C O R N E R By: Martha GartnerMay is "Older American Month". According to the latest research,

the number of persons aged sixty-five years and up numbered 29.2 million in 1986, making up 12.1% of the United States population or one of every eight Americans,

There have been many advances in medical research and some have led to more successful aging. A happy, healthy long life requires a person to keep up on the latest medical research and learn to apply it to his own life. Help celebrate Older American Month by seeing what the library has to offer.Start by asking to see our Elderhostel Catalog at the Information Desk. Older adults enjoy inexpensive, short-term academic programs at campuses around the world. Courses of study range from gold panning in Colorado to American Indian Archaeology in Iowa.If your vacations run to more luxurious accommodations, try the 50 PLUS magazine which has a 23-page travel section in the month of May. You might also be interested in a recent book entitled Prime Time: Sexual Health For Men Over Fifty by Leslie R. Schover. In this book, the author tackles specifically the aging process and the mystique of male potency and performance. It's good to know that sexual health for men over fifty need no longer be a taboo or misunderstood subject.

You Know You’re Growing Older When . . .

Everything hurts and what doesn't hurt, doesn’t work. You (eel like the night before, and you haven't been anywhere. You get winded playing chess.Your children begin to lock middle aged. You Anally reach the top of the ladder, and find It leaning against the

wrong wall.Your mind makes contracts your body can’t meet. You know all the answers, but nobody asks you the questions. You look forward to a dull evening. You walk with your head held high trying to get used to your bifocals. Your favorite part of the newspaper is 25 years ago today. You turn out the light for economic rather than romantic reasons. You sit in a rocking chair and can't make it go.Your knees buckle and your belt won't.You're 17 around the neck, 42 around the waist, and 96 around the golf

course. You step looking forward to your next birthday. After painting the town red, you have to take a long rest before

applying a second coat. You remember today, that yesterday was your wedding anniversary. The best part of your day is over when your alarm clock goes off.You burn the midnight oil after 9 p.m.Your back goes out more than you do.A fortune teller offers to read your face. The little gray haired lady you help across the street is your wife. jYou get exercise acting as a pallbearer for your friends who exercise. You have too much room in the house and hot enough in the medi

cine cabinet. You sink your teeth Into e steak and they stay there.

BOOKMOBILE: ̂ . _ _ ..The Bookmobile staff is gearing up for the Summer Reading Program. This year it's called "Magic In Books '. In the past, this has been a great incentive for children to keep reading during the summer months. We are looking forward to joining the other area libraries In offering this program. Our latest venture has been the nursing home Edison Estates. Any resident who can get out to the Bookmobile does so with the help of our wheelchair-lift. For those who can't get out, we have assigned four people to each floor so that personal service can be given. At this time we already have made a real bond with our friends there. We hope to offer them more in the future-large print books, magazines and books with cassettes. Currently, handouts, including puzzles and large print calendars, are very well-received.Larieda Harma, a talented resident of Edison Estates has consented to share one of her poems with us:

If you love to read poetry or would like to learn how to write your own, here's a sampling of what we have in our collection:Writing Verse As A Hobby 808.1 REEThe Sandburg Collection 811.52 SANThe Collected Poems 811. PLA

***************************************************************Try this trick: BLOW THE BOOK DOWN

All you need for this "catch" trick is a big, thick book - like a dictionary-and a paper bag, which you secretly put in your pocket before you start* Now place the book on the table and invite anyone from your audience to blow it over. The result may be several red faces! Then, while everyone is getting back their breath, you announce you will topple the book in seconds. Just blow in the bag and, as it inflates, the book will fall. After all, you did blow it over by breath- power! (Fun with Magic by Geoffrey Cowan)
