Leaving the seaside cliffs and redwood forests of Mendocino for the summer to go to a remote wilderness cabin in Alaska has become our lifestyle for the past thirteen years. We leave

behind supporting friends, a beautiful home and garden, and all the amenities, from electricity and hot running water to telephone and Internet. We pause as we ready ourselves to fly to Anchorage, asking if we are up to this adventure another year. The answer is clear as once again we board the four-passenger floatplane that takes us into some of the most spectacular unspoiled wilderness in America, hundreds of miles from the nearest human enclaves. The magnificent land with its glacier-filled valleys, turquoise lakes and wild rivers, rich with brown bear, barren ground caribou and grey wolf, becomes our second home. Observing the interconnected lives of wildlife in an untrammeled wilderness draws us north each summer.

The single engine floatplane, so common in “bush” Alaska, touches down on pristine water, avoiding the last chandler ice. The milky glacial water we saw on our departure from Twin Lakes last fall has settled to the clarity of a rare blue jewel under winter’s ice. We look around at mountains that are streaked with deep snow and know the slopes will be changing daily before our eyes, from brown to green. A quick look through the spotting scope lets us know the golden eagles are again active at their cliff-side nest across the lake. We discover three torn window screens and boards torn from the outhouse, reminding us we are back in the land of the pesky black bear. The new damage to the outhouse elevates our alertness.

Standing next to our four-month supply of provisions on the shore of Twin Lakes, fingers wrapped together as the floatplane ascends, we pause again to embrace our deep connection to each other and to this place. Our souls fill as we warm to the awareness of the preparations we must make now for our long stay. We set to work.

Knowing a bear may claim our food at any time, we remove Dick Proenneke’s canoe from inside “Spike’s Cabin” and haul our supplies into its safety. Spike’s Cabin, a roughly constructed seasonal sport hunter’s log cabin, built before this was a national park, is our home for the duration of our stay here. It measures 11 ft. X 15 ft. and has a gravel floor, two small, screened windows, and a screen door to let light in, while holding some of Alaska’s famously huge mosquitoes at bay. A galvanized garbage can buried in the gravel floor is our refrigerator and a solar shower hung from the ridge log affords our bath. We haul cold, pure water in buckets from the lake with no fear of Giardia. A recycled solar panel hooked to a 12-volt battery charges the many batteries we use for cameras, cordless drill and two-way radio communication. K’s old kayak and our feet

take care of all our transportation needs. There are no roads within a hundred miles, and trails are maintained by the creatures that make this wilderness their home.

We are sometimes asked what it is like to live in the silence of wilderness, but wilderness is not silent. The refrigerator does not start and stop nor are there the other sounds of a Mendocino home or the road outside. There is no lawn mower at Twin Lakes and only a hand saw for cutting our cooking and heating fuel. But the wilderness is full of sound, and deeply listening to those sounds is one of the avenues into learning about and understanding what is all about you. You start to identify not only what bird is calling but what the call means and what to turn your awareness toward. To travel safely in wilderness you keep your ears, your eyes and your nose alert to what is about you. It becomes second nature and you feel alive through every cell in your body, with an elevated awareness.

As volunteers for the National Park Service we greet the six hundred visitors from all corners of the world who come yearly to see Dick Proenneke’s cabin at Twin Lakes in Lake Clark National Park. Dick Proenneke was arguably the closest thing to a Henry David Thoreau of the twentieth century, except Dick lived over a hundred miles from Anchorage and thirty miles from his nearest neighbor for thirty-one years. He came to Twin Lakes at fifty-one years of age, in 1968, to see if he could build a finely crafted log cabin with only hand tools and ‘be content with his own company for an entire year.’ Dick Proenneke arrived as a rugged, meat eating, Alaskan outdoorsman, except for his journaling and filming. On his cabin wall is a small, framed question he wrote: “Is it proper that the wilderness and its creatures should suffer because we came?” Being at Twin Lakes changed Dick. He shot a sheep and a caribou during his early years at Twin Lakes, but then never shot another big game animal, even though he did remain a meat eater. He began to think of the wildlife as his friends and his neighbors. Dick continued to catch fish and occasionally ate a porcupine when he heard the porky gnawing on his cabin. Proenneke’s daily journals of his first year at Twin

