A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

This is a sparse issue, but it was a very busy month.

We had OASIS 29 on our old weekend. The energy as

usual was good. We need to do some planning for next year.

Megacon happened and I went there for a day to see

friends and went to two panels.

I did spend a lot of time at the Orlando Fringe Festival.

There were not as many Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror this

year as there was last year. Here were the few that I saw.

• The Rocky Horror Pole Show - The group really had some

great moves and routines. I wish they had more time so I

could do/hear some of my favorite call backs.

• The Great & Powerful Tim: Magic to the Future - Tim

uses the plot of Back to the Future for his magic show. It

fun and delightful.

• Future Legend - Tod Kimbro plays an alien who sings

David Bowie songs. That is all you need to know. It was a

celebration of all things Bowie. Thank you.

• Who Me - David Tennant looks a lot like Rob Lloyd.

Lloyd's subconscious puts Doctor Who on trial. Does it

make Rob a bad person his love of Doctor Who. The

audience/jury gets to decide. This is a journey through one

man's fandom. It shows how it effects us. Thank you Rob.

• The Devil - He tries to deceive us and promotes certain

questionable politicians. Pay careful attention to his

supposed origin story, it seems fishy. From the same mind

that gave us God is a Scottish Drag Queen we got a funny

look at the most famous fallen angel of them all.

• Man From Earth - John Oldman is moving on from his

successful professorship for mysterious reason. A few of

his colleagues come to his house to say goodbye. Who is

he? Can he be who he claims? See the argument played out.

This was in the Living Room alternative venue at Fringe. A

perfect setting for this show. Based on a story Jerome

Bixby, prose writer and wrote the episodes for Star Trek

Letters of Comment

May 19, 2017

Dear OASFiSians:

I have Event Horizon 353 with me, and I know you are all at

Oasis 29, either going crazy running the show, or enjoying

yourself, attending it. Our big annual anime event is next

weekend, so I am getting this done now before my own crazy

times arrive.

I think many of the guests at Megacon will be at the big Fan

eXpo coming up in August in Toronto. Meat Loaf was recently

in Toronto shooting a huge video, and I believe Tim Curry will

also be coming.

As I study the final ballot for the Hugos, and even the Stoker

Awards, I know I have been left behind, and no number of

podcasts is ever going to get me caught up. I also am getting e-

mails to hurry up with my Anthony Award nominations, but that

won’t happen, either. I did not nominate for the Aurora Awards,

as I felt myself to be an unqualified nominator. I suspect I will

probably vote once the final ballot is released.

One other thing I did was look at Lady Business (Blog)

recommendations for short fiction. Some of this was online and

could be read for free. I read a lot of short fiction during

Christmas time. Some of what I read made into award ballots.

Our own vendor activities…we were vending at CostumeCon 35,

and because we were stuck in the lower level of the con, out of

sight, sales were poor to non-existent for just about everyone. We

also did a hotel flea market, and sales there were poor as well.

Next weekend, as I write, is, as mentioned above, our big anime

event of the year, Anime North. There, sales should be good. If it

isn’t, I would have some doubts about the salability of our

merchandise, and whether or not people have the disposable

income to buy at cons any more.

Forty years of Star Wars…when I moved to the west coast of the

continent from Ontario in 1977, seeing this new movie called

Star Wars was one of the first things I did. It is hard to believe

that in just a few months, it will be 40 years since I first was

captivated by that amazing little movie. I look forward to each of

the Episodes…I did not see Rogue One, and only saw it as

Disney’s indicating they were in charge, and they would put in

front of us anything they wanted to make. I will wait patiently for

Episode VIII.

Anyway, time to go. I hope you are enjoying the con, and I will

be enjoying a long weekend here. See you with the next issue.

Yours, Lloyd Penney.

Nebula Award Winning Writer Jeff VanerMeer

did a talk and signing at Rollins College on May

27 to promote his new novel Borne and discuss

environmental issues with writer/environmental

journalist Amy Green

Deb recommended Sole Summoner by Elicia Hyder.

Timeless got a reprieve from cancellation in lieu of a

shorter season.

Meeting adjourned at 3PM.

(Continued from page 2)

(“Mirror, Mirror”, ”By Any Other Name”, ”Day of the

Dove”, “Requiem for Methuselah”)

• Alive: Music for Night of the Living Dead - The group

Modern Robot gives the classic horror film the score it

deserves. It matches the mood and action of the scenes.

• Phantasmagoria's Wickedest Tales of All - A child brings

our favorite troop of storytellers to spin their tales. There is

also a tale from India. Delightfully spooky.

• Something Strange - An improve group gets a setting

from the audience and tells a story that is like an 80 SF/

thriller film. This performance was set in Slimy Fjord, FL

and some D&D playing teens had to stop a bad force from

taking over. Great fun!

Jeff VanderMeer made an appearance in Orlando a

week after OASIS.

Next month the AFO Report and maybe a review.
