The Reporter: is published monthly (except in July), a subscription is included in our member’s annual Sahib Shrine dues of $125, by the Sahib Shrine Temple, Inc., 600 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34232. Third-class postage paid at Manasota, FL.

For several years, Sahib Shriners had what was referred to as an “Angel Fund’ to assist nobles who were unable to pay their dues because of health, financial or age related issues. The “Angel Fund” remitted the necessary funds to keep them as current members, and to avoid suspension due to non-payment of Shrine dues.

This fund has been fully exhausted and there is no place in our budget to replenish the fund. This is where you can lend a helping hand to a fellow Shrine Mason, if he is in good standing within his Blue Lodge.

For your contribution of $20, you can keep one delinquent member from being removed from our membership rolls for another year pending his status as a Master Mason. You can personally select a member from the current delinquent list, or we will do it for you.

Please remember these nobles in need of a helping hand. Stop by the office and be responsible for keeping a fellow Shriner on the active list.

Potentate’snotes

Here we go again. Another month, different activities, different events, always looking for something to attract you to become a more active Shriner.

Our Fair Director Butch Power ably assisted by Cliff Bloodworth did a great job and produced a beautiful display that drew people in with questions and comments at the fair. A “tip of the Fez” and a big hand for a job well done! Our club and unit volunteers did their usual great job and earned a few bucks for the group of their choice. Unfortunately, our Murder Mystery Dinner had to be postponed due to meager ticket sales and programs directly prior to and following our date. We will try again in the fall.

We have made the transition to a janitorial service and it seems to be meeting our needs. Our part-time janitor is working well and will ensure a cleaner and more welcoming building. The changes were necessary as our rentals are growing, and set-up and tear-down is needed in a timelier manner.

We are looking for ways and means to keep pace with building repairs and replacements and this is no easy task. Money, is as always, very tight! We are currently doing repairs on refrigeration problems, parking areas, canopies, overhead cover for our new van, and various smaller projects. It is an ongoing problem and if we fall behind we are in trouble. Our Five-Year Plan is our guide, as to priorities, and so far has kept up-to-date. There may well come a time when we call on our clubs and units to adopt a needed repair, but so far, we are okay.

Do not forget to join us at Sahib for a great meal in the Sahara Room! Things have changed, menus are improved and we have a whole new cook staff with different ideas to tempt you! May is a little quieter, but things to do and places to attend are still there. Try our second Cigar Night on May 6, Widows Sons annual concert May 14, our Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance May 10 and a Stated Meeting May 11. Your Divan will be at the Florida Shrine Association May 4 - 7. An easy month finally! Enough for now - support our temple!

Yours in the Faith, Carroll G. Scribner Sahib Potentate 2016

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

May 2016 SAHIB REPORTER Page 7

Chief Rabban’s notesby Bill Balkwill, [email protected]

Recorder’s notesby Ed Firquin, [email protected]

As the days of 2016 seem to be flying by as fast as one can imagine, many of the visitors have migrated

to their summer homes. Although Sarasota County continues to grow in population of full-time residents, we at Sahib continue to have our membership diminish. So as our new neighbors move into the community step forward, greet them and invite them to visit Sahib Shriners. There could be no greater welcome to the community than bringing a new neighbor to Sahib. The lounge and restaurant have great meals and drinks to offer and just maybe you can get a neighbor interested in Masonry or Shrinedom.

I wish to say something to all those helping around the temple and grounds as there are fewer volunteering

their time to help. You few members and volunteers that keep the social activity and work around the temple going, and at times mistreated, sometimes yelled at and most of the time not thanked by those you are helping for all your work, a big thank you for all you do! Without you Sahib would not function and it’s becoming harder to find those willing to do what you do.

The Divan continues to work at new ideas for revenue production as the summer creeps toward us and the 2016 year continues. So, watch for ideas coming your way and get involved. Don’t forget that child within and I will see you around Sahib.