Untouched wilderness, like this view of Twin Lakes Big Valley Shangri-La, has pulled them back to Alaska for thirteen years.

to meet them, from black and brown bears, to wolves, to eagles. With the bust of the caribou herd and the subsequent plummeting of predators, our study has morphed into a broader understanding of the animals in the area, their relationship to each other, their environment and plant communities in a time of dramatic change. As the climate warms we are watching timberline rise up the mountain slopes with forest taking over what was traditionally alpine tundra.

Over the years we have found and returned to more than a dozen fox dens, many of which are ancient dens with dozens of entrances. Each of these dens has been occupied by at least three different

mammals at some time during our study. The mammals that we have observed at these dens include wolves, foxes, river otters, black bear, porcupine, and ground squirrels.

I had dreamed since childhood of finding and watching wolves at their den. Just finding a den and watching wolves in this vast, four million acre national park was the outer limit of my dream.

Coming back to the area of our wildlife study each year is never coming back to the same place because the observations we are able to make this year are ones that we had not developed the awareness to

make a few years earlier. A fox traveling through our camp is no longer a random sighting. From its slight limp and the condition of its fur, we now recognize her and know it to be a parent with kits at a den. It is carrying no prey so it is traveling from its den to find food for its young. Tracking faint clues in the opposite direction from the fox’s travels, we found six kits playing and fighting outside of the den. This was a rare time that neither adult fox was bothered by our presence. We sat for twelve days, once through the entire night, recording special moments rarely seen.

Every year our return to Twin Lakes is with new eyes, new awareness of sounds and smells, more depth of understanding with each observation. This summer we found and videotaped the active nests of bald and golden eagles, gryfalcon, merlin, Pacific loon, Arctic tern, Barrow’s goldeneye, least sandpiper, and close to a dozen small songbirds.

A two-and-a-half-inch downy feather-lined Lincoln’s sparrow nest with five tiny eggs pulled at my passions of wilderness awareness. This little hen, weighing only half an ounce, had flown thousands of miles from Twin Lakes to someplace, perhaps, like Little River last fall. Certainly she had lived through rain and windstorms that would give the hardiest of hikers pause. She had found food to eat but without doubt survived lean times where even her tiny body lost mass. She had avoided the claws of falcons and the teeth of foxes. She had wintered far south and then flown north, seeking cover from tree to tree. Her nest was only two feet from a pond’s edge in a recess in the tundra. The hen sparrow had plucked white downy feathers from her breast to keep her eggs warm.

We watched a mew gull fly along the edge of the pond using its sharp vision in search of small, inexperienced fledglings to feed its own chicks. Every moment of the little sparrow’s life is fully engaged in living, while balanced on a razor’s edge of survival. I am reminded of the movie Winged Migration, the filmed life of migrating swans, geese, and ducks. I stretch my imagination to what a camcorder on the forehead of the hen sparrow would have seen. We now understand that it is not just the Lincoln’s sparrow, but that all wild creatures live every moment in this same way, fully engaged in life, while balancing on the razor’s edge of survival. How can we not be in awe when imagining the lives of each of nature’s animals? How can we not be humbled and inspired to leave space for each to survive?

Lakes, edited into the book One Man’s Wilderness, became an instant classic of living in the Alaskan wilderness. Proenneke filmed himself building his cabin and later worked tirelessly photographing and filming the wilderness and wildlife around Twin Lakes for the National Park Service. His efforts helped to create Lake Clark National Park with Twin Lakes at its heart. The video Alone in the Wilderness is one of several that chronicle his life. Dick Proenneke did all he could to see that Twin Lakes would be left for future generations to experience wilderness untouched by humans.

