November 2nd - OPLC’s big Silent Auction! Danny Harmsen, the auction chairperson, doesn’t do this in a few weeks! He works on this, the biggest money-maker for the Club, all year long. He receives donations for the Club, and often needs to pick-up from the donor’s home. We are talking about rocks, of course - often by the truck-load! He sorts, grades, packages the items, and prepares bid sheets. Then he organizes boxes of mixed packages for the Auction tables, so it all runs smoothly on the day of the Silent Auction. Not to mention flyers, signs, food, money-collection and, I’m certain, much, much, more.

So lets help Danny make this Auction another success in a long line of successes. Come to the Auction prepared to bid! Bring friends, tell fellow rockhounds, and anyone you know with an interest in the lapidary arts. It’s going to be a fun day! Bid up a friend - remember, it’s for the Club! Your Club! And don’t forget, you may find a treasure you can’t live without.

The following Saturday, November 9th, is our regular monthly meeting. See you there!

-John

OPLC MONTHLY MEETING October 1, 2013

President John Poole opened the meeting at

10:20 and the speaker was introduced by Jean

Barkley and Twink Monrad. Professional

meteorite hunter Mike Farmer of Tucson spoke

to the members about his adventures which have

taken him all over the world. He brought some

meteorites for show and tell and also brought

some to sell.

After the program John Poole thanked Mike for

his presentation, and Mike Demeritt for bringing

the refreshments.

The minutes of the September monthly meeting

were approved as they appeared in the

newsletter.

There were two guests at our meeting.

Mark Gibson gave the treasurer’s report which

will be filed for audit. We are still doing fine

with our budget.

CLASSES: Jenny Coniglio will have a bead

stringing class starting after the November 9th

monthly meeting. If you are interested please

email her at : [email protected] or call her

at 400-6057 to sign up for the class which will

include many facets of bead stringing.

Billy Bob Riley has had no turnout for his

Tuesday evening silversmithing class or for his

Wednesday evening faceting class so until

further notice these classes are cancelled.

PROGRAM FOR NOVEMBER: Vice President

Jean Barkley will order a DVD from the Rocky

Mountain Federation to show at the meeting.

DECEMBER MEETING: This will be our annual

Christmas luncheon.

MEMBERSHIP: Wayne Klement reported a

total of 341 members.

NOVEMBER SILENT AUCTION: Saturday

November 2nd and Dan Harmsen reports it will

be excellent.

John Poole reported that the

training center restroom is being

renovated to be ADA accessible.

The work is being done by John, Pete Peterson

and Mike Tucker.

Skip Barkley and Mike Demeritt are heading up

the nominating committee for our upcoming

election. There are four spots open: Vice

President and three Board positions. Please call

Skip if you are interested in serving our Club as

a volunteer who will be able to help make

decisions and help plan the future of our very

successful lapidary club (his phone number is 520

-546-1651). Any nominee must have been a

member of our Club for six months.

John Poole asked that we all continue to bring in

aluminum cans as the cash helps the club.

He also announced that Gloria Jean Dana will

begin as a new monitor in the lapidary room on

Mondays from 9 to 12.

Jim Baker and Mark Gibson have completed the

light box to display the flowstone on loan from

Kartchner Caverns and it looks very nice.

NEW POLICY IN ALL CLASSROOMS/LABS:

This now includes the faceting and casting labs.

There will be a sign in/out sheet in all labs so the

names of all members using the rooms and

equipment and the hours of use will be recorded.

This is important for budgeting for new

equipment and also this will keep track of how

the rooms are being used. Also, please note that

the sign in sheets will have the rules for proper

use of the equipment listed and all members are

expected to abide by the rules.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 followed by

the drawings for door prizes and raffle. Ticket

sales were $131.

Respectfully submitted,

Twink Monrad, Secretary

NOVEMBER PRESENTATION

Those Fabulous Thunder Eggs- DVD presentation

Everything you want to know about thunder eggs and locations where they are found, including Deming, New Mexico’s famous Baker Ranch.

Very well done DVD with great pictures and audio. Do you know why they’re called “thunder eggs” ?

If not, you will find out in this presentation.

OCTOBER SPEAKER

In October, we were treated to an exceptional

presentation by Mike Farmer, an independent

Meteorite dealer and enthusiast. Mike was incredibly

knowledgeable and really knew his meteorites! He

shared many stories of collecting meteorites around

the globe, including some that were very unexpected!

A big OPLC “Thank You” to Mike for his presentation,

and here’s to hoping for a return performance! Mike,

hopefully next time you don’t have any new, $10,000+

paperweights!

THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW…

The words “racecar”, “kayak”, and “level” are palindromes - they read the same forwards or

backwards.

There are only four words in the English language that end in “dous” - stupendous, horren-

dous, hazardous, and tremendous.

There are two words in the English language that use all five vowels in order: “abstemious”

and “facetious”.

A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time, measuring 1/100th of one second!

Almonds are a member of the peach family.

An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain (you may also know some people who have a similar

problem…)

Babies are born without kneecaps. They don’t appear until the child is 2-6 years old!

February 1865 is the only recorded year in history without a full moon.

If the population of China walked by you eight-abreast, the line would never end because of

the rate of reproduction!

Peanuts are one of the ingredients in dynamite!

The cruise liner QE-2 moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns!

All of the ants in Africa together weigh more than all of Africa’s elephants.
