Cox PTSA Newsletter
Principal’s Message September 2014
Welcome to a new school year at Frank W. Cox High School! Students are off to a great start, and many exciting things are happening at school.
Open House went smoothly earlier this month, due to some fine-tuning based on last year’s feedback from parents and teachers. Parents in attendance had the opportunity to visit all their students’ teachers and learn about what students will be accomplishing in classes this year. Thanks to the many parents and community members involved in our PTSA and Booster clubs! Because of you our school teems with volunteers. With your help our students experience great success in school. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to join our PTSA and our main Athletic Booster Club.
We also enrolled parents in Parent Portal, the live website where parents can view their students’ grades and attendance at any time of the day or night. To sign up for this very useful tool, please go to the Cox High School website at http://www.coxhs.vbschools.com/ and click on Parents in the top banner and Parent Portal in the drop down menu that appears. You’ll be glad you did! You may have noticed that our website has a new look. In an effort to create consistent views on all school websites, Virginia Beach City Public Schools created a new template for all schools to use. These new websites will be rolling out all over the city this fall. If you see errors on our website or would like to see information that you don’t, please feel free to contact our webmaster at [email protected].
I would also like to take a moment to remind parents and students of the importance of attendance. Attendance policies are established by the Virginia Beach School Board and by state regulation. Please help us insure that students don’t miss important instruction by scheduling their doctor/dentist appointments and family vacations when school is not in session.
Educating children is a team effort involving the school and the home. With your help, our students experience great success in school. Thanks for being a part of our team! Warm regards,
Randi R. Riesbeck, Ph.D.

CHORAL PROGRAM AND REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
Mark your calendars!!
Dear Falcon Families,
Our school year is well underway and the PTSA is so appreciative of your tremendous
support. Nearly 100% of our faculty and staff have joined our PTSA and so have over 200 students
and parents. We still have a goal to sign up many more supporters, so please join today, if you have
not already done so. In addition to supporting our state and national PTA, a portion of the dues
supports Cox H.S., and we are grateful to your commitment. We encourage students and parents to
join. Also, we would like to thank the generous families who have made donations to the Falcon
Funds. By making these donations, we are able to support many of our events, including
scholarships for our seniors, without fundraisers.
In August, we had a delicious luncheon catered by Outback Steakhouse for our teachers and
staff. Thanks to all the volunteers who set up, served and cleaned up for this event. The dirt cake
was a hit! Also, a group of PTSA volunteers served Chic-fil-A to welcome new students at the
Falcon Fest. The lunch was paid for by the PTSA. In addition, many people have noticed the
landscape around the front of the school. Volunteers from our organization have made our entrance
beautiful. This is another sign of the spirit of volunteerism at Cox H.S.
Currently, a dedicated group is heading up the Reflections Contest, another group is
collecting books for our annual used book sale and a third group is collecting used shoes. Please
donate any used books and shoes to this cause, and they may be dropped off in the school library
and other places in the community. Soon you will be learning more information about our All Night
Grad Fest (ANG) for our seniors. Believe it or not, the committee for ANG is already making plans
for the graduation party.
One of the best ways to get involved at Cox High School is to come to the PTSA monthly
meeting. They are the first Mondays of each month at 6:00 PM in the library. The meeting is open
to anyone interested. Please join us Oct. 6 or Nov. 3, 2014.
Sincerely,
Suzy Oleszko
PTSA President

Your business/organization can initiate a partnership in the Partners in Education program by contacting the school at 648-5250 or emailing the school partnership coordinator at [email protected].
EXTRA HELP AND TESTING
Tutoring, Peer Tutoring, and Extra Help

available every block. Ask your Algebra teacher. If you are not in Algebra but need to take the SOL in
May, please see Ms. Chamberlain in room 141 for tutoring details.
Don’t forget that extra help is also available during all lunches and during the 2nd half of every Academic
Support block in peer tutoring, room 141. Students may use the computers to practice or may receive help
with material they need to review.

