November 2014 NORMANDALEnews

So often in our lives it is easy to forget this simple truth. Everything. Yes, everything, belongs to God. Frequently we are tempted to believe we have earned all we have and may distribute and wield it in whatever way we see fit. Our culture seems to fan the flame of personal ownership and achievement. At most, perhaps many of us compart-mentalize what we have, saying to ourselves, "This part is God's, and this part is mine." But scripture and the truth of our Creator proclaim a different more radical message. It's all God's. It's all gift. (Psalm 24:1, 1 Chronicles 29:11-12, Haggai 2:8) We proclaim it every time we say the Lord's Prayer. "The kingdom, and the power, and the glo-ry are yours." It follows then, that we are not owners. We are stewards, caretakers, those who have been entrusted with these and all gifts from God's hand to use in faith and service. This is what it truly means to be a steward. It is to recognize that nothing we "have" is our own. It's all God's. Every belonging, every talent, every minute, every encounter, every penny in the retirement, savings, and checking is God's. Thus, we are encouraged, called, and set free to give, invest, purchase, manage, honor, and distribute, in ways that promote God's good creation, God's gracious word, God's love, peace, power, mercy, joy, and hope in our own lives, and most importantly in the lives of our neighbors, especially those in need.

As we enter this season of stew-ardship, please prayerfully con-sider your gift to support the ministry and mission of Normandale. 2015 commitment cards will be mailed to members’ homes in the coming days. Your pledge may be made online at normluth.org/give or may be given in worship at 8:30 or 11:00 am on Celebration Sunday, November 9.

On Celebration Sunday, bring your commitment card or pick-up a card in the pew rack. To-gether we will come forward, live generously, and pledge our gifts as we continue to love, learn, worship, and serve in His name. It's all God's, and heard in faith, that is a beautiful and freeing word. Live generously. Read Normandale stories of gratitude and generosity at www.normluth.org/stories.

Monday 1 November 1999, 7:00 p.m., my first day serving Normandale Ev. Lutheran Church, I found myself being lashed by ice pellets driven by gusts of Canadian wind screaming through barren trees hovering over the gravestones of Lakewood Cemetery … and I wondered what God had been thinking in bringing me to this time and place. But on we went, a group of brave and bereaved souls, moving from grave to grave, each marked by a new wreath now barely visible from lantern light that led our procession. We paused to name each de-ceased, remember his or her life, sing a hymn of triumph, and say a prayer of commendation. Some-thing deep inside my soul burst into flame; the dis-tance between heaven and earth, eternity and mor-tality became ever so thin. I have looked forward with eager anticipation to our All Saints celebration ever since that first night, and I encourage you to experience this sacred journey for yourself. (I will do my best to hold the ice pellets for another night.) For centuries, Christians were buried in the church-yard. As worshippers heard the promises of scrip-ture read and proclaimed, sang hymns of praise and thanksgiving, they could see the tombstones of their forebears through the church windows. The saints on earth and the saints in heaven were in some sense visible simultaneously. The church militant (we who still struggle against sin within and without) and the church triumphant (those who now from their labors rest in the loving arms of Our Lord) formed a single unity of grace. As members left the worship service, they walked out into the world past the witness of those sinner-saints who had gone before them and now urged them on in their own walk of faith.

I have been deeply moved attending Christmas and Easter services in India, for after the glorious words of hope and love, everyone visits their family graves. They have prepared for this moment by cleaning, decorating, and placing candles on the graves of loved ones. Now they add flowers and light candles and remember. I once remarked that the living were including the dead in the celebra-tion. “No,” I was told, “they are inviting us to partic-ipate in the eternal feast they now experience.” The distance between heaven and earth, eternity and mortality becomes ever so thin. We hear the words of the Proper Preface before the Sanctus (both quoted at the beginning of this col-umn) before the Words of Institution every time we celebrate Holy Communion: “with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven.” Whenever I preside, I become aware again of the thin separation be-tween the two. I feel so strongly the presence of my family members, friends, and the saints of this con-gregation now in the church triumphant. The feast now and the feast to come, both hosted by Our Lord, seem to merge into one celebration that stretches forth through space and time, from the here and now into the there and then of eternity. Yes, we have a goodly heritage (Psalm 16:6) as well as an inheritance incorruptible, kept in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4). Thanks be to God.

All of us live with treasured memories of those who once walked with us, but now live in our hearts. Your Normandale Foundation invites you to take a memory of a departed loved one and share it with your church community. We envision the back narthex area filled with your memories written on brightly colored paper. You may record names, write a story or poem, or draw a picture. Memories will be placed for viewing before and after the services on All Saints Sunday, November 2.

Distinctive paper will be available at the Welcome Center all morning of All Saints Sunday. The Foundation is honored to be able to provide grants that support new church programs and outreach minis-tries beyond the scope of the church budget. While the Foundation welcomes your monetary gifts throughout the year, this event supports our members as they remember those whom they have loved and lost.

