  • Society Notice Board Editor’s Comments: Well by the time you read this the AGM will have been held and I hope you were there !!! If there is anything to report, then it will be in the May issue. With the start of BST and hopefully the worst of the winter weather behind us, it’s good to look forward to longer and warmer days ahead enjoying our hobby. So send in your reports of interesting trips for our Days Out feature (to the ed). On sending in reports, we could also do with some more of your steam / early diesel spotting exploits for the All Our Yesterdays feature, so please send any articles to Alan Gilmour (details on page 2) The current railway scene continues to ring the changes with more livery changes. One Railway has finally bit the dust (before and after liveries can be seen on the front cover and page 27). FGW has begun repainting its Cl.57/3s used on sleeper services, with 57305 appearing in the same matching blue as its refurbished HST sets. EWS Cl.67s are also being repainted silver for the start of the Wrexham service. As we go to press it appears DRS is to release its first 10 Cl.66s, which will be eagerly snapped up, so expect at least one more livery variation (good news, if they can keep up, for the model manufacturers… not so good for my pocket!) On the preservation scene, 2008 will see many more special events amongst which is 60th year of the start of British Railways. So if you are attending any interesting events then write a report. I also make another plea to those of you who are active members of preservation societies…please send in reports / photos. It doesn’t matter how long, on interesting events, galas, special movements, unusual visiting locos etc. Remember your contribution may be the one reason another member visits your society and therefore brings in much needed income…I certainly have visited sites based on the few bits of info sent in over the last year. When writing a report, please include info on access, ease of seeing stock and at what locations and anything you think may help aid a visitor. For those of you that have wondered what has happened to Rolling Stock Changes, good news, it is hoped it will return from the May issue. Please be aware that is very difficult in the commercially sensitive railway world of today to both obtain and have permission to publish information. Membership Matters: Membership Rates: Annual: £15.00 Five Year Rate: £70.00 (currently discounted) New Members: The following new members have joined this month: Alan Rogerson (Derbyshire), Gary Jackson (Herts), Stephen Summers (Ayrshire) - a warm welcome to you all Magazine Submissions: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine, colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably high resolution digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. The latest date for articles / info for the next magazine is Friday 25th April 2008. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please. Magazine Contributors: Thanks to Eddie Rathmill, Stephen Skewes, Lawrie Williams, Chris James, Ian Feather, Paul Bright, Ron Sansome, Stuart Nye, Malcolm Castell, DJ Walters, Mark Wallace, Brian Dericote, Derek Sneddon, Paul Tarrant, Mike Rumens, Chris Stanley, Martin Willcock, Nigel Hoskins, Mark Turner, John Palin, Ray Smith, Bob Brown, Martin Hall & Trevor Roots. AUSTRALIA - a holiday in November 2006: My daughter did a 6 month nursing stint in Brisbane and it gave my wife and I the excuse to see part of this country. Australia is so big that all of Europe can fit into its area. The journey I took seemed far, yet on the map it was hardly noticeable. We arrived on November 9th in the morning and after checking in to our hotel in Ascot, on the outskirts of Brisbane we decided to explore. Somehow I managed to find the Central station with its 8 underground suburban platforms. Queensland Railways use 1067mm gauge. It was midday and very quiet, I was thinking where is the action? I saw 6 emus before spending the day discovering the city. England’s cricketers were playing here and the city was full of supporters. The atmosphere was wonderful. The rivalry and banter between the fans was good humoured and the bars were full with both sets of supporters enjoying themselves. That night I returned to Ascot by train. It was another story this time, rush hour and plenty of units. On the way back I passed the depot at Bowen Hills and saw my first Australian locomotives 2498, 2827 and 2837. The next day November 10th, my daughter took my wife to see the shops…I escaped! I bought a Brisbane area day zone pass, I cannot remember the price but it was cheap. I discovered that Roma Street station on the south side of the city was the place for the main line departures, about 6 a day! But the plus point was this station was a delightful open air station and November is the Australian spring with temperatures in the high 20s and the south-north freight avoiding line leaving from there it was a great place to be. I also discovered the freight avoiding line rejoined the system at Bowen Hills. Things were looking up. Today I copped 94 units 9 locomotives and 1 tilting train.