We just experienced a huge success with the 34th Annual Sahib Shrine Golf Tournament. The

tournament was held at Bobby Jones Golf Course and we had a great turnout. Lady Gail and I want to give a personal thank you to Noble Tom and Lady Norma Cunningham and to all that came and helped on April 9. It would not have been a success without you! From the efforts of all the nobles, ladies, volunteers, sponsors and our great golfers, we finished with a good fundraiser. Photos, winners and earnings will be posted in June’s “Reporter.”

Potentate Carroll Scribner and Lady Sandy, Personal Aide Duke Goranites and Lady Charlene and Lady Gail and I attended the Azan Potentate’s Ball in Melbourne, Florida. It was a lot of fun. We also attended Morocco’s Ball in Jacksonville, Florida with a western theme and Lady Gail and I got to wear our western fireball shirts

that Past Potentate Dale LaBell and Lady Donna gave us; we had a great time. “What time is it?” It’s Fireball time!

Your restaurant and lounge are growing stronger. As you know, we have had some changes with chefs. Chef Bob retired and is doing well, and General Manager Ed Shauan is changing the atmosphere. It is a fun and happy place to come and eat and enjoy each other’s company. We bring a lot of our neighbors and they enjoy coming in. Try inviting your friends and neighbors also.

The Rusty Mason night was a huge success again. Good job to the Past Masters that did the Ritual work. On the lighter side - when you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; and sometimes when you are safe and happy, remember someone has prayed for you. I am proud to serve the nobility. Remember, support the Shrine and keep a child in your heart!

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Del Rawlinson, [email protected]

Hope all had a happy Easter. That being said, hope all returning to the north have a safe journey

home and we will be looking forward to your return in the fall. Before listing the events to take place this month, I need to encourage people to volunteer. We desperately need your help. Events such as Hillbilly Buffet and Pancake Breakfast are lacking support to the point that it is becoming hard for the few volunteers to keep up. These clubs and units financially help to keep the temple afloat. We understand some of you have worked these events for years, but just an hour or two of your time can keep the temple financially stable.

Even if your time to volunteer is limited, there will be something for you to do and there is fun to be had.

April’s Sahib Shrine Golf Tournament was a huge success. A big thank you to all the workers and committee. Remember, the Queen of Hearts drawing takes place every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Come in for dinner, pick a number and become a winner. You can’t win if you don’t play. Hope you enjoyed the Sahib Derby at our temple.

Well (like it or not) summer is here. Time to slow down for a short time before we crank up again in the

Motor Corps Shrine Clubby Giles Light (G-man), Secretary, glight @ ahoo.com

April showers bring May flowers. May also brings some pretty good weather for motorcycle riders. We

have been riding quite a bit since the last edition of “The Reporter” and we will be doing more this month. Hopefully, on Memorial Day, we will pause to remember the men and women that have died while serving in our nation’s armed forces. So, the Motor Corps, along with others, salute our veterans which have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The final number of our Spaghetti Dinner back in February was $930. That amount was given to the Shrine. Thanks again to all those who dined with us.

K. J. Young, Jeff’s son, presented a work of art to the Motor Corps and to Sahib Shriners in memory of Jeff Young (Snowman). Motor Corps members will soon be wearing Memory Patches as recognition that he will not be forgotten.

Members of the Motor Corps and Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association made the annual pilgrimage to the Masonic Home in St. Petersburg the weekend of March 18-20. Although members came and went at different times, there were at least fifteen motorcycles that made the trip from this area.

The weekend of March 26-27, twelve of our members took an overnight trip to Homosassa. Reports indicated it was a great ride and more importantly, there was no rain. Thanks to our Road Captain Eric Bock (Ironman) for making the arrangements.

The Rusty Mason Degree was held at Sahib Shriners on March 30. Two Motor Corps members were actively involved in the evening’s event. Special thanks to Barry Hart (Policyman) who served as Worshipful Master and Al Dahlberg (Big Al) who served as Junior Warden. This was the 20th year for the Rusty Mason program at Sahib Shriners.

On Sunday, April 10, members of the Motor Corps and the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association supported the Tour de Cure in Lakewood Ranch in

support of the American Diabetes Association. This is the second year for this event which has proven to be very popular among our membership. Some of our members may be sporting the t-shirts they received at the event.

Several members of the Motor Corps rode to the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa on Monday, April 25 for the presentation of checks from the Sam Swope Charity Ride. This is an annual event and we are happy to be a part of it.

