St. Barnabas Strives to Be a Permission Giving Church

Is there a ministry or activity you’d like to be part of at St. Barnabas but it’s not being offered right now? If you are interested in an activity, chances are that someone else is, too. Any time is a good time to join a group or to start a new one. If you have an idea for a new small group or fellowship activity, please contact Pastor Wayne or Pastor Amber and they will put you in touch with the Small Group Leadership Team who will work with you to get it started.

ELCA World Hunger is a connected, comprehensive, and compassionate program that helps individuals and communities lift themselves out of poverty into self-sufficiency. Through our giving and caring, through our advocacy and action, we make a life-saving difference. The international work of ELCA World Hunger is carried out with several trusted partners, notably Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). Because of these long-held connections to partners around the world, ELCA World Hunger efforts are efficient and effective. ELCA World Hunger is a comprehensive and sustainable program that uses multiple strategies—relief, development, education, and advocacy—to address the root causes of hunger and poverty. ELCA World Hunger responds to neighbors around the corner and around the world. One way this happens in the United States is through domestic hunger grants. Gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal total over $20 million each year. Out of each dollar

December “Gift of Love” for ELCA World Hunger Appeal

contributed, over 70 cents goes to international hunger relief and development work. Over 90 percent of every gift provides direct support for our church’s hunger ministry; less than a dime is used for churchwide administration, fundraising, and communication. ELCA members support Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran World Federation through their gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. About 60 percent of the ELCA World Hunger budget is channeled through these two key partners. More information about ELCA World Hunger can be found at www.elca.org/hunger. December’s “Gift of Love” is for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Our gifts to the World Hunger Appeal may seem small, but even small gifts can go far in alleviating the needs of people around the world. Our goal is for everyone to give to the “Gift of Love”, whether it’s 50¢ or $50.

CPR & Infant CPR Training at St. Barnabas, Dec. 8 The Rotary Club of Plymouth will provide CPR/AED training at St. Barnabas on Saturday, Dec. 8. Those who serve as ushers and greeters are especially encouraged to attend. The morning begins with a free one-hour training session called Adult Bystander CPR/AED training from 9-10:00. The leader will teach compression-only or hands-only CPR where mouth-to-mouth/emergency breaths are not practiced. We will discuss when "traditional CPR" is recommended (youth under 8 years

old/55 pounds or lighter, drownings, drug overdoses) but we do not practice this. After a short break, a separate course, American Heart Association Infant/Toddler CPR Course will be offered (cost for this component is $45 per person). This course is video-based and uses infant manikins to practice emergency breaths with and without a barrier. Each participant will receive a AHA HeartSaver course completion card. For more information, contact Rose Umland.

Men’s Breakfast Fellowship Continues Dec. 7 We had 21 show up for the first meeting of this new group in November — a great start! The Men’s Breakfast Fellowship is for men of all ages to get together for fellowship once a month. They meet the 2nd Saturday of the month at church from 8-9 a.m. Those who enjoy cooking will take turns making breakfast, and all will enjoy the conversation and fellowship, getting a chance to get to know one another at a level that is not possible just by coming to Sunday worship. The next breakfast gathering is Dec. 7. Rumor has it that Scott Gilyard and Tom Lindberg are gong to make Swedish pancakes. Sign up at the Welcome Center or just show up on the spur of the moment. For more information, contact Wayne Frederickson, [email protected]

New Approach for Coffee Serving Ministry

This coming year we are asking every St. Barnabas household to help one time for 45 minutes with the important hospitality ministry of serving coffee after worship. (Those with health issues are, of course, not expected to help with this.) This does not involve baking!

Four households will serve each Sunday — two from 9:45-10:30 and two from 11:15-12:00. The task is simply to set the treats out, make coffee as needed, and wash the dishes. Training is offered and we try to pair experienced coffee hosts with those who haven’t done it before.

On the schedule at right, a “ ! ” indicates someone who has served before and a “ ? ” indicates someone who hasn’t served coffee before.

In the first weeks, members have signed up for a specific Sunday. We are now beginning the process of assigning people a Sunday to serve. At right is the list through the end of February. If you don’t see your name on the list, you will be scheduled in the months that follow.

