VOLUME 26 BLAST 9 www.marinyachtclub.com October 2009 Commodore’s Scuttlebutt As my penultimate Bugle column as Commodore, I will in this column note that in some respects our Club has had a great year, and in others it has been a very difficult year, and I would like to pay special thanks in this column to those who have helped us so much through the difficult times, and I apologize if I leave someone out or don’t fully describe their roles: Dora Madeiros - Thrown into the all-in-one acting food/beverage/office manager role suddenly in January, Dora displayed exemplary loyalty and dedication to the Club by being there, planning the menus, replacing staff as needed, improving food storage hygiene, and delivering a much improved quality of service and cuisine to the dining room in a gracious welcoming manner. At times it was overwhelming, but she did her best, and we are grateful. Linda Castaldo, Dana Schaberg, Karen Burnworth, and Carol Clark all worked above and beyond the requirements of membership or call of duty, even though at the time none of them were members! They all helped tremendously in the office with the Club’s books, records, and general office/ membership/business needs particularly in January and February, sometimes spending all day in the office. Justine Fairey and Bob Schaberg - Given the difficult circumstances in which the Club found itself in January, I could not have hoped for more solid, insightful, loyal, helpful, and smart flag officers. I, and the Club, owe them big time. The whole Board of Directors. To them, I give thanks for their intelligent, consistent and thoughtful support. On a less serious note, but so important, our Club cruise to Coyote Point Yacht Club in September was great, all very ably organized by Bob and Mary Beth Wheeler. The fact there were only seven boats on the cruise is probably indicative of the fact that we had never cruised there before and had no idea what to expect. The location is first rate, located in a San Mateo County Park, complete with an adjacent golf course and museum. Next year more of us should plan to go. Coyote’s members are friendly and helpful. A particular highlight was that the Saturday we were there was International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so we all had a great time talking like pirates, with most of us in costume. Possibly the best costume award would have to go to Bob and Sylvia Edwards who were dressed as Somalian pirates. Imagine them in dreadlocks and armed with toy plastic machine guns. Great fun! Until next month. Commodore Jim Purvis

Commodore’s ScuttlebuttAs my penultimate Bugle column as Commodore, I will in this column note that in some respects our Club has had a great year, and in others it has been a very difficult year, and I would like to pay special thanks in

this column to those who have helped us so much through the difficult times, and I apologize if I leave someone out or don’t fully describe their roles:

Dora Madeiros - Thrown into the all-in-one acting food/beverage/office manager role suddenly in January, Dora displayed exemplary loyalty and dedication to the Club by being there, planning the menus, replacing staff as needed, improving food storage hygiene, and delivering a much improved quality of service and cuisine to the dining room in a gracious welcoming manner. At times it was overwhelming, but she did her best, and we are grateful.

Linda Castaldo, Dana Schaberg, Karen Burnworth, and Carol Clark all worked above and beyond the requirements of membership or call of duty, even though at the time none of them were members! They all helped tremendously in the office with the Club’s books, records, and general office/membership/business needs particularly in January and February, sometimes spending all day in the office.

Great fun!

Until next month.Commodore Jim Purvis

Port Captain’s Report Emergency Ladders

In the past few weeks there have been two incidents of accidental immersion. (They fell into the water.) In both cases the victims were able to climb back on the dock by using our bright yellow ladders.

Hats off to the member s of the Harbor Committee who built them.

Everyone should be aware of the location of these ladders. There are some areas in the harbor where obstructions prevent the installation of a ladder. However, in those areas there are several boats with swim ladders at the transoms that can be used.

Electrical Inspection

The Harbor Master is inspecting every dock-side power pedestal to insure that it meets the latest Marina electrical standard. Any pedestal found to be defective will be taken out of service until it can be corrected. Alternative power will be available and the boat owner will be asked to participate in the switch.

Secondly, the Harbor Master will inspect the boat’s power cord for any leakage into the water. High levels of leakage can be fatal to swimmers, divers and accident victims. Should any vessel exceed the safe limits of this leakage, the owner will be immediately informed by phone and by mail. In the case of potentially fatal leakage, the boat will immediately be disconnected, and the consequences will be dealt with later.

For clarification the AC leakage is not related to galvanic corrosion. Zincs must continue to be maintained to protect your under water metal.

Please call me if you have any questions.Don Lesley, Port Captain

Message from our Vice Commodore

As many of you know, I had cancer surgery and nasty radiation treatments this year.

My recovery has been way slower than I had ever thought possible and therefore I am not able to follow on as your Commodore in November.

Bob Schaberg has graciously stepped up to fill my shoes, with the other prospective flags being Noel Diefendorf, nominated as Vice Commodore and Lee Cordner nominated as Rear Commodore. What a great team you have for the coming year!

As much as I would have liked to be a part of it, I’m truly not healthy enough to do the great job that I had intended, and that the Club deserves, so I am stepping back for a while.