The May Pancake Breakfast on the 1st will be your last chance to purchase a ticket on our Booze Wagon. Drawing will take place mid-morning on Sunday. Winner takes all!

The Motor Corps will be making its spring pilgrimage to Murphy, North Carolina the weekend of May 19-22. This is always a fun trip, albeit a long one.

Although it is only May, in about ten weeks the Motor Corps will be taking over for the Hillbillies during the Thursday night dinners. Instead of the Hillbilly buffet, the Motor Corps will be serving up their famous burgers, onion rings and maybe even some battered mushrooms, plus a number of other items on our menu. More details forthcoming in the next edition of “The Reporter” since there is no July publication.

The Motor Corps welcomes our newest member, Del Rawlinson (Backwards). We are pleased to have Sahib’s Assistant Rabban among our ranks. Motor Corps membership now stands at thirty-four. We would welcome a thirty-fifth!

We have three birthdays and three anniversaries to report this month. Birthdays include Lady Leslie Bock (Skittles) on May 10, Lady Muriel Young (Snow Angel) on the 19th and Scott Steelman (Gray Fox) on the 25th. Anniversaries include Eric Bock (Ironman) and Lady Leslie on the 3rd, Bryan Pullman (Shortcut) and Lady Terri on the 7th, John Hubbard (Hotrod) and Lady Carol on the 24th.

Manatee Shrine Clubby Tom Willeman, President, [email protected]

The May meeting date is set for May 6. Please note there will be no meetings in June, July or August.

We will resume on September 2.Manatee Shrine Club held a baseball appreciation

dinner on March 18 at Sahib Shriners, it was well attended by a group of 55; this was a very enjoyable evening. April was a very busy month as we hosted the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance along with a Tram Tour of Port Manatee.

As of this writing, we have no scheduled speaker

for May. Our menu for the May 6th meeting will be chicken marsala, roasted potatoes, vegetable or chicken cobb salad, dessert is peach cobbler. Please make your reservations one week in advance so we have an accurate count on the meals to provide to Peridia. Russ Sexton will be taking reservations by email at [email protected], phone (941) 773-7280 or you can mail your reservations to Russ Sexton at 5406 White Blaze Terrace, Parrish, Florida 34219. Have a great summer.

North Port Shrine Clubby John Brophy, Scribe, [email protected]

A rather abbreviated column this month as a new scribe has yet to volunteer to carry on the duties.

It is difficult to report on affairs not attended in person. Once again the Black Camel has passed through our ranks. One of our senior veterans, Major B. John Ross has entered the unseen temple. Noble Ross was a B-17 pilot in what was then the Army Air Force during WWII, a dedicated Mason and Shriner, never missed a gathering, driving many miles to attend them. We will miss you Brother John.

It does not seem possible that the time for our sno-nobles to depart is almost here. How the time does gallop along. North Port Shrine Club wishes all a safe journey to whatever never-never-land you call up north. See y’all later.

April happenings: picnic on April 4, river cruise on the Caloosahatchee April 14, mixer at the Olde World restaurant April 17. As usual, NPSC meets for

breakfast every Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. rain or shine at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port. You can’t beat (no pun intended) eggs any way, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, fruit cup, taters, toast and all the coffee you can drink at $5 plus. Why not join us?

(Bits and Pieces) Want to outdo your friends’ selfies? Try this - A New York rug designer offers a new method for self-immortalization. A digital image of your fingerprint is enlarged to room size, sent to weavers in Nepal who produce an exact replica in a rug made to customers’ color and material specifications. From $3,500 for a 6 by 6-foot carpet. How’s that for one-upmanship?

(Quotable Notable) (April) Rod Steward. For May, who said, “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down”? The usual comped breakfast for two for the correct answer.

beashrinernow.combeashrinernow.com continues to attract quality candidates. To date, more than 1,200 men have inquired about Freemasonry or becoming a Shriner. While the numbers of those interested are impressive, we really need more mentors to ensure candidates receive the attention they need and deserve. Consider joining the more than 1,150 Shriners who are already virtual mentors.

