through a trying period, but there was con-fidence that time would resolve many of theproblems - and they were in control, at alltimes.Somehow, I feel many of the problems of theCanadian industry are inherited from thoseconditions existing in the U.S.So closely tied are these two nations, inmany businesses and particularly the recordbusiness, that we feel the pain of the inter-national industry whether the malady is oursor not.

ALL PRICES ON INCREASEThe consumer is aware of the overall priceincreases of many commodities and, in par-ticular those materials derived from oilproducts.Truly the record industry held the line fortoo long. Labour had already made the priceof manufacturing records very high andfinally when the increase came, it was ahefty one. Some dealers may have rebelledat the idea of charging more, but, as men-tioned, they must have been aware ofprice increases of everyday commodities.

As you walk through a department store orsit in a restaurant, you get the feeling thatinflation or not, these are good times forCanadians and money must be readilyavailable. No longer do we hear aboutunemployment, in fact we hear more abouta lack of good employees being available. In the wings waits a new sound that I feelis slowly evolving in the international indus-try. What we may be waiting for could be

KERSHAW DRAWS 1200TO PNE GARDENSWEA artist, Doug Kershaw, drew a crowdin excess of twelve hundred to his recentappearance at the Gardens of Vancouver'sPacific National Exhibition. Appearing withhis back-up band and preceded by theNorthern Flyer, a Texas bluegrass group,Kershaw was particularly well received bythe crowd, which included young and old, straight and hip. Tickets for the show wereset at $6.00.

CKWX, in co-operation with Cajun Produc-tions, promoted the appearance and partici-pated in a give-away of tickets and copies ofKershaw's "Mama Kershaw's Boy" LP.'WX personalities, Tom Peacock, Jim Morrisonand John Michaels emceed the show.

one of the most prosperous periods in thehistory of the music industry.

INDUSTRY READY FOR NEW IDEASThe industry appears ready for new ideas inmerchandising, promotion and recordings.Everything would seem to indicate a count-down to a very big fall season.Someone said recently there were alwaysbig sellers in the business. The question was- which company had them. This is very true, and the idea that thebusiness was big enough that you could sitback and rake in your share is becominga thing of the past.

It's become a very big business, and it'sgrowing - more than eighty years ofgrowing pains, but it is coming of age.The company that has the product and thesales, is the company that can get all theelements together to take advantage ofevery regional breakout and spread it acrossthe nation. Breakouts are god sent, but to sitback and enjoy just the regional sales canbe disastrous.

INFORMATION IS THE KEYQuite often a new record on a new labelbegins to break and the phones at RPMlight up with dealers asking who distributesthis record. Many times we don't know, and have to make exhaustive efforts tofind out. If RPM doesn't know, the industryis in trouble.

The industry is learning slowly, the worthand value of a trade magazine on themusic industry in Canada. Each week weflash music industry news across Canada torecord stores and radio stations about Cana-dian happenings in the trade, whether theybe domestic or international. The processing of news is a very impersonalthing. As observers, it is impossible for usto hold a grudge or show any favouritism. We treat news and information as just that. It's our job and duty to make any and allrelevant trade news available to the trade. There is no company too small that itdoesn't deserve a mention in RPM if, some-thing they are doing or have done is goingto assist the trade.

SUBSCRIBER IS "KING"Our subscribers are "king". For theirmoney, they deserve every scrap of informa-tion that will further their endeavour andtheir position. It seems that the more important youbecome, the more enemies you gatheralong the way. We acknowledge no enemiesand no critics. We treat everyone as fairlyas humanly possible. Some of you have known us for ten years. That lengthy relationship has endured. Someof you may be newcomers who haven'tknown us long enough to realize that overthose ten years, this magazine has strived toconsistantly work for the industry.

CIRCULATION MEANS POWERAs we have grown in circulation and power,we have acquired a new group of criticswho might find fault with the position of arecord on our charts that should have beentwo points higher. It boils down to - RPM is many things tomany people, and you can't please everyone. The industry can prosper and benefitfrom everyone working together and theseare good times and they seem to be gettingbetter.I hope RPM and our weekly effort iscontributing to that growth and prosperity.

