STOP!!! While you are ahead – the riderBy Kathy Richardson

Recently, while on one of many of the Facebook instructor pages, I read what was supposed to be a joke regarding why lesson students need counseling. The gist was hearing “One more time”, “One more 20 meter circle”, etc. The comments listed underneath were long, with many variations of the same theme. Not once did I read; “Stop! Great job! Let’s move on to something else!” Or, “We are done for the day! See you next week”. All I thought was, how frustrating for the rider.

I have a 6 year old student who has been challenged from her very first lesson. Her love of horses is deep, she is eager, and wants to learn, but it takes time for her to process and retain each step. We do a lot of review each week, and at times it feels as though we are not making any forward progress. In addition to learning how to work with my horses, she has been learning to ride my simulator, Sheena. (*See online article). Each riding lesson has been spent working on correct hand and body position, while transitioning from walk to whoa. Each time, I have had to push the stop button to help her because she begins jerking on the reins, when Sheena doesn’t immediately stop. Jerking, or hard pulling, turns the bit sensors bright red. She knows red means she would be hurting the mouth of a real horse and does not want to do that. We have worked on being smooth but the concept kept eluding, and consequently, frustrating her.

Recently, she came for her lesson and it was a “Sheena” day. 20 minutes into her 1 hour lesson, she had an” ah ha” moment and for the first time stopped Sheena all by herself. The gait transition was beautiful! The bit sensor did not light up; her stop was smooth, and her body position was nearly perfect.

My first inclination was to ask her to “do it again”. Instead I stopped myself and told her the lesson was over for the day. She was quite surprised and asked why. I told her she had done such a good job, I wanted her to think about how it had all come together, to take that good feeling home, and bring it back for next week’s lesson. I told her we would go spend some time with the horses who had been kept in for the next lessons.

Off to the barn we went, where Cheerios, Angel, Ghost, and Pearl were in their stalls, waiting for their students to arrive. She spent a few minutes interacting with each of them, helped me fill the feed balls with hay, for my pony and minis, and gave them their evening meal. Then the lesson was over.

I received a call later on that evening from a member of her family. The only thing my student talked about, on the way home, and for the rest of the day, was how well she did, and how she stopped Sheena without “hurting” her. That child was on Cloud 9, as was I.

My student came yesterday for her first lesson following her great success of the previous week. She had awakened early that morning, was dressed and ready to come for her lesson 3 hours early. For the first time, she wanted to help tack and prepare Sheena for her lesson and was proactive instead of waiting for me to ask her to help. She displayed an enthusiasm I had not seen before. I was told she had spoken all week of nothing else but her great success at her previous lesson. She had a perfect practice whoa and another perfect whoa after we worked a gaming pattern. Then, she was done and the lesson was over. She insisted on un-tacking Sheena all by herself and knew exactly where all of the tack belonged. She was able to carefully put everything away.

So, to all of you instructors, the next time you think about asking for “one more circle” or “one more time”, why don’t you say” Good job” and STOP while you are ahead. Make your student’s day. It will make yours too.