As a virtual mentor, you will be paired with a candidate in your area who has similar interests. Communicating by phone, email or in person, you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner. You will answer questions or concerns, help find the Lodge best suited to the candidate’s interests, and help him with his journey to become a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.

SHRINE UNIT NEWS

April showers have come and gone and the May flowers should be out by the time you read this, but

the many hours put in by the Shriners at the Sarasota County Fair will have produced funds for their unit and that includes the Clowns. Their earnings will help fund its “Sneaker Fund” which goes directly to our Shriners Hospitals for Children through the International Shrine Clown Association. Oh yes, our “Red Sneaker” in the Main Hall always welcomes change or small greenbacks.

Once again, we “tip our hats” to Butch “Sparky” Power and Fair Chairman Emeritus Cliff Bloodworth for running a very efficient workers’ assignment schedule. Everybody reporting to work always had an assignment and a place to work. Oh yes, workers were provided with the necessary time away from their work station. I would hope that everybody had a chance to view the Shriners’ booth in the main Robarts Building.

The signs and video did an excellent job of presenting to the public our job as Shriners and how we get it done.

Our Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt designated March as National Nutrition Month. All Shriners, including the Clowns, should as Imperial Sir Gantt says, “savor the flavor of eating right” so we can do our job of providing for our children. His advocate, Jennifer Hall, gives us the following tips: eat slowly; use smaller plates; choose more fruits and vegetables over processed meals and snacks; notice the unique flavors of different foods; turn off the TV and radio and enjoy the meal; learn where your food comes from and how it came to be on your plate; everything in moderation. Well folks, that is all for this month. Bye, bye and always remember our children at our Shriners hospitals.

I wish to thank all of the snowbirds for their great musicianship over the past several months. We had

a great time! Our wives enjoyed our concert at the Sarasota Fair. The highlight of our Lake Pleasant RV Park concert was their presentation of a check for $2,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. That donation was a great thank you to the Concert Band for all of our rehearsing to prepare for this year’s concert season. It was too bad they cancelled our last concert for the Nobles/Ladies Luncheon scheduled for April. We will

continue to rehearse a small band over the summer months and look forward to having a full Concert Band in the fall. We wish the snowbirds a safe trip north and look forward to their return. Stay healthy and may God bless you.

Kentucky Colonels is a Sahib Shrine unit helping our temple. Like all groups, we are competing

for our members’ time. The quid pro quo here, is what we have to offer, worthy of our members’ time to participate. What we offer is fine dining at a reasonable cost and good fellowship. Give us a look. Until further notice, we will continue to meet at Tara Country Club, September through June, on the 4th Tuesday of each month. Gather at 5:45 p.m., dinner at 6:15 p.m. RSVP at (414) 350-6061 for menu. See you there.

Legion of Honorby Malcolm Van Dyke II, [email protected]

Sahib Legion of Honor Unit saves the day at the March 12 Arcadia Parade. Having sent several

emails to our LOH Unit about available golf cart sitting spaces for this great parade, and having received no responses, the LOH Commander and the LOH Adjutant were in their assigned step off parking space in the Potentate’s golf cart when the female parade marshal approached the adjutant with a sad but true, bad news bears’ story. Seems she had contacted the local JROTC High School Unit, VFW, American Legion, Police and Fire units but nobody could/would provide an American Flag to lead off the 2016 Arcadia Rodeo Parade. Do I need to go further here readers? Guess who was number one person and led the whole Arcadia Rodeo Parade in military uniform and Fez? You got it! Sahib Shrine’s current LOH Commander Bill Summerfield, walking by himself, led the whole parade. Should the LOH pat itself on the back? Yep! U betchem Red Ryder!

With the spring about to pop open with much needed warm weather, and the spring cycle of parades being over, the LOH continues to accept your flags to be retired due to fading, rips, tears, etc. Just place your old friend in a paper or plastic bag and drop off in the front office or Aide’s Office. Your old friend will live on forever, together with and mixed in, with the ashes of a military male or female veteran in the warmth and security of a burial urn someplace in the world. You all do know how your old friend, the American Flag and all retirement flags the Sahib LOH Unit handles,

have an extremely different and highly honorable way of being retired don’t you?

