Most students at Bryan High know

all about Rudder High School opening

next year in a wing of the silver cam- pus, but what many students do not

know is that an additional high school

will be starting up next year.

The other high school is temporarily

named Early College High School and

will allow students to earn up to 60 col-

    lege credit hours concurrently.

    Christina Richardson, a former

A.V.I.D. teacher at BHS, is preparing

for the school as the new principal.

The school is a national concept. The Bryan School District visited three

early college high schools and put the

idea of having one here on the table,

    Richardson said.

Richardson decided to take on the

task of writing a grant to get money

start the high school and was the rst

choice for the new schools principal.

Since I worked with the A.V.I.D

    program, dealt with higher education,

and wrote the grant, the district thought

I was qualied for the job, Richardson

    said.

    Richardson is currently seeking

eighth graders to be a part of the one

hundred students that will be in the

    freshman class.

I am looking for students who make

decent grades and are willing and ready

    to accept the challenge, Richardson

    said.

    Although the program is targeting

    low-income, rst generation college

    students, anyone can apply.

Right now the applicant pool con-

sists of half low income and half mid-

dle class kids as well as representationsof kids from all ethnic backgrounds,

    Richardson said.

Richardson is hoping that the diverse

freshman class will be able to give the

high school a clever name and school

    colors.

She is also hoping that in the long run

her freshman class will earn their col-

lege credits, graduate high school, and

then move on to a four year college.

Currently I am just trying to make

the school happen; there are a lot of

things right now that are uncertain,

    Richardson said.

Some of the uncertainties of the

Early College High School include the

fact that students will not currently be

able to be involved in activities such as

sports, band, and choir that are offered

    at BHS.

Also it is undecided whether or not

the students will have a prom or if they

will be able to attend other school danc-

    es.

I know when a 13 year old thinks

they wont have a high school prom it

scares them because they are only think-ing of the fantasy of what high school

is; we are looking for kids who can see

beyond that and who are determined,

    Richardson said.

Richardson said that she and others

who are invested in the program have

put a lot of faith and hope into it be-

ing successful; and although there are a

lot of unanswered questions she knows

that the school will be a success.

    New Opportunity for 07-08 Freshmen

Student Wins TruckSenior Haley Wendler took home grand champion

honors at the 2007 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

in the junior commercial steer division.

This year was Wendlers fth and nal time to com-

pete in the event, where she has placed in the top eight

    two other years.

For earning the top honors Wendler received a 2007Ford F-150 truck.

Wendler was responsible for three steers and had to

feed and care for them in addition to keeping regular

records of their progress to be presented to livestock

    show judges.

Wendler also had to take a test and go through an in-

terview process as part of her competition.

The win was made extra special for Wendler because

her father won the same title 28 years ago.

    Scholarships: Worth Your WhileRacheal Daylong

Staff writerBeing a senior is pretty hard. Even if you get block

periods and easy classes you still have tons of work

to do. Seniors apply for colleges, apply for scholar-

ships, apply for nancial aid and still want to have

    fun.

The only way to know about all of this stuff is

    through experience.

You may think that scholarships are impossible to

obtain, but if you know how to apply for them cor-

rectly it becomes a more plausible goal.

As a Bryan High student, an endless amount ofscholarships are available to you. Not only can you

apply at the scholarship ofce with Mrs. Muth there

are thousands more available online at web sites like

    www.fastweb.com.

Many scholarships are available and many go un-

used each year. There has already been one local

scholarship not used this year at the BHS scholar-

    ship ofce.

There are many seniors that do apply and receive

    scholarship money at Bryan High.

Thousands of dollars are awarded every yearto Bryan High students, scholarship advisor Mrs.

Muth said. 70-80 percent of all seniors have at least

    one scholarship.

Many seniors have already recieved schol-

    arships.Sarah McDermond was awarded $24,000

for the National Merit Recognition Award

and Casey Gomez recently recieved $250 for

    his scholarship.

If you think that applying for scholarships is

useless and that you could never get one there is

hope. Luckily, seniors have some helpful advice that

could make applying a lot easier.

McDermond said that if you are worried about the

time you need to complete scholarships then start

early.Senior Jared Longoria advises students to utilize

school holidays to work on scholarships and to at

    least try for a scholarship.

You should never give up because you never

know how many other people are applying, Longo-

ria said. You have nothing to lose other than the

    potential scholarship money.

Although thousands of students apply for scholar-

ships each year you still have a big chance of receiv-

    ing one.

Mrs. Muth recommends applying for local schol-arships because there are less people applying for

    those.

You never know if you could get a scholarship, but

    to

    i n -

    c r e a s e

    your chances

apply for scholar-ships that especially ap-

    ply to you.

If you have a higher income go for scholarships

not based on income, senior Karen Shull said.

If you think you are not smart enough, or you need

some help, make sure and get your essays edited,

    Longoria said.

If you need any help with scholarships just drop

by the counselors ofce and see Mrs. Muth.

