NvMA Awards Banquet in Reno
COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 NvMA Safety Awards banquet and Lake Tahoe wildfires
cancelled plans for the September 2021 Safety Awards banquet, but the Nevada Mining
Association brought the 2020 and 2021 awardees to Reno last month for a 2-day cele-
bration of these safety award winners. Pictured above are the RM winners from left to
right: Ralph Bass, Eric Merritt, John Burton, Ann Vath, RMGC Representative Gary Svo-
boda, Kathleen Autenrieth, and Darrell McMillan. Read more on page 2.

2021 Nevada Mining Association Individual Safety Awards
The Nevada Mining Association is an
organization that supports the mining
industry along with the industries that
support mining in Nevada. The mission
of the Nevada Mining Association is to
unite, educate, and serve as the public
voice of Nevada’s modern mining in-
dustry. Since 1913, the Nevada Mining
Association has partnered with policy-
makers, regulators, and community
leaders to ensure the State’s natural
resources can be protected while min-
ing communities are allowed to thrive.
Learn more about this beneficial organi-
zation at www.nevadamining.org.
Each year in conjunction with their an-
nual convention, the Nevada Mining
Association awards individuals with
safety awards. These safety awards begin with nominations at
each site in the categories of General Manager, Safety Manag-
er, Mine Manager, Superintendent, Safety Professional, Super-
visor, General Supervisor, Safety Champion, Trainer, and EMS
Mine Rescue. They look for individuals who are industry pro-
fessionals whose extraordinary efforts ensure all mine workers
return home safely after every shift. This is based on their per-
formance during the previous calendar year. Nearly 100 nomi-
nations were submitted by industry peers and 37 individuals
were selected. Of the 37 winners, 8 individual award winners
were chosen from Kinross Round Mountain.

Mine Manager: Chris Swanson
Superintendent: Kathleen Autenrieth
General Supervisor: Ann Vath
Supervisor: Eric Merritt
Safety Champion: Ralph Bass
Safety Champion: Bruce Woods
Trainer: Darrell McMillan
EMS Mine Rescue: John Burton
Above right: Darrell McMillan humbly accepted his award. Like the others, Darrell thought there were more deserving people for the
award, but acknowledges that it feels good to be recognized. “Keeping people safe is by far the top reason I got involved in training.
Training is all about efficiency, proficiency, and safety. Each of these reinforce and enhance the others. The safest way to do a job
is usually the most efficient and more proficient we can help someone become the more we can improve their odds of success,”
said Darrell. He continued to describe the driving forces that attribute to his safety success. “First and foremost, I follow the rules.
Second, when I began my career here many years ago, one of my mentors, Jim Swigart said to me, ‘ Never turn your back on an
unsafe act or condition.’ These two things guide my actions everyday.”

Right: Mill General Foreman Ann Vath cares about safety cul-
ture. She says, “Safety is the utmost importance in my every-
day work life.” Putting safety first keeps her and her coworkers
in a safe working environment. Ann models safety in her job by
leading by example. She believes in working through safety
issues to find solutions in an positive way. Ann also stays in
communication with her crews.
Above: EMS Mine Rescue team member John Burton wants to
make sure that everyone goes home in the same condition
they showed up in. That’s why he makes safety a priority in the
workplace. “I spend my days constantly thinking about ways
those of us on the team can improve our trainings to make sure
miners have the best care possible on their worst days,” says
John. He says he’s not in the EMS/responder field to get a pat
on the back, but says it was an honor to be recognized.
Right: Projects Supervisor Eric Merritt says safety is first, no
matter what starting from the very basics of PPE up to high risk
activities. Eric said, “In dealing with contractors their safety
practices off the mine site doesn’t necessarily match the safety
standards we have on the mine site. So my day starts with
making sure they understand and adhere to our safety policies,
procedures, and standards.”

Announcement from Sunnyside Museum
2021 Nevada State Silver Cup Championship
The Nevada North Women’s Squad breezed to a 24-16
victory over the South Squad in the 2021 Nevada State
Silver Cup Championship at Dayton Valley Golf Club and
The Club at Arrow Creek in Reno. The event was reduced
to a two-day event–four-ball play in Day 1 and singles in
Day 2, when snow forced cancellation of play the first day.
Both teams were awarded five points for Day 1 when
there was no play. The North won the second day’s four-
ball session 6.5-3.5 and wrapped up the title with a 12.5-
7.5 win in the final day’s singles session. Tournament lo-
cation alternates North and South each year. Twenty
women representing Nevada South and 20 women repre-
senting Nevada North faced off in the event as the North
won back the Silver Cup. Overall, Team North now has a
16-12 edge in the annual event. Local Round Mountain
Golf Course member, Ruthie Maxwell (front row, to the
right of the trophy), won both of her matches during the 2-
day event. She also played in the Nevada State Senior
Women's Amateur in Boulder City Oct 29-30, which was
the final event of the year.
The Sunnyside Museum has de-cided not to hold their annual fund-raiser for this year. With the current economy and the uncertain future, they don't want to pressure their wonderful communi-ty for support. They would rather have you come visit them on our open house dates. Take advantage of the rich history that is the Sunnyside Museum. Our open house dates are:
November 20 December 18