Seems the Army is at it again. Several years ago now (1985), the Army retired the tried and true .45 caliber pistol as their everyday sidearm due to being too heavy and not holding enough rounds. They adopted a sidearm of questionable reliability (M9, 9mm) for several years but now the Army COS is fighting to bring in the Glock 19’s, 15-17 rounds, $500-$600 retail; $320 military bulk buy price, as standard issue. Stand by for further updates.

The Army COS is trying to keep the following ultra-low-key and out of the newspapers: seems he has reversed the policy of burial at Arlington National Cemetery for a group of pioneering female WWII military pilots (WASP - Women’s Airforce Service Pilots) last year to deny them above-the-ground urn space. In 1977, Congress passed a law authorizing their burial at veterans’ cemeteries but does not provide them space at Arlington. However, there are currently some WASP’s buried at Arlington prior to 1977. Movement is underway in both Houses of Congress to change this law.

Your LOH is still in dire need of a noble (LOH or not) with a car that has a 2-inch ball to tow a trailer and golf cart to parades. You must have car insurance that would cover an accident while towing this combo. Contact Commander Summerfield if you can help. Keep in touch.

Oriental Bandby Jim Austin, [email protected]

Have you ever wondered what the winters would be like if so many folks in cold climates did not come

down here to escape their local weather? From about November through, say, May. Remember when we first came (we were living in Illinois at the time) and first discovered Florida. This was back in 1971 when we became Floridians, then in rapid succession, business partners, then a Mason, then into the Shriners, then an Oriental Bandsman. The day that I joined the band, was the day I joined the Shrine, and could not see any sense in not joining that very day, and my wife was happy about the whole procedure.

At the time, Sarasota did not as yet have a temple so we did the Masonic work at Braidentown No. 99, then went to Egypt Shriners for entrance into the Shrine. Joined the “Egyptians” which was one of two Oriental Bands in Tampa at that time. Neither exist today. Along about 1980, this temple was chartered and thirteen members of the “Egyptians” came down here to start this band and now we are the only band left in this state of the original six.

It has been a lot of fun, but sad also, as we have all aged slightly and are just a wisp of the forty-some bandsman we put on the street back in Boston in 1984. In Atlanta in 1985, we were declared the best band in the land, an honor we have received in only one other city. But, this is just history, interesting as it is to us.

Back in March we did a parade over in Arcadia and were well received. One of the Shriners put on a real feast after the parade and it was wonderful. They say

the food could not have been better.A work party cleaned out our trailer one Saturday

and we discovered we have a penchant for holding on to things way beyond the time they should have been thrown or given away. Never again.

As we really haven’t been up to much lately, as we are preparing for the Imperial in Tampa over the 4th of July, let us introduce you to Noble Harold Eady, who is a triple drummer in the band and the person who is in charge of securing the speakers for the Thursday Luncheons here at Sahib Shriners.

Harold was born in Toronto, Canada and has spent most of his working life starting in high school in film labs. Did this type of work while in college, and afterward spent four years as an audio technician for the CBC. Spent some years as manager of the Kinescope television film service. Then things got really good as he married Lady Dorothy in December of 1951. They will be celebrating their 65th anniversary this year. He likes to do lap swimming, and is not a terrible golfer. Lady Dorothy plays tennis 4 or 5 times a week, while they both are fond of snow skiing. Some years ago they had a boat and a fishing career in post-production while in the film services. They are both fond of singing and Noble Harold belongs to a singing group locally and practices in our band, the singing group, and getting those programs for the temple. Other than that, he doesn’t do much. Makes one ashamed of our own weaknesses doesn’t it?

Oriental Guide’s notesby Bruce Porter, [email protected]

The following is taken from “A Short History of the Shrine.”

The Fez, which nobles of the Mystic Shrine have the privilege and honor of wearing, has been handed down through the ages as one of the most significant of all head-dresses. The Fez derives its name from the place where it was manufactured commercially - the holy city of Fez, in Morocco.

Some historians claim it dates back to about A.D. 980, but the name of the Fez or tarboosh does not

appear in Arabic literature until around the 14th century.

