October/November 2011

FROM THE DISTRICT SUPT.

OCTOBER:  CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH For several years now, October has been nationally recognized by denominations, parachurch ministries, publishers, bookstores, and radio stations as Clergy Appreciation Month...as a time to specifically honor, affirm, and refresh the hearts of their pastor (and pastoral staff).  In addition to the tangible and creative ways you and your church can express your appreciation, may I suggest that you initiate or renew special prayer for your pastor in the following manner: Monday:  pray for your pastor's family...God's peace and protection...relationship with spouse...their children.Tuesday:  pray for wisdom for your pastor...the mind of Christ...Godly decision making...understanding of biblical truth.Wednesday:  pray for your pastor's ministry focus...clear vision...commitment to biblical priorities...steadfast to his/her God-given gifts/strengths.Thursday:  pray for your pastor's health...protection of his/her body and mind...an extra portion of stamina and strength...commitment to stress-releasing activity.Friday:  pray for your pastor's spiritual growth...a heart for God and the lost...fresh biblical insights...time with the Lord other than sermon preparation.Saturday:  pray for your pastor's purity...pure motives...pure thoughts and faithfulness...pure commitment to complete integrity.Sunday:  pray for God's anointing on your pastor...as he/she delivers the Word of God...as spiritual leader of the flock...and for fruit and joy in their ministry. This simple support, carried out by several laypersons, or a church board, could not only have a positive impact upon a pastor, but an entire church.  For as a pastor is strengthened and encouraged, so is a congregation of people. In addition to the above suggestions, we encourage every church on the North Florida District to express their appreciation and love by making it financially possible for their pastor/spouse to attend our

annual District Ministry Team Retreat, October 3-6, in Panama City Beach.   Thank you for loving your pastor(s).  And thanks for showing them how much you appreciate them this October. Orville Jenkins, Jr, SuperintendentNorth Florida District

We had an awesome kickoff event at Orange Park on August 28. There were teams from Deland, Leesburg, Jax Oak Hill, Jax First, Orange Park, St. Johns Faith Community Church, and Panama City, 33 Quizzers in all. Every team was ready for competition to begin and scoring was high throughout the day.  Several of the first year Quizzers scored right along with the experienced Quizzers making for an exciting competition.  At the end of the day, last years Dist. Champions from St. Johns Faith Community Church won by winning a three way tie breaker round between themselves, Deland and Orange Park. After Orange lead the entire Quiz, they came from behind on the 18th question, and held on to win.A perfect score for individual would have been 360 points for the day; we had a tie for first place at 350 points and several Quizzers scored above 300.  Agreat spirit of fellowship was had by everyone.

Here's a breakdown of the scores:Suwathi (Orange Park) & Chris (Oak Hill) tied at 350Calab (FCC) 340Sarah (DeLand) & Newman (Panama City)Panama City tied at 330Suren (Orange Park) 310Praveena (Orange Park) & Miray () tied at 300 Kelly (FCC) 250Jennifer (Deland) 200Jeremy (Orange Park) 170Adam (PanamaCity) 140Felicia (Orange Park) 130Brandi (Jax. First), Darah (DeLand), Rayna (DeLand), Lora (Leesburg) tied at 120Logan (Jax. Oak Hill), & Jeremy (FCC) tied at 50.

It was great to welcome back two of our old line Quiz programs from Jax First and Panama City.Since the last Quiz, I have heard from the Trenton Church that they will be coming to our next Quiz to be held at Live Oak on Sept. 25.

“Extreme Days”

On November 11-13 approx. 140 students and adults will descend upon the Jacksonville Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene for this TNT at TNU primer. “Synergy” is going to happen as we open with a concert from “LivingSong” on Friday evening and carry through the weekend with Pastor Jonathon Leonard from our Hernando Church.

“LivingSong” is a fresh face on the Worship Band scene. Seven members coming from the greater Daytona Beach area bring an eclectic style of music to life as they worship our risen Savior. You can learn more of them by checking them out at www.reverbnation.com/livingsong. All students and adults from across the district who would like to come and participate with our opening concert on Friday evening regardless of ED participation are welcomed.

Pastor Jonathon has been a frequent participant at “ED” and “TNT” for years. His heart is for students to connect deeply with the whole gospel of Jesus Christ that ministers to the whole person. We will conclude our time together with a joint worship service on Sunday, Nov. 13th with the Oak Hill Church family!

