  • Society Notice Board Editor’s Comments: Well most of us are basking in unseasonably warm and dry weather, maybe its 1976 all over again. Hopefully you have the opportunity to get out and about. A lot of the stored locos around the country are on the move, by rail and road, to scrap yards and preservation sites. So if you see anything interesting let me know. Remember good quality, high resolution digital photos are always welcome of anything railway related, particularly of unusual events. Please note that at the recent AGM the Rules & Constitution of the Society were amended and are reproduced in an insert included with this month’s issue. Errata: First time with colour on back page last month and I got a caption wrong !! Obviously it was 66703 ‘Doncaster PSB’ Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in part or as a whole in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. (All addresses are on Page 2) Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine – colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. Some items may be placed on our excellent website if we have insufficient space in the magazine, The latest date for articles / info for the next magazine is Wednesday 30th May 2007. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please. Membership Matters: Membership Rates: Annual: £15.00 Five Year Rate: £70.00 New Members: The following new members have joined this month: Berris Allen, Michael Blackburn, Michael Cheskin, Brian Lawrence, Dr. Michael Pointer - A warm welcome to you all. • Where in the…..? A light-hearted look around Britain at the current railway scene to see if you can spot the location. Last month’s ’quiet’ location was Calton Tunnel to the eastern side of Edinburgh Waverley.

Railway Cuttings Michael Hillier’s Railway Cuttings Transport police have proclaimed an operation to tackle anti-social behaviour near railway tracks a success. Neighbourhood officers patrolled the area between Cogan and Llantwit stations and spoke to youths about trespassing, under-age drinking and drug abuse. Vandals pelted three trains within an hour of each other in South Wales, the most serious attack causing a smashed windscreen. In the first of three separate attacks youths threw stones at a Barry Island to Pontypridd service as it was stopping at Llandaff station smashing a window shattering glass over a passenger. Just ten minutes later youngsters threw stones from Beresford Bridge in Splott in Cardiff breaking the front windscreen of a Maesteg to Gloucester train. In the final incident stones were thrown at an Aberdare to Barry Island train waiting at Pontypridd station, but no damage was caused.

WATER ORTON STATION Location: Water Orton is a small country station 7.5 miles east of Birmingham and 34 miles south west of Derby. It lies on a major trunk route from the north east of England through Yorkshire and the North Midlands to the West Midlands, the South West and South Wales. In addition immediately to the east of the station is Water Orton East Junction, which caters for traffic to the East Midlands and East Anglia and is also an additional slow line to Derby. About 1 mile to west, but out of sight from the station, is Water Orton West Junction where freight trains leave the main line to go forward towards Bescot and Wolverhampton. Between Birmingham and Water Orton there are important sources of freight including Lawley Street FLT and Washwood Heath Yard. Five miles towards Derby is Kingsbury with its oil terminal and line to an expanding container base at Birch Coppice. Daw Mill colliery lies about 4 miles to the east towards Nuneaton producing regular coal traffic.

Access: Rail: Central Trains provide the only infrequent stopping services at the rate of about one train every 2 hours in each direction as part of the Birmingham to Leicester service. Bus: Travel West Midlands provide the number 590C service from Bull Street, Birmingham about every 30 minutes the journey taking about 35 minutes. Arriva County Links service 767 runs through the village and is branded Tamworth-Birmingham International. Road: With Birmingham being encircled by motorways, the M5, M6 and the M42, and also easily accessible from the M1, M40 and the M69, Water Orton is closest to Junction 4 on the M6 and Junction 7 on the M42. When leaving the motorway system take the A446 heading north towards Coleshill. The A446 takes you to the west of Coleshill and after crossing the B4114 you turn left on to the B4117 through Gilson and then by turning left at the next junction into Water Orton. This winding road takes you through to the station where there is free parking.

The station is unmanned and the island platform is reached via steps through the station buildings from a road over bridge, to where there is a bus stop style shelter. There is no disabled access.