Mrs. Muth is your best friend. said Steven Cool-

ey. She can help a lot.Scholarships can make college less hectic and

more worthwhile. Apply if you havent and Good

    Luck!

There are also many scholarships that are available that fall under

the category of oddball. Just get on the internet and do some

searching to see which ones you qualify for. Some examples:

Have you applied for any scholarships?

Easy and quick tips to help prepare yourself

    You know what? Im

    tired of just kicking it

    to tae-bo and learning

    that Its Not a Scene,

    Its a Arms Race. At

    this point Id rather lis-

ten to the best of Yoko

    Ono or Kenny Rog-

    ers Christmas CD than

    have to hear an over-

    played, tired song one

    more time.

Although I love Akon and Fall Out Boy , give

me a break . . . Im tired of the same songs and

Im tired of the same ol same ol, the usual,

    the unoriginality.

Like how many CSI, Law and Order, or Re-

ality spin-offs do we need? Is Flavor of Love

really the best show idea that VH1 can come

up with? I admit it is hilarious but its also pa-

thetic and spin-off (Surreal Life), of a spin-off

(Strange Love), of a spin-off (Flavor of Love).

And how come on any restaurant menu (Ben-

nigans, Chilis, Cheddars, etc.) you can always

nd some version of a burger, chicken tenders,

or fettuccine alfredo? This sameness always

ows down into our scheduled lunches that

give us Cavatini Monday and Spicy Chicken

    Tender Wednesday.

I know Im being sarcastic, but sometimes I

really do worry about where this world is head-

ing. Are all the good ideas gone? I feel like if

everything doesnt stop being so similar, one

day we may live in a place where everything is

    gray and is non-stop Deja-Vu.

Will there ever be another visionary like

Martin Luther King Junior or Walt Disney? As

the cartoons die so do the principals of civil

    rights.

Are we the condent, charismatic, and intel-

ligent generation America is dying to lay their

hands on or are we too busy watching MTV

    re-runs?

Yes, same can be safe, classic, and easy but

I will bet that no one will describe it as unique

    daring, and innovative.

Go ahead and watch the season nale of

your favorite guilty pleasure because its what

makes you happy, but the next day try to pay

attention in class you may learn something.

Ever heard of March Madness? Thats exactly what it is, madness. So

many teams, but only one can be crowned the champion.

When the big tournament starts all the records and standings are out

the window. 2007 has been the year of the upsets. This is the place where

dreams can come true or be shattered in the same beat. Good teams get

beat by unknown teams by going into the game with a big head. Top

ranked teams cannot be compared to unranked teams by rankings. In thebig tournament you get sized up by skills. Its either go big or go home.

March Madness is all about the numbers. It gets narrowed down to the

sweet sixteen, after they play it gets narrowed down again to the elite

eight, from there is what is called the nal four. If your team is lucky

enough to make it that far and win then they get to go to the big dance.

Many teams believed to go far often fall short. Some teams are very surprised when the game

is over because they didnt think they should have lost the game. When doing interviews they

want to blame everybody else but themselves.

I hate to watch a game when its clear the refs are going for a certain team because they will

start calling ticky tack touch fouls on the other team or when the refs decide the outcome of

the game instead of just letting them play. The big tournament is mostly about strategy and skill. If an unranked team comes into the

game with a great plan and strategy, and executes it perfectly they could come out on top. I think

if a team puts their hearts into every game they play in the tournament they will have a greater

chance of winning. The road to the championship is a challenging and hard road to travel. Some

teams are expected to make the championship game and some are not expected to even make it

out the rst round. Teams will also try to make it further than their rivals and have the pleasure

    of sending them home.

March Madness is a crazy time in college basketball and 2007 was no different.

2007: The Year of The Upsets?

Although having your drivers licenses is fun because

you gain freedom from family and get to cruise around

town, you are likely to run into quite a few wackos androadblocks while cruising the mean streets of BCS.

Construction! What is up with construction? Its ev-

erywhere! Its like both Bryan and College Station got

together and decided to start major construction on all

    primary roadways.

Some roads are under construction and some con-

struction has been started and has been left unnished

for a sunnier day but is still there to upset you.

Now instead of taking 5 minutes to get to school it

takes many students an extra 10 to 15 minutes to drivethrough various construction sites, deal with sleezy con-

struction workers, and other frustrated drivers.

People on bikes, scooters, Roller Blades, and other

means of transportation that are not motorized need to

stay off the streets; that white line that says bike lane

isnt going to save you. You know we all want to run

you over, so just stick to the park and sidewalks.

Cars with ridiculous bumper stickers, window hangy-

thingys, giant decals that reiterate what type of car you

are driving, stickers that read your last name or sayGit-R-Done, and absurd paint jobs just need to get off

the road. You think your car is so cool, but it looks like

a Japanese cartoon is playing on the side of your car.

Other things that annoy many drivers are people who

leave their blinkers on forever, people that dont yield

or yield too much, and people who exit the highway and

cross both lanes going 100 mph.

