A special event for Student Teachers was held at QF-Mishawaka on November 4th. Students spent time with members of the QF Repair Staff learning some basics of woodwind, brass, and string repairs. These young teachers soon realized that it’s very likely they will be asked to repair an instrument before they teach their first note! In addition, a special presentation by Wayne Stubbs, r ecently retired
superintendent of Concord Schools, provided keen insight into resume preparation and job interview tips. Other topics included “The Business of Music Education” and more.
A similiar event will be held at our Burr Ridge location on Tuesday, February 23rd from 8:30am-
4:00pm. Lunch will be provided and the event is free to any current student teacher or interested college student. Student Teacher Day is open to any interested college Music student. If you know of a recent graduate, please pass the word along to them too!

in Burr Ridge. Doc’s celebrity sta-tus was high-ly apparent from the many re-quests to sign record al-bums and pose for pic-tures with our guests.
On Friday, as a guest of
Dan Farris
& Robert
Sullivan,
Vince provid-ed an out-standing Master Class for the trum-pet studio at Northwestern University. Vince’s ap-pearances were also co-sponsored by S.E. Shires.
Friday evening, Doc performed In Con-cert with Vince and the Q&F All-Star Concert Band at Lincoln Way Central High School in New Lenox. A standing-
room only crowd was treated to a world premier piece and a rousing performance with the Faculty Big Band. For high-lights, see Pages Eight & Nine.
“Keeping Pace” with
Doc Severinsen
Legendary Trumpet artist, Doc Sev-
erinsen visited the Chicago area for three days in November. His appearanc-es were co-sponsored by QF and S.E. Shires (Custom Brass Divison—
Eastman Music Co.), maker of the Desti-no III Trumpet. Doc first provided a master class at VanderCook College of Music on Wednesday, November 18th. He was joined by his long-time friend, Vincent DiMartino, the Dean of Trumpet Teachers. Their session touched on a variety of subjects but they
particu-larly en-joyed playing duets in the (yet to be complet-ed) per-
formance venue—Phase II of the new building.
The next day, Doc per-formed with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band, di-rected by
Doug Beach.
The gig drew a large audi-ence thanks to the work of Dr. Pete
Griffin. Doc and Vinny also found time to visit with fellow trumpet artist (QF Advisory Board member), John
Hagstrom of the Chicago Symphony.
Later that evening, QF hosted a VIP “Meet & Greet” event

Encore! By George Quinlan, Jr.
The “Encore” performance of the Q&F All-Star Concert Band will remain a vivid memory for me forever. Doc Sev-erinsen is 88 years old. He simply de-fies nature! To perform at such a high level, meet a demanding performance schedule, and be so cordial to the stu-
dents and fans is simply...remarkable!
Approximately 30 years ago, we had the bright idea to form an honor band to perform with a world class artist. The first “gig” was with Ed Shaugnessy, legendary drummer in the Tonight Show Band starring Johnny Carson in 1986. The following year, saxophonist Ernie
Watts peformed with the Q&F All-Star Concert Band. It seemed like a long-shot, but in 1988, when the Tonight
Show was at it’s peak of popularity, the band, led by my father, performed with the World’s Greatest trumpet play-er and late-night celebri-ty, Doc Sev-
erinsen. The event was the “cover story” of the very first issue of Quarter Notes too...printed on a state of the art dot-matrix printer in 1988!! Knowing the concert series could never be sur-passed, the Q&F All-Star Concert Band retired...until 2015 - twenty seven years later! We thank the folks at S.E. Shires (Custom Brass Division of Eastman Mu-sic Co.), Lincoln Way Central HS, the Faculty Big Band, and our outstanding conductor, Charles Staley for an amaz-
ing Enore performance. Bravo!
Buffet is celebrating 190 years making high quality instruments in France. I was fortunate to be part of a small USA contingent invited to attend a special concert in Paris on November 23rd featuring some of the fin-est musicians in the world. Our group was treat-ed to a tour of the workshops as well and honored to sign “the 190
Wall” in the workshop for their Anniver-sary guests. Buffet showed considerable strength to proceed with the events fol-lowing the horror in Paris just a week before the concert. The celebration was an important step in the healing process
for our French partners.
We are excited about the new Middle School Band Camp being offered in 2016 by Music For All at their Summer Symposium. QF will be supporting the effort by providing a program called “Get on the Bus”. A chartered bus will pick up students and directors at various locations including Valparaiso to transport them to the camp at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Camp Dates
are June 27-July2.
We also look forward to seeing you at the Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois state
music educator conferences this month!