Bio: Allison James is in confirmation and youth choir at NLC. She enjoys running, playing trumpet, singing, travelling and campfires. She is daughter to Cameron and Amy James and sister to Lindsay James.

“Making P lans” I enjoy making plans. I made plans to join the cross country team at Central Middle School in Eden Prairie in 8th grade last year. I made plans to join the Nordic ski team and the track team following cross coun-try. I made plans to run 300 miles for the cross country summer miles program last summer. I made plans to join the Eden Prairie High School cross country team this fall. I followed

through on these plans except for the last one. As some of you know I'm wearing a lovely boot currently as a result of a stress fracture. Usually when parts of me are hurting I just push through it. This time my plans didn't happen. I had to stop. I'm still not sure why and I won-der if God didn't think it was a good idea for me to run in cross country this year, but I'm sure He has a plan.

There was a period of time after I found out that I had a stress fracture that I was angry with God. I was impa-tient with my injury. Still even after the cross country season has ended I wish I could have participated with all my friends. After some reflection on this I realized I talked to God more and I've learned some patience. I talk to God about how I feel, requests for His hand in my life, and I share questions I have. I haven't stopped making plans. There is something about hope and trust and God's love for me I am learning. The free time that opened up as a result of my inability to run has been filled with music. I have had time to play my trumpet more often. I have recently joined the brass choir at my school, and the jazz band. Next year, I have plans to audition for the Wind Ensemble, join the marching band and continue cross country. Next year is going to be a very busy year, but I'm sure I'll do it all with God's help. For now I have a new pair of running shoes I can't wait to put on.

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

Through prayer and love you carried our family during a time when we were lost in the emotions of worrying about, loving, and hoping for, the best life possible for our precious Chloe April. That little girl worked so hard to be with us here, but when she became weary God claimed her to be his littlest angel. We are grateful that she continues her life with him. We thank you. We are grateful for you and what you have done for us.

With love and great respect, Chloe’s Mom and Dad,

Nate, Katie, Pastor Dixie and Bill Johnson

A big thank you to all who have contributed with supplies and/or monetarily.

Thank you for your generosity and your prayers. The wonderful Augustana Heritage afternoon service on Sunday, September 21, had a good and enthusiastic turnout again this year. After expenses, these generous worshipers raised nearly $750 for Ebola relief.

Thanks to women of Normandale for supporting our October 6 fall event so generously.

We heard informative speakers from the Crossroads Preschool and Beacon Interfaith Housing (housing for homeless youth in the west metro suburbs). Gifts of $800 were sent to Crossroads and to Beacon and an additional gift of $800 from Thrivent was sent to Beacon.

Thanks also to the knitters of Normandale who supplied 25 knit hats for the children at Crossroads Preschool.

As of September 15, NLC has given a total of $10,646 to the campaign. Thank you for your generosity.

Names provide each of us the next layer of knowing one another. Alphabetically speaking, they sometimes place us physically in a line or a classroom. Historically, names can carry definitions or meanings (if a name is passed down from a relative, if it is a place name, if the name carries a known meaning). Because names are given by our parents, they are gifts from a previous time that we live with, usually for a lifetime. These are all things we carry around with us and share every time we speak or sign our name. These are all reasons for asking another’s name, joyfully holding it in our memory, and recalling it the next time we need it. Knowing and sharing names is a holy act of caring for each other. But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

Isaiah 43: 1

If you want to learn or have questions about what the Lutheran church currently is doing, come to hear Bishop’s Assistant, Deborah Stehlin, who will present the program. This follows the Chapel Ser-vice which will be given by Pastor Chuck Humphrey before lunch. The Book Club will meet in the library led by Marge Jerpbak who has chosen The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan. It is the story of the girls who worked in the atomic plant in Oakridge, Tennessee. Clarice Ottoson will record blood pressures until noon.

This is another Normandale tradition when a special effort is made to bring persons to the service and lunch who usu-ally have difficulty attending. The date is Wednesday, December 3, at 11:00 am. The lunch is provided by the church and served by the staff. If you would like to be given a ride, call Marta at Healing & Wholeness, 952-929-1697 x 31.

Again this year we will be participating in the Gifts for Seniors program. This organization collects gifts and gives them to agencies that work with older seniors who have been identified as often forgot-ten and usually needy individuals.

The items requested usually are everyday necessities, but something a little special would be a treat. There will be a barrel in the lower level near the elevator after Thanksgiving and it will have a gift list pamphlet. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has given the Senior Com-mittee funds to help with the purchasing.

The Senior Committee will sponsor what has become an annual event, a lutfisk dinner, with all the traditional dishes on Sunday, December 14, at 1:00 pm. Now, if you are one of those that only remember it as the lye soaked smelly fish, there will be meatballs. This year we have added a special treat of a Swedish accordionist who will entertain with old favorites. Sing along if you remem-ber the words. Reservations can be made starting November 16 through December 7 at the Welcome Center after both services or by calling the church office at 952-929-1697. Payment of $20 per person is required by December 7. Normandale mem-bers are given priority seating. Non-members are accepted when accompanied by Normandale members.

