s 69Z28 get the title - Deluxe Chic Magnet?

    • Ask Bob Wallis how much happier he is on the dark side. How often does go there?

    • As an AACA member owning many classics and new cars . . . deep snow hits our area . . . what do you do? Call for a rental car!

    • Who cleans bugs out of a radiator with the post of their earring?

    • Who was checking their blinker fluid? “What happens in Lincoln . . . stays in Lincoln!”

    • Tune-ups can be dangerous when the horsepower is restored to a ’70 Z28 . . . ?

    • What is the sound from Detroit? Ask Ken R . . .?

    The Answers Later . . .

Readin’ Writin’ and Wrenchin’By Ken Lee

✓  When replacing spark plugs, be sure to check for the proper gap.  Out of the box…they are never right for your application.

✓For maximum cooling in summer, use straight water.  Antifreeze is not a good coolant. Never ever use more than 50/50 mix.

✓Use straight distilled water with an anti-rust inhibitor.  In the fall go back to a 50/50 blend for anti-freezing.

✓Ethanol showed its disaster qualities again…double duty in Lincoln. ✓Why is painting a car called a “paint job”?  It’s not a “engine job” or a “tire job”…..but, it’s a “paint job”.

    Why?

✓Driving in this heat, be sure you have “higher” psi in your tires for cooler operation.

Jon Cooper partnered with Jessica Winne, a leader within SALC, to schedule a classic car display for the special needs young adults (also known as Learners) on Tuesday, June 3rd, 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A total of 15 cars were on display including 7 from AACA-KC members and 8 members from the church.

Bonnie and Bill Johnson brought their 1940 Plymouth Coupe, Norm Kressman brought his 1957 Cadillac, Dana and Dave Noble brought their 2007 Corvette Pace Car, Jim Hlaca brought his 1968 Camaro and Jon and Laura brought their 1969, 1970 and 2000 Camaros.

Jon Cooper took over 80 photos of the Learners posing inside and outside each car and provided printed copies to Jessica and the Learners following the event.

Bonnie and Bill's 1940 Plymouth was voted as the Learner's favorite car. Note the photo above showing the Learner’s hand-made awards. Everyone was deeply moved by their participation in this event and the smiles on the Learner's faces and their "Thank Yous" clearly indicated they had a great time.

Thank You! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our 2015 Committee Chairpeople for attending the meet in Lincoln.