Nobles should enjoy the association of their fellows, men whose loyalty, worth and dependability were proven by the fact they are members.

Pleasure is something that one takes out of this life but happiness is something that you share.

Scottish Riteby Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, c [email protected]

Master Architect, the 12th Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, fills in an important

gap in the Hiramic legend of Freemasonry. In our Masonic legend, Hiram, the chief Architect for the construction of King Solomon’s Temple (I Kings 7:13 et. seq.) was unable to complete his duties. At the end of the Master Mason Degree, we are left with the (mythical) dilemma, “how then, was the Temple completed?” History, outside of Masonic lore, indicates it was indeed completed. But, without Hiram, how, and under whose leadership? The 12th Degree supplies an answer to the riddle. According to Masonic mythology,

Adoniram (I Kings 5:14) is selected to complete Hiram’s tasks. The story line of the degree is clearly not intended to provide instruction in Biblical history. In the Biblical narrative, Hiram completes his task, goes home and fades from memory. The 12th Degree is clearly a myth, intended to teach us something. What? What is the degree’s point, its logos?

One possibility is this: the degree alerts us to a change in the Masonic syllabus. It directs our attention to a new course. In the 12th Degree, the Hiramic Legend ceases to be an instructional tool in

We have just gone dark until November, but we went out with a bang. On April 23, our club held

their annual Picnic at Emerson Park in Palmetto. The weather could not have been better and the view out into the inter-coastal waterway was magnificent. Everybody brought one of their favorite dishes to share. Enjoying the surrounding sights, watching the fisherman, the woodpecker in the nearby pole and the various flowers shining in the sunlight was just part of the day’s festivities. The most enjoyable part was the comradery amongst everybody in attendance.

Merv Harris, PP/PSP/PIP, who is also our district’s Wolcott Trustee and his Lady Pat came down from the Villages to share the day with us and to present our club an award to be added to our club banner along with presenting the club with The Dr. Phillip D. Grub Award of the Wolcott Foundation, Inc. for being the number one club in the district for the third year in a row in per capita donations to the Wolcott Foundation.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNAby Peggy Sue Mitchell, High Priestess, pegg [email protected]

Nyla Temple No. 152by Katherine A. Rodd, Queen, [email protected]

Nyla Temple had its installation the first of April. What a beautiful ceremony conducted by Past

Supreme Queen Laura Richardson. She was assisted by Pamela Gates PQ and Bobbie Lander. A welcome address by Queen Katherine Ann Rodd centered on friendships.

The new slate of officers are as follows: the elected officers are Queen-Elect Deanie Jacobi, Junior Past Queen Katherine Ann Rodd PQ, Princess Royal Glenda Dunning, Princess Tirzah Carol Voss, Princess Badoura Pamela Gates PQ, Princess Recorder Donna Kay Duffy, Princess Banker Elaine Ortt PQ. The appointive officers are LaVerne Mims PQ, Donna Fleming, Betty Howard, Barbara Roberge, Marlies Gluck PQ, Rebecca Zeissler, Joann Mueller, Marilyn Carlsen PQ and Jeanette Hocking. Due to a family emergency, the Queen-Elect was not installed, but will be when she returns. Refreshments were served with the help from the DeMolay Chapter following the ceremony. Five days later, we held our first session. It was so nice to see our new officers in place and hear them recite their rituals in only a short time.

Here it is May and plans are being made to attend our Supreme Session in Indianapolis, Indiana and we had our first ceremonial for the new year. We are moving forward by increasing our membership and bringing ladies back that have been away for a while. Come see and get to know the new officers in Nile.

Installation on March 26 went smoothly and everyone I believe had a great time. I know I did.

We had three Grand Line Officers and two Past Grand Officers attend. Our Grand Treasurer Lady Annette Lesser will be visiting our court on April 8; what an honor. The Ill. Sir Carroll Scribner visited us for a short time, but we were glad he was able to take the time from his busy schedule, and of course, to have had our very own Lady Sandy by his side. Our photographer Maria did a fantastic job, however, I don’t think we want any more champagne! That was a cute idea. And no, we did not really partake of any alcohol during our installation. Congratulations to all of our ladies. Many thanks to all the ladies and especially our Past High Priestesses for all of their help. I could not have had or asked for a better installation. A special thanks to first-year Grand Trustee Carol Sue Roberts for being my installing officer, my court momma Joyce Goacher PHP for being my inviting officer, and our very own Installing Grand Marshall Jennie Crawford PGHP, PHP. As always these ladies did a fantastic job and

they still have fun. They make it seem so easy. Thanks again ladies.