What if I feel I cannot do this task? No problem. Just contact Pastor Amber and tell her you prefer to not take a turn. 763-553-1239 or [email protected]

What if I have a conflict on the date I am scheduled? Our first preference would be for you to contact someone who is on a Sunday you are able to help and arrange a switch on your own. If you are not able to do that, there are people willing to serve multiple times. Contact Pastor Amber and we’ll find someone to fill that spot.

Instructions Coffee & treats are served after both

services on Sunday mornings. Hosts attend worship first, leaving after they have received communion in order to get coffee and treats ready. Two or three households work together

as hosts after each service.

9:00 hosts need to be in the kitchen at 9:45. The first pots of coffee will already be made and the treats on hand in the kitchen. 9:00 hosts are to put out cups, napkins, sugar & creamer, and ice water (and cut and plate

treats, if necessary). Then monitor refreshments and refill as necessary, do dishes, and have things in good order for the 10:30 hosts.

10:30 hosts need to be in the kitchen by 11:15. Monitor refreshments and refill as

necessary, and do dishes. When done serving, wash the remaining dishes and communion cups, rinse out the coffee pots, wipe off the countertops, and clean all tables with soap

and water.

This past summer, a focus group set the following goals and priorities for the coming year.

Goal 1: Build on already-existing congregational worship and ministries to foster intergenerational opportunities from birth to golden years.

Goal 2: Create opportunities for children and youth to connect faith with daily life (i.e. through opportunities at church, and equipping parents for helping their family connect faith in daily life).

Goal 3: Provide training and supportive resources for CYF ministries (for Lighthouse leaders, parents,

and mentors), and communication for these ministries (for leaders, parents, and the wider congregation). Sue Megrund, Director of Children, Youth & Family (CYF) Ministries, is now seeking people willing to serve on a faith formation team that will guide this ongoing work. Ideally, this faith formation team would include adults of all ages, from young parents to retired grandparents. If you have an interest in St. Barnabas having a great CYF ministry, contact Sue at [email protected].

Participants Sought for New Faith Formation Team

St. Barnabas is going to try something new for its children’s Christmas program this year. Rather than try to squeeze it into the busy-ness of the days prior to Christmas when many are doing early family Christmas gatherings, we will culminate the 12 Days of Christmas with a Christmas/Epiphany program at worship services on January 6. Epiphany is the day after the twelfth day of Christmas and it is when the church celebrates the Magi (Three Kings) following the star and worshiping Jesus. It is an important part of the entire Christmas story.

This year we are making it a priority for kids to be more involved in worship and creating an intergenerational ministry. This Christmas/Epiphany will allow for that opportunity to happen by giving the kids an opportunity to sing with the Senior Choir. It will also provide an opportunity to honor the 12 days of Christmas and give kids something to look forward to after all the Christmas festivities are over. The kids will be working on the music at Wednesday Night Lighthouse Dec. 5, 12, and 19. There will be a final rehearsal on Saturday, January 5 at 10:00 a.m.

narthex.

At its October meeting, the church council heard a presentation by Margaret Yapp, the refugee volunteer coordinator for Lutheran Social Service. LSS works with Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service to resettle refugees in Minnesota. The council learned that though the U.S. government has drastically reduced the quota of refugees being accepted, there continues to be a need for congregations to sponsor refugee families. A key part of this is forming a “Circle of Welcome” team of 4-6 people to work with the family over the first year as they assimilate to Minnesota culture. Margaret Yapp repeated her presentation for the St. Barnabas community at an adult forum on October 28. As a result of that meeting, Sandy & Mark Anderson and Louise Nervig stepped forward to be part of the “Circle of Welcome” team. We are looking for 1-2 more people to be part of this team in the coming year. In its first five years, St. Barnabas sponsored two refugee families from Viet Nam. In 2016, the entire Nguyen family

Plans for Refugee Sponsorship Move Ahead (now with 17 spouses and 14 grandchildren) all came to St. Barnabas on the 25th anniversary of their arrival to say “thank you” and presented the congregation with a check for $1,000, which they suggested could be used to sponsor another refugee family. So we will now honor their suggestion and move ahead with plans to help another family. It appears that the family we will likely sponsor consists of five women — a 53-year mother and four daughters. Two are in their early 20s and the younger two are in high school. They are living in the Phillips neighborhood of south Minneapolis, not far from the LSS office on 24th & Park. If you are interested in being part of the Circle of Welcome team, please contact Pastor Wayne.

