Volume 36 Number 7 August/September 2013

We all should be enjoying this sum-

mer since the weather has been very nice.

There was very little June gloom, which

has made it great to get out and enjoy the

activities, and I am sure that our new Ac-

tivities Director Lynette Collins will tell

us about them. Hopefully everyone has

had an opportunity to join some of the

fun events.

Since we are on a bi-monthly newslet-

ter schedule, I need to get everyone up to

speed on how we did at the Far West Ski

Association Convention in Reno. Starting

things off I want to congratulate our Past

President Barry Cole for the excellent

article that he wrote that won third place

in the Tollakson Outstanding Club

Award for Class AAA clubs. In addition,

we need to congratulate Debi Young our

newsletter editor for her outstanding

work in publishing our Newsletter,

because she came in third place in the for

the class AAA Wentworth Outstanding

Club Publication Award for an out-

standing newsletter. When you see them

please take the time to thank them for the

great job they are doing for our club. We

enjoy the jobs we perform for the club,

but it always feels good to hear that you

are happy with our work.

I was talking to Tom Bundgard, Vice

President for the San Diego Council of

WHAT’S INSIDE !! Ski Clubs (SDCSC) at our last club meeting.

He told me that the representative for the

Vail Ski Resort may be in town on Aug. 9th,

that is the day of our next outdoor meeting

at Scripps Ranch Community Park. If possi-

ble, we are going get them to attend the

meeting so that you can hear more about the

plans at Vail. I will find out at the next

SDCSC board meeting and will let you if

they are attending with a blast before the

meeting.

By now, I hope you are all starting to

make your plans for the upcoming ski and

boarding season. Edie Pike our Travel Di-

rector has put together an awesome trip to

Winter Park Colorado, and at a great price!

We are also working on the four trips to

Mammoth Mountain. We may be changing

things up this year by going to some differ-

ent condo’s. This will be our opportunity to

have some new adventures at Mammoth, by

enjoying new surroundings with different

amenities. Either way we will be on the hill

with friends, which is always a great time. I

will leave the details and the description of

the fun to our trip leaders and travel direc-

tor, because they always put together a great

time for all.

I hope that everyone has enjoyed the

summer so far and will have many great

stories to tell me the next time we meet. I

will leave the details of our future events to

our board members in this newsletter.

Until next time make the best out of

everything and have fun.

Many of our Snowdrifter members use our website

news. Don’t forget we also have our very own Facebook

page. Facebook is a great way to keep up with friends

and other members. You can

post messages and update the

club on activities and ideas.

many activities that members have hosted so far

and there are more to follow. Thank you to all our great

volunteers who have offered (or been convinced) to host a Join Us event.

I know there will be an article about our annual HatAss party. Just wanted to say it was a HUGE success and a lot

of fun! Thank you, the members, for coming to enjoy!

I want to thank, Peter Back for helping to make our Cruisin’ Grand event a big success. 9 Car Crazy people attending the Friday

night event in Escondido. After looking at many amazing & pretty cool cars we decided to head to La Tapaita and enjoy Margaritas &

I heard the Summer Pops concert put on by Eileen Sanford was a big success. Thanks to Eileen.

We have had 2 Happy Hours so far at The Coyote’s Bar & Grill in Carlsbad on July 10 & 18 both of which were a lot of fun. Thank

you Shannon Miller. There are many more bands performing through the summer & into the fall so let’s do it again. I’m sure Shan-

non would be glad to do it again.

A group of fun loving people attended the play “Suds” with dinner after at Coyote’s put on by Val Clem. It was an amazing eve-

ning and the play was hysterical. Up coming plays look really fun, too & I think we can get Val to do it again.

Unfortunately the Padres lost but I heard the Padre game put together by Carl Cobb was a great evening of ballpark fun & we

really need to do it again. Any interest?

Can you say BUNKO?? Thank you Hilda & Neal for hosting a really fun evening for 12 Bunko Players. The meal was yummy

HEALTH & SAFETY

Frank Arambarri

Hello

Snowdrifters

The Sun: One the reasons we all live in San Diego. We all love it, but it can also cause a serious problem:

Skin Cancer.

How to spot Skin Cancer is critical to all of us.

Your skin is your body's largest organ, and no matter where

you live (sunny or not), you should aim to reduce your risk of

skin cancer. Checking your body for warning signs is important

- studies show that people who regularly inspect their skin can

reduce their risk of melanoma by as much as 63 percent. During

your self-examination:

Note any changes in freckles or moles or any new

bumps or nodules.

Look for moles or freckles with irregular borders, mixed

colors (especially black), signs of inflammation (redness)

or pallor, and any increase in their size.

Pay attention to moles or freckles that are bigger than

the size of a pencil eraser, fail to heal after a minor in-

jury, or are scabby or scaly.

If you notice any of the above, schedule an appointment with

a dermatologist - he or she will determine if treatment is neces-

sary. In addition, you can help to prevent melanoma by protect-

ing yourself from the sun (especially important if you are plan-

ning a vacation somewhere sunny) with hats, sunscreen with an

SPF of at least 30, sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and

UVB rays, and UV-protective clothing

What are the causes?

Malignant transformation of melanocytes primarily occurs as a

result of DNA damage from ultraviolet (UV) light. This explains

the relationship between melanoma and the length of sun expo-

sure, and how the chances of developing it increase with age.

Melanoma is most common among people with fair skin, blue or

green eyes, and red or blond hair. Risk factors include a family

history of melanoma, the presence of many moles (nevi) or

birthmarks and development of precancerous lesions (dysplastic

nevi), as well as having obvious freckling on the upper back and

shoulders, three or more blistering sunburns prior to the age of

20, and experiencing high levels of intense sunlight. There seems

to be a direct correlation between the development of melanoma

and intense sun exposure as a child. In addition, tanning salons

expose the body to UV radiation and appear to pose an in-

creased risk of melanoma, as does the combined use of UVA

light with psoralen (PUVA) for the treatment of psoriasis.

“ San Diego Council Update”

Continued from Page 4 Annual Hat Asss Party Review:

The 2013 Annual Hat Asss Party was a fun time! Thanks

goes out to Barry and Nora Cole for opening their home to

the club for this annual event. A lot of work goes into this

event and they helped make it a total success!

This year we did things a little differently. In the past this

has been an evening event with lots of dancing and food.

This year we made the event a day time, activity filled event.

We had a wonderful catered lunch by Jalapeño Grill in

Escondido. They set up in the Cole’s back yard and cooked a

feast for us of Carnitas and Pollo Asada Tacos.

Thanks to Barry Cole for organizing a grand horseshoe

tournament. We had prizes for everyone that participated.

And speaking of prizes… we had a gift card raffle every half

hour. 30 gift card prizes in all and scratcher lottery tickets for

everyone that participated in the horseshoe tournament. And

of course there were special prizes for the winners of the Hat

contest. Winners this year:

Lynda Marika and Dale Voeltzel 1st place

Ken Zuorro, Jennifer and Eric VanPelt 2nd place

Chris Polta 3rd place

After the wonderful food,

horseshoes, and hat contest we

started the main event. When

guest arrived they were given a

“neck hanger” to wear. At 4:00

we asked everyone to open

their neck hanger and then re-

port to their group for the

“Dress the Snowman Relay”.

Each team was asked to dedicate one person to being the

snowman while the rest of the team ran a relay gathering

hats, crazy oversized sunglasses, and snow man attire. Hard

to even describe the fun it watch-

ing this mad race! The winning team!