Cleaning for Marching Brass Instruments
Looking for a great way to protect your
marching brass instruments AND stretch
your repair budget?
During the months of January and Febru-ary all marching brass instruments will receive a school discount of 20% on ul-trasonic cleaning. Are you familiar with this process?
Ultrasonic cleaning is the most modern and simply the best method of brass in-strument cleaning. Replacing antiquated acids and chemicals, an ultrasonic ma-chine uses sound waves to clean your sousaphones, mellophones, and marching brass instruments. The ultrasonic process is environmentally friendly and safer for our technicians and your students. It is the most thorough and efficient method.
Your instruments will be picked up, ultra-sonically cleaned, lubricated, restored to good playing condition with new corks and felts and returned to your school by your QF representative. Dent removal, silver hand-polishing, etc. can also be provided at additional cost to restore the beauty of your brass instruments!

Congratulations to CCSD 93 (Bloomingdale/Carol Stream) for the start of a brand new string program! The new orchestra will supplement the fine band program led by Sherri Steinke,

See you at the Midwest
Clinic!
Lloyd Palmiter, our Str ing Specialist, br ings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clini-cian and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the William Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral work-shops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call
his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world!
Quinlan and Fabish Music Company is proud to offer the Jay Haide line of violins, violas, and cellos. Like many instruments we carry in this price range, all Jay Haide instruments are hand-made of quality seasoned maple and spruce and have a tone quality and workmanship normally found in those costing much
more.
The new Jay Haide à l'ancienne violins, violas, and cellos are brought to you after years of development. The varnish is a new formulation, carefully applied and beautifully antiqued giving each instrument the patina of age, so desired by both musicians and connoisseurs. And, they are as beautiful tonally as they are visually. The Jay Haide à l'ancienne, as viewed here, has been designed for the advanced student and professional who needs an instrument that will complement
and enhance their artist potential.

A special “shout out” to the northern Indiana teachers for the outstanding Orchestra Festival hosted at Chesterton HS recently. It was great to see Susan
Ellington back on the podium along with Cindy Schnabel who returned to the podium from recent retirement. Impressive work by all the directors with a deserving mention of the excellent intonation I heard from all the ensembles in both group rehearsals and the sectionals. I tell my chums around the country how I am lucky to be among so many talented teachers who not only know how to organize, but, more importantly, know how to demonstrate and model good intonation at the early levels. It was refreshing to watch you all at work.

The division is being coordinated by Keith Ozsvath, band director at Rotolo Middle School in Bata-via, and Greg Scapillato, band director for Northbrook School District 28. Both Keith and Greg are deeply familiar with Music for All and the Summer Symposi-
um, having attended the camp as high school students and
having served as SWAG Team members (counselors and teach-ing assistants) as college students
and young band directors.
“I am very excited that middle school band students will now be able to experience the same posi-tive energy and amazing educa-tional environment that the Sum-mer Symposium is known for,” says Ozsvath. “These students will make music, new friends, and lasting memories while learning from outstanding educa-
tors.”
“This is a big win for middle school band programs every-where!,” says Scapillato. “A nat-ural ‘next step’ for the Symposi-um, this camp is uniquely posi-tioned to foster both the growth of the young band student and