K and I were drawn to this remote part of Alaska decades ago, and separately met Proenneke in our wilderness travels before we met each other. When we did meet, there was an immediate recognition of our similar values, concerns, passions and commitments, which led eventually to our marriage. During the 1980s and nineties, K taught school and had been a mentor teacher in several Yupik Eskimo villages west of Twin Lakes. She met Proenneke while volunteering during summers for the National Park Service, inventorying plants in remote locations throughout the park. I heard of Dick when I was building a trussed log bridge on Lake Clark and then hiked seventy miles to meet him at his cabin on Twin Lakes. I remember thinking that I would like to live my life like Dick but not by myself. In 2000 Dick Proenneke was no longer able to live at Twin Lakes. The National Park Service asked K to stay at Twin Lakes to watch over Dick’s cabin and asked me to consult on what should be done to restore the structures. I completed the restoration of the Preonneke cabin, cache, woodshed and three other small log cabins used in support of the Proenneke site using only hand tools as Dick had done. Each summer I maintain all of these structures and replicate a few of Dick’s handmade belongings that have been taken to the park archives for safer keeping. Using only hand tools, I have replicated Dick’s ladders, chairs, cargo snow sled, saw horse, snow shovel, and ice crampons, always doing my best to have the replicated item look and feel like Dick had used it for thirty-one years.

K first fell in love with my eleven-year-old daughter, Chelsea, who had come with me the year Dick left. It was our similar values, passions and commitments that led us to Twin Lakes and it

is there that K and I now explore and model an ethic for wilderness travel and wilderness management. We have written and spoken countless times, contributing to the new twenty-year management plan now being formulated for Lake Clark National Park by the National Park Service. Twin Lakes is where we meet like-minded wilderness travelers who help us develop strategies to protect wilderness for future generations. Honoring Proenneke’s legacy for Twin Lakes means keeping this wilderness free of human-made trails, public use cabins, rock fire pits, and trees cut down for campfires.

Dick’s cabin attracts those who have seen his video on PBS. Numerous people every year choke up when they tell us what it means to them to visit Proenneke’s cabin. Many visitors are hikers or kayakers who fly to some location within the park and paddle or hike to the Proenneke Cabin as part of a wilderness camping experience. With these people we discuss how to travel in wilderness while leaving it untouched. Leaving no trace is not enforced; it is a learned wilderness ethic.

In addition to our Proenneke site duties, we hike in the wilderness for a month each summer, studying, filming and journaling the interrelationship of wildlife. As biologists, we decided to conduct a wildlife study of twenty-five square miles along the Chilikadrotna River that drains Twin Lakes. The study began in 2002 by watching the tens of thousands of caribou that traditionally migrated through this area annually, along with documenting the predators that came

Monroe filming. Much time at Twin Lakes is spent filming and journaling about the wildlife they find and study.

Finding a wolf’s den became a passion for Monroe and, when they finally did discover one, they have gone back

to film and observe it for the last seven years.

years of age, I counted red salmon on the Kvichak River for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Forty-nine million red salmon returned from the Pacific to the Kvichak River that year. The Kvichak and Nushagak can remain productive for untold future generations if the Pebble Mine is stopped. The toxicity of huge mines like the Pebble Mine has no place within the drainage of earth’s pristine rivers.

The Mendocino coast was at one time a wilderness of not only the tallest trees in the world, but also salmon that locals my age recount running so thick in the water “you could walk on their backs.” Wholesale liquidation of the redwood forest with no stream protection is largely responsible for the near total destruction of silver salmon as well as the extirpation of marten and other species. The depleted landscape no longer supports its logging and fishing potential, nor the diversity of its original wildlife.

We hope that sharing our Twin Lakes experiences will help to change logging practices in Mendocino forestlands to restore these forestlands and salmon spawning habitat. We are aware that we are briefly carrying a torch before passing it to a future generation, and we feel privileged to dedicate our lives

to these efforts between our two treasured homes.

A sparrow fleeing the claws of a sharp-shinned hawk at our Little River home startled K and me and reminded us of the little Lincoln’s sparrow hen. We hold a deep awareness that wildlife along the Mendocino coast may be the same wildlife we observe in the wilderness of Twin Lakes. Months before leaving for Alaska while driving along Highway 128, a golden eagle feeding on a dead deer caught my attention. It was likely migrating north and would soon be feeding its new hatchling on a barren ground caribou calf or Dall sheep lamb. Every year we await Erica Fielder’s observations of grey foxes denning under her cottage on Ten-Mile River, including the foxes’ interconnected lives with striped skunk, California quail, and bush rabbits.