The next few days were spent going to the Gold Coast, Australia Zoo and other touristy things….must keep the other half happy...ed I hired a car and the idea was to get to the Great Barrier Reef. The first night we booked into a hotel at Bundaberg. This was on the main line, although main line in Australia is not the same as in Europe. I went to the station and 6 car 5301/6301/8301/8302/6302/5302 ‘City of Maryborough’ called. I asked about freight and was told one would be coming through in about 90 minutes so I returned and saw (and photographed) Pacific National PNO 11. Bundaberg is also famous for Ginger Beer and Rum. The rum distillery had guided tours and we booked. Free samples were included and I was driving. What a bummer! However, we had to wait about an hour for our tour so I wandered off and discovered a depot full of narrow gauge diesel locomotives used to transport the sugar cane. They did not have numbers but were all named. I saw ‘Barolin’, ‘Calawos’, ‘Ceslfield’, ‘Elliot’, ‘Fairydale’, ‘Margam’ and ‘Vulcan’. Within the factory area, the trains were shunted by a road tractor. The next day travelling up north ‘Givelda’ passed over a level crossing. The next day (16th) I went north to Rockhampton. The railway and road ran parallel for quite a bit of the journey and a few freights were seen. Rockhampton had a reasonable sized depot and trains also ran in

  • the centre of the road for a while. It also had a small railway museum with 1614 on display. I was not allowed around the depot although most could be seen from the station.

Returning south I came to Gladstone, a town with an iron ore smelter and freights with two locomotives hauling 60 wagons, two more locomotives and another 50 or so wagons. After a wonderful visit to the Great Barrier Reef, despite having no railways, we returned to Brisbane. I bought an Australian railway magazine and read about this place called Red Bank (not Manchester) with a dump of 40+ locos. I decided to visit the Railway museum at Ipswich, A total disappointment. More commercial than railways but the plus point was that I passed Red Bank outward and got off on the return. It is a large locomotive workshop with a dump outside on four lines, well spaced, which allowed me to see almost everything there. I walked to the depot and was given permission to go around with a guide. A decent sized shed and on the outskirts was a dump that had 4 locomotives 1177, 1200, 1225 and 1401. My guide told me he came to this depot 10 years ago and these were there then!

Our holiday was now just passed the half way stage and a visit to Sydney was a must. I wanted to go by train but it took so long and a flight was just over an hour for a similar price with Virgin planes. We took the train from the airport and on arrival at the central station I was amazed at the number of electric units there. Here the gauge is 1435mm. However, we had to find our hotel so off I went. The next day we did tourist things again like the Opera House, the Tyne Bridge lookalike and other things tourists do. It was mid afternoon and the appeal of the shops for my wife Audrey and daughter Kathryn was magnetic. I was delighted they wanted to shop and I escaped again to Central station. A station too big to cover.

  • Cl.C older suburban unit 3600 Redfern, 23 November 2006

    Cl.T suburban unit D1066 Redfern, 23 November 2006

From memory it must have had at least 8 through platforms and 8-10 terminus platforms all served by suburban and Inter-city emus. There were also 3 platforms beyond that received the main line trains. I saw dozens of units but missed as many. I still copped almost 200 units that day. The units were a strange mix. All of the new sets were in a set formation whereas the older suburban sets seemed to be made up with anything available as long as both ends had driving trailers. I met an enthusiast that day and he told me if I wanted to see some locomotives the yard between Clyde and Granville normally had 4-6 on. The next day I checked this out. The train took me through Lewisham, Ashfield and Croydon, it was like being at home and I passed this yard and saw some locomotives. The plus point was on leaving Sydney I found the next station out, Redfern, had all of the lines reduced to 8 so everything that left Central could be seen! Well maybe mid day but in the rush hour so much came through that a lot was still missed but it was much better than Central. Then the sound of home, an XPT set (Britains HSTs) passed through. Virtually identical to ours it was a pleasant sight and I went on to see 10 of the 18 in service, although I am from “up north”, where the football teams let in lots of goals, I did not see ‘City of Newcastle’. I still saw many more units.

The next day, Saturday 25th, produced Indian Pacific NR25 arriving after the 3 day journey from Perth. Alongside was an XPT. NR27 backed onto the train to remove the empty stock. I then went to see Bondi Beach, returning for the evening rush hour and still saw new units. Bye to Sydney and the next day we flew back to Brisbane. Only 2 days left before returning home so I went back to Red Bank and there were new locomotives on the depot then back to Roma Street. This time I saw no new units, but picked up 2 passing freight locomotives. This was almost the end of my spotting as the last day was to be spent at the man made beach on the riverbank of Brisbane. A bonus was 2 more freight locomotives. I came away needing only 7 units from the area, so I did ok.