Those were "the good old days"Since I began this series, I have had manygood comments and some ... not so com-plimentary. A number of people have asked,"What does Klees know about promotion

In 1948, I began a daily "teen" record showon radio station CHUM in Toronto. Atthat time the record industry was very insig-nificant to what it is today. Many of therecords that were featured on my one hourshow, were imported from the United States.I would have to make daily visits to Snider -man's Music Hall on College Street to pickup the latest records which Sam was bring-ing in from the U.S. They would be returnedthe following day. That was 26 years ago.The average age of the promotion man todaywould be (probably) less than 26. Many ofthem weren't born yet.

MUSIC BIZstan klees

A year later, I joined CKLB in Oshawawhere I was an announcer -operator. A greatdeal of the programming of those daysdepended on transcriptions.I left the radio business for a stint withTrans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada).Throughout my stay with the airline, someof my best friends were in radio. In 1956I resumed my career in the music businesswhen I joined MacKay Record Distributorsin Toronto, at that time the London Recorddistributor for Ontario. My position waspromotion and sales. Few companies hadfull-time promotion men in those days. Infact it has only been the last six years thatpromo men haven't had sales tasks to lookafter as well as promotion.

At that time the Stortz system of program-ming (a forerunner of today's format radio)had just been introduced in Canada. One of the first records I was sent out topromo was "Blueberry Hill" by Fats Domino. That was 18 years ago. Today's promo manof 26 would have been 8 years old.In 1956 I joined Astral Records to do salesand promotion. Six weeks later I was madeNational Sales Manager. Astral was a verysmall record company that catered toaudiophiles. We started to grow when weacquired the Pye Record line from England. It was Astral's biggest label. Astral becameAllied Records after I left in 1963.

On May 1st, 1963, I started TamaracRecord Productions and my own labelTamarac (which eventually became Red LeafRecords). At that time there were few (ifany) independent record producers inCanada. Facilities were limited. Most prod-uctions were done on three tracks. That maybe hard to believe for record producers whocan today record on 24 and 32 tracks.Regardless, we were able to produce manyCanadian hits and promote them on to thecharts. At the same time, and much moreimportant, the success of Canadian produc-tions caused more and more people tobecome involved and groups, producersand songwriters began to believe thatrecords could be produced in Canada.Until that time, most Canadian artistswould go to Nashville where in three hoursthey would hand you four sides. Usuallythe songs were written by Nashville writers. The groups and artists came back to Canada

and would make the rounds of the recordcompanies - and if they were lucky, arecord company would put out the recordfor them. They might even get 6% of 90% ,

of the suggested retail price. Hardly a goodroyalty, and advances of any kind werepractically unknown. I hope some of today'ssuccessful artists read this.In 1964, the United States record companiesbecame interested in records produced inCanada and for the first time a trickle ofCanadian recordings were being released inthe U.S.In 1967, Red Leaf and Tamarac started towind down, for reasons I don't wish to go intohere.

Since 1967, I have worked part-time as anadvisor to RPM and also as a consultant tothe industry, freelance writer, ghost writerand hopefully a patron of the music indus-try in Canada. I also own MusicAd&Artwhich is an advertising agency and art firmto the Canadian music industry.I am constantly in touch with record menand promotion men and devote all of mytime to the music industry. My agreement with RPM limits me to writeonly institutional articles for RPM, look

MUCH EMPHASIS ONCANCON AT OECAThe Ontario Educational CommunicationsAuthority (Channel 19) has advanced to thestage where they are now being referred toas "television for the people". They aresupplying exceptionally tight productionsof entertainment packages, passed over bythe better equipped networks who are look-ing for the more commercial approach. The OECA have also become interested inand involved with the Canadian performingartist. They recently aired two new pilotprograms - "The Singer", which starredcountry folk singer Roy Payne; and "AvecAngele", showcasing the talents of Acadianfolksinger Angele Arsenault. Both productions were a mixture of musicand documentation. The Arsenault filmingallowed the young singer to display hersongwriting talents with "Bois Ton Cafe","I Know I Hurt You Badly" and "TheGospel of Man and Woman".