Registration forms are now available on our district website. Check it out and get your students involved this year. There is a growing excitement about what is happening across our district with Student Ministries!

October is "check up" month. Can you believe that we are halfway through another church year? Time is flying rapidly by. We have designated October as a month for us to make sure that we have done everything so far that will make us a "Summit" Award church and a Mission Priority One church. To that end, please use the check off

November is Thanksgiving Offering for World Evangelism.

The World Evangelism Fund (WEF) is the essential foundation for all giving in Global Mission. In churches around the world, pastors, church boards, and NMI leaders network prayerfully and strategically to fulfill WEF giving goals.   WEF provides baseline infrastructure: leadership for 7 regions, 36 fields, and 426 districts and national ministries. For missionary families, WEF provides

Page 5: Volume 38 number 5 october & november 2011

equipping, salary; housing, utilities, medical insurance, moving costs, and travels to and from the field. The World Evangelism Fund was created to allow all missionaries to work effectively and to encourage all churches to support outreach efficiently. No other church supports global mission more effectively than the Church of the Nazarene. No other funding plan invests more productively in life transformation than WEF giving. It is the most helpful way to invest in the Great

Commission and Book-of-Acts holiness mission movements. WEF is a key in global strategy to evangelize and disciple people with the love of Christ and the Gospel.  The global mission of the Church of the Nazarene is a massive venture. To accomplish the Great Commission—spreading Christ, the Gospel, and holiness around the world—requires money.   How WEF Works: Full-time missionaries (excluding volunteers) in the Church of the Nazarene receive monthly compensation based on a modest standard amount plus a cost-of-living adjustment according to the world area in which they serve. The World Evangelism Fund comes from the generosity of Nazarenes around the world. We challenge each church globally to contribute 5.5 percent of its current income. Many churches see the effectiveness of global mission and give well beyond that minimum.  A major portion of administrative and support costs are for infrastructure essential to global ministries. Costs to deliver ministries such as global technology, global communication, and global travel increase annually. Benefits of WEF: Missionaries receive regular compensation, enabling them to concentrate on their calling and to help raise awareness for the entire mission. While missionaries correspond and offer home assignment/deputation services to inform people of their field of service, these activities do not demand a large portion of their time on the mission field.  Each church, regardless of size, has an opportunity to participate in global mission. Just as God blesses individuals when they commit their resources for His kingdom, so churches are blessed when they give to help reach lost people around the world. If you would like some skits, brochures, or Power Point slides to use as promotional material, type in this link: http://www.nazarenemissions.org/10108/story.aspx

DID YOU EVER WANT TO QUIT THE RACE AND HANG ‘EM UP? If you haven’t, then you aren’t normal. Every normal person has periods when he or she is ready to throw in the towel. Several years ago I charted a course for my life. I chose what I believed to be the highest and truest way of living. I gave myself to it. And I have pursued it. But there have been times when I have wanted to call it quits and hang up my shoes. Quitting is tempting because it is easier. When you get knocked down time and again it is hard to get up and go another time. When it seems as though you are behind and can never catch up, it is awfully hard to keep trying. Life is tremendously demanding if a person pledges himself to the best he/she knows. It becomes so difficult sometimes that the temptation to give up is very strong. The benefits of giving up seem appealing and attractive. A person needs a solid foundation if they attempt to follow the highest and best they know. Because when the storms of doubt and despair blast against our structure, it will crumble like dust if there isn’t something solid underneath. I will not quit. I can’t because I know that nothing worthwhile can be accomplished by quitting. I will never accomplish all I would like to, but I will accomplish nothing if I give up. And back when I made my decision, I wasn’t promised peaches and cream. The One I follow was crucified. Why do I think following Him should be easy? No, I my vow to be faithful. And that is all He desires of me. Not to be successful. Not to be popular. One thing He desires of me –to be faithful! I can do that. I can be faithful. I can hang in there and give the best I have. I will be a better person by doing that. And stronger. And by doing so I can help another who is struggling to stay above water. QUIT? Sure, there are times I want to quit. How easy life would be if I would just drop out of the race. But I will not do that, no matter how great the temptation. He is depending on me to be faithful. And that one thing I can and will do. I will not disappoint Him. I will be faithful. Give me a drink of the Living Water. I’m ready to get back into the race! By D. Wildmon