In the summer of 1991, St. Barnabas worked with Lutheran Social Service to help resettle the family of Phuoc Nguyen from Viet Nam. Mr. & Mrs. Nguyen arrived in August with

seven adult children, the youngest two in high school. St. Barnabas worked with Lutheran

Social Service to find a house for them to rent on Bloomington Av. in south Minneapolis and

helped furnish the house. The expanded Nguyen family worshiped at

St. Barnabas on August 14, 2016 to say “thank you” for the role St. Barnabas played

in their lives.

Morpheus Benefit for St. Barnabas Center for the Arts Dec. 15, 7 p.m. The Morpheus band did a fantastic job of sharing their music at the Sleep Out benefit concert on Nov. 15, helping raise several thousand more dollars for Interfaith & Community Partners. On Saturday, Dec. 15, they will share their talents for a congregational ministry — the St. Barnabas Center for the Arts. Each year, the SBCA provides $5-7,000 of scholarships for families who are unable to pay for music lessons. Some of the SBCA students will join Morpheus on a couple of the numbers. It promises to be a really fun evening. Come and join them!

The St. Barnabas Orchestra (SBO) will play at the coffee hour after both services on Sunday, December 30. The theme is Christmas, with tunes appropriate to the season.

The SBO is a multi-generational orchestra comprised of professionals, amateurs, former and current band/orchestra students, beginners, members, non-members — basically, anyone who wants to come play with us and have a good time. The tunes are arranged with separate parts for less experienced students and more demanding parts for those who've been playing

All-Church Orchestra - December 30 awhile (and who have kept their chops up!). It’s always a lot of fun and greatly appreciated by the congregation (and visitors).

The tunes are sent out ahead of time, then we meet for one rehearsal on Saturday, Dec. 29 from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

News & Notes • Rose & Mike Umland have attained the titles

“grandma & grandpa” with the birth of Molly Rose Spilde on November 10. Congratulations to parents Sarah & Alex, who live in Albertville.

• Pete & Terrie Silbaugh are grandparents for the second time (which means Duane & Carole Cox are great-grandparents for the second time) with the birth of Dax Jackson Silbaugh, born to Josh & Tiffany on Nov. 11. Congratulations!

• We extend our sympathy and the hope of the resurrection to Hazel Edlund on the death of her husband, Dick, who died November 3, just two months short of his 95th birthday. Dick’s funeral was at St. Barnabas on November 8.

• Wayne Frederickson is a manufacturer’s rep for many types of furniture. He currently has 3 floor models of “booster” recliners (the type that raise forward to make it easier to get up from the chair) that have been discontinued and he needs to find a home for them. They’re free, so if you or someone you know could use one, contact Wayne at [email protected].

• A second exterior light has been installed at the west end of the sanctuary, so now both of the new stained glass windows are illuminated at night. There were sufficient funds donated for the stained glass project to pay for the new light. You can see how lovely the illuminated windows are at the Saturday evening worship services and on Christmas Eve.

Family Resource Center at St. Barnabas

Shoebox Christmas Gifts St. Barnabas is again partnering with Interfaith Outreach to provide gifts to children whose families are stretched financially. Ryan Jette, a junior at Wayzata H.S., is serving as the coordinator. The program is simple — donors fill a shoe box with items appropriate for a particular age category (Preschool, Elementary, Middle or High School). Boxes should include necessities such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash cloths, etc. More information about the project — together with empty shoe boxes for you to use — are available at a table in the narthex. Gifts are due Dec. 16.

On the sixth day God turned to the Archangel Gabriel and said: “Today, I am going to create a land called Minnesota. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty; a land of 10,000 beautiful lakes, each one full of fish. It shall have tall majestic pines, peacefully flowing rivers, landscapes full of buffalo, tall grass, and eagles, beautiful blue skies, forests full of bear, elk and moose, and rich farmland.” God continued, “I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper. And they shall be known as a most friendly people, people who practice being Minnesota Nice every day.” “But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “don’t you think you are being too generous to these Minnesotans?” “Not really,” replied God. “Just wait and see the winters I am going to give them.”
