Not a Healey Story

- Helmut Friedrich

I thought I would write an article about my Hawke DL2A Formula Ford. While it isn’t a Healey, it is a British car.

Formula Fords originated in England in the early 1960s to provide affordable race cars for race schools, but soon migrated to a single seater series for aspiring Formula 1 drivers.

The first, stand-alone race took place at Brands Hatch on July 2, 1967 with a field of 20 cars evenly split between Lotus 51s and Russell Alexis cars. The original cars were powered by the 1498cc Ford pushrod engine found in the Cortina GT. Ford agreed to provide the engines for 50 Pounds, which was 15 Pounds less than retail. As the engine evolved to 1600 cc, so did Formula Ford. By the following year six additional manufacturers started building cars including a company called Hawke Race Sales Ltd. owned by David Lazenby.

David Lazenby was Formula One legend Jim Clark’s mechanic in 1963 and was on the team when Jim Clark won the Indy 500 in 1968. By the end of that year he left Lotus Cars, first to produce close-ratio gears for the Renault gearbox, used in the Lotus 51s. He also started work on his own design of a Formula Ford, which he was building for the man who owned the premises he was working in.

In 1968, he built one prototype, the DL1. In 1969 he built 28 DL2s, in 1970 54 DL2As, and in 1971, 27 DL2Bs were produced. Lazenby continued to build Formula cars until 1978.

My car is a 1970 DL2A, serial number AM40. It is powered by the 1600 cc Ford engine,

producing 112 HP. The power is transmitted through a Hewland racing transmission, which allows you to quickly change gear ratios to suite individual track configurations. The 112 HP and the fact the car weighs 950 pounds provides for some exciting racing. My car runs in the vintage class, but new Formula Fords are still being built and raced today, with the primary builder being Van Diemen.

Dyrk Bolger’s Classic Motorworks Vintage Weekend, August 9 and 10 at Gimli Motorsport Park is an excellent

excuse to exercise your Healey and view some exciting racing

A few weeks ago I was looking at an article about Geoffrey Healey and then it dawned on me, don't we have someone in our Club that looks just like him? Is this a coincidence or what?

Ted Moorby shared these “Before” photos of Tom Pearson’s (TDC) 1959 Sprite in November “on its way to being smooth and shiny…”

And at the end of January we received these photos and update from Ted. Freshly painted and ready for reassembly when he and Debora return from Palm Springs in April. Hope to have it ready for the MCMG Show & Shine at The Forks in July.

Cars for Sale

- Ted Moorby

This winter Cynthia and I were fortunate enough to get away to four different sunshine locations. The first was a week in Mexico with the Hawley’s followed by a week in Florida with the Lanoway’s then a week in Indian Wells California with the Pearson’s and lastly a week in Phoenix with the Ramsay’s and McMillan’s.

Tom and Debora Pearson own a condo that they refer to as their ‘little piece of paradise’ in a gated community in Indian Wells. Indian Wells is to Palm Springs sort of like Tuxedo is to Winnipeg. Tom had planned an action packed week for us which included a day for he and I at McCormick’s Collector Car Auction [while the girls spent the day at the spa].

McCormick’s Auctions are sort of like a smaller version of Barrett Jackson held twice a year in Palm Springs. We went to the ‘free to public’ Friday of auction # 56 Feb 21st. The entire auction took place over three days. The Saturday

and Sunday cost $15.00 to get in. The 500 plus cars up for sale were all parked in the sun in a secure lot next to the big tent that they held the auction and beer sales.

We spent a very interesting few hours walking the grounds looking at the cars and talking to owners. There was a very cool mix of American hotrods, antiques and custom cars along with a significant number of foreign [about 25%] sports cars and collectables. Over 400 of the cars actually sold and lots of them went through with no reserve. The thing that really surprised me was how cheap the late 90’s ‘executive’ sports cars went for. You could have driven away in a rust free low mileage Jag or Mercedes for way less than 10 grand.

Here is a list of some of the sales:

1996 Jag XJ6 Vanden Plas $6,825

1998 Mercedes 500SL CVT $6,405

1960 Austin Healey 3000 BJ7 $32,025

1974 Triumph TR6 $16,800

1952 Austin A40 Sport $23,625

1974 Jensen Healey $6,300

1968 Jag 1 ½ E Type $70,875

1960 Austin Healey Sprite $23,888

You can go to McCormick’s web site for more of the results.

If I am fortunate enough to get to this auction again next year I might bring my wallet. Thanks again Tom!

March Tech Session: Getting

Suspended

- Rick Unrau of TDC

March 12th saw the 3rd installment in our 2014

Triumph Drivers Club / AHCM tech session trilogy.

Entitled “Getting Suspended”, the tech session was led by Ted Moorby and was another well-attended event with 25 guys gathered in my garage. I have to say it is always gratifying for me to see the garage filled with others who enjoy our hobby!

As you might guess from the title, we were looking at suspension issues; specifically front suspension and front end alignment. Using his collected experience gained from many different restorations, Ted took us through the geometry of various Little British Cars and discussed the specific advantages and problems of each variant. We looked at how each of the different designs use camber (negative and positive) and castor (why and how much).

Ted also covered kingpins, trunnions, ball joints and bushings. We also spent time learning how to assess the overall condition of any suspension system and specifically how to check the detailed aspects of a front suspension.

Using my Spitfire we had a look at how to do an at-home-version front end alignment. To do this: start with a level floor, drive straight in, check your tire pressure, check the relationship between your front and back check camber, look at your tie

rods, etc.

It was all informative and useful info and frankly it was fun to learn about the different front suspension designs.

Thanks to Ted for another fabulous tech session. It’s actually kind of mind boggling how much we covered in one night. Let’s do it again soon.

FOR SALE: Club 25th

Anniversary T-Shirts

Unlike the 10th Anniversary T-Shirt that was produced in extremely Limited Edition (actually a grand total of two were ever produced and both are still known to exist, although rarely seen in public), the 25th Anniversary are out and available for purchase for $25.00 each for club members and $30.00 for non-members.

The 25th Anniversary T-Shirts are in only one colour, British Racing Green with the artwork in light grey and the Club logo on the left sleeve in the same colour. They are 100% Combed Cotton made in the USA by American Apparel, which means that they are high quality but their sizes are likely one size smaller than what you would regularly take; so if you are a Medium, then order a Large.

Contact Jean Caron by phone or email to purchase.

Saturday Morning Breakfast

Drives

- Jean Caron

The Club Calendar in the newsletter has been updated with the locations, times and details of each Saturday morning breakfast drive.

For most of the locations, we will meet somewhere beforehand to be at the location for 9:30 am. In one case the place opens only at 10:00 am so check all the details under each location so there are no surprises when the appropriate date comes up. While this is an Austin-Healey Club promoted schedule, members of the TDC and Mid-Canada Mini Clubs are all welcome. If you cannot be at the meeting location, you are more than welcome to meet us at the breakfast location