Flying back we had a change in Singapore and I saw a couple of units from the air (didn’t you get the nos...ed.) I would love to go back. The people are friendly and laid back, the spring temperature is good although in summer it is too hot.

Preservation News Severn Valley Railway: by Stephen Skewes The SVR is now back in running order over the full 16 miles between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire. It has been 9 months since the summer storms of 2007 damaged the line so severely. The final essential repairs to rejoin the two halves of the route were completed early in March, at a total cost of over £3.5 million (of which about £100,000 remains to be found). While the SVR was under repair, and trains were not running, the opportunity was taken to spruce up several stations along the line and to cut down excess foliage elsewhere. The results of these efforts were easily noticeable, giving attractive new vantage points for lineside photographers. Full passenger services were resumed at the Easter weekend with an intensive timetable. Amid much rejoicing and publicity, the public returned in droves, despite the cold weather, and there were no hitches or delays. Respectful credit is due to SVR's management, various outside contractors, and volunteers from the SVR and other heritage railways who together engineered this fantastic achievement. Having received stage-by-stage reports from the professionals leading the work, HMRI informed SVR that the repairs would not need formal inspection before the resumption of public services. Thanks are also due to very many people and organisations who made donations, large and small, towards the cost of the work. The SVR's own flood appeal has now brought in well over £500,000. The 5 steam locomotives used over the Easter weekend were: GWR 4-6-0 No. 7812 ‘Erlestoke Manor’ (only recently emerged from a long overhaul in the SVR workshops at Bridgnorth), LMS 4-6-0 'Black 5' No. 45110, GWR 2-6-2 Large Prairie Tank No. 5164, GWR 2-6-2 Small Prairie Tank No. 4566, and SDJR 2-8-0 No 88 (visiting from West Somerset Railway). GWR 4-6-0 No. 7802 ‘Bradley Manor’ was to have taken part also but was found to be suffering from brake problems and did not appear. Some secondary repairs, and clearing-up at some sites, remain to be completed. At Highley, for example, where the original Up Starter signal was washed away in the June flood, the new signal was not connected in time and some flagmen were needed for the re-opening services.

Nottingham: After the Light Rail 07 Conference and Exhibition, NET was awarded the Light Rail Operator of the Year Award for 2007 Manchester: Stagecoach, who took over the Metrolink Organisation, has decided to overhaul all its trams in the same way as it did in Sheffield. Glasgow: More commuters are using the Subway Park and Ride schemes, where with a fare of £3.50, they can both park and have a return journey on the Subway. Birmingham: Problems have arisen, and if the controversy about Congestion Charges is not sorted out, the extension to Fiveways and the Black Country could be in jeopardy. Blackpool: Infrastructure work to replace old worn out track is progressing on schedule, and it is hoped to open the whole system for the summer season.

WAGON NEWS: With the loss of the Anglesey Aluminium traffic, more lorries will be used to transport aluminium to Europe, now is this crazy or what! !! The Fort William aluminium traffic, however, has been reinforced as Alcan is increasing its aluminium production. It is hoped that two new freight terminals will be developed in the South East at Bexley and Portsmouth. It is believed by many people in the railway business that there could be a significant increase in freight traffic, but it will have to be looked at carefully and with the takeover of EWS by Deutsche Bahn, the possibilities are endless. New Arrivals: More JSA sliding hood steel carriers have been converted for VTG as VTG4125-4134. They will be used on steel traffic from Corus South Wales to the West and North of England. It was built in 1953 by Metro-Cammell and DB989000-989088 were all unfitted. They had Morton brake gear, open front axle boxes and three whole disc wheels. The vehicle had pivoting arms, which lifted the body and allowed it tilt and discharge the ballast. It was fitted with Oleo buffers and Instanter couplings and the later models had eight shoe vacuum brakes. They were TOPS coded as ZJV and the examples on the southern region were re-coded as ‘Merdog’ as they were coupled in ballast trains with ‘Dogfish’ ballast hoppers. In total 639 vehicles were built from 1954-1961, using numbers

Thanks to member Lawrie Williams of Dagenham for sharing with us what is very probably the earliest dated report ever to appear in this section of your magazine….56 years ago !!!. 1951 was the year of the “Festival of Britain”, trams were still operating and not due to cease until 1952, and trolleybuses carried on until 1962. • Location ‘Spot’light by Trevor Roots

This feature is intended as a guide to various popular spotting locations around the country and will include how to get there and what rolling stock you might see in a constantly changing railway scene. If anyone can provide similar details on other locations please let me know or if you want a particular location reviewed in future editions. Please also let me know if any details are wrong or you have updates. Contact [email protected] Complementing last month’s feature on Glasgow Central, this month we feature Glasgow’s second main line station:

