POSITIVE PARENTING NEWS
Positive Tools For Getting Your Kids To Listen Positive Labels Children are highly susceptible to the words of their parents. You probably remember words of your own parents said to you in the course of your own childhood. Labels (adjectives that describe personality) often have the most potent effect on a child’s development. For example, a parent calls his/her child ‘lazy’, the child absorbs this label into his/her permanent self‐concept. The label starts to influence the child’s behaviour and he/she starts to act like a ‘lazy’ person. The more the label is used the more ‘lazier’ he/she becomes. “But he/she is lazy” I hear you say. While this may be true, the negative label won’t help the child. It will in fact increase the problem behaviour because it is being reinforced. The child’s self‐concept needs to be organised around successful behaviours. How could you approach the ‘lazy’ behaviour in a more positive way? Maybe try a response like, “Hey you’ve got tons of energy ‐ use your energy to get out of bed right now and get going!” Every time the child displays a lazy behaviour, remind him/her that they have lots of energy. The child will eventually see him/herself as someone who has lots of energy as the word works on his/her conscious and subconscious mind. Try to change the negative to positive:
Instead of, “You are being rude/disrespectful”, try, “You
need to speak more respectfully to me before I can
listen”.
Messy becomes ‘neat and ‘clean’.
Dirty becomes ‘clean’ and ‘shiny’.
Loud becomes ‘quiet’.
Selfish becomes ‘generous’.
Careless becomes ‘careful’.
Late becomes ‘on time’ or ‘prompt’.
Try this: Imagine your child as a grown up. Write down 20 words that you would like to use to describe their personality (i.e. kind, generous, creative, organised, talented, smart etc). Whatever words you choose, try and use at least one of them daily when speaking to your child/children. Good times to incorporate this is when praising your child or when correcting his/her behaviour.

DEVELOPING READING SKILLS NEWS
How to Encourage Reading at Home: Explore Books – visit the local library and/or bookstores. Give your child as many opportunities as possible to find books and topics that interest them. Be an Example – Let your child see you read whether it is a newspaper, magazine, recipe or book. Think aloud regarding interesting facts, information, characters and your thoughts and evaluation of what you read. Make it Fun – Read with your child and discuss certain books, comics, articles. Research a range of interesting topics and complete book activities together. Pick “Good Fit” Books – A book that is a “Good Fit” book meets the following requirements: Is there an interest / purpose for the reading? Can your child understand and retell the story? Does your child know most of the words?
