Before Karen Daniels, with her beautiful soprano voice was to lead us in the singing of America the Beautiful. Mike gave us a little history of the composer of the song, Katherine Lee Bates. She was a feminist composer and Wellesley professor.

Mike then provided us with the two Thoughts for the Day.

‘’ No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won by making the other poor bastards die for theirs.’’ General George Patton ‘’We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. George Orwell

Mike mentioned that an estimated 22 veterans per day commit suicide and that this is more than twice that of our civilian population and is due primarily due to seeing dead bodies, frequent deployment and post-traumatic stress, feelings of hopelessness and access to firearms.

THE PROGRAM

President Keller passed the podium back to Mike Ferguson and he stepped forward to introduce todays speaker, Branden Bowman. Sergeant Bowman joined the United States Marine Corps in 2012 as a Helicopter Crew Chief and served five years in MCAS New River North Carolina. Sgt Bowman received the highest qualifications of a Crew Chief; Weapons and Tactics instructor, East Coast Crew Chief of the Year and also logged over 1000 flight hours without a mishap earning him an award from Sikorsky Helicopters Inc. As mentioned

earlier by Mike Ferguson, Sgt Bowman discussed the difficulty many soldiers have when they return to civilian life. These difficulties in adaptation have led to an unusually high suicide rate among soldiers. Sgt Bowman talked about a multi-step program to assist these veterans in transitioning back to civilian life. Sgt Bowman has himself reached out for help with the transition and has received it. He has also reached out to others. He spoke of his difficulties, major and minor including a hard time finding a place to live and a lack of a social group to hang out with. He displayed a positive attitude despite the obstacles.

Sgt Bowman now volunteers as Assistant Liaison Representative for the Sonoma County Devil Pups, a youth leadership program.

THE FINAL BELL President Keller McDonald rang the final bell at precisely 1:30 pm.

FUTURE PROGRAMS

NOVEMBER 15, 2019 Stephen Zollman, Domestic Violence Sonoma County Domestic Violence Judge Bertoli as well as Analy Graduate, will discuss how Domestic Violence covers many relationships besides husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, partners, siblings, etc. He will also provide an overview of the court process including restraining orders, sentencing options and the role of Family Court Services concerning protection of children. Madeleine Keegan O'Connell, YWCA Executive Director will provide an overview of the causes of domestic violence, the various emotional impacts of domestic violence as well as the possible treatment/prevention programs available to support survivors of domestic violence to report it. NOVEMBER 22, 2019’’ David Still Comprehensive Immigration Reform. A History Lesson Some say we need Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Some say we don’t. Some have no idea what Comprehensive Immigration Reform is. And most people don’t realize that we did this once before. Yes, in 1986 the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) became law. It was a well thought out compromise package that was negotiated by both parties and signed by President Ronald Reagan. The perceived problems were the same then as now – the solutions considered “a balanced approach.” So what went wrong? David Still was head of the adjudications division of the San Francisco INS District in 1986 and was right in the middle of all of it. He will give a history lesson about the valiant attempt to fix a problem and why it went off the rails.