SCA SCA is off to a wonderful start! We have decided on our school theme for the 2014-2015 school year: Green, Gold and Bold. This is a push for a revival of school spirit. Homecoming week will start on October 20 with our traditional bonfire from 6:00-8:00 PM. Our Homecoming pep rally, football game and parade will be on Friday. The semi-formal dance will be on Saturday this year in the gym at Cox from 7-10:00 PM. Our events for the year include Boo Bash, Angel Tree, Powerderpuff, Student Exchange with Landstown HS, a Middle School Leadership Workshop, Mr.Cox, CHKD Love Run, and our new Spring Carnival, which be on March 25. This year is going to be great and filled with school spirit! Go Falcons! Written by Nick W, SCA President
Jennifer Nardelli SCA Advisor
Wanted: Used Shoes for Angel Bins
The Cox PTSA is currently collecting used shoes as a fundraiser to support our
events this year. The shoes must be in wearable condition, tied together with laces
or wrapped with a rubber band in pairs. We have a minimum goal of collecting
10,000 pairs of shoes that ultimately will be shipped to a developing country. This
project is good for several reasons: it helps others, reduces waste in the landfills
and will raise money for our school. Please clean out your closets and donate your
used shoes. Tie them together, put them in a bag and deliver them to the school
library or other collection bins in the community or contact any member of the
PTSA, and they will help you deliver them to our collection areas.

The PTA is the largest and oldest child advocacy group in the world. Please join our
PTSA to help make a difference nationally, state-wide, and locally. We are striving for
100% membership!! Simply fill out the membership form and enclose $7 per member.
Remember this is a parent, student, teacher organization, thus, students are encouraged to
join. In addition, since Cox HS PTSA does not hold fund-raisers throughout the year, we
rely on a program of donation called Falcon Funds to support PTSA activities. At Cox
High School, your dues and donations help support the newsletter, Reflections, All Night
Grad for seniors, Scholarships, Falcon Fest for freshman, juvenile safety programs, and
tokens of appreciation for the faculty and staff throughout the year. We therefore invite
you to participate in our “Annual Falcon Funds” program. Your contribution may be
added to your membership check.
Please make checks payable to Cox High School PTSA and return the attached form to
school by mail (or drop off in the school office).
**All seniors who wish to apply for the Cox PTSA scholarships MUST be members of
the PTSA.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS
Students who are interested in membership in the National Honor Society should complete a Student Information Packet. Packets will be available on the Cox web site beginning October 1. The deadline for submission is Friday, January 9, 2015. No Student Information Packet received after this date will be considered for induction. Be aware that this form takes quite a bit of time to complete as signatures from coaches, activity advisors, and adults in charge of activities outside of the school community are needed for it to be completed. Each form will be reviewed by the Cox High School National Honor Society Selection Committee. This Committee will determine the nominees for induction. In late February the candidates who are selected for induction will be notified and provided with details regarding their induction ceremony (to be held in March of 2015). We will be holding a meeting to provide assistance in completing the packet on Wednesday, November 19 in Room 250. Thank you so much, Lisa Kopacz and Laura Roy NHS Sponsors
Back to School Luncheon Thanks to all who donated their time and goods to help out with this
grand event. It was a great luncheon enjoyed by all.

Let’s get this year in AVID started… The Cox High School AVID program started this school year in August with a 4
hour student-led PLP presentation to the faculty during Teacher In-service week.
The students worked many days in August planning and preparing for this
presentation, and they were rewarded with a standing ovation by the faculty at the
end. We again will be visiting the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College on
October 17th and this year, a large number of our seniors will be interviewed by
admissions officers for possible acceptance to VWC that day. We are already
planning for two community service projects in October. AVID students will plan
and prepare the Homecoming Bonfire table selling Krispy Kreme donuts and
bottled water. On October 29th, AVID students will be gently spinning local
children from the community to help “Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin” at the annual
Cox HS Boo Bash. College Night at the Virginia Beach Convention Center will be
held on Tuesday, October 28th and is a much anticipated event for our AVID
seniors who are able to meet with college admissions officers just prior to sending
their college applications. The month of November will find our AVID students
traveling Washington D.C. to visit Howard University and Georgetown University
for campus tours and information sessions as well as some time spent walking the
monuments of D.C. As you can see by our upcoming events, life for an AVID
student focuses on all things college.
Got College?
It’s only September and already two of our AVID seniors have been accepted to
college. (Mary Washington University and Campbell University) Hurrah!!!! Our
AVID seniors are currently working on their college applications and essays in
preparation for the early action deadline of November 1st of most colleges. The
Cox HS ACCESS counselor, Ms. Jenny Hechtkopf, has already visited with both
the junior and senior AVID classes to discuss application deadlines, financial aid
options, and scholarship information. “Operation College Acceptance” is in full
motion!
Quick update: Last year’s AVID seniors were awarded collectively over $700,000
in financial aid packages and scholarships. We hear that many of these students are
loving college and doing very well.

