St. John Medical Center Golf Classic is a Hit!
SJMC President & CEO William A. Young with Timothy Doyle, SJMC Leadership Council
Highlighting the day was the extraordinarily generous gift of $100,000 to SJMC from event co-chairs, Mary and Dr. Rustom Khouri.
“It was an honor and a privilege to serve as co-chairs of the event.,” said Dr. Khouri. “The cause is a great cause. This is our hospital. It is clearly in our minds to make this the best possible medical facility that it can be. We want this hospital to provide the people of this community with the best health care they can receive anywhere in the country. The effort we make for St. John Medical Center is not work, it is a labor of love. Both Mary and I are proud to serve St. John Medical Center. It is important that it always remain as the leader in health care in our community.”
“We have an outstanding community hospital in St. John Medical Center with ever-increasing evidence of the medical excellence that is achieved there,” noted Robert C. Smith, CEO of event sponsor Spero-Smith Investment Advisors & Chairman of the SJMC Board. “Through their partnership with University Hospitals and the Sisters of Charity, this hospital is connected to the best there is in health care. The turnout for the Golf Classic was just phenomenal. SJMC is a gem right here in our own back yard and we don’t want to ever see that over-looked. I have seen first-hand the excellence they have achieved. The golf outing was a great way for supporters to come together, have a good time and also bring resources to the ever-increasing demands the hospital faces in its commitment
to excellence.” Young said the generosity of all the sponsors fits the hospi-
tal’s mission to exist as a treasured health care resource and vital community asset serving the West Side communities of Greater Cleveland perfectly.
“Our long-standing mission is to provide care that is com-passionate and professional, rooted in a deep reverence for human life and an appreciation for the dignity of each person we serve,” said Young. “
Young extended special gratitude to Inaugural Sponsor Hun-tington Bank, Presenting Sponsor Spero-Smith Investment Advi-sors and Eagle Sponsors BakerHostetler, Carnegie Management & Development Corp., FSM Capital Management, PNC Bank, and the Sisters of Charity Health System. Dinner Sponsor was Univer-sity Hospitals.
“The Inaugural St. John Medical Center Golf Classic was an incredible success thanks in large part to our ability to secure corporate sponsorship early in our planning process,” said Chris Burdon, Senior Development Officer at St. John Medical Center. “We received our first major commitment from Spero-Smith In-vestment Advisers in late 2013 and that produced a great deal of momentum.”
“Thanks to your generosity and that of your companies we have made the Inaugural SJMC Golf Classic a tremendous suc-cess,” said Young.

I hope the readers of The Villager are having a wonderful summer. I know that when summer comes around and all the kids are out of school, I feel like a little kid again, too, and ready to romp and have some fun at the beach.
Let me tell you about a scenario that occasion-ally happens in every single dental office. Someone comes in with a broken tooth and says to the den-tist, “I just want you to patch it up and get me out of here”. Many times that comes with a request not to take an x-ray because, “Oh, you don’t need an x-ray, you can just look at it and patch me up”. I guess that we dentists should take that as a compliment being that our patients think that we are Superman and have x-ray vision and are able to really fix the impossible.
Now, many times a tooth may have a small little hole in it or have a minor break that can actu-ally be patched up. For the most part though, patch-ing a tooth by throwing another filling into it is just impossible. You see, to hold
a filling, you need some solid tooth structure in order to accomplish that. Many times a tooth that already has a big filling, which now is cracked, has very little tooth to connect the patch work to. Most of the time when a patient wants a tooth “patched up” it is just impossible to do.
Nearly every day in the office, I see patients with teeth that are over 90% filled because of four or five quick little patch works that were placed in the past. The tooth then cracks and the patient needs a root canal and a crown. Upon ques-tioning people who have gone through this scenario, I commonly find out that they have spent so much money on the little patch-work jobs that they eas-ily could have invested in a porcelain crown way back when and actually saved money rather than spend-ing the money on little fixes, here and there. Now they are forced into a situa-tion where they have to put a lot more money into this tooth, which could have been much more easily
treated earlier on, or they may end up losing the tooth, which will have to be replaced with a bridge or an implant, which can be even more costly.
My job as a dentist is to do the absolute best for my patients as I would do for a member of my family. I do appreciate the thought that people do think that den-tists are supermen and can do the absolute impossible. Most of the time, the im-possible is just not the right thing to do for the tooth, and more so for the patient. Patchwork dentistry always
costs more in the long run in terms of time, pain and money.
Invest in your teeth now so that you will look good, feel good and they will last a long time. In your daily activities, you should not even have to think twice about the functioning of your mouth and teeth. That is our goal - healthy mouths and healthy smiles. We are here to help you in any way we can. For a free consultation, please call 440-892-1810.

On Thursday, June 26 the residents of Bradley Bay were treated to a concert by a very surprising group of musicians. Musicians by night but letter carriers by day! That’s right – the Cleveland Letter Carriers Band performed for over an hour. Over 25 of the approximate 80 person band entertained residents and had everyone singing a happy tune.

