FROM THE RABBIS STUDY Rabbi Sidney M. Helbraun Dear Friends, Last Sunday Debbie and I headed down to A Just Harvest on Paulina Street in Rogers Park to serve Easter dinner to the hungry. It was our third visit to this community soup kitchen, which is open 365 days a year. Located just a few blocks away from the Howard El, A Just Harvest is accessible to people from all over the city, which is probably why last year they served 54,000 hot, nutritious meals to those who came through their doors. I first learned about this organization from Debbie, who was looking for a mitzvah opportunity for our family to do on the JUF Volunteer site TOV. And each time we’ve visited, we’ve met other people from the Northbrook area who found them the same way. Some came to do a mitzvah project for their bar/bat mitzvah, but many others came just to lend a hand. It was during our second visit that I noticed that a local church was sponsoring the night’s meal. When I asked what this entailed, I was told that sponsoring organizations make an annual commitment to take on a certain number of meals each year. An organization agrees to purchase the food, cook the meal and provide servers for the evening. I also learned that there were only a few sponsorships still available for the year, and that the cost per meal is generally in the range of $400 to $600. With this information, I reached out to a number of Temple members to gauge their interest in this type of a project. Eventually a dozen of us gathered to discuss the logistics, and then the group moved forward on their own. They visited A Just Harvest and met with the staff, discussed the logistics of participating, asked the Temple Board for its approval, and then signed on to become a community sponsor. TBE’s night is the 5 th Thursday of the month which in 2017 happens four times, in March, June, August and November. That first date, the March dinner, went very well. Men’s Club and Sisterhood made contributions to purchase food, food was gathered, three of our members headed down to cook the meal with the crew at A Just Harvest, and 8 others arrived to serve. In the months ahead, TBE’s Hunger Team hopes to provide ways for our religious school children and their families, b’nai mitzvah students, and different organizations within the congregation to participate in different ways. At the same time, it is vital that we will continue to maintain our ongoing commitment to provide servers for meals at the Uptown Café. Each year when we gather around our Seder tables, the Haggadah instructs us to call out to our neighbors, “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Throughout my life, I’ve lived in neighborhoods where these offers found no takers; where hunger was not a frequent visitor. And yet, a short distance away there are many who are not so fortunate. This year I have an opportunity to make sure that some of those families are fed. And I am proud that our TBE community has taken on the responsibility to be partners in this holy act. Volume 232 May 2017 Iyar/Sivan 5777 3610 Dundee Rd. It is hard to believe that we are wrapping up our 2016-2017 school year! It has been an exciting year filled with learning and fun in the Slavin-Malkin Religious School. Students across all our elementary grades have participated in our Mishpachot program where they have spent the year rotating through a values-based exploration of Jewish art, music, drama, cooking, team building, and social action. Students in 3rd - 8th grades have also been enjoying our new Shalom Learning curriculum, and the use of the brand new furniture and Smart TVs in our classrooms. As I write this, our Education Committee members are just beginning a process of assessing all our new curriculum and changes. They will be interviewing students, parents, and

teachers to find out what they love and where we still have work to do. I am really excited to keep you all updated as we continue to make improvements to our religious school program. We have a number of exciting end-of-the-year activities that I hope you will all join us for. On Sunday, May 21, we have our closing day of school. Students will go to their classes as usual from 9:30 - 10:00 am. I invite all parents and grandparents to join the children from 10:00 -11:30 am for a fun day of mitzvah activities and our closing assembly. Our Confirmation and High School Senior Send Off service is on Friday, June 2. It would be a pleasure to see you all there as we congratulate our confirmands and send our seniors off in style. As always, feel free to be in touch. My door is always open, and I am here throughout the summer to answer questions, discuss concerns or just meet for a cup of coffee and a conversation.

DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING Mandy Herlich

Over the course of this year, Temple Beth-El has participated in a yearlong program of study about making synagogues inclusive for people with disabilities. The workshops were open to all; Temple Beth-El often had the largest representation of participants amongst the 20 or so participating congregations, having anywhere from 7-10 members attend, and we have benefited greatly from hearing the varied guest speakers, advocates, and panelists, and from learning together with other congregations. In addition to these workshops, Temple Beth-El was selected to participate in additional study through a small cohort, made up of 8 Chicagoland congregations, which met after each workshop and did some more personalized work and learning with Ed Frimm, an educational consultant from Pittsburgh. Because of Temple Beth-El’s participation in the cohort, we have had several meetings with Ed, who is helping to guide our work and helping to redefine our goals and push us to meet those goals in a timely fashion. Each workshop was themed – we learned about changing the culture of a community to be inclusive, and we studied best

practices for school and education as well as best practices for welcoming and including adults with disabilities. We learned about making worship and rituals inclusive, and we also learned over and over how to make inclusion personal and person centered in order to make our communities a home for all. I have personality benefitted from participating in these workshops as a clergy person and member of a congregation, but also from the planning process, as a member of the Synagogue Federation Commission’s Inclusion Program Committee, who planned and executed each workshop. While each session has been educational, and the planning process has been invaluable, the two greatest lessons that I have learned are: 1) This journey is a sacred partnership, and 2) Each person, regardless of ability is a unique individual and should be treated as such. While no one design will be right for each congregation or for each individual person, the important thing is to keep doing the work, to continually reimagine how we are welcoming people into the community, to make sure the community is inclusive, and to make sure that we are continually evaluating our goals for inclusion and finding new ways to invite people into our community. As Pirkei Avot says, “You are not expected to complete the work, but neither are you free to avoid it.” Let us continue to work together to ensure that Temple Beth-El has a bright future that is inclusive of all people.