Did you know that National School Lunch Week
(NSLW) has been celebrated for over 50 years?! Or that it is scheduled every
year for the second full week in October by an Act of Congress? NSLW was started by
President John F. Kennedy in 1962 in order to have a weeklong celebration of the school lunch
program.
This year the NSLW is scheduled for October 13-17. The National School Lunch
Program (NSLP) provides meals rich in nutrients at a low cost or free to students. Our cafeterias
offer fruits and vegetables daily as well as whole grains. Check out our student menu on the
website to find out what is being served that week.
The theme for this year’s NSLW is “Get In The Game With School Lunch.” This theme helps to
encourage and celebrate the importance of having a well-balanced diet and participating in
physical activities. “Get In The Game” doesn’t have to stop at school. Promoting good nutrition
and physical activity as a family can be fun! Take a walk around the block after dinner as a
family or encourage your kids to try a new sport. Finding new, healthy recipes and having
everyone in the family help out could be a great family activity. This NSLW help to promote
good nutrition and getting active in your family!

Students gain skills in mechanical drawing and AutoCAD (computer assisted drawing). They study geometric construction, orthographic projection, pictorial drawings, and dimensioning. A Prerequisite class for Engineering and Architectural Drawing classes. Engineering Drawing* (grades 10-12, 1 credit) - This course provides students with the opportunity to learn the graphic language of industry for engineers, manufacturers, and technicians. It provides students with in-depth experiences in drawing problems and developing skills and techniques. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of industrial prints and the ability to use handbooks and AutoCAD. An important aspect of the course is the application of drafting principles to typical engineering drawing and design problems. ART NEWS
Over 150 amazing Fine Arts Department students have been busy participating in local
art events. They participated in the Neptune Festival Student show on the 28th of Sept, they
painted ceiling tiles for the Army to go in their recruiting office, they will be helping at the
Annual Boo Bash at Cox and they will be helping the Great Neck Library prepare holiday floats
for two separate parades. Do you have extra latex paint sitting around? We would appreciate
your donations. It would greatly help out with these outside projects. Also a big shout out to
Emily B. who has one of her semifinal films in the finals for the All American High School Film
Festival which will take place late October in New York City. Way to go Emily!
NAHS – National Art Honor society memberships are still open. If your students are still
interested have them stop by room 102 for the application. Dues are $5 annually. Entertainment
books are currently on sale. $25.
Art Club is currently forming, so if your students are interested have him/her swing by

Parents of the Classes of 2016 and 2017
The senior All Night Graduation (ANG) celebration is a fun, safe, and
alcohol free event organized by the PTSA. It begins the night of
graduation and goes until 5a.m. the next day. This event has been held
for the past 23 years. Parents and teachers organize transportation, food,
dancing, prizes, movies, and so much more. To ensure these classes have
a senior ANG celebration, parents are needed NOW to participate in this
year’s ANG to see how this great event is organized so that they can
coordinate future celebrations. More than half of this year’s committee
will be leaving along with their senior students in 2015. If you would
like to be a part of this great event, contact Anita Ward at
[email protected]. Now would be the time.
ALL NIGHT GRADUATION Alert
The Class of 2015 will be celebrating their graduation at Gameworks
(formerly known as Jillian’s) in Chesapeake. The event will be June 20, 2015,
so mark your calendar.
What about the Class of 2016?? Help is needed NOW to join the All Night
Grad Committee to ensure a safe, alcohol/drug free, and fun celebration for
future classes.