GLASGOW QUEEN STREET STATION Location: OS Map Ref: NS592 655 Glasgow Queen Street is the smaller second main line terminus station in the city and third busiest behind Central and Edinburgh Waverley. It is hemmed in beween George Street to the south and Queen Street High Level Tunnel to the north just beyond Cathedral Street bridge. As with Central there are High Level and Low Level stations. Queen Street (High Level) exclusively serves the north eastern coasts of Scotland and also the busy central belt corridor to Edinburgh with which it serves the remainder of northern Scotland.. The Low Level station serves the northern suburbs of Greater Glasgow. Unlike Central there is easy access to Glasgow Underground via the adjacent Buchannan Street station.

    all three DMU classes, First ScotRail 156493, 170409, 170415 & 158735 looking towards the concourse in platforms 7, 5, 4 & 3 respectively

Glasgow Queen Street, 31 July 2007 Access: Foot: Queen Street is within 10 mins easy walking distance of Central to the south. Rail: Extensive services from Greater Glasgow, the central belt, eastern and northern Scotland. Bus: Being in a city centre location, numerous services are available with the Buchannan Street bus station situated only a few hundred yards to the north, which is an interchange for long distance services. Road: As with Central the Queen Street station lies within a grid system of busy one-way roads. North Street to the west gives access to/from the M8 (junction 16), 3/4 mile to the north. Cathedral Street to the north and George Street to the south give access from the A8 to the east, just over 1/2 mile. To the west lies the minor road, Dundas Street with the pedestrianised Buchannan Street just beyond. The adjacent Buchannan Galleries Shopping Centre has a car park.

  • Station Layout: Glasgow Queen Street consists of the high level terminal station and the through underground low level station. There are automatic ticket barriers to all platforms. High Level: Queen Street (High Level) is a fairly small smart and tidily kept terminus from which tracks head north through Queen Street High Level Tunnel below the Buchannan Galleries Shopping Centre immediately beyond the end of the platforms. The main entrance off George Street is effectively hidden by an office block with another side entrance off Dundas Street adjacent to the Buchannan undergound station. There are only seven platforms, six main and one short, numbered 1-7 from west to east. None are very long, with platforms 3 & 4 barely holding six cars and only three cars in the short platform 1. It is non-electrified and is operated by 2 & 3 car DMUs. Two-thirds of the station is covered by a light and airy (particularly if the sun shines !!) single span part glass vaulted train shed, the only one left in Scotland, with the outer platform ends exposed between Cathedral Street bridge and the tunnel. Platform 1 is largely exposed.

showing Cathedral Street bridge and the vaulted trainshed beyond. Glasgow Queen Street, 31 July 2007

Low Level: Glasgow Queen Street (Low Level) comprises two platforms separated by a central row of supporting columns. The platforms are numbered 8 & 9 and are aligned roughly east / west and can be reached very quickly from the ground level platforms. The Low Level line runs underground for a short distance to High Street to the east where a projected connection is being proposed under the Cross Rail scheme to connect with the parallel Central (Low Level) line a short distance to the south. This scheme would overcome the lack of a through rail connection between north and south across Glasgow. To the west the low level line runs underground via Charing Cross then into the open crossing the Central low level line near the SECC and connecting at Finnieston East Junction.

Passenger Traffic: Considering the limited capacity of the station, it is very busy, being the starting point for the regular Edinburgh shuttles. In previous years these were operated by the push-pull Cl.27/2s and then Cl.47/7 with a short rake of coaches. Today all services out of Queen Street are operated by 2 & 3 car Cls.156, 158 & 170 DMUs. First ScotRail is the sole operator, with the shorter distance services under the auspices of Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT). A number of Cls.156 & 170s are painted in the carmine & cream livery of SPT. The low level line is operated by SPT Cls.318, 320 & 334 EMUs. Freight Traffic: None. Best Spotting/Photography Sites: Everything can be seen from all the four available platform ends. Depending on what angle is required for photography, all give slightly differing views depending on the sun, though the shortest 3 / 4 is the least favourable. On a sunny morning as was the case in accompanying photos, the best platforms are 5 / 6 or 7. Conversely the afternoon sun would favour being on platform 1 / 2. Being short platforms it is relatively quick to move around to get shots from all parts of the station. All the platforms are beyond the ticket barriers. Facilities: Being a major city centre station, there are several food outlets on the concourse and unlimited choice adjacent the station.