Time is racing along for all of us at BJE-ECC at Temple Beth-El. With winter behind us, we are really enjoying our outdoor environment- running, biking, climbing, playing basketball and

building with our outdoor blocks. We will be celebrating Yom HaAtzma-ut, Lag BaOmer and Shavuot this month. We still have openings in our Parent-Toddler class and our Bonim (pre k) class. Please spread the word. We are very proud of our program, teachers and facility.

4 Membership/Sisterhood Update/Upcoming Events

Did you hear about the part-time summer job available at TBE? Do you know who was recently spotlighted by the TOV Volunteer Network? Did you see the photos or video snippet from the Purim Spiel? Did you see Mandy Herlich, our Director of Lifelong Learning, get a splat in the face with whip cream at the Purim Carnival? If not, be sure to follow the TBE Facebook page! This is a great

way to keep up on everything that is happening at Temple Beth-El. You’ll get current information as well as photos, videos, and other things you won’t see in the Bulletin or anywhere else. If you’re already following our page, but haven’t seen any posts from us in your feed, be sure to go to our page and “Like” one or two of the posts already there. Unfortunately, Facebook assumes you don’t want to see our posts if you don’t like, comment, or share them over time. If you have any questions or need help setting this up, just let me know at [email protected] and I will send you instructions.

On May 21, the Sisterhood is sponsoring the Blanketed by Love mitzvah project for the last day of Sunday school. Please join us from 10:00 - 11:00 am, and bring a sharp pair of scissors. Fleece and instructions will be provided. Joanne Gold and her daughter Rachel created Blanketed by Love (BBL) in memory of Joanne’s father to provide handmade fleece and crocheted blankets for people in need. It only takes about 15 minutes to make a soft, cozy blanket for someone who could use a hug and the comfort of knowing that people care. Adults are

welcome and encouraged to participate. BBL has donated more than 1,100 blankets since July 2015 to hospice patients and their surviving children, cancer patients, children’s hospitals in two states, Ronald McDonald Houses in three states, a student food pantry on a university campus, homeless individuals in transition centers and those living on the streets, the ARK, Jewish & Child Family Services and many other facilities. BBL and Temple Beth-El have begun providing blankets to Jewish hospice patients at JourneyCare in Glenview. The response to all of these blankets has been tremendous; people so appreciate that someone they have never met would do this for them. It is definitely a Tikkun Olam project. Any questions or comments? Please email me at [email protected].

Meet Marty Pomerantz: “I believe we need to ensure that our Jewish Community survives to continue to be that place to educate Jews and non-Jews on the power of community” This article is the eighth installment in a series of discussions with donors to the Legacy & Endowment (L&E) Program. Its purpose is to share insights about their connection to Temple Beth-El and why their generous support of the L&E Program is important to them. In this article meet Marty Pomerantz, a Wheeling resident, President of TBE, who shares his thoughts with our membership.

1. Can you give us some background on your connection to Temple Beth-El? When my parents moved up north my cousin was President of Temple Beth-El so they joined. When we finally decided to join a

temple we had been coming to Temple Beth-El and just felt like it was a much nicer environment than the temples closer to our home.

2. What are some of your most meaningful memories as members of the TBE community? For me it is about watching my children connect to Judaism. Purim Carnivals, Purim Schpiels to Shabbat services and the high

holidays. It is building a strength and pride in being Jewish in both of my kids. That is something that I feel and truly want my children to feel as well.

3. Why did you take a leadership role in the Legacy and Endowment program? As a member of the board for quite some time, we have a lot of conversations about how to attract more members. We have had

some good success with our recent membership promotions and I believe we need to do something to insure the survival of our congregation. People should not have to ask if they can “afford” to be members of a temple. We should welcome everyone at whatever they can afford. The Legacy & Endowment program can help us to achieve that goal.

4. What difference do you think your gift will make to the future of TBE? Every little bit helps. The more we can donate to the long term survival of Temple Beth-El the greater the chance we have of

being around forever! 5. What advice would you give to others who are considering making a gift to the Legacy and Endowment program? I would recommend thinking about Jews in the world today. Jews have been persecuted forever and there doesn’t seem to be an

end in sight. I think it is very important, while we may not feel it in Northbrook, to have a strong community to turn to when you face anti-Semitism. I believe we need to insure that our Jewish Community survives to continue to be that place to educate Jews and non-Jews on the power of community.