"Are you interested in serving as a member of the Altar Guild community? What is the Altar Guild you say? They are a group of Normandale members who are responsible for the preparation of Holy Communion, Holy Baptism and other occasional worship services. Tasks include "setting the table" for communion; filling cups for the distribution, making sure the altar linens are in good order and that the overall appearance of the Altar area (Chancel) is ready for worship services. The time commitment is approximately three hours per month. There are currently five Altar Guild member groups who are in a Sunday Worship service rotation. The tasks can be completed on Saturday mornings or early Sunday mornings. Contact Ray Olson, Altar Guild Chair, 612.790.7907 OR David Clarke, Director of Worship & Music, 952 929 1697 x 35, 612 747 0363.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has changed the way they distribute funds for church and community projects from larger one time grants to allowing each member the opportunity twice a year to request $250 for a project. The member would form a team for an action that would use the funds for seed money or pay for products used. For example, the quilters could buy batting for the quilts they make, persons making repairs at Normandale House could purchase paint, the youth when they help at CES could buy food, etc. There will be a meeting Sunday, November 9, between services in the Lower Level Conference Room to explain this further for Thrivent mem-bers or persons wanting funding for an action. This is a great opportunity for our congregation to get money for things they would like to do.

Get ready for the knitting season to work on kids hats for Normandale’s ministry, as well as prayer shawls and some new adventures with cotton yarn (dishcloths, washcloths, and baby blankets). If you are a beginner or a skilled knit-ter, come and get good ideas to hone your skills as well as ideas for projects. The first session will be for beginners, to discuss yarn, needles, and good beginning projects. There will also be tips to improve knitting as well. The second session will focus on hats “beyond the stocking cap,” (just in time for Christmas). If you can’t knit or would like to contribute, yarn donations are cheerfully accepted. Yarn should be in skeins or hanks (please, no tangled nests), and should be washable and warm (acrylic or wool blend – please, no cotton or crochet thread). QUESTIONS: Call Nancy Thorvilson, 952-835-0309 or email [email protected].

Start the Advent season by creating a live Advent Wreath on your own or with your family. Mark the days of Advent with lighting your wreath each week. Devotions provided for each day. There will also be craft stations for kids!

Sign-up online at www.normluth.org/events OR register with cash or check at the Welcome Center on Sundays, November 16 & 23. Questions, contact Patty Rumppe, 952-929-1697 x 11 or [email protected].

Bring holiday cheer to homeless families by helping and/or joining us for this year’s Holiday Party on Saturday, December 6, 10:00-11:30 am, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2315 Chicago Ave. So., Minneapolis.

Help in any one of three ways:

1. Supply items for our current and former families: soap, dish soap, detergent, trash bags, cleaning items, toothpaste, and other household items. Bring all items to Norma’s Closet at NLC in lower level.

2. Give a Target or Cub gift card or make a monetary donation to help supply for family needs (check to NLC; memo line- Normandale House Holiday Party). 3. Help with the party itself: set up, face paint, take photos, clean up, or just enjoy good conversation with the Norman- dale Housing community of which we are a part.

Questions, call Phil Larson, 952-994-7898 or email [email protected].

The Mission Outreach committee invites you to spread God’s love to families served by CES (Community Emergency Servics), Normandale & Elliot Avenue Housing, and SAYFSM (Sub-Saharan African Youth & Family Services of Minnesota) through the annual Sponsor a Family holiday giving program. There are two ways to participate:

Give tangible gifts: This program helps families in need enjoy the holiday season by anonymously matching them with donors, like you, who provide hope and compassion through food, gift cards, clothing, and toys. You may sign up for a family or an individual. Give a monetary gift: Sign up to bring a $75 Walmart gift card for SAYFSM families, or make a cash donation and we will purchase for you. Thrivent is generously providing supplemen-tary funding.

We will gratefully sign you up for family / individual gifts or receive your donations at the Welcome Center on November 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30!

Normandale House Holiday Party (see article on the left side of this page). Join us for lunch and fellowship on Saturday, December 6, 12:30-2:30 pm, with families served by SAYFSM, where we will give each family a gift card for a holiday meal. The lunch is held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2504 Columbus Avenue, Minneapolis. Wrap the gifts for Normandale and Elliot Avenue housing on Wednesday, December 10, 5:00-6:30 pm (during dinner) and 7:45-8:45 pm (after the Advent service) in Fellowship Hall. Wrap one gift or gifts for a whole family!

Following worship, you are invited to take a pie to-go bag “a slice of thanks!” Deliver to anyone you come into contact with, run into, or think of who is working on Thanksgiving Eve or Thanksgiving Day.

Need ideas where you could deliver? Gas stations, retirement facilities, police or fire station, restaurants, drug stores, bus, taxi, radio or news rooms.

Questions? Contact Amy James, [email protected] or 952-929-1697 x 13.