Returning from living in nature at Twin Lakes each year, human connection to the natural world is deeply etched in our souls. How we live our lives along the Mendocino coast and the overwhelming effect of human alterations of nature where so many people live can obscure one’s awareness of our connections to the natural world, and certainly even more so in more highly populated cities and areas. Stories of wildlife along the Mendocino coast are as awe inspiring as the lives of their wilderness cousins in the far north, perhaps even these same birds living their summer near the wolf den. An awareness of human connection to the natural world brings clarity to our vision of the Mendocino coast. We hope the experiences and knowledge we bring back with us will be a teaching and an example that helps others understand and live more closely in tune with nature, as well.

Every year king salmon and red salmon return to the Chilikadrotna River to spawn in the area of our wildlife study. They have swum several hundred miles from the Pacific. The salmon have helped sustain both wildlife and humans every year since an early hunter lost his spear point sixty-five hundred years ago near the wolf den

where we found it. The valley of the wolf den drains into the most productive wild salmon river in the world, the Kvichak. The Kvichak, along with the river that the Chilikadrotna River flows into, the Nushagak, account for 30 percent of the world’s wild salmon harvest annually. These two river systems will change forever if the world’s largest open pit gold and copper mine, the Pebble Mine, is opened in their headwaters. In 1965, at nineteen

October, 2012Fri. 10/05Mendocino Stories and Music SeriesOur local musicians love to play music together, in infinite combinations. Mendocino Stories and Music Series will feature two such collaborations. All ac-complished musicians in their own right – sassy and original Sue Sisk with Rick Banker will open for “The B Team”—Richard FienBop, Buddy Stubbs and John Bush with special guests. The B Team brings a guitar driven mix of old faves and original tunes in a rockin’ alt country ska folk reggae blend with a hint of afro pop just for flavor. Joining them are percussionist Clau-dia Paige and whiz studio guitar player Bobby Cutler. Sue Sisk’s original tunes reflect her influences through ballads and jump up blues boogies. Her sideman, Rick Banker on guitar and vocals adds his lifetime love of the blues. All ages welcome. $15–$12 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a bistro menu and full bar. Music starts at 7:30 p.m.Mendocino HotelMore information: 937-1732 or www.mendocinostories.com/events.html

Sat. 10/06Mendocino Stories and Music SeriesSinger/Songwriters-in-a-row: featured musicians are Denny Lunsford, Sue Sisk, Steven Bates and Gwyneth Moreland. Each will play original tunes, taking turns in the row. Denny Lunsford is the lead guitar player with The Gatecrashers. His solo CD, Moonflowers, was released in 2003. Sue Sisk could always sing the blues. Her original music is also influenced by gospel, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, from moving ballads to jump up blues boo-gies. One of the coast’s most active musicians and Fort Bragg native, Steven Bates started playing music at school dances by age thirteen. Gwyneth Moreland grew up in a household with no TV, CD player or junk food. That lifestyle resulted in a young woman who values the simple things in life and reflects it in her music. All ages welcome! . $15–$12 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for dinner menu and full bar; reserve a table in advance at $15 per person. Music starts at 7:30 p.m.Hill House InnCall Pattie at 937-1732 or www.mendocinostories.com/events.html

Sat. 10/06Mendocino English Country Dance Support your community dance events this year by coming and joining in to keep them active. Get some exercise, enjoy your friends and neighbors and dance some beautiful dances. Very lively music by “Take A Dance” English country dance orchestra, the house band for the Mendocino English Country dances. Sup-port your local dance events by coming out and danc-ing! Calling and instruction by dance leader Elizabeth Zekley. English Country dance is fun, relatively easy, community-oriented dancing with live music. Country dancing is all about the community dancing together. It can be simple, doesn’t have to involve intricate steps—you’re basically walking. You and a partner are dancing with another couple, then you move on to an-other couple. For it to be successful you need a lot of people and you’re all working together; the whole com-munity is moving in time to music. At its best it can... be transcendental. You definitely are lifted outside yourself into a feeling of fellowship and community. All dances are taught. No partner is required. Beginners are encouraged to participate. No special dress is re-quired. Please bring potluck snacks and beverages to share during the break.$10 admissionNewcomer instruction at 7:30 p.m.8:00 p.m.Caspar Community Center