You totally get the picture, thanks for understanding.

Youll Need More than a Dream to Understand this Movie

    By Tiffany Torres

    Staff Writer

    Genre: Action/ Drama/ Suspense

    Rating: R-Strong Graphic Violence and

    Some Language

    Run Time: 2 hr 4

    min

    Synopsis: A marine

    sniper and his spot-

ter are on a mission in

Ethiopia, Africa andthings go grim. After

    the whole ordeal the

    marine shooter, Bob

    Lee Swagger (Mark

    Wahlberg), is so trau-

    matized and mournful

    he retires from the ma-

    rines and stays all alone

    in the Colorado moun-

    tains with just his dog,

Sam, for years.Being the best trig-

ger-man the marines had ever seen, he gets

called for research work because there may

be an attempt to assassinate the President.

Out of patriotic duty, Swagger accepts.

But, this project turns out to be a setup.

Now, the country is on a manhunt to nd

Swagger; he himself is on a hunt to nd

justice against the corrupt government of-

    cials who framed him.

Review: It seemed like the movie com-

pany, Paramount, didnt spend a lot of

money for promotions because not a lot of

people even knew what Shooteris about.

    Maybe they spent all of

    the money on the elabo-

    rate ght sequences.

    Mark Wahlberg from

    the Italian Job: 2003

and Marky Mark andthe Funky Bunch Kids

    played the lead action

hero and killed a lot of

    the bad guys and looked

    good doing it.

    This conspiracy driven

plot had so many ties to

    the JFK assassination

    and even to todays gov-

    ernment administration

    that viewers couldnthelp but laugh.

There were a lot killings and gory wounds

and the movie pretty much showed all of

the blood that came with it, for someone

that usually gets grossed out I thought

    those scenes were awesome.

Shooter is so worth paying for the ex-

    pensive movie ticket, maybe twice.

    By Racheal Daylong

    Staff Writer

Genre: Thriller/ Romance Rating: Rated PG-13 for some violent content, disturbing images, thematic

    material and brief language.

Run Time: 1 Hour 50 Minutes

Synopsis: InPremonition a woman (Sandra Bullock) wakes up on different

days of the week to nd her husband is dead, then on a different day to nd he is

    alive.

Throughout the experience she tries to prevent his death and other situations

    in her life.

Review: If suspense and thinking is not the type of movie for you I dont rec-

    ommendPremonition .

There are many confusing scenes in the movie and it requires either multipleviewings or discussion between viewers to completely understand what went

    on.

The movie overall is mildly slow moving, but this only builds suspense.

It is very suspenseful and leaves the viewer hanging on the edge of their seat.

The twists are unexpected and all are consequences of the changes she makes in

the rst parts of the movie.

This movie reminds many viewers ofThe Buttery Effect. It has a similar feel

considering that in both movies the main character goes back in time to change

    certain aspects of his/her life.

    HoweverPremonition is differ-

ent in that all of situations hap-pen within a week.

There is more than a suspense

aspect in the movie. Bullock not

only attempts to save her hus-

    band throughout the movie, she

tries to rekindle the once passion-

    ate ame of their youth.

    Bullock plays a convincing role

of a concerned mother and wife.

Her husband in the movie (Julian

McMahon) plays his role of thewavering husband perfectly.

Child actors usually ruin a few

scenes but not so in this movie.

The children act well and do not just seem to be reciting a script.

The ending is awful and desperately needs to be rewritten. Overall the movie

is worth a viewing but is not nearly as entertaining as 300.

Wahlberg Scores with Shooter Hannibal Not RisingBy Kayla Ramsdell

    Staff Writer

Genre: Drama / Horror / Thriller

Rating: R for strong grisly violent content and some language and

    sexual references

Running Time: 1 hour 57 minutes

Synopsis:Hannibal Risingbegins near the end of World War II, a young

Hannibal Lecter is left all alone to fend for not only himself, but his

    younger sister as well.

Growing up as an orphan in his familys former home, now used as a

Soviet orphanage, he is haunted in his sleep by dreams of the war crimi-nals who savagely took his sisters life.

After maturing into adulthood, Hannibal seeks out revenge on those

    who stole his sanity.

Review: Gaspard Lilliel (Hannibal Lecter) played his role well as an

estranged psychopath. Being an actor overseas, it was not hard for him

to pull off the German accent.

Gong Li, star ofMemoirs of a Geisha, plays Lady Murasaki who is

    Hannibals widowed aunt.

She teaches him how to pray to her ancestors for courage and strength

and also how to swing around a sword.

Shockingly, she shows sympathy towards Hannibal even after wit-nessing his inhumane acts.

In my opinion,Hannibal Rising was a terrible movie and a waste of

    a good 2 hours.

You should denitely not waste any of your hard earned money to go

see it in theatres or rent it when it comes out.

If you are dying to see it, I recommend waiting until it starts showing

on HBO or any local channels.

I have not read the book myself, but I am sure Thomas Harris novel

is just as bad as his screenplay turned out to be.
