IwasintroducedtothispieceinMaybygambistYukimiKambeduringhercoachingvisithere;ithadmecharmedfromthefirstphrase.ThenotesDandGactasthemusicalthreadthatholdsthisatmosphericpiecetogether;asMs.Kambeexplained,theseleeernamesresemblethename‘Daisy’inJapanesepronuncia=on.OnecanimaginethegentlevoiceofMr.Mizunocallingforhislostcat,“Daisy,Daisy”—D-G,D-G.”Thepiecehassuchagreatstorybehindit,andissomusicallyrewarding(bothplayingandlistening!)thatIwantedtoshareitatViolsWestthisyear.IamsogratefultoLarryandRosforpujngitonthefacultyprogram,andoverjoyedtohavehadthechancetopresentitwithsuchfabulouscolleagues.

Since1992JohnhasbeenontheViolsWestfacultyeveryyearbutone.Attheend-of-weekparty,Johnwascelebratedwithacakewhosecandlescan’tbeblownout–asymbolicwishthat,justastheflameskeptcomingback,sowouldJohn.

Johnalsodirectedelevenwell-aeendedone-daySaturdayworkshopsatStanfordthroughVdGSA-Pacifica.
Forthreeyearshewasco-directoroftheStanfordBaroqueOrchestrawithHerbMyersand
morerecentlyhefrequentlywasaguestdirectorwithAnthonyMar=n’sStanfordBaroqueSoloists.JohnalsoplayedinmanyandvariousEarlyMusicfacultyrecitalsthroughtheyears.
Nearlyeveryyearduringhis=meatStanford,JohngaveannualsolorecitalsinMemorialChurch,mostlyaccompaniedbyharpsichordistYukoTanaka.AsJohn’sexcellentperformancesbecamewellknownheaeractedsubstan=alaudiences.OnceheperformedatStanfordwithhisteacher,WielandKuijken;heconsidersthattobeoneofthehighlightsofhislifeasamusician.
Johncontributedgreatlytotheviolplayingcommunitywithhisexpertperformingandteaching,flexibilityinworkingwithmanydifferentpersonali=es,andhisunfailinggoodhumor.Healsobuiltanapprecia=veaudienceforthesoloviolrepertory,bothbyhisperformancesandbyhisabilitytospeakinanengagingwayaboutthepieceshewasabouttoplay.
WecertainlywillmissJohnandhopethathewillreturntotheBayAreafrom=meto=me.HeplanstoCaliforniaforaconcertinmid-January,2019,andmightbeavailableforlessonsoramini-workshopthen.

=me.Imethim,alongwithGeorgeandGlennaHoule,atthe1993ConclaveinSantaMonica.EventhoughIwasnolongerac=velyplayingtheviolthen,sillyme,IthoughtIknewhowtoplaytheviol,whichiswhyIdecidedtocheckouttheConclave;thereIheardsomeobviouslyvirtuosicplayingatthefacultyconcert,allcomingfromJD’sviol.Thatkindofplayingissomethingyoudon’tforget.Soona\erwards,ImovedclosertoPaloAltoandbeganlessonswithJohnatStanford.Besidesgejngallofthegreatfingerings,bowings,poli=calopinions,winerecommenda=ons,amusing=dbitsaboutPiesburg,sophis=catedmorselsofknowledgeofearlymusicandjazz,oursessionshavealwaysincludedlotsofplayingtogether,trulywonderful(forme!).
AllofthehighlightsofmyamateurviolcareerhavebeenJohn’sdoing:amasterclasswithWielandKuijkenwhereIactuallygottoplayMaraiswithWielandonbass,wri=ngpopandjazzarrangementsforSexChordaeConsortofViolsperformances,asoloconcertofminelastyear,andofcourse,goingtoamazingconcertsofJohn’sovertheyears.IhearthatJohnwillreturnearlynextyearforconcertsandpossibleplaydates,whichbringstomindthatoldDanHickstune:“HowCanIMIssYouWhenYouWon’tGoAway?”.

andIwereintheBeatlesclassthatJohnofferedatourPacificaviolworkshopthisspringatStanford.Weplayedthrough(oraeemptedtoplay)thosesameBeatlessongsweheardthefacultyplayatViolsWest.Ithelpedtoknowthemusicbyheart,asmanyofusdo.Buts=ll,theywereinastylemostofusarenotusedtoplaying,andthereweresomedifficultpassages.Itwouldbefuntoreallyworkonthemsomeday;theyfitviolsverywell,especiallythewayJohnhasarrangedthem.
IfirstmetJohnshortlya\ermovingtotheBayAreain1991.Hehasbeenmyteacheroffandonforsome=me;in2004Itookquiteafewlessonsa\ergejngmy7-stringviol.Ilearnedatremendousamountfromhim,especiallybowingtechnique.Hewasalwaysencouraging,butveryexac=ng,too–specificandthoughzulabouttechnique.Andofcoursealwaysentertaining.MybigregretisthatI
didn'tmakemoreofanefforttohavelessonsmoreregularly.WhenIdidhavealesson,hewasextremelygenerouswithhis=me.OnoneoccasionIaskedforatwo-hourlesson,paidthe(tooreasonable)feeforthetwohours,thenrealizeda\ergejnghomethatIhadbeenthereforthreeandahalfhours.Unlesssomeoneelsewasarrivinga\erwards,healwaysletmylessonsgoover=me.Hejusthadsomuchtosay,andalwayswithlotsofenthusiasm.
Ifyouhaveeverheardhiminconcert,youknowthatheisaremarkableplayer–clean,transparentandexpressive.Asinhisteaching,he'sthoughtabouteverysinglenote,andwhattodowithit.HewastrainedinEuropebysomeofthegreats,andheREALLYknowstheviolanditsliterature.Thereisnoreplacementforhimhere.Itwillbeagreatlossforourviolcommunity.

Asistradi=onalatthisworkshop,thefacultyconcertismostlyasight-readaffair,butwealwaysmake=metoplaythroughnewpieces(andthosedeemedpar=cularlychallenging)atleastoncebeforetheaudiencearrives—andit’sagoodthingwedid!Thereweretrickybitsscaeeredhereandthereforallpar=es(I’mthinkingespeciallyofthetrebles’wicked“harpsichordsolo”inInMyLifeandtheacroba=c,cheerfullyrelentlesswalkingbassinNowhereMan),buttherewasalsoasoulfulness(par=cularlywithMichelle)thatseemedtheperfectmarriageoftheBeatles’lovelysongsmitheryandourinstruments’inherentmelancholythatonlyanexpertarrangerwouldhavecreated—oneinfinitelyfamiliarwithboththeoriginalmaterialandtheinstrumentsweknowandlove.
Allthreesongscameoffbeau=fully,genera=ngsighsandchucklesatvariouspointsfrombothplayersandlisteners…andIthinkJDlookedjustalielemisty-eyedduringtheperformance.Whatalovelysend-off,andwhatanicethingtokeepinmindun=lthenext=mewegettoseehimatViolsWest.Itwon’tbethesameun=lhe’sbackagain!