Payne's "Singer" was recently awarded the"Prize of the Festival" at the 1974 Oberhau-sen Film Festival in West Germany, and wasfilmed at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto.Payne performed his own compositions inthe film including: "Born To Be A Gypsy,"Country Roads and City Streets", "NothingOn My Mind", and "Equal In Our Graves".Dates for televising of these series, ifapproved, will be announced shortly.Channel 19's Mike McManus, a sometimestalk show host, touched on the Canadianrecording industry (June 21) when, in aquiet setting, with a pianist playing foreigncopyrights, he discussed the industry withDave Charles, program co-ordinator ofCHUM/Toronto, Ian Thomas, GRT record-ing artist who broke into the hit arena with"Painted Ladies", and Ross Reynolds, president of GRT of Canada and presidentof the Canadian Recording Industry Associa-tion (CRIA).A pilot for a new series on the folk andcontemporary rock scene in Canada is nowbeing undertaken by the OECA with a hopedfor airing date by early fall.

after institutional projects for RPM (TheCommunications meets across Canada andthe Juno Awards etc.). I also look after all,RPM'S special projects. My firm, Stan KleesLtd., is paid a retainer by RPM, therefore,I am not on the staff of RPM.Whether all this qualifies me to write aseries on record promotion, advertising andrecord company procedures ... I don'tknow, but as I write, I feel that some of mycriticisms of the system could stimulatethought and in some cases cause changes thatmight benefit the promotion people and therecord companies.A great deal of what I have already writtenfor this series has been revamped justbecause the industry is changing and manyof my columns will be based on the helpfulcomments of record and promotion people.I would like to thank the promotion menI have consulted, the promo men that havephoned to make comments and the recordheads that have already indicated they aremaking changes because of my earlycomments.(Next week: Imagery and Imagineering)

This world is a tragedy for those who feel .. .WENGEN, Switzerland

"Aha, my good man" said the chap with thecrooked walking stick propped up againstthe postered wall of the Wengen railwaystation, "what I'd like to know is why arock author and commentator would comehere to write a book?"

"Why, that's very simple," said I at a meas-ured space, in this peculiar halting brand ofEnglish which one acquires when living ina foreign country. Turning in the direction ofthe 13,000 foot Jungfrau and other mightysister peaks, I replied: "Just look aroundyou."

( NUMBER ONE:1;;ivA WITH A BULLET

ritchie yorke

"Ah yes, I know that Wengen is beautifulbut tell me: does not a writer draw hisinspiration from the environment aboutwhich he writes? I would have thought thatbooks about rock music would be conceivedin the front row seat of a concert hall."

"Perhaps some people must write in thatmanner but not I. I have usually found thatrock's finest moments are discovered listen-ing to a record or tape player and you can dothat anywhere there's electricity or batteries.I can listen to just as much rock music up atthe chalet as I could in London or LosAngeles. Shove in the tape and there it is.""I'll grant you that the music is amazinglyportable but I still don't understand whatspecifically brought you to Wengen. Whynot St. Moritz or Gstaad or somewherewhere the night life is sufficiently active tostimulate one such as yourself?"

"It's quite simply really. Seven or eightyears ago, my lady and I spent 45 minutesin Wengen on our way up the Jungfrau. Wewent for a quick walk, took a few slidesand the memory has burnt strongly eversince. In almost a decade of wanderingaround the world, we have never seen amore beautiful place, nor indeed a moreserene atmosphere."

"You wouldn't be saying that if this werethe ski-ing,season."

"Perhaps not, but the fact remains that at thepresent time, you or your children canwander peacefully around here without fearof being run down by some drunken fooldirecting a motorized vehicle and poisoningyou with its fumes. To each his own Isuppose. Some people get off tearing aroundin autos - others prefer to stroll amidst theplentiful pleasures of Nature. It's all amatter of where you're at. Some dudes liketo hustle chicks in discothecs, some wouldrather sit back with their old lady and agood smoke and plug in Astral Weeks orMoondance at home."

"Yes I must agree that it would be a dullworld if all dogs barked the same. But I stillwonder what you do with yourself here, that is when you're not writing."

"God, there's so much to do that it's amatter of setting up priorities. There mustbe at least a hundred different well -markedwalks around here. You can climb up to thetop of the Mannlichen range at the back ofthe village, or you can go by cable car. Theviews from the top are magnificent. You canwalk across the fields and pick wildflowers:we've isolated at least two dozen varietiesso far. I've been taking slides and moviesand taping waterfalls, cow bells and Alpine

bird calls. There's just so many things to do.I've even got a nice crop of Sweet Peas com-ing on in the back garden. This plateau is agardener's Paradise. Have you seen the rhu-barb they grow here?""Indeed, I had two bowls for lunch beforemy blackberry yoghurt. You'll pardon me ifI seem too inquisitive and ask how youkeep in touch? Do you have any newspapersor magazines sent to you or do you listen tothe BBC Overseas Service?"

