PRESIDENT’S PAGE – FEBRUARY 2015
It is quite a challenge to have been pitched into the “hot seat” at short
notice! In its wake has come the responsibility to make a contribution to the Newsletter, so here goes!!
The best feature of President Don’s sudden confinement to hospital has been his return to better health and his presence in the workshop. We wish him well and look forward to his continued improvement and activity in the club.
A big thank you to all those members who gave of their time and use of their equipment last Saturday (24
th Jan) when the club grounds were given a
much needed face lift. It looks so much better! Also, many thanks to those who helped clear the container, re-stack and store timber that had accumulated since the last clear-up. It’s quite amazing how ‘things’ collect and finally get in the way such that clearance and removal becomes an imperative! Thank you Alex for removing and carting the timber from the container to store in your shed.
Once again, it has become apparent that the machine room and its equipment appear to have been used out of hours. The dust collection system and certain attendant machines have been found completely blocked and left choked with shavings, and furthermore, the doors have not been closed/locked nor the security alarm properly set. Obviously, these circumstances carry serious potential consequences for the Club and all its participants. Members are reminded that if you require to use the workshop out of hours, you may do so provided the following procedures are followed:
You obtain the help of a supervisor (2 people are required in the machine room for safety reasons). Phone the President OR Secretary to obtain their permission, giving the date and time of your intentions. Sweep up and empty shavings bin(s) after use. Close and lock all doors and set the alarm system upon departure. These measures are intended to protect all members and their assets. Your co-operation is earnestly sought. Preparations for the Wood-show over the March long week-end are well
in hand, thanks particularly to Len for his orchestrating the organisation of the Show and to Greg for managing the raffle again this year. I hope your individual “show-pieces” are also progressing well.

DEMONSTRATION – PERRIE BULLOCK
Perrie demonstrated the use of his homemade
Scissor Clamps (otherwise known as panel clamps, or table
clamps). The clamps are made from aluminium “U” shaped
rails drilled with holes along the lengths as anchor points for
the clamping mechanisms, allowing different size panels to
be accommodated. These clamps are particularly useful for
gluing up table tops and panels for a variety of projects.
The demonstration consisted of clamping approx. 10 pieces
of dressed pine about 150 mm wide and 20 mm thick
together to form a pine panel. The aluminium rails work to
keep the board aligned as clamping pressure is applied to
the edge and the face of the boards simultaneously with the
scissor action of the clamps. It is important to have
protective strips both on top and bottom of the panel to
prevent marking the boards. Adjustments can be made to
the edge of the boards with either a mallet or “G” clamp
before cranking the clamps as far as they will go.
Thanks Perrie. Chris Harvey

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS
Welcome to Junior member Jayden Thorne who joined the club in January,
we hope that he enjoys being a member and learns lots of new skills. Also
welcome to Ben Eliason, grandson of Roy Eliason, who has joined.
SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY Long Hair
OH & S regulations state that anyone with long hair must wear a hair net or hat
which covers the hair – simply using a hair band is not enough. If you have any
doubts of the concerns, then Google “Hair caught in machinery” and you’ll see
plenty of examples of such accidents.
With that in mind, the Committee have bought a small supply of disposable hair
nets for members to use.
The Club has also obtained a selection of Chipper Caps which are for sale at $5
each. The added advantage to the Chipper Caps is that they are washable and they
do stop a lot of dust in your hair as well.
Chipper caps are available from the office.

MOOROOPNA LIONS FARMER’S MARKET
Sunday 18th January, 2015
Six of us Woodies assembled and set up at Mooroopna Lions Craft Market.
Jan was busy burning decorations and names on Rollers, Bats, Glenda took
control of toy and raffle sales, Len, minus his bookie stand and loud hailer
spruiked like a baby magpie about to be fed. This left the turning up to Chris,
Neil and yours truly.
New member Lou joined the crew and buzzed about like a blow fly in a space
suit. It’s great to see our new members embracing the challenge.
All up approximately 50 names burnt on items, 3 books of raffle tickets and one
toy were sold.
Thankyou to all involved for their efforts, not forgetting Vern who, after trekking
to Benalla with Carl on Saturday morning, helped me to cut blanks for turning on
Saturday afternoon. Greg Thorne
FRIDAY NIGHT SEGMENTED TURNING
Please note Don Mc wishes to advise that the Friday night Segmented Turning
classes will not resume until after the Woodshow.
HAVE YOU LOST SOME CLOTHING?
On tidying up the timber racks Saturday 24th January, a few items of clothing
were found. Please see if they might be yours. Keep the place tidy!
SOLDIER BEETLES A couple of weeks ago we were inundated with thousands of flying beetles.
They were on the ground, and flying up to the small Eucalypt tree which was flowering,
they were landing on the cars parked out the side door area. Willis said that some that
were on the back of his ute canopy were still hanging on when he got home to Tatura.
On Googling Soldier Beetles, you can find out quite a bit about them. They must lay
their eggs in the ground and then emerge out. They are in the same family as Fireflies
although they do not have glowing backsides.
We seem to get their arrival every year.
