TWO MONTHS INTO THEHURRICANE SEASON -BE PREPARED ANDMAKE SURE YOU HAVEA PLAN IN PLACEOn June 1, 2014, we officially entered thehurricane season, and from mid-to lateAugust we will be entering the most activepart of the season. It is important to beprepared during hurricane seasonbecause it can help keep both you andyour family safe. The 2014 hurricaneseason as mentioned started on June 1and will end on November 30, 2014.According to the National HurricaneCenter, the peak of hurricane season goesfrom mid-August to late October. It isduring this time that most tropicalcyclones form in the Atlantic Basin. It isimportant to note, though, that dangeroushurricanes can happen at any time duringhurricane season. It is important that ourarea, as well as all Texans, prepare forhurricanes by staying informed, creating adisaster plan and following necessarysteps to keep their families safe. Whenhurricanes make landfall or get close toland, they can affect the lives ofthousands of Texans along the coast andacross the State of Texas. There arevarious tips on being prepared in case ofa hurricane. Some of the tips include thepreparation of a family disaster plan. Afamily disaster plan includes planning forhazards that could affect your family aswell as home. Vulnerability to stormsurge, flooding and wind should be

reviewed. You should locate safe roomsor places in your house to store items if ahurricane hazard develops. It is importantthat families determine evacuation andescape routes from your home and placesto meet in case of an emergency. Also,have an out-of-state friend as a familycontact so that all family members have aplace of contact. Don’t forget to plan fortaking care of your pets in case of anevacuation. In addition, families need tocreate a disaster supply kit. The NationalHurricane Center suggests that yourdisaster supply kit should include suchthings as: Water, one gallon of water perperson per day for at least three days, fordrinking and sanitation, Food, at least athree-day supply of non-perishable food,Battery-powered or hand crank radio anda NOAA Weather Radio with tone alertand extra batteries for both, Flashlight andextra batteries, First aid kit, Whistle tosignal for help, Dust mask to help filtercontaminated air and plastic sheeting andduct tape to shelter-in-place, Moisttowelettes, garbage bags and plastic tiesfor personal sanitation, Wrench or pliersto turn off utilities, Manual can opener forfood, Local maps, Cell phone withchargers, inverter or solar charger. Livingalong the coastline also means preparingfor hurricanes by retrofitting your house. Itis important to strengthen the outside ofyour home so wind and objects do nottear openings in your roof or walls. Somepeople may want to find out about floodinsurance. The National Flood Insuranceis a pre-disaster flood program designedto reduce flood disasters. The NationalFlood Insurance program can be called at

1-888-379-9531. In addition to gettingyour family, pets and homes safe andprepared, there are various state websitesfor hurricane preparedness andevacuation, including telephone numbers.Some important contacts include theTexas Statewide Road Conditions whichcan be called at 1-800-452-9292. You canalso go to my website which will provideyou links, websites to various sources forhurricane preparedness, planning for anevacuat ion, t ips on hur r i canepreparedness as well as state and federalgovernment resources. Also, if you areelderly or disabled and need hurricaneevacuation assistance, you can call 2-1-1. This service will assist you in hurricaneevacuation. Another great source to helpwith your hurricane preparedness is theNational Hurricane Center (NHC) whichcan be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov/ . Onthe NHC site you can find additional tipson hurricane preparedness, hurricanetracking charts, and up-to-date reports onweather activity occurring in the AtlanticBasin, along with many other things.Overall, being prepared for a hurricaneand living in a coastal region is veryimportant. Hopefully, this will continue tobe a quiet and safe season.