  • Passenger Traffic: Virgin XC 220 and 221 Voyagers dominate the long distance through services between north-east/Scotland and south-west. Central Trains operate the services from Cardiff to Nottingham via Derby, and Birmingham to Stansted Airport via Leicester. Class 170s are mostly used with regular support from Class 158s. Classes 150, 153 and 156 are also occasionally seen. Steam and diesel locomotive charter trains often use this route, so it's worth checking their itineraries, especially on Saturdays. Only one face of the island platform is in regular use for stopping trains, this being bi-directional. Freight Traffic: The visitors are tempted to come here by the variety and quantity of the freight trains passing on all three through lines. Classes 56, 57, 60, 66 and 67 all regularly work through everyday. EWS and Freightliner Class 66s being predominant. Other classes can be seen working on an ' as required ' basis, running often enough to give you the opportunity of seeing something more interesting. Types of freight include coal (EWS and Freightliner Heavy Haul), tankers, scrap metal, steel (slab and coil), ballast, cars, departmental, aggregates (self-dishcharge), Intermodel and Freightliner containers. Light engine movements are also to be seen and at present the HST measurement train is booked to work through at 17.30 on Thursday. You can usually see 5 trains an hour bearing in mind that some trains are optional and others run only on certain days. On Saturdays only 10 to 15 trains run all the day and only 4 on Sundays. Since there is only one island platform you do not have to dash around trying to get the wagon numbers, but services in the Birmingham to Derby direction can be travelling at high speed.

Best Spotting/Photography Sites: At ground level, the west end of the platform is best, you have an unobstructed view and plenty of time to see the trains approaching from the west. Facing east from the same position photography is still possible but the station building obstructs the view until the train enters the station. However, trains run at lower speeds from the east and this helps considerably. Photography is also possible from the road overbridge at the station in both directions. To photograph trains approaching from the Derby and Leicester lines there is a footbridge a few yards to the east of the station with gives excellent views of the junction. The signals in the station area are always set at red until a train is accepted, apart from the signal for the main line to Derby which always defaults to green as the sections clear. This gives advance warning of approaching traffic. Facilities: There are no facilities on the station, however at the end of the over bridge are an excellent Chinese Takeaway, Fish and Chip shop, Sandwich Bar and Tesco Metro. But best of all, is The Dog Inn from where you eat and drink and spot all the trains from the car park.

  • Diary of a Loco Spotter Eddie Rathmill - 1981 Part 2

Crewe Open Day on June 6th was the next trip out and alas - no cops, (with the exception of four HST power cars). These were now numbered up to 43185 although only complete up to 43172. The next step, I decided, was to go and look for particular shunters and so, on June 10th I headed north-east in search of the Gateshead, Thornaby and Darlington allocation. 08004 was seen at Darlington, 08232 at Hartlepool and 08512 at Monkwearmouth. With 31120 at Gateshead, 37082 at Tyne Yard and 37096 at Thornaby I had quite a reasonable day. Back to London on the 20th and 21st and visits to Ripple Lane, Stratford and Cricklewood - its surprising what you can get when you know where to look. 08239 / 08417 / 08519 / 08527 / 08558 / 08606 / 08758 and 09004 (at Selhurst) were all copped and during the day I also managed to see 31262 / 33063 / 33205 / 33206 / 37259 / 73119 plus dozens of dmus at Marylebone depot. Six days later I was at St Rollox for the open day but only 20120 / 20204 / 26023 were sighted on the trip. At this point I realised that I was certainly doing better down south than up north and so four days later I revisited the Capital - my theory was disproved - I only saw 3 locos, 08873 / 33119 / 37084. Time to find out what I was still looking for - I checked my books: 1 x 0s1, 4 x 03s, 40 x 08s, 2 x 09s, 4 x 20s, 4 x 26s, 2 x 27s, 2 x 31s, 12 x 33s, 8 x 37s, 10 x 73s Total: 89. 72 locos had been copped in three and a half months. August 1st and I decided to go to Doncaster, no cops and only one, 08869 at Shirebrook a week later. So it was back to the Southern Region on the 12th and I was in luck, 33051 / 33110 / 33202 / 33204 / 73002 / 73101 / 73107 / 73116 were all copped and I returned home happy. 37304 was my next cop, at Crewe Works on August 22nd. Billy, the guide, gave us some hot-off-the-press information. Apparently, 17 class 46s were to be brought from Swindon to Crewe and Doncaster and, after refurbishing, were to be sold to Iran. Also, the engine from 40031 was to be placed in 40133 and the loco was to be exported to Zimbabwe! - I never heard or read anything about either of these snippets again. The Railway Press at the time reported that the two 01s at Holyhead were to be scrapped and so, on August 24th, I set off for the Breakwater. Luckily, there was somebody at the site and he took great pleasure in inviting me in to view both locos. (lucky so and so, ed !!) If only I'd had a camera with me. I also saw 08746, the loco missing on my last trip to the Welsh location. Blackpool next and seven trams were copped, a new one had been built from an old balloon. Reading, Basingstoke, Knottingley and York were all visited over the next week but only 97804 and 56092 were seen for the first time and then I was off on another mystery trip (why don't they do them these days?) on the 31st. The destination was Barry Island, returning via Bristol. 08756 / 08804 / 37241 were copped and once again I had the awesome experience of wandering through Dai Woodhams graveyard. There was a great man, now sadly deceased. The sight of 110 locos met me on September 9th when I visited Swindon Works and three 08s were copped, 08133 / 08281 / 08357 but they did not reduce my wanted total as I thought they had been scrapped ages ago ! I hadn't bargained for this and wondered whether there were any other withdrawn locos still in existence that I needed. I searched through the past twelve months magazines and it appeared that there was only one other, 08082 which I added to my wanted total. Doncaster and Frodingham on September 19th were my next ports of call and just a couple of 56s were seen, I decided not to search for this class until they had all been built. Then it was October, and on the 7th I returned to London to cop 08440 / 08546 at Stratford. Three days later and the tour of the year, the "Two Firths Express" to Dundee, via the ECML. Haulage from Manchester to York was by 40050 and then 55002 "THE KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY" took charge as far as Edinburgh. 20217 / 20218 took over at this point and we headed off to our destination via Thornton Junction. Cops that day were 08271 / 08425 / 08719 / 20218 / 20226 / 26037 / 27032 leaving me wanting just one class 27 - 27003 off Inverness. A Bristol/London round robin was next on the 24th and 08584 / 33015 were seen. Two more for the book, but my mind was on 27003 and I vowed to get back to Scotland as soon as possible. Into October and a fortnight later I set out for Edinburgh in search of 27003, it wasn't to be seen - and neither was anything else. I had the worse day for a long time. There was nothing else for it I'd have to go to Inverness, - but not just yet.