One of the best things we accomplished this year has been the hiring of our new General Manager, Ben Yamanaka. Bob Schaberg and I have known Ben for many years at the STFYC where he has always done an amazing job, bringing true managerial skills, honesty, and countless years of top notch food and beverage service, harbor management experience, and an extremely positive attitude. He will be a tremendous asset to the Marin Yacht Club. We look forward to having our Club open more days for our membership and the delivery of a great dining room experience to which our members will be proud to bring their families and friends.

Please feel free to continue to call or email me with your ideas and suggestions. We want to make Marin Yacht Club the very best!Cheers, Justine

Membership Committee Report The summer sale on initiation fees along with the Car and Boat Show, and the hard work of the Membership Committee did a great job of attracting new members to the club! Please help us welcome the following new members. Their photos will be up on the website soon.

This gives us a total of 20 new members this year, which isn’t too bad considering the economic situation. Many of the new members have boats they will be keeping in our harbor. Look for them around the club and say Hi! They are a great bunch of new members.Lee Cordner

Entertainment Report“Spooky” How time flies....

Here we are already in October. By the time you read this, our October Fest dinner and last Patio BBQ of the season will be behind us. The entertainment committee is focusing on a fun Halloween Party scheduled for October 30. We hope many will join us for a good dinner, music and, of course you should come in costumes! Prizes galore. Check out our flyer and What’s Up on the Dock messages for more details.November will be fairly quiet for the entertainment committee as we get ready for the holidays. Then it is on to decorating for the holiday season. Next month we will share our plans for the rest of year.Janet Holt, Entertainment Chair

welcome the new board with a celebration. Look for your invitation which is coming soon!

Commodore Jim Purvis will turn over the reigns to the new commodore, flag officers, and directors. Great food and music is always part of the evening, and it is a wonderful MYC tradition with the formality of a black tie event.

Also, please make certain you cast your votes on the new ballots sent to you in the mail. This year’s proposed slate of officers include:

Continuing on the board as Directors for the second year of their terms are: Rich Schmidt and Karl Goldberg.

We look forward to seeing all members at this traditional, important, and special event. Come, celebrate another MYC year, and have fun! We appreciate your support.

John Samuels Captain Fast RegattaOn our first race of the newly re-named John Samuels Captain Fast Regatta, we encountered steady winds in the 22 knot range and gust up to 28 knots. As in the past 16 years, this is a friendly non-spinnaker MYC club race. Sailed around Red Rock and The Sisters, this 8.7 nm course is just 25 minutes from our harbor.

The emphasis is on participation, and this year we had 3 new boats join us, Cherise Petker on Leaping Lizzard, Mike Sweeney on Marilyn, and Paul Clark on Charisma, who had a main sail pull out from the mast in the high winds at the start. Also on the race course was Ron Witzel on Harpoen, Latham Woodward on Wind Dancer, and myself on Sobrante. The Three boats that will have their names on the new trophy board for the next year are: Aidan Collins on Miss Demeanor in first place, Val Clayton on Gypsy Lady in second place, and Art Lang on Xanadu in third.

I would like to thank Don and JoAnne Lesley on Intrepid as our committee boat along with the great crew of Frank and Carol Hall, Scott Baxter, Mo Witzel, and our guest of honor, Dodie Samuels.

Thank you all for coming out on this very windy day.

Paul Descalso, Racing Chair

Landscaping Committee Workday - October 3rd

Since some of you are going to be at the Club for fueling on the 3rd, and even those that are not going to be involved in fueling, I thought it would be a great opportunity to have you join me for a morning of Fall pruning, weeding, whacking,

all those good things, to end of the season before we start all over again next year.

Since the growing season is coming to an end, hopefully this effort on the grounds will last so we can enjoy the grounds for the Winter and Holiday season.

The entertainment committee is putting on their famous lunch on the Boyd Patio, so you can reward all your good works doing landscaping with a great lunch with friends and family.

Be sure and bring your gloves, favorite garden tools, and I look forward to seeing you!

Lee Essayan, Landscape Committee Chair

Tennis News from Coach JadeSummer is almost behind us, but we still have a couple of months of good weather. Just a reminder that the pool will close on October 31st.

Our Fall Marin Mixed Season has started and what a start! Our 6.0 team pulled up a win against Rolling Hills with a 6-4 result.

Our 7.0 team had a little trouble pulling it out, but ended up with a tie against Lucas Valley with a 5-5 result. Way to go guys! Since all matches are played on weekends, all players should please check the schedule posted at the club for court availability.

Team practice is set on Mondays from 5 to 7pm, and all courts are used.

On October 18th, we will be back in time with an old fashioned Mixed Tennis Tournament. What does it mean? First, all players will use wooden racquets only; and second, players will have to wear white only. The

After the tournament, Chef Jade will grill hamburgers and hot dogs, and serve wine and beer. Please call to sign up for the tournament, BBQ, or both. Coach Jade will collect $2 from members and $4 for non-members for prizes. BBQ will be charged to your account.

Please call to reserve your spot!! If you don’t have a partner, let me know and I will find you one!