"Neither. In fact I just learnt about WillyBrandt's resignation in the German columnof Record World. I do not get the news andI'm grateful to be without it.""But surely a writer's inspiration must comefrom the daily events which engulf us all?""For some of us perhaps, yet in the words ofSir Robert Walpole, the 1st Earl of Orford:'The world is a comedy to those who think,a tragedy to those who feel'. (1769). I sus-pect that I've personally been plugged in toit for too damn long. The world outside ofWengen (and perhaps a few score acres downunder) has little to offer me.""Do I derive from your words some smallindication of those terrible cinders of cyni-cism? Could it be that you have seen toomuch and all of a sudden, you have realizedthe horror of it all?""You could well be right. But I find nosuch oppressive maladies in these gloriousAlps. Rather I discover some peace of mindby fully appreciating the insignificance ofman next to the mountains."

"Yes, this region tends to draw out one'sphilosophical yearnings. Goethe, the greatGerman writer, once compared the water-falls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley below uswith the fleeting human soul."

"I had heard that and I was thinking aboutthe other afternoon when we sat at thefoot of the Falls in the beautiful littlecemetery with the flowers growing on eachof the graves. The waterfall will continueflowing as long as man does not interferewith its natural course.""Indeed it shall and let us hope that thereshall be no such interference. Knowing theSwiss as I do, I believe we can be optimisticabout that. But pardon me for changing thesubject and again focusing on a personalmatter. It appears to me that you have cometo Wengen not so much to secure an escapefrom that which depresses you as much asto discover something new within yourself."

"You might well say that, I'll certainly admitthat I have been listening to the lion on occa-sion. I have found the elevation above sealevel to be remarkably conducive to new andbetter spaces. I believe I am now able tosee many things which were beyond myvision before. I fear that far too many of uscannot see the wood for the trees. We failto use our ears and our eyes and our reason-ing."

'

"No doubt, but that has been the eternalfolly of all mankind. You must not be tooharsh. We here in Wengen have our faultstoo. The council in Lauterbrunnen keepstelling us that we should build a road uphere and thus bring in more tourists. Weanswer that we prefer it the way it is, butthey reply that we cannot hold out progressforever. We Swiss are a strange race. TheFrench think us dull, the Germans think usboring, the British think us amiable. We donot enjoy an enviable reputation in sophis-ticated circles."

"But what nonsense that is! The Whole ofEurope is jealous of your neutrality, yourstable economy and your Natural assets. The irony of it overwhelms me. I canjust imagine some 18th Century warlordsdeciding to let the poor mountain folk havetheir mountains because it is difficult toforge fortunes and progress upon these monu-ments of Nature. And thus Switzerlandwas born: a country of mountains thatnobody wanted because they couldn'tfigure out how to amass fortunes from them. And now in the 20th Century, when thiscountry refuses to involve itself in theintrigues and invasions of Europe, it turnsout that the Alps are the ultimate touristasset. And not only that, the Swiss peopleturn out to be the most compassionateguardians of these treasures, and they havelearned to combine them with the few realfruits of progress. Such as this railway sta-tion in which we are standing. A cog railwayto the top of Jungfrau, a sacred outlookwhere men and women can face theirgods, whatever they may be. That is progress,in my book."The old man tapped his stick on the ironrails. "You may well be right," he said, pull-ing an old briar pipe from his pocket. "Ithink I hear the train coming. Are you travel-ling today, young man?""No, I just like to stop by now and then tosee what's happening down here. The scenereminds me of a brilliant movie I once saw- Closely Watched Trains. Do youunderstand?"

Members of Little Mountain Sound andStrongheart after taping "Candy Baby".

VANCOUVER SPAWNSTWO NEW LABELSVancouver, fast becoming a major recordingcentre, this week unveiled two new record-ing labels - Leo and Ubic Records. Thelatter is a division of Ubic InternationalCorp. Leo president Robert Johnston (seated)with I.C. Stone and his producer GeoffTurner.

