GARY GREEN

Gary Green has been telling stories for a number of years. He has told tales of the sea and local history to passengers aboard the schooner J&B, a tour boat operating mainly out of St. John’s, NL and briefly out of Halifax, NS. Gary has performed at the Cape St. Mary’s Festival and on television as part of the se-ries, Legends and Lore of the North Atlantic. He has preformed to groups of children and seniors and is a valued contributor to the St. John’s Storytelling Circle.

Performance: Town Hall— Sat., May 18th, 8:00 pm

Performance:

Town Hall—Sun. May 26th, 8:00 pm.

DAVE PADDON

Dave Paddon was born and raised in Northwest River, Lab-rador. He is a crowd favourite at storytelling and ballad-singing events and has per-formed at festivals on both sides of the island.

Dave writes riotously funny recitations about everything from picking berries to playing cards. Whether he's celebrat-ing the staying power of a turr or the prowess of his snowmo-bile, he's proof that the art of writing recitations is alive and well in Newfoundland. A fa-vourite at song circles, story-telling sessions and festivals,

Dave is a great performer of his own and others' poems.

Dave is a senior pilot with Air Canada and spent 20 years based in big cities in mainland Canada, but the lure of Newfoundland and Labrador pulled him back in 2004. When he moved home, he started taking peo-ple on his own flights of fancy.

Two of Dave's compositions have been published, with another in the works.

HUBERT FUREY

Hubert was born in Harbour Main and he began writing humourous 'songs' and recitations as a teenager. "Raisin Bread", his first recitation to be performed publicly, won first prize in the "Tall Tale Contest" of the Newfoundland Storytelling Festival in 2006.

Hubert released his first CD, As the Old Folks Would Say, a collection of original recitations — fictionalized stories in verse

drawn from Newfoundland outport culture. Composed and performed by Hubert, the recitations focus on the many diverse aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador life, bringing a humorous cast to such traditional Newfoundland pastimes as blueberry picking, squidding, moose hunting, partridge hunting, etc. The stories are fanciful, imaginative and entertaining.

DON BROWNRIGG This Halifax-based Newfoundlander blends his haunting voice, melodies and pensive writing into non-assuming folk-pop music. He has toured Canada, New England, and Europe and has performed at events such as Popkomm (Berlin), CMJ (New York City), and CMW (Toronto). He has been a guest at shows for Serena Ryder, Great Lake Swimmers, Gurf Morlix, Martyn Jo-seph, and Amelia Curran as well as lending his talents as an instrumentalist, vocalist or writer to dozens of recordings and live shows of other artists.

"[He] takes the listener in instantly and, like a good novel, keeps you captivated from beginning to end. Acoustic based, the songs don't try too hard and aren't intimidating in any way - it's just beautiful, truthfully written music." - The Tele-gram, (St. John's, NL)

The Bay St. George Folk Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization formed in March 2007 to promote folk art in the Bay St. George and Port au Port Peninsula areas.

Monthly Folk Nights provide local artists and musicians with the op-portunity to showcase their talents. Newfoundland traditional music is an important part of our culture. Fiddle, mandolin and accordion ses-sions facilitate the learning and development of skills playing these instruments in an informal group setting.

SWIG AWAY

Brian Rowsell & Ron O’Connell have been playing together at family campfires for around 20 years with a love for Irish and New-foundland traditional music. In 2005, after many requests by friends and family they moved themselves, and their music, to the public stage.

2013 marks the 6th year Swig Away has provided the enter-tainment every Wednesday and Friday Night on Crystal Wa-ters Boat Tours in the Bay of Islands!

Their songs range from slow Irish Ballads like "Botany Bay" to very upbeat dancing songs like "Old Black Rum"! They also have a few original songs that have been very well re-ceived. First and foremost they like to hear people laugh, sing along, and tap their feet! Their style is not only sing-ing...they like to mix in a few "Good Quality" jokes and poke fun at each other (like good friends do).

Performance:

Cat Stop—Sun. May 26th, 5:00 pm

LEE DOWNER

Lee is an up-and- coming singer song-writer from central Newfoundland. His songs are a unique and insightful blend of acoustic folk, rock and blues. He’s been playing guitar for most of his life and writing original music for over a decade.

Lee holds member-ships with MusicNL and SOCAN and has recently started performing and promoting his music locally. Music runs in his family and he often performs as part of an acoustic duo with his father Calvin Downer.

Performance:

Town Hall—Mon. May 20th 4:00 pm Youth Concert

SHELDON McBREARITY & KEN CAMPBELL

Ken and Sheldon did a few gigs in University in the mid 70's, and would occa-sionally jam during sum-mer vacations. They reu-nited musically after Ken moved from Labrador to Corner Brook and now do regular gigs in Corner Brook and Gander. Ken

figures prominently on Sheldon’s recent solo album entitled Eve-

rything After, both vocally and instrumentally. Ken also com-

piled one of the songs for the album, entitled Myths Of The

Night.

Currently, Ken’s primary musical affiliations include playing shows with Harry Martin, Richard Neville, Sheldon and a band called “Elements” out of Corner Brook.

For Sheldon, songwriting is marking the journey, an attempt to

capture those moments before they disappear.

Performance:

Town Hall—Sun. May 19th 8:00 pm

The band consists of Stuart (vocals, guitar, koto), Dan Fortin (double bass) and Tony Nesbitt Larking (drums, back up vo-cals).

Growing up in a household with a koto master for a mother, Stuart also lived in Japan as a child, and came up-on the traditional 13-stringed floor harp honestly, taking les-sons with her mother’s sensei.

The Jessica Stuart Few is one of the hottest groups to emerge from the Toronto eclectic indie folk scene. Their sound transports the listener – storytelling set to music that takes chances, all the while maintaining the sing-along hooks that make the group accessible to the roots audience, from folk club, to house concert to festival. In March 2013, ‘The

Few’ launched their sophomore album, Two Sides To Every

Story, the much anticipated follow-up to their critically ac-

claimed debut, Kid Dream.