  • I decided to have a complete change and for the first time went searching for my last two class 31s - one shedded at Immingham and the other at Bristol. Success. I visited the Humberside Depot and on route copped 31242 at Frodingham. It was an exceptional day, I also copped 08436 / 08439 / 08743 and a 56. November 14th and the turn of Eastleigh, with 08203, 08933, 09025, 33209, and 73113. I travelled via Bristol in the hope of seeing 31258, my last Brush 2, but although I could see six 31s on shed I couldn't see three of the numbers. A spotter on the station told me that one of them was 258 but I wanted to see for myself, it didn't get booked down. Nearly the end of the year, and just four more trips before Christmas: Liverpool (no cops), Ipswich and Harwich via London, 03162 / 03399 / 08261 / 08530 / 08752 / 73135 and also my last two west country units, Swindon, 08082 / 08767 and London (no cops). The North Yard at Swindon had contained 47 engines but not one number could be seen, although we were given a list. There were a further 100 locos in the works. Luckily I didn't want any of the Yard locos as I had made it a policy that I would only book down numbers if I actually saw them first hand. It was December 28th, and the lull between Christmas and New Year when I suddenly got the urge to visit Bristol again to try and see 31258. So the next day I made the long trip via Cardiff. I copped 08586 / 08801 / 37297 but no sign of my last class 31.

WAGON REVIEW 32t Steel Carrying Wagon TOPS SAA Design Code SA001A Nos 400000-400299

At first the air-braked steel carrying flats were conversions of previous vacuum braked vehicles but the first new steel carrying wagon design was the Steel AB, coded SAA and numbered 400000-400299. This wagon was built at Ashford Works from 1970-1971 and was a four-wheeled design with turnover bolsters and hinged side stanchions and although they were designed to carry steel products, many have been used as barrier wagons for the past 22 years. Of the 300 wagons built only 98 are left in revenue earning service.

Portugal On the 21st April 1411 was turned out for IR867 the 11:20 Porto Campanha to Regua, the following day it was out again, and again on IR867, it was joined on this day by 1455 which headed IR870 the 11:14 Pocinho to Porto Campanha, so presumably it started on IR861 the 07:25 Porto Campanha to Pocinho. On the 24th 1411+1413 were paired on IR861 while control of IR867 passed to 1455.