Stone. Johnston has put out feelers to theinternational market on this single and isnow negotiating for the release of whatone NYC record exec tagged "a definitehit". The single was produced by GeoffTurner.Above singles were produced at Vancouver'sLittle Mountain Sounds studios, whichwhen completed later this year will, reportedly, be the largest recording complexin Canada.

GOODWIN SINGLE BROKEFIRST IN EDMONTONBefore too many programmers take bowsfor breaking Don Goodwin's initial singlerelease, "This Is Your Song" and establish-ing his image, ITV's Ann Stark would liketo set the record straight. It all happenedout of Edmonton, a market that influencesseveral major markets.

This week Goodwin's follow-up single,"Time To Cry" is one of the biggestselling singles in Canada and the topseller out of the Polydor camp. Again,Goodwin scored in Edmonton and, ac-cording to Stark, Silver Blue's president,Joel Diamond, heard about the Canadianaction, realized this country's potential asa springboard for the young Goodwin, andimmediately arranged for a cross -Canadatour for Goodwin with Polydor, distribu-tors of the Silver Blue label in Canada.

Goodwin has just completed anotherrecord session with producer Paul Anka

which should see a follow-up single"Help It Along" released in Canada beforethe action wanes on his current chart suc-cess. Although produced by Anka, thenext single by Goodwin does not qualityas CanCon.

The citizenship status of Anka has oftenbeen questioned. Distributors of his pro -

duct maintain that he is a Canadian citi-zen. However, it has been rumoured thathe is an American citizen. Whatever hisstatus, his ability to come up with hitproduct hasn't been deterred, althoughhe, and those using his material, wouldappear to benefit much more in Canada.

Ken Hardie reports from CFOB in FortFrances, Ontario that the Gentlemen ofRCA's The Lady & The Gentlemen arefrom Fort Frances and "are making a lotof Andrusco's happy down here". Naturallytheir is a lot of play on the album, particu-larly "Questions".There's another Hesketh on the radio newsfront. Kim, twenty year old son of CFRB'sBob Hesketh, presents the 5PM news threenights a week on CHYM Kitchener, Ontario. The elder Hesketh has been doing it at 'RBfor fourteen years.Paul Kennedy of CKDH Country, Amherst,Nova Scotia, finds it "amazing that GeorgeHamilton IV from North Carolina has re-corded another Down East LP. I don'tknow of another singer, Canadian or other-

wise, who has done one such album yet.The songs are mainly new, the writers areunknowns for the most part, but Georgemakes'them sound like winners".

Peter Stairs of CJCJ, N.B. would like hislisteners in Woodstock to hear "Rikki,Don't Lose That Number" by Steely Dan.Surrounding stations have the record, butsomehow CJCJ was overlooked.

CKSL Radio's Peter Garland, Bill Hall,Rick Murray and Andy Neill could be seenin various parts of London recently....mowing lawns. It was the end result ofCKSL's spring promo, "The Kindest CutOf All"

Andy Neill cutting winner's grass.

Recent promo trip into Ontario by SilverBlue's Don Goodwin, and arranged byPolydor resulted in a television taping atCHEX-TV Peterborough, Ontario. Good-win, currently happening with "Time ToCry" on Radio 98's chart is seen here withRick Allan of CHEX Radio. The TV clip, which also features Goodwin's new single,"Help It Along" will be televised later inthe summer.

There have been many changes in the musicprogramming policy at CHML resulting ina more current approach to both artistsand music. Many of the top hits have beenincluded in the daily rotation, and generallyspeaking, the station's musical sound hasbeen considerably updated.Promotion men changes in the Ontariomarket should be of interest to program.mers. Jim Macdonald moves from Londonto Capitol and Scoot Irwin exits Polydor.

...one thing in common.

Each of Canada's favorite entertainers has his own unique style, but there'sone thing these top performers have in common: Shure microphones. Con-sistent Gold Record winner Paul Anka and Juno award winners Ian Thomas,Edward Bear, and the Mercey Brothers all depend on Shure microphones ...along with other international greats like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin,Carpenters, The 5th Dimension, Charlie Rich, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty,Tom T. Hall, etc., etc., etc. For performers around town or around the world,Shure microphones sound great anywhere.A. C.