Triumph for the Cure: The Importance of Early Mammogram Fun was had by all at the 21st Triumph for the Cure Golf Outing to benefit the Breast Health Center at Fairview Hospital on Monday, June 23. Golfers gathered at Westwood Country Club for a great time on the links, and then convened for the luncheon high-lighted by keynote speaker Amanda McGraw. Amanda, an attorney, gave a moving testimonial cap-turing her fight with breast cancer. Her story began with the importance of an early baseline mammogram, and then continued to cover her story of diagnosis, surgery and recovery. Her video highlights of a trip to country star Tim McGraw’s appearance at Blossom Music Center offered a moving tribute to the spirit of recovery. It included a shot of McGraw meeting Amanda at the stage of his Blossom concert and planting a kiss on her bald head. A year later, Amanda was able to meet McGraw again at a pre-concert
event where he once again noted her courage and helped celebrate her recovery. Amanda’s physician, Dr. Debra Pratt, Medical Director of the Breast Center at Fairview Hospital, also spoke. She re-prised the importance of an early mammogram for all wom-en. Reiterating Amanda’s experience, it was a baseline mam-mogram Amanda had done prior to turning 40 that allowed a timely diagnosis of her later cancerous lesion. The ability to compare mammograms led to an important early diagnosis of Amanda’s cancer that may well have saved her life. Dr. Neil Smith, President of Fairview Hospital, made a special appearance to pay tribute to important sponsorship provided by Triumph for the Cure supporters. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s Tri-umph for the Cure, especially RPM International Inc., for helping Community West Foundation to Illuminate Hope in the community!

Welcome, Summer!Welcome, Summer! What better way to welcome summer than with the
6th annual Cleveland Museum of Art Summer Solstice!Thousands jammed the Museum and grounds as
they partied the night away on the longest day of the year. Over 6,000 guests attended this year’s Solstice as they enjoyed music, food and an amazing light show that turned the Museum exterior into a psychedelic canvas.
Eight global musicians performed on two stages both indoors and out. Guests were also welcome to ex-plore the museum’s galleries, getting a first hand glimpse of the museum’s newest exhibit, “Yoga, The Art of Trans-formation.”
“Transformation” is a good word to use in describ-ing the way the classic look of the museum grounds and architecture offered a fluid and dynamic way to see things a little differently for one night.
Esoteric music offering sounds of Caribbean, Latin, superhip electronics, a Turkish DJ who spun a magi-cal trance, musicians of Central Asia and more added a sonic backdrop to the Joshua Light Show’s throwback to the visuals of the 60’s Fillmore East on the museum facade.
It all added up to an immersion into summer, Cleveland-style. A great way to cut loose after a long, hard winter.

Bay Village Police have issued a Scam Alert. Bay Police received a call from a female resident on Brad-ley Rd. on June 27 She had sold an item on Craig’s List. She received a check for an amount which exceeded the agreed upon price. Sender told her to deposit the check and send back the difference. She received a call from the Moneygram fraud department and was told the check is a scam. The sender has told her it is not a scam and she should keep trying to find some-place that will accept it. She lost no money and still has the item in her possession. The caller was advised by the BVPD about this situa-tion - a check received for an amount greater than the actual price. It is typically an indication of a scam be-ing attempted. Contest Scam
A resident on Knick-erbocker called police on June 27 to say about 3-4 years ago he began getting phone calls about contests to enter and win a lot of money. These contests ap-parently originated out of Jamaica. Caller claimed he sent thousands of dollars to these “contests” and never got anything from it. Now, he is getting calls again from someone saying they are looking into this for him, but need more money to do it. He is sending $20-$40 at a time and is not sure how much he has now sent. The homeless male declined a ride back to the shelter from the officers at the scene, and he was advised to leave the area. At 2047 hrs, more complaints werecalled in. The male was transported without incident back to the homeless shelter in Cleveland where he had been staying.
“Cable” Guy Disconnected by Westlake Police A suspicious male entered a Detroit Rd. restaurant on
June 20 at 1:30 p.m. claiming that the cable system there needed a new part, report Westlake Police. He was not in uniform and could not produce any paperwork. He also could not find the part that needed replacing. Management followed up with the cable provider, who also could not verify that any such repairs were needed. The subject is de-scribed as a black male with short hair and a bald spot. He is 5’10” 150 lbs. clean-shaven. He wore a black t-shirt, blue jeans, neon green safety vest, white hard hat, and brown work boots. He was wearing an ID lanyard around his neck with the name “Josh.” Fraud Reports

He found the charges upon checking his state-ment and closed the account.A Bradley Rd. woman was notified by her bank about a suspicious transaction on her debit card on June 23. Some-body charged $128 worth of items at a Troy, MI gas station. The account was closed. Gassed Out, Passed Out
