From the President’s Desk
A very busy Sunday at the horses, with I imagine a nice profit for the books, Though we were a bit short on labour to start with, but a quick phone call helped to swell the numbers, thank you all!
Tonight we are honoured with a visit from our District Governor Steve and PDG Janette; welcome to Williamtown Rotary
Sadly Winifred is not well and I just received a phone call to hear that Paul has also fallen victim to the dreaded virus.
There is an urgent call for volunteers to help with the Challenge on September 9th to help David with the barby and to stay on to help pack up, finish by 3pm approx. Also a team of at least 3 from Williamtown Ro-tary are required Thursday the 1st of September to help. No doubt David will elaborate!
I note that the DG’s Partner ’s Project is to support End Polio Now, it is reported that the world is 1% away from a polio free world.
Please don't forget our commitment to Rainbow Bricks Lego on the 25th of September, I have no doubt this will be very successful having witnessed their display at Our Town Model Display, which by the way I was asked to display my hand made Australian die cast model tractors. We now have to put on our thinking caps and get the Christmas Carols planning underway.
Yours in Rotary.
Geoffrey

Welcome to District Governor Steve and PDG Janette
Steve was born in Wellington on the Central Slopes of NSW. During his final primary school year his family moved to Manilla and he attended Tamworth High School where he obtained the Leaving Certificate. He commenced work in the Petty Sessions Branch of the Department of the Attorney General and of Justice, seeing service in Gosford, Mait-land and the relieving staff before spending a number of years working in various metropolitan Courts, the research branch of the Justice Department and the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel. He obtained legal qualifications in 1969 and a post-graduate diploma in 1971. In 1980 he commenced work in a private legal practice in Cessnock concentrat-ing on family law and criminal law. He joined the Rotary Club of Cessnock in mid-1981. Steve and Janette married in 1965. Children of their own did not eventuate but after Steve joined Rotary they have hosted many youth exchange students, and continue to have reasonably regular contact with most. They have visited many of the students in their own countries and have attended weddings in the United States of America, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, Germany and Poland and are welcoming “grandchildren” some of whom are now in their teens.
Accepting a position as a Magistrate of the Local Court of New South Wales saw Steve leave District 9670 for a couple of years and during this time was a member of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West, but on his return he joined the Rotary Club of Newcastle Sunrise, then transferred to the Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise, finally returning to the Ro-tary Club of Cessnock. He retired as a Magistrate in 2010 but is occasionally called on to perform Bench Duty as an Acting Magistrate. During his Rotary career, Steve has held directorships of many club Boards and has been Treasurer, Secretary, Bul-letin Editor, Youth Director and public officer. He was President of the Rotary Club of Cessnock in 1989-90 and of the Rotary Club of Newcastle Sunrise in 2001-02. He was given a Paul Harris Award by the latter club. He is a member of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians. At District level, he was a member of the Youth Exchange Committee for many years and Deputy Chairman for 2 years. He was District Legal Officer and Resolutions Session Chair for 4 years before leaving the District, but resumed those roles in 2006 and is currently the District Public Officer. He was a member of selection committees for short-term overseas teaching scholarships for a couple of years. He was an As-sistant Governor for 3 years. He is a supporter of youth programs and has attended short and long-term exchange stu-dent briefings, RYPEN, RELAYID, RYLA and RYCAGS camps and is currently the Secretary-General of District MUNA. He has assisted at Science and Engineering Challenge days in Newcastle, Muswellbrook, Dubbo and Cobar. He has been a session leader at RYLA. Support for Rotary Health Pro-grams - Australian Rotary Health, ROMAC, Bowelscan and the District’s own MHERV project - are on his agenda.