If you missed our units’ performances, you missed out on a big time, what a job they all did. I appreciated all of the new skits and had a great time watching and laughing with you. How about the new Songbirds’ new song? All of our units take pride in their skits and work very hard each year to have a different one, I do so admire their dedication and talent.

We will now be concentrating on going to California the middle of May for Grand Council and some of us have lots to do, but I am just as sure we will have a good time. Ladies, we have two new line officers, we want to encourage them and help them, they are just now beginning their journey to the East and what a view and wonderful perspective you get from the East (podium). Ladies, enjoy each year as they go by so quickly. I am certainly looking forward to presiding over our great court! Let’s have a great and fun year and as always, remember we are working for our Shriners Hospitals for Children so that they may have a better life.

Noble Giles Light presented Queen Katherine Rodd a Certificate of Appreciation as speaker at the Men’s Luncheon.

Freemasonry. The 15th and 16th Degrees are centered on the 2nd Temple period; commencing with the 17th Degree no Temple symbolism appears in our work. The instruction begins to draw upon other sources, be they religious, philosophical, historical or otherwise. The 12th Degree therefore signals a transition to a new, different way of learning, thinking and growing.

A second possibility: the degree focuses our attention on pursuing wisdom. Heretofore, our attention has been directed toward demonstrating proper conduct, continuing education, controlling passions, attaining knowledge, exemplifying virtue and cultivating morality. The 12th Degree suggests that all this preparation, all these endeavors, have had as their aim the pursuit of wisdom. Indeed, the narrative of the degree relies heavily upon language found in Proverbs and the Book of Wisdom.

Still a third point of the degree might be political. Remember, the basic plot of this degree concerns selecting a competent, qualified leader. While con-sidering the deep, esoteric, philosophical messages always veiled within our work, it is well not to overlook the obvious.

A salient passage that demonstrates a political message is “…no republican government can long endure when the people cease to select for their chief magistrates the best and the wisest of their statesmen.” (Over the last ten years, your writer has observed that about half of the Craft groans upon hearing this statement during the degree, no matter what administration is in office. Ouch.) So if a lesson of the degree might be political (but not partisan) and we should select “wise statesmen” as our leaders, perhaps we should pause to consider what a “statesman” is or looks like.

The late J. Rufus Fears, a distinguished professor of history and the classics at the University of Oklahoma, suggests four characteristics. First, a statesman must have a bedrock of principles. We may reflect on those principles espoused by our Founding Fathers, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” Second, a statesman must have a moral compass. A moral compass recognizes absolute right and wrong; it is a flavor of morality that is more Kantian than utilitarian. Third, a statesman has a vision. Finally, a true statesman is able to build a consensus to pursue and attain the vision.

. . .continued from page 32Scottish Rite

Our thoughts might naturally be directed to the (relative) quality of our local, state and federal leaders and our instant elections – and those thoughts are fair game and should be. But we do well to remember that Freemasonry is largely about self-development and improvement. Our degrees are not about “them,” they are about “us.” Perhaps the lesson of the 12th Degree, in its completion of the Hiramic Legend, its discourses about wisdom or its political message, is really about us as individuals. We are to seek wisdom. We should strive to be leaders within our arenas of competence. We are to become statesmen in our own realms; men of character, of principle, morality, vision and leadership, to become men that others might chose to follow and emulate.

The Scottish Rite’s Degrees will next be conferred on October 29 (including the 12th Degree) and November 5. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:45 p.m. dinner. Our next meeting is May 9. An educational program will be presented by Brother Kenneth Carolan, 32nd Degree.

Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He long ago gave up on the statesman and vision thing and will be satisfied with obtaining a small portion of that elusive thing called wisdom.