Sat. 10/06World Championship Abalone Cook-offAbalone Cooks, this could be your year to be named the first-ever World Champion Abalone Cook! Abalone cooks are invited to compete in the 2012 MAPA (Men-docino Area Parks Association) World Championship Abalone Cook-Off. The event is held in memory of Ken Tallman, founder of the MAPA fundraiser and in honor of the Tallman family of Subsurface Progression Dive Shop. The World Champion winner will receive a tro-phy. Even more, the three traditional Grand Prizes will still be awarded; the three winning booths may enjoy eight days and seven nights at a private villa in the Yucatan, donated by the Subsurface Progression Dive Shop and the Tallman family. Also, MAPA will award $1,000 to each Grand Prize Winner that they can use for their transportation to the Yucatan. Other prizes will also be awarded. The odds of winning a prize are excellent because competing abalone cooks have ap-proximately a one-in-ten chance of snagging the Grand, and a one-in-thirty of winning the World Champion Abalone Cook Trophy. “If you believe you have a great

recipe, then you could be our next winner,” says Chris Anderson, the Abalone Committee Chair. “But MAPA only has room for thirty abalone cooks at the Noyo Har-bor location, so people need to register before we are full.” As of this date only 14 cook sites are available. If you don’t cook abalone but love to eat it and want to help MAPA and parks, then we invite people to be an Abalone Cook-Off Judge, where they may taste up to ten delicious wild abalone recipes and vote for your favorite dish. There is also wine and beer tasting, live music by the Bayou Swamis, a silent auction, craft fair and raffle. For more information on being a competing cook, or for abalone tasting-judge tickets, please contact MAPA at www.mendoparks.org, [email protected], or 937-4700.

Sat. 10/13Pattie Jam: Benefit for Mendocino Stories and Mu-sic Series ProducerLocal musicians will join together in a benefit for Men-docino Stories and Music Series producer Pattie De-Matteo, to help defray the cost of her illness. Pattie was diagnosed with curable cancer in March of this year. With a jumpin’ bluesy house band—Johnny Bush, Phil Dunn and Jamie Gilliam - many special guests will ap-pear, including Lenny Laks, Richard Fienbop, Sue Sisk, Marcus McCallen, Denny Lunsford, Tommy Brown, Johnny Blanco, Buddy Stubbs and special guests. Les Tarr will MC. Lenny Laks: “Mendocino is a community that needs lots of music ... music makes us come to-gether and groove. Providing this music is a lot of work and is always overlooked. Pattie does this ... so we can say thanks for the hard work.$20 suggested donation at the door$25 per person for reserved table seatingDoors open at 6:30 p.m.; dinner menu and full bar. Music at 7:30 p.m. Hill House of MendocinoThe Mendocino Stories retail shop will be open with CDs, books and Ukulele Fever T-shirts. Sat. 10/26Mendocino Stories and Music SeriesBringing you an evening of acoustic music, featuring singer/songwriters Danny Barca and Nancyjoy Evans. Each will perform one set, with original tunes inspired by the lovely area we live in. After playing and singing for years in a variety of bands, Danny Barca woke up to his true passion – writing and performing all original songs. Above: K and Monroe’s daughter Chelsea at the cabin. Each year, in addition to visits by a few intrepid friends, about six hundred wilderness travelers from all over the world come to see

the cabin and explore the park, and may be greeted by K and Monroe. Below: Filming

Multi-tasking, wilderness style: Monroe holds a fishing pole in his teeth as he paddles a canoe on the pristine waters of Twin Lakes. The float plane that brings them in can carry only so much weight, meaning a four-month supply for their life there includes only the barest essentials. Fish caught in the lake are an important source of their daily food.