6. Please share any other thoughts and insights (a sentence or two) about your relationship with the TBE community and

the importance of your L&E gift to the congregation. While I don’t have a longstanding relationship with the temple, I have been very active since we got here. I believe that survival

of Judaism comes from being proud of being Jewish. The pride will always make Judaism a priority in your life. That priority needs a place to flourish and I believe Temple Beth-El is that place.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

Elaine Cooper Koffman

Social Action Committee (SAC) member Stewart Schram leads an event at CJE SeniorLife’s Robineau Residence once a month. Our next visit there will be on March 22. On Purim, my husband Ben, granddaughter Tewa, and I delivered a shalach manot plate of goodies for each of the people who live at Robineau. Temple Beth-El’s junior choir will be singing at Robineau on April 30 at 2:00 pm. SAC member Marcia Kanarek coordinates the TBE volunteers who help at the birthday parties that take place at CJE SeniorLife’s Gidwitz Place on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:15 to 3:15 pm. To participate in this good deed, which is appropriate for children of all ages, please call or email Marcia (847-826-1954 or [email protected]). TBE’s Uptown Café volunteers on Thursday, March 23 will be Doris Guthman; Susan, Noah, and Sam Harrison; Phyllis Kaplan; and I. Our other Uptown Café dates for 2017 are all on Sunday mornings: May 21, July 16, and September 3. Volunteers, who must be at least 12 years old, work as servers from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Sundays. Please call or email me (847-679-8525 or [email protected]) to be a waiter/waitress at the Café.

On Sunday, February 26, my friend Dr. Natasha Stonova and I helped TBE’s fifth grade religious school students make Purim cards for our Yad L’ Yad partners in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Natasha taught the children to sign their names in Cyrillic and I took photographs of the children with the cards they made.

Dr. Michael Oshtrakh, the leader of the Jewish community in Yekaterinburg, made a beautiful poster of the cards and photographs and emailed me pictures of the children there looking at the poster and of the “Happy Purim” poster they, in return, made in English.

The SAC “sold” containers of food for the ARK at TBE’s Purim Carnival on March 12. Both the food and the $137 collected were warmly received at the ARK. Thank you to SAC members Joan Freud and Stewart Schram for your assistance.

The members of the SAC invite you to join us in our efforts to help “repair the world.”

TEMPLE BETH-EL FUNERAL PLAN Temple Beth-El has a funeral plan for our members with David Jacobson at Chicago Jewish Funerals, Ltd. The plan includes the use of our sanctuary for your services or the use of the Chicago Jewish Funeral chapel, located in Buffalo Grove and Skokie. Chicago Jewish Funerals offers you the opportunity to guarantee current fees by funding a pre-need plan. If a death occurs, please call the Rabbi first and then David Jacobson at 888.509.5011 or 847.229.8822. If you would like to have a booklet mailed to you, call the Temple office 847.205.9982.

TEMPLE BETH-EL CEMETERY Our Temple’s cemetery is located on Pulaski Avenue, just north of Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago. We still have plots available for sale. Contact the TBE office for more information. If you are interested in a plot at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, contact Mike Rubenstein at 847.668.2724 or [email protected]

SUPPORT ISRAEL BUY ISRAEL BONDS - Need to purchase a gift for a special occasion? Are you unsure of what to buy? Why not purchase a 5-Year Mazel Tov Savings Bond? Prices begin at $100. Pick up an informational sheet at the Temple or log on to israelbonds.com. Mention Temple Beth-El on your form. Questions? Contact the Israel Bond Office 312-558-9400.

BUY ISRAELI GOODS - Maimonides taught us that the highest form of helping people is to support them so they can help themselves. A great way to do that without incurring any additional costs is to make the purchase of Israeli products part of our regular shopping. Israeli products that are readily available from local merchants include food, wine, women’s apparel, fashion designer jewelry, baby and child apparel, hardware, health and beauty aids, footwear, toys and games, flowers, and more! Available products, and the local stores that are likely to stock them, can be found at: www.buyisraelgoods.org (BIG).

Did you Know……SHALVA Collects Cellphones? For quite a few years, Temple Beth-El has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA. We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. The phones are collected, then shipped to Shelter Alliance, a recycling operation in Florida. They pay SHALVA according to the “blue book” value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones sent to them every year, they wipe clean all personal data and either refurbish the phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $4,000-5,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program, so, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

TBE Monthly Tzedakah Collections A tzedakah box is located in the lobby just outside our Mishkan. Tzedakah for May will go to GreenFaith, TBE’s environmental initiative program. Checks should be made payable to Temple Beth-El and mailed to the Temple office marked “tzedakah.” As always, we thank you for your continuous and generous support.

Remember A Loved One

If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is a memorial plaque. This permanent remembrance will give you great comfort for many years and will serve as a reminder of the place your loved one held in your life. A permanent memorial plaque is displayed bearing the name and yahrzeit date on the Memorial Wall outside the Sanctuary. Your loved one’s name will also be included on the weekly yahrzeit list outside the Sanctuary on the anniversary of their passing and be read at our Friday evening Shabbat Service. The contribution to memorialize your loved one with a permanent yahrzeit plaque requires a donation of $750. If you have any questions, please call Joanne Gold (847) 205-9982 ext. 202.