  • Diary of a Loco Spotter by Eddie Rathmill 1984 – Part 1

The Railbus had arrived. I added a whole new class to my wanted list and then found that there were going to be hundreds of new units! Well I wasn't going searching for them ..... (not this week, anyhow). After a visit to Derby, Tinsley and Barrow Hill on January 7th I decided to go and look for my Southern electrics, Brighton seemed like a good idea and so off I went on the 18th and a funny thing happened; I found myself noting down the side numbers of one or two emus! There were also several renumbered units and I began to wonder whether I had seen these before or not…it was suddenly all getting very confusing. Reading on the 28th, with nothing new noted down apart from two re-numbered 47s. Up to Ayr on February 8th where I had a big disappointment. I had gone looking for DMUs 52006 and 59302 to be told that the first was working between Edinburgh and Oban and the second had passed me on route. In anticipation I headed back to Glasgow but crossed with 59302 again, I should have stayed where I was !! A big consolation, that day, though, was the copping of nine Glasgow underground vehicles leaving me wanting just two, so the trip had not been totally in vain. Derby was next on the 25th with 58008 being copped, together with a few class 141s. Then it was Swindon on March 7th where 50007 was seen with its new nameplate ‘Sir Edward Elgar’. London, a fortnight later and a visit to Southall, where my wish was granted, 54281 was there! I also saw 210001 and 210002 plus several EMU cops and I realised that I was now down to 6 Southern Region units (not counting re-numberings) These were 2303 / 3203 / 3303 / 3310 / 5830 (new) and 6063. I checked out my Scottish and Midland list, still one of each (314213 / 317310). A determined effort was needed. My next loco cops were 56130, 56131, and 56132, all at Crewe Works on March 24th. This had been a relatively easy class to collect as I had seen each one very shortly after having being admitted to traffic. ….lucky you, I never did get all mine before scrapping started, ed. 56133-135 were the only ones I wanted and I had even seen them under construction. Another visit to the Midlands followed the day after and then my wife joined me for what was going to become a regular annual visit to Cornwall on the 28th. This time we stayed at Falmouth and during the three days holiday I managed to cop DMUs 51303 / 51305 / 51318 / 51320 and 59470. So, just three DMUs left, two Scottish, and one Eastern. April 7th and I fancied a trip to Newcastle with a visit to South Gosforth depot. Metro units 4001 and 4002 were both inside and these, together with 4034 (seen at Central Station), reduced my wanted total to two - 4028 and 4083. A fortnight later and being pulled by 47434, I was on my way to Preston. Then 87020 replaced the Brush 4 and I headed off for Glasgow. That was some day - 52006, 59302 and 314213 were all seen and my last two Glasgow underground units (126/129) were cleared.

Switzerland Electric 11401 which was reported as sold to Club San Gottardo (Mendrisio) but is currently stored in Bellinzona works, I believe that SBB-Cargo are not selling any locos, as they are concerned these could eventually be sold on to competitors. Therefore all locomotives entering preservation are now understood to be on loan. It is reported in the March 2008 edition of ‘EISENBAHN AMATEUR’ that Re4/4 electric locos 11101 & 11120 retain the necessary safety equipment to work mainline trains although normally confined to Basel SBB for empty train moves. Meanwhile the Ae4/7 electrics hired by Rail4Chem, 10950 & 11010 have been fitted with ZUB and currently stand in Basel awaiting their planned use on the fuel trains from Cornaux. Thursday the 13th and RE4/4’s working for SBB were 11108 on RE2920 the 06:15 Erstfeld to Zurich, 11159 with RE2142 the 21:30 Zurich to Olten (ICN Substitute) and 421396 leading EC190 the 20:56 Lindau to Zurich. Portugal On the 3rd 1429 was noted acting as Lisboa Santa Apolonia docks pilot, the loco was previously part of the Poceirão fleet, I’m not sure if this is part of some swap or just a one off, but by the 8th 1415 had taken up these pilot duties. Meanwhile and still on the 3rd 1442 was one of the passenger side pilots and 1163+1186 have beenparked up for weeks now, in headshunt under road bridge which passes over SA yards. It would also appear that 5611 has moved from the freight sector to the passenger sector. It was noted heading IC523 the 09:30 Lisboa Santa Apolonia to Porto Campanha on Saturday the 8th March. A further, entirely covered in grafitti 5600, was on IC528 the 16:52 Porto Campanha to Lisboa Santa Apolonia, again on the 8th, the numbers were totally obscured but this may be 5609, but if anyone can correct me, please feel free.
